This is one of the best laptops I have ever owned, and performance is beyond comprehension, though with a catch, especially here in JP.

Everything about this laptop, the build quality the specifications, and everything else I can see are top notch, but do any of you guys know, about MSI service in Japan. Though this may be one of my favorite laptops that i have purchased of all times, the service is just completely atrocious over here in Japan. I'm at such a loss, since I have gone through so many MSI laptops, and all of a sudden with the Pascal series, including my gt80, gt62vr, gt72vr, gt73vr, and now the gt83vr 1080sli model, every single laptop I have bought from MSI, in recent history in Japan have been amazing. Up until, this nightmare that I am currently having with my 6920hq gt83vr gtx 1080sli laptop, the service/ support here in Japan, when I say atrocious, is really putting it mildly, and all the information about overclocking, CPU and GPU, have been a mixed bag, and the information is told by me, wildly dependent on country. Now I'm aware that the model SKU's vary by country with the different models except for the Titan SLI being a rarity, do you guys have some guidance on how I should proceed. They will not even tell me what kind of monitor I have, and will refuse to answer questions about the "Overclockability" of my laptop, even though I purchased this laptop from a licensed distributor. The current MSI Japan support personnel on my tickets, are currently refusing to even answer my question regarding the make and model of vital components of my system, and are completely unwilling to even answer my questions, when I ask them if the Global warranty was publicity stunt or not. I would really be greatful if one of you guys could point me in the right direction. I have bought many MSI laptops in the past, and the service has been great, but here in Japan, I mean, I can't be vulgar, but really, seriously?

@FL2GO what are you looking for specifically?

Your moniter is the same one that is in the gt80 (s) I'll try and dig it up for you. But it's in my opinion a decently solid 1080p/60 htz ips screen.

If yours is a 6920hq you have the same one as me. Check out the Canadian site and look for the 45 or 44 CA models.

The 6920hq can over clock in a limited fashion. I use Intel XTU that comes pre loaded on your machine (possibly it has on everyone elses) and you should be able to get 4.0 on all cores.

Edit: msi globally us a bit uptight with over clocking. Their official stance is "probably shouldn't" but what they don't know won't hurt them. ;)

When I say overclock ability because when I purchased this laptop directly from MSI here in Japan, I was promised that my laptop would be able to auto boost to x40 multipliers under warranty, on turbo boost mode. I was also promised that it was a IPS monitor, and it said so on the website, but apparently they changed it or something in the last month or so and now it stipulates, IPS level. They will refuse to me what IPS level means, and they refuse to admit that it is an PLS monior. This is just getting extremely ridiculous and though I bought it direct from MSI Japan, I feel like I'm being thrown under the bus. Yes, to anyone that is asking if I am a native English speaker, since I was born and raised in Hollywood Hills California, I am also half Japanese decent, and have lived in Japan for 11 years of my 30 year life so far. I travel often, and when they refuse to even answer to blatantly disregard the types of component specs in my computer, it really worry's me to even bring this computer out of Japan, as they have refused to answer whether or not they will honor the global warranty or not, and this is really driving me nuts. If I bring the computer out of Japan, I feel as if my computer will be completely void of warranty. I have heard, but not experienced any horror stories so far, and I have global warranties from the US on my gt62vr and gt80 Titan SLI, and these have been completely covered.

I actually already know exactly what this monitor is, I don't even have to check, but since MSI Japan will not explain the make or model number, from their side, they will not say whether it will be my warranty if it were to break overseas or something like that, so since I own a tech company I actually know exactly what I have, and I know I can check via these programs, I am no newbie when it comes to these kinds of information. But with the CPU I was promised by MSI that x40 multiplier over 4 cores for 4ghz x 4, but I did not really know about the CPU. I just know that under intel xtu that it stipulates that the Intel 6920hq CPU can hold 4ghz over 4 cores without any modifications, and I was told that it would be a more powerful system than the gt73vr 6820hk CPU under Turbo boost CPU mode, in the Dragon Control Center. This was a main stipulation, since it was explained to me on purchase date about 1 month ago that on first CPU it could multiply 1st, x44, 2nd x42, 3rd, x41, 4th, x40, which would be in the dragon center.

Hmmm, I'm not sure about out of the box overclocking to 4.0 on all as mine only goes to 3.6 without me fussing with it in XTU, however I dumped dragon center fast.....

Out of the box the 6920hq is faster however you can play more with the HK.

As for your warrenty if you havent had an issue before I cant see an issue now, mind you I don't travel but I would assume nothing has changed in that regard.

