Assumptions based on hands-on user reports.

Reports for both CPU's have been that 4.0ghz on all 4 cores is a safe setting. Some haven't been able to get their 6820HK to 4.0ghz stable, but all the 6920HQ owners reporting early on have made 4.0ghz no problem.

The non-OC base/turbo settings for the 6920HQ are 200mhz higher than the 6820HK, so that works nicely for those that don't want to OC.

6920HQ turbo is 3.8ghz, close enough to 4.0ghz for a non-OC buyer, 200mhz faster than the max 3.6ghz turbo from the out of the box 6820HK:

    http://ark.intel.com/compare/88972,88969

I tune back from the top OC on a CPU for day to day use, so 4.0ghz is good for me. I'm into using the laptop for things other than benchmarking.

I would buy the 6920HQ, that's how comfortable I am with it. :)

Nah, in this case I could live with it. Remember, I went to the MSI test drive event so I got to see all the new machines. :)

Looking forward to seeing what the 1080 SLI GPU temps are under load, as compared to the Clevo DM3! If the temps are significantly better that could be a tipping point for some to more strongly consider going with the MSI.

We received numerous reports of smoke coming from the gentech building and whitness accounts of John's car leaving the premises shortly after...one report mentions him saying "I only pressed one button"! :D

No, No, No, No, No, that's not what happened. The sheriff got word that John might attempt a siege of GenTech, called the Governor, who called in the National Guard. Now I just spoke with the site commander, who reports the smoke was NOT coming from the GenTech building, but rather John's ears and car tires, and he sped away screaming, "I ONLY WANTED TO PUSH ONE BUTTON"!

The GT83VR is safe and sound, under guard, and it will remain so until secreted to a secure location. Not to worry folks!

    ACER unveils Predator 21X...

Its design similar to GT83VR but with bigger (and curved) screen. I wonder whether Striker will consider getting one > :)

Tbh it's better just to get desktop. It weights 8kilos which makes it kind of not portable. Also size. I have no idea how big bag back have to be to fit 21 inch laptop.

5 fans. Monster size. This is the new king of kings, easily.

    "a 7th-generation Intel Core K-series processor"

So pathetic that Alienware has nothing to offer. Now they're losing to ASUS, MSI, Clevo (was losing anyway) and now Acer of all brands. The worst notebook manufacturer in the world as far as reliability. :/

    No stupid trackpad:

I just don't like the idea of having to flip the numpad over to get to the track pad. Wonder if it works like a remote or does it have to be recessed in the laptop to work.

If it comes with a 6700k, and doesn't over heat with true thunderbolt. 4k G-sync@60hz or higher. all parts accessible.I think it would trump them all. Plus, the dual power supply port is actually on the machine. Interesting.

But to be honest, No @-=$tR|k3r=- would not get one. He has a home with MSI.

Remain on topic. If you are disgusted by how the future did not pan out as expected with the MSI upgrades, you are free to vent at the appropriate topic. No need to spread to every single topic. As you may feel, does not mean all users feel that way. Some may be perfectly happy with whatever they are using/purchased.

I also don't like what seems to be dual fans cooling, which is the one thing I didn't particularly love about my GT80. Otherwise I actually like it.

EDIT: Nevermind, hadn't read about the cooling solution yet.

I'll have to wait and see before passing any real judgements on it, but it would be in the same class as the GT83VR in that it's 18" and higher. As soon as one goes on display locally, I will go have a look and see what's what....

Also, as you mentioned, Im instantly not a fan of the flipping touchpad/numpad. Why can't the make the touchpad the weird blue design on the top right? I don't mind moving my arm up there instead of having to flip a device.

You can't eliminate good or bad postings just because they are of contrary view. Postings are eliminated when they break forum rules. People might be genuinely happy and their experience will be completely different than yours or mine. Eliminating posts saying "no, MSI is bad and they can't be good" is just as false advertising just because we got into this situation.

We keep topics alive and allow users to express themselves, but also the important thing is to create useful information. By having topics dedicated to the issues we experience either by model, type, brand, reseller etc, we have information for users available. It's not the same to say "MSI IS BAD AND LIED" than to say "Hey, MSI promised GPU upgrades for certain models and couldn't fulfill those, and is doing something else instead, for it"

Going into topics where people are content, and then tell them MSI is bad and you shouldn't promote them, is only making noise to the topic. Specially if it's a model that is completely unaffected to begin with.

