    Hi guys,

I've jus updated my GX660-607 (i5 460M + hd5870) to windows 10. Everythings is fine, except brigthness control of the screen that doesn't work. Do you have any idea.

Fn key is working with light control. The animation of "system control manager " works fine, but the brightness still the same. I have also the problem even if I use the windows brigthness control.

Hoping someone can give me some advice on this board.
Long story short I brought my gx660r in for repair - bios had kept resetting even after changing batteries multiple times and after tracing the board myself, then finally giving up.

Keep in mind I went for cheap for a local shop as this isn't my primary laptop, but I do have a lot of money in it - i7 940xm, multiple different gpu's I've used for test purposes.

So I receive the laptop back, they've removed the entire cmos battery holder - soldering the battery wires to negative and one of the chips below. I've removed that as it just drained the battery, and can see on the board what they've done.

The laptop still runs like a champ but I would like to know if anyone has any diy tips at this point. I'm not sure which chip to solder to for the positive or if that's even an option anymore. Please help. :)

Did you just try using the same points as the holder? Maybe it was the clip not contacting properly in the first place.

Actually attempted to repair the traces unsuccessfully that were damaged when the + side came off.

I've also attempted to attach to the bottom where the point is. This seems to work briefly but within 5 minutes of the notebook being off the batteries (using 2 in parallel to extend time) drain. They'll come back to life if I remove them from that point for a minute, so I suspect I still need to repair at least one of the traces.

Hurts my head. Lol lesson learned - remove the cpu heatsink before trying to get that battery out.

    Hello hexaae,

I am also having the same problem with my 7970M, I had flashed my GPU couple of days back and yesterday suddenly the screen went blank and after that my 7970M GPU is not getting detected :(. I have the vbios backed up.

I see that you have somehow corrected this issue by Undervolting and changing the Power Limit. Could you please provide me your vbios which you used to correct this issue? It would be really helpful :). Thanks in advance.

Not sure it's solved unfortunately... :(
Have had the same "blackout" again randomly... Maybe it's just a bad thermal tape / or I should re-paste the GPU...

Thank you so much man for getting back to me :). I have currently removed my GPU completely for now becoz I was not able to login to Ubuntu. Whereas in Windows, if I have not installed the AMD driver it logs in to Windows with horrible 8-bit color output and 640x480 resolution and it can't be changed at all :(. If I install the AMD drivers the booting gets stuck at Windows logo. Was it the same for you as well?

Yesterday I tried blind flashing and everything possible but it didn't work. Today I am planning to try my one last solution I found in this link at the bottom
    http://forum.techinferno.com/general-notebook-discussions/1736-amd-7970m-modified-vbios-67.html

Have you tried this above solution?

    Thanks once again.

    No never.

Once I bricked my 7970 because of stupid 3rd pary flash tool who didn't even ask me confirmation before flashing the vbios... It costed me 50€ to un-brick it to a specialized electronic repairs center here in Italy...

    Hey guys,

its been years since my last post and its really amazing to find out that GX660 can still take GTX 970m. I mean, that is a seriously awesome lifespan extending for this laptop. Respect for m11kkg for taking the leap of faith ^^. Not to forget that heatsink with extra pipes. I think thats a good investment on all GX660 whether or not you upgrade the GPU.

Quick question tho, the tdp on GTX970m is lower than 7970m, any chance it, along with 920xm, can get by with the regular power brick adapter? Or a more powerful one still needed?

    Thanks.

nope, i did not oc the 920xm, and yes my psu is the original standard delta 150w that comes with the laptop first time i bought it.

btw, i also read that it doesnt matter that enduro is off or on for 7970m as long as you change efi compatible to legacy in unlocked bios (also as long as the vbios is 1.2), anybody can confirm this?

    thanks

If you don't OC that XM then 150W will be enough for any card but nonOC XM 1gen is rather too slow for any new card (not in all games of course but around 2,12GHz compared to 3,0 is a big difference in speed)

if you buy 7970m with enduro bios (from clevo EM series) then you simply blindflash to nonenduro bios, in all cases best way is set bios to legacy rom of course (and best way is to modify it with amibcp and flash it with always legacy rom even if you clear cmos to reset settings bios)

Heatsink don't really need to be 3heatpipes - 2pipes will be enough , naturally need to be modified for new card (in almost every case )

    But
if you really want upgrade that MSI - buy MSI 16f3 motherboard (msi gt60), also need both hdd board and of course 3gen cpu (or 2gen but really really buy 3gen)-
MB is aroung 150 USD (check aliexpress but you can ask MSI service )
hdd board - check MSI service because aliexpress in this case is way to expensive

And that's the cheapest way to get 3gen cpu with optimus (but you cannot use AMD card - because of 100% fan ) and you can use any NV card

Hi everyone, my 5870m seems to be dying and im wondering if its worth to buy new gpu for GX660. I have i7-920xm with 19 multiplier hitting temps around 80C (playing gw2), so im looking for the best option to the 920xm. I have no idea how big of a difference is 920xm vs the 3rd gen cpus in gaming but upgrading mobo, cpu and gpu seems to not be worth at all.