So, I feel like I have been completely lied and cheated on, and they got my 5500USD, and that's that. No service or support, whatsoever, and a terrible attitude to boot. I also speak Japanese Natively, which I do not reveal to the service center, and the aurora of superiority and complete lack of respect that these guys display, on their emails, not even letting me contact them via phone, since it is deemed, unnecessary by the current support guy. This is craziness, and is just back and fourth everyday, of complete nonsense and disrespect towards a half Gaijin (Foreigner), like myself, which I ain't. They continue to refuse to answer my questions in regards to the warranty if I were to bring it out of the country and if it were to break, and whether it would be supported under the purported, Global Warranty, which they continue to avoid, answering me, yes or no, it is completely ambiguous and disheartening. Like I said they will refuse to answer the question, "Will my warranty be honored if I take it out of Japan and bring it back for service," this is really madness. Right now they are having trouble even getting the specs for the sRGB 100% coverage they promised me, and it has been over a week, and they are having to speak with Taiwan, they have absolutely no answers. Yes I am a content creator, yes I have special tools to monitor the correct RGB and color calibration of my monitor, but I was promised IPS technology, and now they are saying IPS level, and will not even admit to the fact that I know it's a sPLS/PLS monitor, and I know this after purchasing it and trying to calibrate the screen, even though the two technologies are completely separate, they just say it's IPS level, and you have an IPS screen, in a demeaning tone, because I have not revealed I speak perfect Japanese, Business, and university level, since I was 0yrs old. But allowing me to change my profile shows how they are willing to support people, and to be honest, this allows me to see their true colors. Another thing is, I could really give two craps about the price, I have 3 backup laptops, which all have 1080 sli's, I have the funding and capital to purchase these things, I don't care how expensive it is, what I care about is the continuity of service, which is completely lacking. In my case.

I was guaranteed by MSI Japan on purchase that it would out perform the x40 multipliers on the 6820HK CPU, which is 3.98ghz x 4 cores on Turbo mode, under warranty, when temps permit. I was speaking about the Turbo mode in the Dragon Center that was promised to me by MSI Japan, which they stipulated would Turbo to up to x44 or 4.377ghz on first core, and so on and so fourth, in dragon control center, in under warranty turbo boost mode, but it completely non existent now, among other things.

Remember not just that but they are now toying with me and delaying with me for the excuse that they said the gt83vr is not only HDR, but also, IPS, and they say it's not a PLS monitor, or keep refusing to admit it, and they even refuse to keep answering that question at all. I really need to know if they can cover it or not, or if they are being really difficult. This is just absolute madness. On top of that, they said it absolutely has sRGB 100% out of the box, using true color, and they are delaying and delaying. I know how to calibrate screens, but if I tamper, they may try to void my warranty, because they suspected of me trying to OC my computer, which I wasn't, since I was asking where the Turbo boost setting is in dragon center. They told me to prove the OC, and I showed them under Intel XTU that as the MSI guy told me on sale date that it's unbinned x6, or 600mhz x FSB-0.950mhz per core. They tried to accuse me of voiding my warranty because I overclocked, but I never clicked the apply button, and I have not overclocked my system, I want it to stay under warranty, but the fact that they were coming up with nefarious ways to void my warranty was fradulent, imho, after they said okay please show us at MSI JP support/ service center.

I'd really appreciate if u could take a look at some of my earlier posts, these are my very first on this forum and am looking for some real help. Is not abt the money, social status, or race. It's supposed to be a support service for warranty, globally, at least one year. Amongst other things. What do you think I can do to get the continuity of service here in Japan, which was so great in the US. I mean, how can they refuse to tell me it's not a PLS panel, and say it's IPS level, I really would like to make sure they can fix it, if it were to ever come to that. Or if this is some marketing stunt by MSI Japan, to screw an half American over for using subpar Jaoanese, because full blooded's sounding oike their better than me. Just a blatant disregard for all human respect, time, and productivity wasted, by them not clarifying after many attempts to ask them whether, not only the global warranty is real, but also, whether they would cover a problem under warranty, if i brought it out of Japan even once. I feep racial disparity, and I speak perfect native Japanese, this guy sounds all high and mighty, and when my wife calls, whom is full blooded Jaoanese, obviously a native speaker as well, they move extremely fast? I'onno what's going on, and it's causing me productivity. Do you guys have these problems with information disparity. And blatant lying? Or complete disonformation by MSI-support any country?

i feel sorry what happened to u, i'd recommend return it for full refund and grab another one, or different laptop all together. lots of enthusiast probably at one point in our lives, realized these incompetent support person or service rep are useless and just decided to learn everything ourselves, as much as possible do everything ourselves, even after spending thousands of dollars.

Donno if you're aware but 99.999% sales rep out there don't know much of what they sell, especially true when it comes to #1 electronics, #2 any big corporations. majority of these technicians including support, only know what they are trained with, which is to follow certain guidelines. When rare situation comes up and requires them to be more detailed, they usually don't know what to do. MSI simply take the info from intel and given it to their clients.

