Hey, pal! Long time no see. Happy to know you are now bossing... hehehe, but not surprised at all.
Yes, I'm still using GX660R, typing on it right now, btw. I've built two desktops since 2010, both very strong, but had to sell the first one to cover costs of house move from Recife to São Paulo; the last one I gave in exchange for a complex carpenter job in my studio. But my old friend MSI has never been neglected; I can't remember a single day I didn't turn it on since first boot.
Now I'm broken, can't spend a penny on a new rig, so I have to rely on this old bad boy to work and play a little.
Greetings from a convulsed, mad, ridiculously pathetic, all broken Brazil.
    Cya!

Mine have 940xm, ram and ssd upgrades. And maybe will get some 970m/980m to fill it's lungs with oxygen. :) in a couple months. Shall see.
    Regards to all :)

    Please notice:
after a long time I can reasonably argue that the most important change that solved the random freezes with GX660 and 7970M 2GB + i7-840QM was setting*:
    • Advanced > PCI Latency Timer > 96 PCI Bus Clocks
    • Advanced > Max Non-Turbo Ratio > 15
    *
To enter advanced stock BIOS settings on reboot press RCTRL+LSHIFT+LALT + INS (on the keypad)

@Velho - and you knowcthat it can be upgraded to all kepler cards (in mine gx740 k5000m quadro, but it's the same in your) , and I have it from very recently, but it's the one of the best msi laptops, apart from cooling (yea I have done some light mods to it but still I must correct it). But once I will do it, I think i will use it a long time still

I believe someone might have already upgraded to a 970m. This might be the last balanced upgrade before seeing the CPU side lag too much compared to the GPUs.

You should use Samsung SSD for best compatibility on such old platform, also the performance will be capped at 300MB/s no matter how fast the SSD is because of hardware limitation.

I just sold mine and wanted to clarify something. I had Win7 pre-installed on it and I decided to wipe it all before selling. I did a clean install of Win 10 and it worked fine, it eradicated all of my previous data.

Is there anyway the new owner could find a way to retrieve any of the old data?

Yes, perhaps some data but majority of them are probably damaged. But even damaged data can still show some information if the new owner is tech-savvy and curious.
If this is a concern, then you should perform disk wipe based on DoD standards before reinstalling the OS.

Kevin, I sold it to a kid. I don't think he's tech savvy, but then again some kids these days are quite extraordinary when it comes tech stuff.

Anyway, I deleted all partitions and it seemed like nothing survived. So I take it on basic level he wouldn't be able to access any of the data like chrome stuff and bookmarks. It would take some tinkering to unlock so to speak all of my the data? In other words given he'll be using it himself, I shouldn't worry about it.

    Hallo all,
I want to install an Samsung EVO 850 SSD in to my MSI GX660. It is currently with the original 500 GB HDD .
Currently as well with the Original Bios by MSI.

I was trying to find some active links for the Modified BIOS from this topic , but everything is down. Found only a link to some BIOS with "unlocked" options. Will it work with it, or I need the one being shared around here - if yes, can I ask somebody to upload it for me.

Thank you in advance fellow MSI GX660 owners. Lets bring some life in to my veteran soldier..

This is a very old product, if you need a special BIOS based on the latest version it's best to check with Svet directly. He will be able to unlock one for you.

Is he also to be found in this forum, or only on the MSI users forum. I have met some topics from him..

In general I do not need some special BIOS, i I need the one modded by Majster some years ago, solving the issues with SSD's compatibility under AHCI.

Is there such a thing as a cheap GPU upgrade for this? Trying to upgrade on a budget (840QM etc.)

According to MXM-upgrade, GX660 works nicely with the HD6970 and HD7970. Fans in non-auto mode, no HDMI. Use Dell order option.

I know, it's an old thread but please help me.
I am having compatibility problems with my crucial mx100 256gb ssd and my GX660r.