Yeah, i thought so too on not OC ing the 920xm. So far, I haven't found the need for it (and it builds up more heat) so I never actually OC my CPU. But, I guess now that the heatsink for GTX 970m is actually available and compatible; I'm thinking of pairing the 7970m with that heatsink and OC my CPU while making tons of holes on the back cover.

The bad news is; I just realized that the power adapter that comes with the original is the 120w version T-T. Guess i have to shop for adapter as well.

Thanks for the confirmation on 7970m. Does anybody here still have UltraGSM unlocked bios? Almost every link I found in this thread seems to be expired already.

I prefer to push this MOBO to the max instead of switching to 16F3. I kinda feel proud to have an old machine that can still compete with newer gaming laptop, despite the slow CPU and the laptop weight ^^

The other thing I wanna try is the backlit keyboard mod that I saw somewhere in this forum, then my work is complete ^^.

    Thanks

Just be aware that each heatsink has different posts depending on the layout of the card they are meant for so are not generally interchangable.

Ah yes, I just compare the original 5870m heatsink and the GTX 970m heatsink and it does have different posts >.< Thanks for the reminder, I totally forgotten about it.

If we ignore the price differences and the fact that GTX 970m is so hard to find; it is a lot easier switching to GTX 970m instead of 7970m, right? Just plug and play and just 1 grinding job of the heatsink. But, is it worth it tho? Won't even the OCed CPU still be a bottleneck?

    Thanks

The 970M will perform just fine in most modern games with a quad core, even a slightly older one.

Ok, thanks for the info. Then it all comes down to price and installing simplicity between 7970m and GTX 970m.

Pretty much yeah, I would go with the 970M myself but if it's too much for you the 7970M is not a bad card.

Yeah, switching to 970m actually has alotta pros; no need blind flash, plug and play (only need modified driver, right?), less heat, heatsink actually helps lower cpu temps as well.

The only cons are availability and price, which is, including heatsink, about twice than 7970m.

Any place you can suggest on getting the 970m? I still found one last week on Ebay, but now its all out.

    Thanks.

    Hi guys,

I just flash unlocked bios and now trying to install SSD. The one I bought is Corsair Force series. I enable AHCI, disable all RAID, Hot Plug, PortMultiplier and FastBoot.

The weird thing is; It worked totally fine if I shutdown the machine and turn it back on. But, once I restart the machine from windows; it will not detect the SSD and I have to unplug and replug the SSD for it to detect it again. It happens no matter which port I used.

I know that Corsair SSDs been problematic with GX660, but has anybody ever experienced this?

    Thanks

This model had more issues with Sandforce-based controllers but Samsung drives had lesser issues.

Yes, I enable all slumber mode, and the problem still persist. So I ended up buying a new Samsung SSD 850 EVO and clone my system there instead of the Corsair Force LX , and I'm happy to report that it worked like a charm ^^ Done all the testing and I couldn't find any problem whatsoever.

    Thanks guys.

Hi guys, I know my msi gx660-651nl is now considered an elderly, or even dead considering the following problem, but any help is still appreciated.

I started having some white flashes one time at bootup, and for one day some weeks ago I had a constant white flashing screen unless I turned on the fan for 100% with the touch-button.
It seemed my laptop suddenly had a max GPU temp of 42/43 celsius or so before showing flashes, not sure about the exact numbers, but turning the fan on 100% would restore my image.
Things I did that day to try to fix it include: re-seating the videocard (normal temperatues afterwards, still the same temperature limit), removed video drivers using DDU and reinstalled driver.
    It did not help.

The next day all was fine like nothing ever happened (including normal game performance) and continued to be so for 2 weeks.
Now the white screen is the default experience, although sometimes turning on the fan will reveal windows trying for repairs (probably due to many restarts I tried).
I believe the video card is probably truly defect now, unless someone knows a fix.