6820HK is unlocked, 6920HQ is locked at 40 multiplier, some of the info can be taken off from intel's website. so essentially you can clock both CPU at 4 Ghz but 6920HQ might be better binned, or simply another way of intel's trick to suck in buyers who doesn't wish to know or spend time to understand overclocking and just choose to run everything at default. btw, 44x is pretty high for a soldered CPU, donno if you'll ever be able to hit that with a decent temperature and stability.

What clocks u guys getting? I overclock the crap out of most my systems, but I do understand that the 6920hq offers 6 extra bins. Is this covered, I havent't touched it yet, the support staff did almost frame me tho, by asking me to prove to them it can clock/multiply higher than 3.58ghz. I do get 3.58 with no thermal throttling, cooler than my gt73vr, on 4 cores. Im guessing the 3.6ghz is multiplied by the 99.500 mhz fsb for a total of 3.58ghz. I like it more than my asus gx800 and clevo p870km/p870dm SLI's, this keyboard is amazing. What else is there to replace with?

Like I was saying, I know the system can go x44 single core then x42, x41, and x40 on all four cores. Question is whether it'll still be covered after I was promised 4.0ghz or better than 6820hk upon purchase. Or better yet, if it'll be covered by MSI if I go 3.97ghz on all four cores, which I know it most certainly can. Obviously going 4.4ghz soldiered is not wise, I don't even want to touch the xtu settings untio I can officially get cleared. There is the acer x21 KL which I have on order, but it's not MXM. Extremely disappointing. Which brings me to my main point, of whether there is a better option of SLI laptops with some upgradability than gt83vr, than what I listed. Including my rog asus gx800 which is a nightmare for mobile performance plus VR, since I require my ridiculous dock, for true performance, or the Clevo's I own both SLI variants of, however the p870dm needs to be undervolted, has a delid and 4.5ghz gurantee, the KL model 870km runs stupid hot, and I prolly havent been using it was much as my skylake model, what else is there? I have the gt83vr KL edition on preorder from the same place i bought my current gt83vr from but it has RGB keyboard and worse siwitches imho. My company does build BTO's, from sager and clevo, including MSI's Fangbook 83vr variant, but it just doesn't look as good. Is there anything else out there, computer parts are cheap, so cash/metal is a non issue. Any recommendations? Has to be at least 1080sli, and hopefully upgradable. Ya ya, desktop is better at everything else, I have a ton of the newest ones of those as well. Mobility on some level has to be a stipulation. I have always looked at laptops on the cusping edge of tech, and is an extreme passion of mine. So I require it, not because I need it, but because I want it. Just not woth atrocious half assed customer service.

The only upgradeable laptops are the MSI GT lineup, the MSI GT62 barebones that Eurocom and HID sell, and the Clevo P775/870 series. Everything else is fully soldered. Of these, only the P870 and GT83 have 1080 SLI. In any case, I believe you listed all the 1080 SLI laptops. BTW, the 7700K runs hot in the P870 due in part to slightly different dimensions. If you fix it with a shim and delid, it runs a lot cooler, especially if you go full liquid metal.

I think that term "upgradeable" is a bit of a stretch these days. None of the makers are providing an upgrade path, even MSI has stopped doing it after the GT72/GT80 Maxwell models.

Replaceable is a more accurate description. If a GPU dies, you should be able to get a replacement to drop in to fix the laptop.

As far as new MXM GPU Upgrades, there isn't a clear view toward anything like that moving forward.

That's true, but he specifically asked about upgradeable. As far as bets go, the P870 series is probably a higher chance than the GT83 at least for Pascal 2.0 since Clevo seems to only want to invest in one MXM design moving forward, but there's basically no guarantee, especially once HBM happens.

Considering Clevo already missed the last opportunity for Maxwell to Pascal upgrades, purposely misfitting the form factor just to thwart owners from buying MXM GPU's to use for upgrades of their P870DM1's, I wouldn't expect Clevo to do anything different this next time around.

The other problem is without maker support providing BIOS / vbios matching upgrades for previous models, it's not for everyone - most owners won't want to risk upgrades without knowing it's support - their warranty's most likey still in effect.

Rather than upgradeable, I'd call it "hackable" ;)

From my understanding, the new format is to account for the fact that the traces for GDDR5X need to be very short due to the high clock speeds. Of course, people are free to interpret their actions however they want, so in the end, it mostly comes down to getting the laptop that suits your needs for the present, and if it happens to be upgradeable, that'll be a nice little bonus in the future.

It could have been altered to fit, the mounting could have been matched, the existing heatplate/pipe's may have needed replacement, but I don't think any effort was put in to making an upgrade available.