Can anyone kindly post here an up to date link with the unlocked bios?

    Thanks

I managed to find it and flash it. Everything went smooth.

Just a couple of things: I am trying to enable xmp profile but can't find the memory ram tab in the bios???

I am as well trying to do a clean install of windows 10 and Linux Debian but strangely even on legacy my kingstone 8gb usb and another generic 4gb usb drive don't get recognized?

Can you help? Is there any hidden bios in this machine that I can access, maybe?

    Thanks

As far as I remember, there was no support for XMP with GT660/GX660 so the options are limited. The unlocked options may not be able to give you what you needed.
Regarding the OS, have you tried Windows 7 and see if it works? Just to verify.

USB drive doesn't get recognised in bios, so OS is not the problem.

I want to boot and do a clean install from usb bootable drive.

Hah there you go. I knew it I had to do something like that in order to access a hidden bios.
I am gonna try it tomorrow and let you know. What about the bootable usb drive?
Do you know why the bios doesn't recognise it in the booting options?

How am I going to install windows 10 on a drive smaller than 4Gb? It's not virtually possible at least with the encoding techniques we have today.

Sorry, I was saying is to troubleshoot using USB media with Win7 on it, if it works then we know it's not the flash drive. Or if you can test the flash drive on other PC if you are able to. Also, how did you create the bootable USB flash drive?

I think I just bricked it by trying to enable switchable graphics in the bios.
Screen just stays black. I removed the cmos battery for the whole night but nothing happens. I am trying to access the recovery but nothing happens.

Do you know what to do? How much will msi charge for a bricked motherboard repair?

O boy why did you do that? That laptop doesn't have switchable graphics.. Did you really think that you somehow discovered a way to enable it that was never talked about on these forums in all the years? If I remember correctly guys that tried that bricked their laptops and with as old as your GX600R is now, getting MSI to provide support might be a challenge. You might be able to get someone on here to provide a hardware BIOS flash to attempt repair, but that would also require them to have the original BIOS files. This will probably end up being a expensive lesson that might not even be worth the cost as the laptop is old.

I thought you simply wanted to set your RAM speeds to correct XMP speed?

I read that some people were able to recover their BIOS by clearing the CMOS by removing the battery multiple times. One guy in particular it took 4x attempts and removed for 5 minutes each time.

I did it because the I5 460m that this laptop has, do have integrated graphics.
I wanted to enable switchable graphics in order to save battery life while I am away from home and need just to surf the web. I do trip a lot.

I am trying to run ami bios recovery and force the system to flash from usb but I don't have a led status on the usb drives and don't know if they are actually being used since the screen is black.

Do you think I should order a new bios? I found one from the US 14 pounds , then I can solder it.

P.S. Didn't pay anything for the laptop, it was given to me by my cousin who found it in a house he bought. He is not really into this stuff, still using paper notebook ahahaha.

How did you even enable switchable graphics in the first place?

Disassemble the laptop and remove the CMOS battery. It should have one on the underside of the mainboard. Remove it, wait 5 minutes, then reassemble.
You can also sometimes remove the RAM sticks and try to post with one RAM stick. Or even try to remove ALL the RAM sticks then try to boot. Then put in one RAM stick and try to boot with just 1 afterwards. Usually this will force a CMOS clear.

I did specify that I have already tried everything some posts ago. I have tried those thing not just once but many many times.
Hopefully bios reprogramming will work since it's pretty cheap nowadays to buy a usb bios programmer.

You can enable switchable graphics in the northbridge configuration tab.
    It gives you 5/6 options

    Auto
    Igd
    Peg
    Switchable
    and other 1/2 options I can't remember.

Edit: fixed with a a bios chip programmer!

I just removed the Centrino N 1000 and going to upgrade to AC wireless. Can anyone tell me where the bluetooth chip is?

I wanna remove it since the new wifi half mini has 4.1 integrated bluetooth.