This subforum is about MSI computers specifically. We are not affiliated to MSI directly, so we allow the conversations to happen. But you will find both good and bad experiences and all are allowed. Just remember the forum rules :)

from the looks of the inside, 1 fan per two nvme pcie ssds, total of 4 m.2 unsure if all 4 are nvme pcie. one of them could be sata 6gbps. of course without seeing the new mobile chipset it might be capable of support 4 of pcie ssds.

only 2 ram slots from the looks of it, cant find where the battery is and almost guaranteed bga cpu..

while you're at it Caercadarn, replace your 4960x with 1680v2, 8 core clock to 4.4ghz in your p570wm lol

since the acer wont be actually available to use/play untill q1 2017, its too little too late in the life cycle of the gtx 1080 (6 months after video card is released)...if the acer survives the initial sales expectations, and gets an updated model in h2 2017, that autumn 2017 model maybe worth it with the 1080ti sli or whatever they call next years version.. right when the new video card comes out

if one were to purely look at getting new hardware and upgrades, as well as GPU then its not a smart buy indeed. for those looking for niche, nice large display and looks, this is a good buy. the last time we had a 20 inch laptop was HDX9000, which was 2008 i think, over 8 yrs ago.

ugh now that u mention it, looks like this laptop wont do without a mouse lol. that touchpad will always be face down with numpad facing up..

It has trackpad, the numberpad is detachable and you can flip it around and re-attach it as trackpad.
I prefer MSI design though, trackpad/numberpad using switch button instead of having to flip-up flip-down.

The weird blue design on the top is actually transparent ( fiberglass? ) cover that shows internal fans spinning.
I think it's really cool, MSI can do this for their next GT8x series, using transparent material for the front cover. Or better yet, for both front and bottom cover. Fiberglass anyone?

Nice score. My Firestrike bench only 13.800, so 7000 points raise for 1080 SLI, 50% performance raise over 980M SLI.

We do appreciate the info, but if you would please post the URL to the scores so we can load it from another site that would be very helpful.

Right now NBR is having problems completely drawing pages - so I can't scroll to the right to see the whole score info area, and worse NBR isn't bringing up images hosted here every time - so when I refresh to redraw the page the image doesn't come up, when I refresh to bring the image up the page doesn't draw...

The URL is useful for making side by side comparisons too.

We aren't going to judge based on quick tests, we know you will work on bring the scores up over time :)

excellent Gentech TY very much for taking out those heatsink and allow a closer look. MSI did a great job on that CPU heatsink there, the two original pipes go towards the two original fans along with new pipes on a new fan, just what i was hoping for. can underclock those GPU and giving cooling priority to CPU, pack this with a decent binned cpu chip and it'll be a very decent laptop, if it wasn't for the acer 21x coming in a few months..

@ 22:06 that m.2 or msata slot? it says msata but the form factor is m.2 i know it'll be sata for sure though.

@GenTechPC you skipped showing the results of the 3dmark11 score for the GT83VR?

It's nice comparing the GT73VR single 1080 review information to the GT83VR 1080 SLI information.

MSI GT73VR NVIDIA GTX 1080 Review & Benchmarks

It will be fun to see the OC / tuned results of both down the road a bit. :)

Those cooling towers for the GPU's and CPU in the GT83VR are awesome :)

It looks like the 1080's in SLI are all gonna run at or near 90c under load.

The SLI 1080 was 91c CPU 86c/90c GPU peak in FS, the single 1080 was 76c CPU and 82c GPU.

It's nice to see the single 1080 compared to the 1080 SLI score at stock settings 15261 Total / 21725 GPU vs 20367 Total / 38069, 75% higher GPU score in SLI.

Both CPU's can benefit from OC to 4.0ghz on 4 cores.

@GenTechPC please tune the 6820HK in the BIOS to 40x on 4 cores, and using TS/XTU please do the same for the 6920HQ, and please re-run both on FS to see the Physics score.

