Thanks AsusS and Rob! That's great news. With regards to PM55 vs. HM55, I'm hoping it's a PM55, but only because folks here have flashed a 660 with the 660R BIOS and enabled RAID. AsusS, good point about the higher power requirements for the quad. It's nice to know you have the choice to upgrade if you want, though.

    No Problem.

If you do decide to go for the upgrade i would highly recommend the higher PSU adapter the Brick power supply i mean.

As for initial temps you should be fine.

The Wat is increased thus meaning higher heating values the processing units will increase along with your processing cores which will work a lot more faster than IE the I5 processor.

I can only wish you a great and excellent thumbs up on your upgrade to a higher Core if you do indeed perform it come back here for help im always around.

    I left you Reputation.

    Thanks.

    I'm considering moving from my Asus G73Jh to the GX660R-060US, (for the smaller form factor), and I was wondering if owners could comment on;

    1) SSD Compatibility - I have a Kingston SSDNow V+ Series SNVP325 (which I think is a Samsung controller), and I was hoping that it would be compatible.

    2) Heat and Noise while non-gaming

    3) Portability

    Thanks..

    1) Not sure on that. Works with OCZ vertex SSD, though.

    2) No noise whatsoever when not gaming (unless caining the cpu to 100%), same with heat.

    3) Fairly heavy unit and quite a thick deepness to it, although still perfectly laptoppy to me :)

Something's screwed up with that temperature sensor. Just use HWmonitor and leave it open while you use FurMark.

Also make sure it's stability test and xtreme burning mode.

(BTW. Thanks very much for your feedback on the heat/noise/portability aspects..)

I stand corrected on the Kingston SSDNow V+ SNVP325, SSD. They apparently utilize Toshiba's T6UG1XBG Solid State Drive controller, which replaces the older SNV225 series SSDs, with the Samsung controller. The reason I'm asking is that some folks have suggested that the only SSD that's compatible with the GX660R, is the Intel controller based ones. Since the OCZ Vertex SSD, which I believe is an Indilinx controller, works in the GX660R, that's proved inaccurate. If anyone else knows of other brands that work, please feel free to mention them.

Lastly, can an owner comment on the RAID features? I'm assuming that there is some kind of RAID controller built in, and I also assume that this is something that can be enabled or disabled. I wouldn't ever want to run any RAID configuration on the laptop, and I would just as soon disable it.

    Thanks..

Regarding RAID you can configure it at bootup how ever you like. I myself dont find any benefit from RAID so I have it disabled.

What Bearclaw said. I'd be careful with your GPU, since it could be burning up and you would have no idea.

I'm thinking of re-installing Windows 7 myself. I figure, after backing my data up, I run a clean installation and once installed I install all the drivers. I'd also like to set my Raid 0 striped hard drives to 1 partition instead of the 2 it came with by default. This can be done during the installation setup, correct?

Let me know if I'm missing something lol. Thanks! :D

For the free options, Microsoft Security Essentials, Avira, and Avast are very popular. The newest Norton is a very popular paid option. Malwarebytes Antimalware is a good backup option if the "regular" AVs can't bust an infection.

HWMonitor is a good general monitor. I haven't used HWInfo or Speedfan, but people recommend those, too. GPU-Z is good for GPU monitoring, and progams like MSI Afterburner has an on-screen display that lets you see your GPU temperatures in-game.

I don't have an active anti virus. I just scan with Malwarebytes once in a while. Anti viruses are too intrusive and don't want them affecting my games.

Microsoft Security Essentials is good enough, just combine it with a script blocker like NoScript for Firefox and you should be good to go.

    Hi guys,

Thanks to Forge, I was able to find a program that could detect all my temps, including the hard drives. So far, it seems my hard drive temps have been fine, but I'm a little concerned about the CPU and GPU temps. It's pretty cold in this room and I just turned my computer on after leaving it shut down for about 5 hours and these are the temps I'm getting while only running Firefox with a few tabs and HWiNFO32:

Hopefully I embedded the image correctly. If not, you can see it here: http://d.pr/z2R5

Thanks for having a peek :)

    Hi guys

I just got my GX660R-219UK... I have to say... WOW!!!! great piece of machine... really in love with this laptop... My only complain is the flexed keyboard but it didn't concern me much.

I just have a few question for you guys, i've been using lenovo in the past n they have an update software to let us know if there is any BIOS etc. updates. Is there also a software for MSI too? If not, what is the best wat to know if we have any updates?

    Thank you guys!

MSI Download Center. There's a live update option, although I've never tried it because Internet Explorer is mandatory. You can also just use the Manual Download drop down menus to the right of it or type "GX660" in the search field.

I would not worry about the temps its fine and you have 2 years warranty.

+ It has a cooling mode as far as i know.

ATI products get hot my desktop ati 5870 reaches around the same temps and at load can go upto 80-82C among that playing games like BC2 and Napoleon.
