yep , hot exotic stuff most times cost more than new stuff, so like cars new toyota avensis second hand few year old may cost 5000eur , and 1970 toyota GT may cost 15000eur :) because its old school :)

and believe me 940xm and 3610qm is minimal performance difference, I have had 940XM before and when got my first M18X R2 it came with 3610qm and I was not surprised at all with the performance of 3610qm vs my OLD 940XM ... thats why I respect old XM more than ivy bridge baseline :)

@ Rafi your personal inbox is full so I cannot pm you about the cpu mate.

Well just installed the new ram. And yes they are limited to 558mhz but are STILL faster than my old crucial as the timmings are smaller. Is it worth keeping though, in reality no difference, and windows exp actually marks them lower. 6.9 old 6.7 new.

you really need to go to your bios and set RAM memory speed from 1066 to AUTO so it will at least run 1333MHz, or even max supported by RAM 1866 should show ~933 MHz per channel, try that and let me know if it runs 1333MHz only or more.

If it runs just 1333Mhz, return it and get yourself 12GB CL9 RAM @ 1333MHz which will bring your RAM score t o7.4 and will run best with 12GB max ;)

wow, this is now cheaper than I thought! you need just 3 of those and youre FLYING with your GX660R

    Brand New Kingston 4GB DDR3 RAM 1333MHz PC3-10660 204 SODIMM 4 GB Laptop Memory 0740617166453 | eBay

very very very good price! Worth every penny!

I had 3x4GB total 12Gb of this exact RAM and it performed perfect for me, hence I recommend it :)

compare your crucial ram timings @ speed vs this 9-9-9-9-24 1333MHz is it even lower timing on your crucial ram sticks with this same speed?

Actual real life ... gaming performance is much smoother. so wont be sending these back! @ Ultra, do i need an unlocked bios to do that tweak?

Also i was having blue screens and going from 120fps in wow to 7 for no reason after a few hours of gaming. Turned out to be the psu AGAIN! they get so hot. Ultra can you link that good one you linked last time for me again please i cant find it.

Edit, I found it, but they dont ship to UK, Trying to negotiate. If not i need a psu quick as the stock psu is fine with the 7970m but new processor incomming very soon!!!! Help!

Yeah trying to negotiate a UK shipping.

For all the other upgraders out there, the stock, ie the PSU that comes with the laptop is fine with stock i5 460m and 7970m. I am overlcoking mine to 925 core and mem 1260 and its fine. The 180watt psu i bought is faulty and BSOD after 2 hours plus for over heating.

Dam cant find a PSU anywhere and the one from the states wont ship to the UK for any amount of money no matter what I offer. HELP!

Why don't you get a 180W PSU from the MSI GT70 series?

    How do I do that?

    OK GUYS getting anoyed now.
SO.. its not the PSU causing the BSOD It only comes on after a good few hours of gaming like 5 + Im guesiing its somthing overheating but both gpuz and cpuz CLAIM they are cool. When i say cool i mean under 60 degress gpu under 50 cpu. I thing gpuz is fausly stating the gpu temp and thats whats causing the BSOD cos the gpu is overheating. It makes sense. 1st its 120fps then 7fps ( when the gpu goes into shut down ) then BSOD when you carry on playing.

I think GPUZ is incorrect in statin gthe temp and the gpu is overheating. Anyone got any other ideas?

Also when run with the back off the gpu pipes are VERY HOT like very hot.

Hmmm, it can also be a power distribution issue, maybe it is not correctly distributing power to both CPU and GPU. If you have 9XXxm CPU, you can enter BIOS and limit TDP to 55w, as they tend to run at 65w for the QS versions.

Temps could also be reported incorrectly, so further monitor of temps should be made, even using pirometers.

As for the PSU, you can buy spare parts from MSI, you can also ask resellers here for such parts.

Cheers mate. Will contact msi about a psu. In regards to my post. How can it be a power issue? I have a i5 460m and even so if it was power draw it would be evident from the start of boot not 5+ hours in. Its definitely a heat issue. I have never been happy with thus 3 pipe heatsink j bought. And looking closely at it,its seems bent and not as straight as my 2 pipe version. I took it off and will dremel my 2 pipe tomorrow and attach that. In the meantime i need a psu and a New cpu. I think i should go back to desktops. Not got the skills for laptops.