Both CPU's are kinda low scoring at stock, 10033 vs 10726, both should get up over 12-13k @ 4.0ghz.

Thanks again for running the tests and doing the exhilarating tear downs :D

Am I the only one who noticed that the 1080's in the GT83VR are smaller and have no external power connector compared to the single 1080 in the GT73VR which is huge and has an external power connector?

That's probably one of the reason MSI said it wasn't compatible with previous GT80? Maybe they are routing full power through the connector or something, instead of using the aux.

True. If we take a look at MXM 3.0b pinout we can see that there are several reserved pins.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/attachments/mxm-3-0b-7970m-pinouts-jpg.117904/

Now if we take a look at gt73vr with gtx1080 we see that you need extra 6 pins for power connector. I believe MSI could've used those reserved pins for extra power delivery in order to save some space. Also it is same situation with gt80s and gt72s which use gtx980dt cards.

I'm not an expert but I think it is not possible with any software to make those reserved pins to be extra power connectors (if this is the case).

Stop at 18:46 to see power connector.

Yeah, another form of avoiding providing backward compatible Pascal MXM GPU upgrades.

Why take the most power hungry card and feed power through those aux lines, and not do it for every other GPU, and make it a standard?

Especially when the single 1080 card uses a power connector, why not use the aux lines with this one as well?

FYI, there is nothing special about the HB bridge wires, it's just got more of them. The daisy chain connector that would be used to bridge to a 3rd or 4th GPU are used along with the normal connector to get more bandwidth.

The SLI cable does look wider - the one in the GT80 980m SLI is a "skinny" ribbon cable in comparison.

MSI could have, should have, made compatible Pascal MXM GPU cards for upgrades.

There's no extra magic here that couldn't have been done as an upgrade Pascal MXM GPU.

Graphics score looks ok but the CPU is killing it. Any one going to post some 4.0 or 4.2ghz runs? The 1st generation GT80 scores almost 14k and others close to 15k, to have more than double the GPU at only be at 20k has me a bit stumped.

I shouldn't leave out , Thank you to Gentech aka Ken for the transparent review as always.

at this point 1080 is a cpu limited resolution, for which sli1080 is definitely overkill so that test at that rez, is not gona scale right going forward...... firestrike ultra or extreme, rather than overall score, should be a more indicative test of game performance at higher rez, like 1440, 1440UW, or 4k.......around 14k on extreme and 8500 ultra should be about proper perf versus stock desktop 1080sli

Test one seems to be about 25 fps behind while test 2 is about 4 frames ahead. That being at stock gpu clocks and stock cpu clocks.

Exactly cpu is struggling but if clocked up to the 4.0ghz I wonder how it would stand.

And we all know single gpu scores higher on physics....
And that is 4.3 ghz on all 4 cores.

The link is a 1070 and the images seem to be broke. I think the forum has been behaving weird the past few days.

Have you seen anyone else with higher Physics scores on single vs sli?

I haven't, except for the stock BIOS on with Clevo PM870DM, but Prema fixed that. Maybe it's only Clevo's on stock BIOS where that is seen?

The symptom is that under high GPU load the CPU is starved for resources and performance drops. It's not just Fire Strike, it's all CPU use under heavy GPU usage on Clevo stock BIOS.

My Physics score 4x @ 4.1ghz is still higher than the 6820HK CPU:

It's gotten much worse since the recent system work, but it's been like this for months now.

Broken images, partially drawn pages. It was liveable before, but now it's not. Gonna have to take a break, it's tiring to keep refreshing pages and lose function with the partial redraws.

Yes, all the time, this is a fact.
    http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/9677720/fs/9846237

As to you and this physics thing. You win some you lose some.
    Example:
It's like your XTU score for 4.3/4.2/4.2/4.2 ghz loses a 4.0 ghz 6820hk.

    vs
    [IMG]

Things just happen. It's good to know that the 5950hq is able to compete. And that is a good thing for those who have this cpu installed, but at the end of the day just like all parts. 1 particular cpu can't win them all, but for gaming they are all pretty much fine and dandy to work with.

When or if I get back to it. I'll try to do a more thorough analysis as to why you are ahead by 1.44 fps. over the 6820hk, just not right now.