Whenever I boot up after a longer downtime I do see the MSI boot screen where you can enter setup.
Any reboot shortly after this results in instant white screen.
I know with a functioning video card it would probably boot fully, but this may show whats wrong with the card.
I should also mention that a year ago I had the DC power jacket replaced after my laptop fell of a small hight, I might have had some slightly higher motherboard temperatures since (around 40 celsius)

I can probably boot up if i remove the video card and all my files are in the cloud.

On a more positive, though costly, note.
Im considering the GP60 2QF-1094NL as a replacement.
The GX660 cost me 900 euros back in april 2011 and the GP60 is 1100 euros.
The GP60 has got i7-4720HQ and GTX 950M.
I have seen laptops from other brands with a slightly newer CPU and the GTX960M, but they have 5400 rpm hard drives.
What do you say? I will miss the excellent sound of the GX660, but can always connect headphones or my HK soundsticks.

Where are you buying from? if possible, getting a GE62 might be a better idea with 5th or 6th gen CPU and 960m, but 4720 with 960m is still a good combo, far far stronger than the original GX660.

Maybe you can get an older GT60 if it's cheap enough too :) I woudn't sweat the 5400rpm drives as you can easily change those with an SSD in the future.

How did you solve USB issues after upgrading to Windows 10?
    Everytime after reboot I see
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B34&SUBSYS_10651462&REV_06\3&11583659&0&E8
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B3C&SUBSYS_10651462&REV_06\3&11583659&0&D0
are not initialized (yellow triangle in Device Management). Disabling and reenabling them right after, and they get immediately recognized (!??)

    EDIT:
Fixed. Uninstalled once again ALL USB devices and Intel IDE/ATA (forced internal MS driver), rebooted and finally working: Windows update installed all missing devices from scratch at once using Windows default internal drivers, and this seems to have fixed it finally:

Hello, I am owner of MSI GX660 notebook. Now I have bought AMD R7 SSD and my BIOS can't see him. I have looking over internet for solution, and found that majster msi has BIOS that can (I hope) handle all SSD. Anyway all download links are dead. Can someone please upload this moded BIOS somewhere to internet?
    Here is home page: http://www.amd.com/en-us/products/solid-state-drives#

    Thanks for any help.

    Hi All,

Happy New Year and all the best for 2016!!!!

I hope somebody would read my desperate message... I am looking for a custom bios for my MSI GX660 in order to activate AHCI and install an SSD drive. This custom bios is solving SSD drive detection issues. Source files were posted couple of months ago but the links are now dead since a while :(.... Thank in advance for your help.

I've had the same issue (I'm using latest Crimson AMD drivers 16.1 hotfix), fixed this way:

    Open regedit and find:

    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000"

search for "KMD_EnableBrightnessInterface2" and set its value to 0 (default is 1)
    and reboot.

Now brightness control should work as usual.

Does anyone know if GX660R support m.2? I'd like to install a 1TB SSd rive (SATA or NVME), but not sure if it'll work.

It does not support M.2, because you can only install 2.5" SATA SSD.

Someone knows a good touchpad driver for GX660 to enable multi-touch? I'd like to use two-fingers scrolling and the like..

Have you tried a different driver posted on station-drivers.com? Sometimes it's the driver itself and sometimes it's the HW limitation.

Hello debianik, I see in your signature 2 unlocked bios links. My question is: Is unlocked for SSD for GX660, and are working?

After a long time, I'm back just to say the BRAVE, AWESOME, AND BY FAR THE BEST PIECE OF HARDWARE I'VE EVER HAD, my unbeatable GX660R-060 US has completed 5 years and 2 months of hard work, and never, never had a single issue, no BSOD, no crashes whatsoever. It is completely stock, and yes, it's still gamming on a daily basis. Just 2 repastes since I fired it up for the first time, and temps are still amazing.
If you are still around, my friend Ryzek, I wish to thank you one more time for giving me such a perfect advice, which led me to buy this gem.
I don't know if MSI is still manufacturing the best laptops in the world, when it comes to performance and durability, but this GX660R is absolutely perfect .
    Have a good one!

And you were talking about @ryzeki, right? If yes, then he's still around.

    Hello Velho,

Indeed i'm still around :) and I have been upgraded to moderator ;) I am glad you are happy with your purchase, and I agree that the GX660R has been by far the most positive experience I have had with a laptop all in all. I don't have mine anymore, I sold it to a friend, but it's still alive and kicking indeed :)

I am currently using an MSI GT80 titan, first gen, and I am almost as happy as with my GX660R, mainly because unlike the GX660R, this one has given me some trouble here and there with nvidia heh :p

Hope to see you around still :)
