Ok, so hope ya's all had great XMAS and are looking toward having a great great new 2014 year just a days away now :)

Its been a while since I have started my little DIY project on the Backlit Keyboard mod to fit my MSI GT683R and just lately I have had it completed. So if you's are thinking of getting a backlit keyboard to your MSI laptop that came without a backlit keyboard feature, look in to this thread:
DIY Blue Backlit Steel-Series Keyboard MOD for MSI GT683R (May also work for MSI GX660 GT660 and similar models)

Hope yous will like it and appreciate it :)

    Thanks

    Need help!

Bricked my Dell 7970m (stalled black screen boot won't progress through BIOS) because of the f****g stupid ATIWinFlash tool where I accidentally tapped with the other hand on the mouse-pad and the program suddenly (!) started flashing the loaded (I was just curious to see voltages etc.) VBIOS without a damn warning/confirm request!! When the nightmare comes true...

So, now... who can help me to blind re-flash the card (I have the vbios backup)? I'll pay of course for disturb...
Plase, PM me, it's a pain to go back to 5870m! :(

Yes, BIOS and EC are exact the same for all GX660, except configuration such as HDD/RAM.

Whooo Gtx 570m 3gb gddr5 works 100% , just flashed bios to see how far it can overlclock

so far 750 core and 900 memory runs nice on bf4

seems i need to flash the non turbo clocks for bf4 to run on those clocks and turbo clocks for any other game, so i just flashed both clocks :p

It was a joke. MSI uses the GX moniker for AMD GPUs, and the GT moniker for Nvidia GPU's.

    Just for the records...
Guys, this GX660R-060 US of mine is a hard to crack nut, I must say. The toughest piece of hardware I've ever had. On 02/03 it's gonna celebrate its 3rd anniversary. And there it goes, gaming like crazy, 12 hours/day on, 7 days a week and never, never had a blink of an issue. It's still fast (obviously not a rocket for today's standarts, it's an old machine), and its turbo fan plus AS5 (I replaced thermal grease only a few months ago) keep it at 60C GPU and 54C CPU tops no matter what. And I live in Recife, a city so hot I call it "Hellcife".
My best shot ever. Gonna mourn it a lot the day it's gone. :)

and that's why i don't get that stupid "survey" they did where they asked people what the most "reliable" laptop brands are, and apple gets 19% (at the top) and MSI gets 1% (at the bottom).

MSI is like the greatest secret in mobile computing, and I'm thrilled to be "on the inside" of that little secret.

I have settled for 775/875 , memory not 100% stable at 900 mhz and core also not stable at 800.

Next upgrade is the screen :

Will the 15.6 full hd screen fit in the bezel? i heard the 768p screen is a 16 inch
Do i need to new cable going to the screen also or is current cable full hd capable?

glad to hear that my quadro that runs 730mhz on core isnt really so bad compare to your 570m :)

yes fhd screen fit into that msi - auo b156hw01 v4 matte or v7 glossy
    rest you can find https://hackpad.com/Best-Panels-Wiki-D5UvkrtVvJ9

if you have 768p then you need new lvds cable for fullhd screen

    edit
    @hexaae
maybe you buy some cheap flasher from china on usb ?
i used that things (around 20-30 dollars) to flash 5870m

Ok, so i'm just looking for a friend that wan't to upgrade his GT660R, what are the possibile hassle-free GPU upgrades since his 285M is getting kinda old.
The 680M or 7970M are a bit out of his budget tho, but i'd like to hear any other options that are well known working with the GT660R.

    Thanks

765m being reported as working so may be well worth the shot ;) but on another hand if you like AMD you could go 6990m, but still 7970m I believe can be picked up for the price of 765M

    Thanks for that info :)

I do like AMD (All my Laptops and PC's are running AMD Graphics) but the 6970 is almost the same price as 765M but it has lower performance.
Not really i was offered a 765M for 190€ here locally, where the 7970M would be at minimum 350€. Is there any problem with the Clevo version as far as i know it should work right, just different vBios and that's it.
Also a friend of mine has a 560M (also clevo) that he could borrow me to see if it works, is it worth a try? (It should be twice as fast, but i really don't have the time currently to be dissasembling and reasembling the laptop twice)

I'm not as active on forums as i'd like to be too :/

most likely you will need to flash another vbios if it wont post, but I feel it should work just fine. for going more in to detail I cant tell you much more, but like every gpu mod rules are - you got to try to find out

GPUz shows no OpenCL support in my 7970m + Catalyst 13.12. Is this normal? Can be corrected?

Another question: is VBE7.0.0.7b safe for editing 7970m's vbios?

    EDIT:
Tested and working! Undervolted my Dell 7970m [VBIOS 015.017.000.001.042717 (113-C42904A1-117)] from 1.050 to 1.000V thanks to VBE7! :)
Still puzzled why GPU-z reports no OpenCL support (other tools like GPU-Shark reports it correctly though...)
Notice the undervolting + Power Limit change from 56-84W to 56-90W seem to have solved also the random black screen freezes with sound in loop I've experienced in the past with my 7970m!

Guys, has anyone ever tried 24gb ram on the gx660r? I want to know if there's any precedent before buying the memory from newegg
I would also need if someone could provide me an unlocked bios, the factory bios options are pitiful

    Thanks in advance :)

Yes although I believe only 4GB dimms existed at the time so 8GB would not have been tested. Usually it works but I would check first.

Yes, working fine (except missing Mantle in the mobility version).
Currently I re-edited my Dell 7970m [VBIOS 015.017.000.001.042717 (113-C42904A1-117)] with VBE7.0.0.7b from stock 850/[email protected] to 900/[email protected] + Power Limit: from 56-84W to 56-94W and still working fine with lower temps (max temp <83°C on February, Italy, room 23.6°C, without Turbofan!) and no more random black screen freeze + loop sound issues as I got with the stock VBIOS!

Hi guys. I'm looking for a 180w power supply. I think my 7970m is a little more demanding than I thought. Think my current psu is playing up. Nothing major, but I dont wont to leave it till it's dead. I haven't got my 920 yet, lack of funds, but I thought I might as well get the PSU now.

I wanted to know if this one was ok to get?
Wholesale Genuine LITEON 180W Adapter Charger for APA05US PA-1181-08 | eBay

5.5x2.5 is the tip I need right? Even though you get all three.

    Reading the thread, I know this one might work as well;

    180W 19V 9.5A AC Adapter Charger for MSI GT683 GE60 GX60 Notebook Power Supply | eBay

So will either of those be ok?

Thanks to anyone that can help.

The tip is 5.5 x 2.5mm, and 180W is fine.
The tip is also known to be compatible with Toshiba NBs.

Does it work with the unmodified 460M/560M heatsink?
