Hello. Does anyone know how can i get the modified BIOS for GX660 ? I want my memory run at 1333MHz but the link to MOD BIOS is on megaupload, but megaupload does not exist any more. Maybe someone can send me this BIOS on PM ?

And I've got a question. Does the combination of CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+INS works only on modified BIOS or does it work on a regular BIOS as well ? I cant enter the advanced BIOS settings on my GX660, maybe I am holding those keys in the wrong moment of booting ?

Hi, it works on standard bioses,

You dont HOLD these buttons, you repeatedly pressing them all at same time till you are brought to the bios menu.

You dont need modified bios to unlock memory speed.

For modified bios look few posts above

WOW, thank you for such a quick response. But I still cant get into the secret options menu.

I have got keys on my keyboard: Left SHIFT, left CTRL and left ALT, right SHIFT, right CTRL, right ALT GR, INS on the bottom of the numeric keyboard, INSERT on top of the numeric keyboard. So which one should i press repeatedly and WHEN should i press it ? Should i press them during booting or when I am in BIOS menu ?

Pressing repeatedly quickly enough, must say like 2-3 times per second at least, during boot time when you begin toi see "MSi" logo

    You use

Left Shift + Left CTRL + Left ALT + INSERT over the numeric pad, you are pressing them together at same time ,right after you see "MSi" LOGO begins to show, and continiue repeatedly pressing them till your BIOS opens

dont think youre able to overvolt from BIOS,

by the way do you know the main purpose of over-voltage?

I have got some applications ( like Fishville on Facebook ) that dont use 4 cores but rather one or two. So, with only one core active I can get almost 3GHz, and with all 4 cores active I get only 1,73 per core. So fore some applications it is better to use only 1 or 2 cores rather than 4.

Yes, I've heard. But when I choose, for example, only one core for Internet Explorer ( where the Fishville will be active ) I will rarely achieve 3GHz. Why ? Because Windows will do some background work and there will be always more than one core running, so 3GHz will not gonna be possible. Only blocking cores in BIOS will result in Turbo Boost for one or two cores.

totally weird... why would you need such high CPU frequencies on such low-end app like Facebook games and such ... ? sorry to me looks pointless in what youre trying to do... does it really give you this super-speed after you disable some cores? does it feel any any faster in the game you're playing in facebook?

    Im sorry sounds totally weird.

You achieve more MHz in less cores enabled because you're bottlenecking system with lower core count in example, do you think having 1 or 2 cores active really gives you more performance? your windows and other background apps still require so much performance as before, hence lesser cores means less multitasking with lower load so it gives the exact same whole bunch of work to your CPU but to less cores count thats where you see your cores jump SUPER SAYAN TURBO because of applications requested performance, but in reality you win nothing just loose in background performance. Its like youre driving manual gearbox car and operate with 1 gear instead of 1-2-3-4 gears, but making the 1st gear in the length of 4th, so the top speed stil remains same, but less multitasking like, just revving crap out of your engine.
It usually does not go turbo with all cores enabled because application does not need that much frequency, thats when your CPU runs more efficient when load is carried out much smoother, and tasks are handled quicker easier and CPU cores sent to idle state. Also, watch the temperatures with your several cores disabled, if you do CPU intensive apps processing you will see your temperatures probably higher than before too.

PS: Only XM series can run all their cores constant at 100% with turbo, normal series quads will always be jumping between cores.

Maybe one core is not a good example. But two cores running at 2,53GHz is better than four cores running at 1,73GHz. One core will be for Windows and the other core for Fishville. I've played a little and the game is faster with turbo boost on two cores than turbo boost on four cores. This game may looks simple, but when I have 40 fishes in my tank plus some decorations than it really slows down so much that you can feel it.

Of course for normal use like proper games or video editing I am using 4 cores, cause codec X264 uses 4 cores. But Fishville, nooooo, it is using only one core.

    Hey there :) !

I just wanted to let you know that since you send me your BIOS everything still works smooth and stable as is should. I´m still so happy with the Samsung 830 SSD and i bought myself the M8 with 1 TB ;). Really worth the money, massive storrage and extreme speed from the SSD. What could be better.

The Mhz-raise to 1333Mhz for my Kingston Ram (2x4GB) also works perfect!

Everyone i told my story about the whole situation and your quick and highly professional help really impressed my friends a lot! Sad for MSI that they don´t offer such a support as this forum :).

I just can give everyone the helpful advice that if you want to speed up your system and you can afford an SSD, buy one! It is really worth the money and will give you such an enormous increase of speed.

One more thing UltraGSM, since i did the whole service pack 1 updates and stuff (nothing more installed than two nikon-image-programms, GIMP and Virtual Box) after the windows logo has finished and before the welcome screen appears for a second or so there is a pause from about 4 or 5 seconds between those two screens . What could cause this, it costs me boot-speed ;).

    best regards,
    Grexn

    Great to hear
Booting delays in between windows logo and welcome screen I cant explain, I had this randomly happen on all my machines with SSD's and sometimes disappear after several times of defragmentation. also I dont use system restore feature so maybe this helps me as well, I have 1-2 sec max between boot logo and welcome login msg... try defragler from Piriform - Download CCleaner, Defraggler, Recuva, Speccy - Millions of users worldwide! should help little bit, but not guaranteed... SSD not even to SSD... as a rule system files sometimes gets altered after certain software installations, registry gets updated in certain ways there may be tiny delays between certain records incomparability , those are not vital or errorous but just pre-boot sequence of tasks that may cause the delays...

