well, my new laptop doesn't even get to the POST screen anymore, I only get a black screen, HDDs are on, fan is on, but that's it. I've removed the battery for more than 8 hours, tried it again, same results.

It's going back to MSI with RMA, seems i'm not the only one with this issue: http://www.xoticpcforums.com/showthread.php?t=7034

I just came to post my current stable OC speeds which I use to game: 900/1030.

With these I got 13762 3dmark06 and I have yet to test Vantage (My last P9600+ score was with 870/1030) but it should be about the same.

Lost planet 2 all high DX9 is averaging 40fps on both A and B tests.

I can play Crysis all high 1920x1080 over 30fps average (the minimum seems to be 20 so far).

I'll try other games etc to check stability. Furmark 16 minutes reached 86C and never went past that. Current games and tests max at 72C.

Man, I am really happy with my machine.

Hello everyone. I've just bought the GX660 (i5 2,53GHz/5870/4GB) after reading these wonderful reviews on the forum.

I was thinking to get the R version, but it was € 500 extra, but it didn't seem necessary for me. (I've bought it for € 1300, 1800 USD) I'll will receive the laptop Wednesday.

But I was wondering, can you replace the CPU in this laptop, or is it soldered on the main board?

    Thanks. ;)

Same for me. The R version didnt have sense for me because i wanted to get the highest possible fps on games, so the fullhd screen was a disadvantage in my case. More money and less fps :S

However it depends on your budget and your needs: the r version is very good and you can still game at fullhd with very good fps, play a movies, text and image editing, etc.. on a fullhd screen, and a faster processor, more ram and more hdd space and performance, bluray...

In my view, for just gaming, the GX660 is better because the high resolution of the R version will lower your fps a lot, no matter the +2Gb and the i7 upgrade because your graphic card will bottleneck you.

And there's also good to consider that all of us have a unique kick- laptop that almost no one own :D

Doesn't the GX660 have a FullHD resolution? I've mailed with the seller and he told me it had a FHD 1920*1080 screen. He could be wrong of course.

I am considering to get a i7 next year, just to keep he laptop up-to-date.

One more question, does the GX660 also have space for a second HDD?

well maybe you have ordered a special model with fullhd res. There are lots of models.

The one i own is the same version available on xoticpc.

Yes, it has space for another hdd, and upto 12 g of ram.

In my view i would upgrade the cpu till your i5 gets old (and a new processor cheaper and faster), so you will save a lot of money. Actually an i5 is more than enough for the most common tasks.

Yeah waiting is the worst part. The laptop if ****ing awesome ^^. Finally I tweaked it and I'm getting about 50-60 average fps on SC2 @ultra :), with a mininum of 20 and up to 80 sometimes. The next step is getting the same fps with AA enabled + overclock :D

GX660R has the following that the GX660 does not.

    BD Combo

FHD Screen (GX660 only goes to 720p)

    Quad-Core CPU standard

The ability to RAID the HDDs in a RAID 0 array. GX660 lacks RAIDable BIOS.

    Those are the main differences.

If you just wanna play games, get the GX660 for better performance/cheaper price.

If you want it to last and be used for a lot of things, get the GX660R.

No, what you are seeing is the core clock with power plugged in and with battery in use. Open ati overdrive and you will see that core clock comes down from 400 to 300 mhz on desktop, and 700 to 400 when playing, when you unplug the power adapter.

It also depends on your power profile (on ati ccc). I didnt know why starcraft 2 went from 60 fps to about 20-30 sometimes, and it was because of that.

    Greetings!

I have BIOS 012.020.000.032.038258. How do you update your gpu bios? Btw, I wanted to recovery my device, but when I'm in the recovery menu I get the error "Recovery isn't possible in this environment. Please try again later." How can you fix this?

Btw does anyone get the same problem as me, after sleeping when I have left a youtube tab open in chrome, and I then go to play it, it will crash my computer (music plays just the cursor is stuck and I can't do anything at all).

Really annoying, anyone know why. Only thing i've noted is, it doesn't do it on battery.

Because as you and I have the same last bios, I have a gx660 and a gx660r you, you respect me you have default 700/1000 5870m 5870m while I have on my 700/900. I want to edit my bios with +100 mhz on memory. msi gx660r you have, right? you can post a screen of 5870m gpu z?

Then the problem is the bios, even if that is the last (comparing the numerology) has at least 100 Mhz.

Regarding msi afterburning, you may edit the configuration file afterburner and put the vendor id or the type of card?

I use overdrive too much because you can not go beyond the limit 960 gpu/1200 memory.

    unless ..... unlock voltage :)... Intriguing :)

    Hi guys,

Got my GX660R yesterday, gotta say I'm very impressed with nearly every aspect of the laptop. However theres one massive hang up I've got... there's several reviews on the next saying that the black levels and screen quality is awesome on this model, but I can't say I agree.

I've had it sat next to my Toshiba Satellite (Pro P100) whilst copying files over and noticed this....

I can't get over how poor the brightness & black levels are compared... is this a known issue, anyone else had this?

I haven't read anyone praising the black levesl of this machine haha. The problem is the WLED they use for backlight, which offers tremendous brightness specially on very bright areas like outside during the day, but on low light ambients it looks grayish.

The second problem are the viewing angles, which just suck as they are very small. To improve black levels, go to the ati control panel, destkop and displays, configure the panel with 130ish saturation, reduce brightness a bit and adjust contrast to your liking. I do have great colors and I actually use around 30% of the backlight AT MOST, so black levels and colors are not a problem to me. The viewing angles are though.
