I agree, it was false marketing. The only responsive LED feature is the audio mode, which is severely lacking. For the side monitor lights to respond well, the volume has to be turned up. There is also a severe delay between beats in music and the lights response. But for fun, the breathing feature is alright :)

This is the problem we have in the west part of the world :p haha...but i noticed that the sound feature only works with the laptop speakers and not if u connect it to a hifi receiver with a toslink cable...however GX660 rules!!!

anyone followed there instructions on how 2 do it?

    Audio Synchronize Mode

When listening to music, watching a video or when knee-deep in the exciting world of gaming, simply press the MSI LED light performance control hotkey and the GX660R enters Audio Synchronize Mode. Then, the GX660R’s LED lights on both sides of the notebook and at the front of the keyboard will light up all at once. The light performance will follow different changes in sound, allowing you to unconsciously follow the rhythm of the dynamic lighting and envelop yourself in an atmosphere of sound and light that will leave you breathless!

im sure there must be a way just not an obvious or it only works with certain things lol im being very vague.
you would think that theyd give you a clip i.e the bullet thing they mention to demostrate

    Hi, guys,
I think my GPU grease compound has reached its perfect "cure point". No matter how hard I push it, it never goes above 60ºC. And the same goes for CPU, it´s running cooler than before (never above 66C). This break in period is really important, regarding to thermal compound.
By the way, has someone noticed any difference on CPU usage after last Windows 7 updates? I mean, high activity in idle status? And not just for a few minutes after first boot, the non stop thing lasts for hours, and just calm down when I reboot. Weird. My OS is Ultimate 64.
    Thanks.

i agree with u...temps are fantastic here to,,however i replaced it with arctic silver 5...in dead space 2 i never get over 60c on gpu and 55c max on cpu...with crysis2 60-65c on gpu and 55-60c on cpu...its mad GOOOD!!! this is after 2 hours of constant gaming!!

Seems I might get mine sooner than I thought, hehe... Apparently there's some kind of price war going on here in The Netherlands at the moment.

Some models of the GX660 just dropped 300 (!!) euros in price, last week. And a lot of shops are participating in the competition.

Good news... good news indeed. :D

Porre is an interesting char. It means drinking like hell in portuguese.
60ºC on Crysis 2 is really incredible! I just got "below 60" on CPU (in fact it´s just core 3 that reaches 66, the others tend to be at 57-61 at most) if my room temp is about 18ºC or less, what means fighting with my wife :). So I have to keep the whole house warm (23+) all the time. I´d repaste if I had the nerve to do it by myself, but I don´t. My son will pay me a visit in December, and he is up to the task. Untill there, I´ll just keep my fan clean.
    Greetz!

The MSI GT780R is soon to be released. It seems that it has a backlight keyboard. But from what I have seen of the pictures it seems that the keyboard has the same size as the MSI GX660. So do you guys think that we soon get a backlight keyboard? Because that would be awesome. That is the only thing that the MSI GX660 misses.

So I´ve purchased Artic Silver Kit with cleaning fluids and the paste itself. Question: should I repaste just CPU and GPU or is there any other part, like chipset or something? I´ve found nothing on Google or You Tube regarding to this particular model, and since I´m just a player and don´t have a clue about anything but cleaning the fans, I d really appreciate some help, if you guys don´t mind.
    Thanks in advance.

hey man! only repaste the cpu and gpu, as Forge said, leave the thermal pads for chipset and gpu memory alone. its best. because if you repaste the chipset with artic silver i think the contact between heatsink and chipset will not be good thats why u should leave the pads! sayonara :p

    Thank you, buddy!
Another doubt I have is on repasting method. Artic Silver instructions, found on its own site, advise to use the spread method: http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appmeth/int/ss/intel_app_method_surface_spread_v1.1.pdf
On the other hand, I´ve found tons of articles wich advise NOT TO USE spread method, cause heatsink pressure will form bubbles. These articles claim there are three good methods: Pea, Line and Cross. But I´ve noticed that Artic Silver doesn´t spread so easily, so not spreading could be inefficient: YouTube - How Thermal Compound Spreads
Then, in the middle of this crossfire, a poor noob gets lost...
What method do you guys use?
    Thanks again.