And once again a fast answer :).

Alright, thank you! It´s no problem for me at all, just wanted to hear what you are thinking about it. 20 sec for the boot is still more than ok for me :D and programms are so much faster now too, so i can´t complain about anything ^^.

cool cool, well I have measured mine GX660R with current spec you see in my signature, boot time to full is also 19-20 sec but I have tons of messenger programs ESET smart security, email clients, irc teamviewer dropbox and good few more. when had i7-740qm used to be approx 22-28sec I measured... its a misterious how different can it be, it used to boot in 13 seconds when it was absolutely bare empty windows 7 only with nothing else installed. also I noticed slowdown in boot after SP1 installation, so youre not alone :D

So true, with the fresh installation it was mind blowing :D. Nobody wanted to believe me that not even 15 secs are possible but when i showed them there was quiet :D. But i think with our 20 secs we are still at the upper end of the food chain ^^.

truth :) Im happy enough with laptop as long as it doesnt take more than 60seconds till I can start work on it, and when I perform tasks I love them to be done at the speed of my mind, instant, all moves in sync, thats a real pleasure. I still want to move off my vertex 3 SSD to new non sand-force controlled chip SSD from OCZ, so no data compression is being done and just direct write to drive flash memory, more IOPS more response... maybe RAID0 for fun two of these Vertex4 indilinx2 256GB? should be pretty sweet (not sure if worth it)

Oh one thing I remember now, after I upgraded my video drivers I got this delay before startup, it was flawless on ATi 12.1 driver and since I upgraded to 12.4 I got bucket of crap, games ran worse, lagging, driver crashes, and now Irecall this happening with delay in booting, it must be it I think... not guaranteed tho

You should never de fragment an SSD :/

Also if your unlocked bios is the same as mine you can actually set how many cpu cores are active, so you could disable HT and all but one core ^-^

know...what I said makes no sense for SSD... my bad, I just felt like it helped for me hehehe

actually got very curious about my boot times so went and rebooted system took chronometer and measured:

From pressing powerbutton till state where before windows start boot logo appears actual loading of OS begins = 8 Seconds

Windows loading time till I see desktop wallpaper and begining of loading all the programs = 10seconds

complete wait time 21second from state before windows loading logo shows up till every last software is fully loaded and ready to rock including antivirus and firewall and other crap I have... Im impressed myself hehehe :)

Getting used to it so it again feels like a LONG TIME... :D

So is anyone going to try to get a 7970M into this laptop? :) I've owned this since it just came out but now the 5870M is getting a bit old for recent games, I would like to upgrade to a 920xm + 7970M so I hope there will be someone who can make a tutorial on how to install this since I've never upgraded a laptop before(I did built my own desktop pc, but that's easy since there's lots of space)

Im having a plan getting 7970m in to my lappy, current usual spec GX660R + 12gb ram/ ssd / 5870m / 940xm / BDRW drive etc etc, so 7970m would fullfill this one to the last point... probably another month and I will get there

any how-to's are always helpfull, so no nasty surprises and no horror storries retro fitting brand new sparkling gpu under wrongly modded heatsink... lol all little bits help ;) it would take off bags of pressure and stress for me doing this mod in a short future time, so I believe would for most of ppl owning the same series heatsinks

    Hello! :)

I have get back my GT 663 and it is awesome :) But I have 2 questions :)

1: Why can't i overclock my GPU? It is a gtx 460m. I use MSI afterburner. I can only overclock the memory. I have test to disable and enable the NVIDIA overclock tool but nothing work.

    2. Why can I only overclock my CPU max 7%?. I stands at 5% before. It is the Turbo frequency I overclock. Not the NON turbo.

    Laptop is a Medion X6811 (originally 740QM, 6Gb RAM, GTX 460M & 2 x 500 7k rpm HDD) which is a rebranded barebone ms-16f1 or GT663.

From another post on here :

"The gx660 is the same as the gt660, some models ending in 3 and +R and in asia ms-16f1"

I obviously needed to get the 5870m heatsink but you will be ok. See the 7970m heatsink modification for more details. If you have a 120W PSU you will need a 150W minimum especially with the 920XM.

3dmark11 score with cpu o'c and gpu at stock:

Hey all, I know I'm entering in a little late, but is there any available bios that will allow me to use my new Vertex 4 SSDs in raid mode? It seems that all custom bios files on this thread have been taken down from their hosts. It would be much apprecaited!

Guys I have an AOU screen glossy and the blacks are bad at different angles. Watching movies in bed with the GF drives me mad, what screen would you recommend to replace it with.

LG Philips LP156WF1-TLF3. For me it is good. Watching movies in bed no problems like on AUO glossy crapy lcd.

majster MSI, do you think you could repost one of those modded bios versions you have? I need to run my dual SSDs in Raid 0. Thanks!