Are you using the 7W/mK pads? Because I have stuck to the 5W/mK due to the fact they stay put and the MSI heatsinks have a lot of lateral movement when you put them on.

phobya thermalpads I found least useful, and setting up heatsink precisely requires extra attention, I have explained how earlier

Ok so here is the sneak peak of the day from me

Few more days and I will start working on Nvidia 560m heatsink shave-off mod for 7970m card, and cards installation, and will see forward installing steelseries backlit keyboard in to my GT683R with backlit working and programmable
Also there you see just total of 32 pieces copper heatsinks yet I have 16 more from last time, all should be connected as one in grid and be soldered on to copper pipes of the CPU and GPU heatsinks for maximum temperature control

Was there a workaround? Either way. ? The 830's are dirt cheap on scan at the moment. 138 gbp for 256 gb

If you consider drinking alcohol, walking to the shop by your foot, driving car dangerous, then flashing bios is also dangerous :D
I say its simple as it gets, flash right way right version and enjoy :D dont be so paranoid, in worst case scenario you will always be able to purchase new bips chip and get it re-soldered to your motherboard if something terribly wrong happens during the process. I have personally flashed my GX660R with my own versions over 5 times and nothing bad ever happened, so the same with nw GT683R flashed 2 times already with own different versions and nothing bad happened... I know some people here flashed my bios and complained it killed their notebooks, I totally keep in my understanding the idea of not knowing what these fellas were doing, simple as that. Or very little possibility they had bad flash luck or something. Most important is to not to hurry and take your time

I think here is , just keep scrolling pages backwards and keep on reading my posts or just use searchbox option and use keyword BIOS if I emember correct it was within the last month nonR GX660 bios uploaed on rapidshare

guide - refer to MSI bos flashing manual

you need FAT32 formated bootable USB Stick
extract MSI BIOS update package fles direct to directory of USB drive after you make USB drive bootable under DOS, and take my flash file and rename it to one exactly like its given in BAT command file and place it to the USB drive directory overwriting existing origial BIOS file in there, then reboot your laptop with stick in the laptop, and when it boots to DOS prompt just run BAT file by its filename and wait untill it finishes and then wait another ~1 minute and power off the laptop repower and enter setup and set your clock and ate and parameters desired

Oh I strongly suggest prepare yourself for worst case scenario, backup your desktop and documents etc music video text files and favoites / bookmarks and passwords of firefox opera etc etc in case it craps up you have access to most important stuff

Or send the drive back and swap it for a crucial M4.

Your instructions are flawless. But as the president of noobville i dont trust myself with such delicate matters.

Fyi on my 1st pc build i couldnt get it to boot. After 2 hours of trying i took the ram out to find there was pringle crumbs in it. Blew them out booted 1st time.

So the samsung will be limited anyway due to the sata2 port? If so... Whats the fastest sata 2 ssd for this board?

Hell it may just plug and play. Who knows. Will report back tomorrow.

:D maybe hard to find maybe not but price will not be half lower because its SATA2, samsung PM800 is very good SSD and its SATA2 as far as I remember, but still are costy. The good point even of SATA3 in SATA2 port, performance of SATA3 will still be higher in low cluster operations like 4K and under vs SATA2 drive so why go old when you get more bang for the buck and are more future proof with SATA3 :) I see no point with SATA2 SSD

    Hi all

Just bought a gx660 for a nice price but I have found a strange issue with it.....when I installed Battlefield Bad Company 2 when I load the game up its like the screen isn't in sync (to highlight an icon in the game I have to move to the right and down to where the actual icon is) the only way I have found fixing this is to have LCD Overdrive on in the background to sync up the screen, surely this isn't the way to fix this issue?

Anyone else come across this problem before? I'm new to this type of computer so don't know much about them.

Many thanks if someone knows a solution.

    Hey guys,

I have had the GX660 for about two years now, no problems whatsoever, pretty good machine. However the last couple of weeks I've had pretty huge FPS drops in all kinds of games. Warcraft III and League of Legends are doing fine on a steady 60fps, but when I play ARMA II or even Mark of the Ninja my fps drops to the sub 20's. I think it's my GPU that's overheating (turning down the settings doesn't help) so I downloaded MSI Afterburner to monitor my temperatures and I was correct. CPU is on a steady 60~ but my GPU when idle is around 75C and when I'm gaming it can get as high as 105C. I already cleaned it a bit and removed some dust but it didn't really help at all. I always have turbo-fan on but I don't really think it's helping... what do guys?

Here's a screenshot of CPUID: http://i.imgur.com/0p7Wz.jpg?1 The computer's been on for about 4-5 hours now.

    The specs are:
    CPU: i5-450m
    VGA: ATI Radeon HD5870
    RAM: DDRIII 4GB
    HDD: 500GB 7200RPM

I've cleaned the fan a bit but not much else. I'm scared of taking it all apart to reapply paste and the likes because I haven't been able to find a proper guide. I've pretty much cleaned my pc of all the useless crap and programs I had laying around so I'm sure it's not getting clogged up or something.
I don't really know what drivers I'm using... I'm also not overclocking it, atleast not that I'm aware of.