I used the artic silver 5 one week ago and i would say spreading is best for AS5 because as u said it doesnt spread that well. I did a thin layer and its worked out moore then well...i have lower temps right now,,,i used to idle 39 on gpu and 38 on cpu now the numbers are 36 and 30 and remember that the AS5 has a 200 hour burn time(that will cut off maybee 2-3c moore =D) but if u notice that the heat is worse then before, give the spread method one moore try ;)....take care

Yes I updated my vBios to the newest one, with incressed volt (1.15v) to get a stabel clock at 900.

With standard (1.05v)I couldn't get it stabel at 800. I'm using stock PSU 120Watt with no problem.

    Hello,

My name is Rossen and I am your fellow Bulgarian. I am thinking of buying the same notebook as you (GX660-253EU), but I wanted to ask you several questions about it.

Drop me a line at [hamorphis AT gmail DOT com] if you want to help me. I am particularly interested in how well does it handle games. The game I want to play on it is Civilization 5.

    Thanks in advance.

    Dear MSI GX660 (-253EU) owners,

Has anyone played a late-game Civilization 5 on a large/huge map with many civs on his MSI? I want to buy one, but I must be sure that CIV V will be able to run in its late-game. I am buying the laptop solely for CIV V, since I hardly ever play anything that does not start with Civ- or Col- :D :D

Before you start, I know that desktop computers are the ones for playing games and I have one at home, but just accept that I need to play CIV V on a laptop because I cannot move my desktop each time I hit the road and go out of town.

    Thanks in advance.

Extremely happy with this laptop (non r version).

I have yet to find a game unplayable at native res and maxed out settings.

    My list of games:

    Crysis 1 and 2
    Borderlands
    Startcraft 2
    Half-Life series
    Prototype
    GTA IV
    +more

I plan on getting some more 2011 games without worry that this laptop can handle them flawlessly. Good job MSI

    BTW I did some upgrades, 4GB -> 8GB, 500 GB HDD + 60 GB VERTEX 2 SSD

Any future hardware upgrades would probably be CPU related, but to be completely honest, the standard core i5 is golden for my gaming desires.

    First of all, thank you.

I believe that Civ 5 has a "late-game" benchmark built in. You can simply run this benchmark and see how it performs. Currently, I am at work and cannot find the exact link to this benchmark description (gaming sites are blocked), but I can check this when I get back home.

    Thank you for your help.

right so i did the "lategame" benchmark after looking into it on google.
However i couldnt get it to log results correctly -.-

so used fraps and did 2 benchmarks
dx9- Average 25-30 with dips to 20 when zooming in and aout and scrolling at the same time
dx11-Average 19-25 dosent dips lower than 18 fps

    Note:this is with stock clocks and a i5 :D

Is it possible to use this Raid BIOS on a NON-Raid GX660, and then gain the RAID option?

Or should I use the 1.0J Bios for GT660 on my GX660?

If your GX660 did not come with RAID as standard then I would suggest using the non-RAID bios. RAID 0 is dodgy anyway!

If you have a gx660 with raid 0 then get the 3.0j

If you have a gx660 without raid you still need to use that bios update as its meant for that model etc.

All you have to do is flash your machine with the raid bios, install the 2nd drive and the raid utility will show up. In the bios setup after flash with the raid bios raid will be the default option. You can also turn it off if you need and the machine will act the same as a non-raid machine. You will see both disks show up in the raid utility and you must add them as member disks. After you add them raid will be functional. When the raid utility shows up on the screen press crtl+I and you will enter the raid setup.

The clunks are quite and occur my secondary drive. The primary drive is a SSD. The noise occurs all the time. The stock drive (Hitachi 5K500) did this and my new drive does this (Hitachi 7K500).

Does anyone else have the problem with Skype microphone volume?

This laptop has an awesome webcam and dual mics, but I can't talk to people in Skype because the microphone volume is way too low.

It is better when I test it Windows Sound Recorder, but still kinda low.

you have to configure your mic in the sound options/imput in control panel, only once then will work fine for all the programs, i suggest to turn off the speakers boost in realtek cp if you gonna use the laptop's mic
