Yeah, viewing angles due suck on this machine. Even looking at the screen dead on, the black levels start to wash out a little toward the edges, although it's not as noticeable in a brightly lit room. I often use my external monitor with it for color sensitive projects and gaming.

I'd be curious to know if there's a way to install (or have installed) a better screen.

Would be nice to know if there's a better screen that we can upgrade to.

Another question has anyone noticed worse performance after performing a clean install?

I haven't done a clean install yet, but I've heard several people recommend it, claiming better performance (including a functioning LED Manager).

The LED manager was fine for me out of the box, it was the Start menu shortcut that was messed up. Uninstalling and reinstalling the program fixed it.

Mine worked out of the box, but, nutjob that I am, I put in new hard drives and a fresh install almost immediately.

to guess your old man is based on numerology, but if you upload your image of the bios with ati gpu-z, the study. I do not know the meaning of numerology, but I want to see if anything changes based on the profile and performance of the max volts.

Nice job w/ the 940XM. Could you try a wprime 1024M test and a furmark test at the same times? Check the temps, just curious as to how well the single fan system works.

I am just downloading a game to play, since I am in Iraq it has taken several days using Steam.

I will run the Furmark test and the WPrime 1024 test as well as the temp monitor to show temps at stock.

Yes I am using the original PSU and I am also on the stock memory not 1333 MEM but 1066 MEM.

940XM is this version Intel® Core? i7-940XM Processor Extreme Edition (8M Cache, 2.13 GHz) with SPEC Code(s) SLBSC

Allright here it is Test1 is the first test after the Wprime 1024 was complete the temps of the CPU went down significantly as soon as it stopped but they were never over 75C and the GPU max stable was 79C as you can see the temps significantly dropped as soon as the tests were shut down GPU went down to 60C and CPU went to 56-57C:

Thanks Elmolivez for testing the 940XM with prime & Furmark running. I've been waiting for someone to test a high-end quad in this laptop before I buy the 940XM. I got the impression the single fan wouldn't be able to cope but the temps you posted seem very acceptable for full-load temps.

Are you not experiencing any throttling with the stock PSU?

I haven't seen any throttling but I have not really taxed my system yet I really don't have many games or programs here with me to tax the system. The most taxing game I have right now is World in Conflict, Warhammer II, and Starcraft II. While I have had some issues with Starcraft it is mainly due to the slow internet connection I currently have.

Try the OCCT PSU test and see if your power brick conks out.

Both the stock Liteon and similar-specced Asus PSU shut down about five minutes into the test.

I have this vbios 012.020.000.037.038120 it seems that it is newer than all the others, but the mem clock is at 900 for some reason and the voltages are 1.05v in some cases rather than 900. I think i might flash my card to the older version just for the voltage change (mem doesn't matter I can change that through catalyst overdrive)..... I dont think you can change the voltages for this card also guys as the voltage window is blank and the voltage register buttons are greyed out (im pretty sure just highlighting the box and putting in a voltage doesnt work, but if anyone has any experience with this please post).....

I too am wondering about the PSU unit handling a 920 or 940xm card. What are the other options out there, a Targus PSU?

Maybe thinking of an aftermarket swap. Otherwise, like Emo, I rarely play GPU-heavy taxing FPS games.

Just looking to maximize my SC2 and Civ 5 experiences :D

Hi guys, I've flashed the new bios, and my memory clocks have jumped from 900 mhz to 1000 mhz :D

dnomyar105 in my case, clocks on battery and with ac adapter are the same as before: 405/1000 with ac, and 300/500 on battery. How did you have 100/150? That should really improve battery life.

    FAO: Affirmative inaction.

Heya pal, just to let you know, theres a guy on the ocuk forums that has litterally fitted a 940xm into his gx660r about 20 minutes ago after receiving his and he has confirmed that it works as smooth as silk ;-).

    Might be worth a gander.

(first notebook review forum post from my gx660r ;-) )

EDIT: Ah... upon further reading back through this thread, others have already beaten him to the jump lol. Nevermind ;-)

Two things - One, thanks for the info on the 940 installed in the 660R. I wasn't sure the PSU could handle it without undervolting (which some people swear by, but I'm hesitant to do).

Two - ujmijn: I haven't had that issue with any of my computers, but it's not that uncommon. I would suggest removing the keyboard and checking the underside to attempt to put it back on through the old "push through the hole" method, or at least check to see if there is a broken plastic piece, in which case you may need to RMA for a new keyboard.

Sucks, but hey, I had to do it since I had a HDD error in a RAID 0 array. That was pretty bad. Since then, things running pretty well for me. Of course I have been hesitant to run Vantage and Furmark. Waiting for my RAM upgrades to get here too!

Oh! Speaking of. If anyone in the USA is thinking about this - The price of the system on NewEgg right now for a GX660(non-r) is $1,199. That's... a pretty good deal.

Apparently the GX660R + 940XM can't handle the OCCT PSU test which isn't all that surprising.

And to those discussing the 5870 memory clocks, I have the GX660R and stock clocks are 700/1000 (100/150 idle). BIOS version is 012.020.000.032.038258.

So newer vbios run the Hd5870 at 900mhz? or only non-R versions of the GX660?

If it is a detail only seen on non R versions, thankfully it won't really impact performance because of screen resolution, but it is weird seeing such behavior.

As for PSU, I won't be trying the 180w PSU until later (Only if I find out we can have Mobility 6800 series mounted, and I can get my hands on a 920/940m qs). I will try to get my hands on my previous 150w PSU from Asus, to make the OCCT test and see if it can handle it.

The keyboard itself is actually very easy to remove, there's a thread in this forum on how to. Once the keyboard is removed you can eliminate a lot of flex with strategically placed double-sided tape.
