It's usually the coil whine for the GPU on a NB because there were some that reported such issue in the past.

If I recall coil whine is to be expected on this series of GPU.
When I got mine it would whine and chug as it "thought" but it has since quieted down.

The fans work fine. They where the first thing I checked. Lol
It sounds like an older computer.

I just received my GT83 yesterday and yes I do notice a noise similar to yours. I haven't investigated any further because I was drawn into every other detail the nb had to offer. With a quick visual/hearing inspection, the first thing that came to mind from that noise was the speakers. I figured there might be some interference since during the setup process of my "gaming station" the rear of the nb is pretty much sitting on top of an arm full of cables...power, audio, ethernet, coaxial, etc. I will take a closer look tomorrow. Oh and I was in turbo mode, I did not cycle through the modes to see if the buzzing was still present, but I did unplug the power cord and 90% of the noise went away. I know I was in high performance mode, I think my battery powered mode would be the recommended setting because I haven't changed it.

Hey guys got my new replacement and all is well. No more constant buzzing noise. Something is wrong with that other one, maybe something is not shielded properly causing a lot of interference. But I can finally enjoy this beast and hopefully upgrade the hard drives soon.

anyone here got a 7820HK? how is it compared to 6820HK when overclocked

I just ran the firestrike benchmark. I think it seems to be on par with most 1070 sli laptops. This is with the newest NVidia drivers, and all NVidia cp options at default settings.

I would highly recommend it as well as the Asus competition. Both are from what I have experianced and read superb monitors.

All in all it cost me about 7K in CAD.
That being said it was mind blowing to play witcher 3 in ultra wide 1440p at 94fps. (Previously at 720p 20-40fps)

After looking at the manual there appears to be 4 hard drive slots(one 2.5, two nvme, and one m.2 sata). I guess I'm surprised there is only one 2.5 inch slot however. I assumed there would at least be two 2.5 slots given the size of this laptop but taking into account the cooling system and mechanical keyboard, I suppose space is limited. So is it possible to set a raid setup on the 2 nvme ssd slots? Looks like I'll be keeping the mechanical drive after all, and just upgrade it to 3tb or 4tb. What are you guys running?

Run the Configurator on our site and you will see that it is available.

I think all gt83's with an "off the shelf" configuration come with nvme ssd in raid

My 7920HQ cpu temps sits around 90-100c on full load (turbo boost). Then of course throttling happens. I don't think that's normal. What's your temps at full load?

that's the best value for no CPU throttling
this will require a reboot and it will tell you that some settings could not be applied, ignore that, it will be applied nevertheless
also try -110mV undervolt this time for the CPU in the voltage offsetDonald@Paladin44 and iAsianiGame like this. -

if its me i'd shoot that cpu and try for 5ghz knowing kabylake has better silicon quality than skylake and mod the crap out of the heatsink.

Think my 1tb hard drive that came with my notebook is failing. It makes this frog like noise and windows is constantly running a disk check at boot on it.

You can check the HDD while booted in Windows, right click on the Disk Icon, and select Properties => Error check and try doing a low level block check to remap bad blocks.
If your laptop is constantly booting into a disk check on the boot partition - should be the RAID0 M.2 SSD's - I'd backup all your personal files, create the MSI BurnRecovery 32GB USB 3.0 recovery boot drive so you can reinstall the out of the box OS should it fail.
I had a bad M.2 SSD that failed quickly, and the symptom was disk check issues like you are seeing.
So I created the 32GB USB 3.0 flash drive using MSI BurnRecovery, backedup my personal files, and made an image of the C drive using Macrium Reflect Free so I could restore it to a single M.2 SSD after splitting the RAID0.
Then I could deal with a potential SSD failure 1 drive at a time.
I was lucky, the bad drive was the drive I didn't use to restore the Macrium Reflect system image, so I could pull it and replace it with new SSD's.
If you only have a single storage device, the HDD, then do the same backups and get an M.2 drive to act as your boot drive and restore to it, before the HDD fails.
If you have any questions on the process, please post here and let us knowhedehede81 likes this. -

I cannot figure out how to remove the top section just above the keyboard to remove the 2.5 mechanical hard drive. Every video shows the bottom panel being removed. The mechanical hd requires the top panel to be removed though. I'm hesitant to remove the whole bottom panel because of the "void warranty sticker." I cannot believe MSI did that lol. OMG. That is such a lame move. I mean seriously you don't do that on a laptop like this which is meant to be upgraded lol. -

Ok got it off. Looks like there are only two screws that need to be removed however at least I see only two places once I removed the panel. However, one of those places is indeed where the warranty sticker was.
And it appears that the bottom needs to be removed to gain access to the screws that mount the hard drive to the chassis...hmmm..unless I'm missing something - oh nm it just lifts upLast edited: Mar 29, 2017NuclearLizard likes this. -
I would suggest filing a Technical question through MSI product registration for your laptop to verify that disturbing the Warranty Sticker to gain access to change storage and memory is allowed - get it in "writing" in the form of an email response just in case things change. I do this each time with vendors for many years, and all have answered that it's ok.
Yes, that's where the HDD is, top right under the top access panel. Remove the "warranty sticker screw" accessible under the laptop, then slide the panel right (or left, it may change between models) and lift up the panel.
When I pull the HDD I disconnect the HDD cable at the motherboard, not the HDD - it's easier to remove and reattach the large connector at the HDD when it's out of the laptop - at least for me. You may need a bright flashlight to see well enough to get a hold of the connector to pull it out, don't pull on the cable pull on the connector - lift straight up - I rest my hand on the HDD and use movement of my fingers to lift instead of pulling with my arm / hand.
The HDD / cable will lift right out, there are no retaining screws, the material surrounding the 2.5" bay makes a snug fit, just lift it up gently.
Note that the top panel fits flush over the HDD compartment, you can't fit a "fat" 2.5" in there, only up to 9.5mm, I tried fitting a 15mm and it's not gonna fit without a cut out in the top panel, and then you might have trouble closing the lid - it would touch the screen.
I prefer to keep hot devices outside the laptop, and don't use HDD's or Hybrid HDD's internally. Use a nice 2.5" SSD that will run cooler.
That whole area under the panel can get quite hot if you have a full complement of M.2's and a hot HDD - the CPU is right under the motherboard between the M.2 slots - 3 on left side of CPU and 1 on Right side - at least on the GT80.Last edited: Mar 29, 2017hedehede81 likes this.