Eurocom, a distributor, is the only group to put effort into putting out an upgrade, and that was using an MSI 1070 MXM card, with an MSI 1080 MXM rumored to arrive later - has anyone seen that upgrade kit yet for the P870DM1? ( @Eurocom Support ?) Eurocom has put a 1080 out for their F5 based on the MSI 16L13.

If Eurocom and MSI found a way to fit the P870DM1, Clevo sure could have :)

I'm sure there's some way they could have fit a single 1080 in a P870DM if they had a similar layout to their 980, but that could run into problems further down the road due to larger silicon area for HBM or something else. It would also force the extra card width to be on the left since the die position would have to be the same, which might interfere with other models since they also used the same format for all of their MXM notebooks. With the die shifted towards the center of the card, you get the maximum room to rotate the mounting by 45 degrees if necessary.

U can go plus 6 bins or plus 600mhz per cpu turbo for 4.4ghz 1st core, 4.2 2nd. 4.1 3rd, and 4.0 ghz on all four cores at least. In fact according to intel, this 6920hq chip, is guranteed to hit x36 or 3.6ghz, whereas I've had 6820hk's that could not hit over 200mhz with plenty of rook to spare. MSI US is leniant on these things., but MSI Japan has tried to frame me by telling me to prove to them that it can go over 6 bins, and then tried to void my warranty, but I dodn't hit no apply button. So it's 3.6ghz for now, and it's a travesty, MSI JP has the most atrociois support I have ever seen, but this laptop is so damned good, I'm lost. Stuff I've bought all over the world from MSI, rspecially the US jas excellent support. But I am able to see through the crap of what is MSI JP, my MSI laptops from the rest of the world are great as is my gt83vr, along with gt80 titan sli, etc etc. But I boight the gt83 in japan since I live here now. I have the asus gx800 with the dumb ass cooling dock, but it requires it for any decent performance, especially in non VR SLI. And both the p870dm and p870km sli 1080 models, with tue predator x21 on preorder. The mSI is an exceolent product this far, but just atrocious service here. Any suggestions on an alternative and ya ya, for desktopaphiles I have many of those as well with top notch components. Money is not an object. I just have always belived these specialist, one off so to speak laptops have been on the cusping edge of technology, this my facination with them. Asus can't be upgraded. Full BGA. Cpu and Gpu, my preordered Acer with the 2560x1080 beautiful screen is all BGA, which is disappointing, but good thing computers are cheap. Though the MSI does have the MXM design and I can get new cards because I own a laptop BTO company, IE MSI/Fangbook, but it doesn't look as good even with same specs. Yes, my 870dm and km are both Cpu and GPU upgradable, but I have a delid on my 6700k, and use it more than my newer kaby lake, because the KL model runs soooo hot. What other suggeetions u guys have? It has to be SLI, andbefore u teoo me., me and my wife own asus/Dell/MSI/etc lightweight laptops with gtx 1060-1070, and my wife got her razer with a gtx 1080. But i think it's a total CPU bottleneck. Any other suggestions?

can you refund your laptop / return it and order it again from HIDevolution?

Like you, I had horrible support but from MSI USA. I told them that my GT73VR Titan Pro 7RF with the 120hz panel has no GSYNC but other users and all reviews online show that it DOES have GSYNC. Their reply was we do not advertise it as GSYNC on our screen so it's not GSYNC! Even I gave them the screen model number and they refused to support me to get GSYNC to show/work

Then I tried flashing the same BIOS over again thinking it might bring GSYNC and the laptop got bricked. i reported this to HIDevolution and within 4 hours I had the FedEx guy at my door to collect the laptop from Dubai and send it back to the USA. They are now sending me a new replacement laptop after having tested GSYNC is there and actually working. The benfit of buying such awesome laptops from a reputable reseller is that they have your back and have their connections better than dealing with MSI or any other company like ASUS, we know how horrible the ASUS Customer service is.

HIDevolution has a global warranty option which covers shipping costs both ways should anything go wrong with your laptop

It's great to see HID standing behind that laptop and making sure to fix the issue promptly. I'll keep them in mind for my next purchase.

HIDevolution is AMAZING. With people like @Ted@HIDevolution @Donald@HIDevolution @Zoltan@HIDevolution and @thattechgirl_viv bending over backwards to do things right, I am always pleased with how things are handled.

Notebooks will only draw what the BIOS/EC allows them to, or as much as they need if not artificially crippled and restricted by silly power cap limits. So, yeah... totally safe. The AC adapter doesn't output more than the power demand.

What would also be cool is if Eurocom releases a dual-laptop power cable, with two power leads, where one could power two single-GPU notebooks from this single 780W AC adapter at the same time.

It won't really do anything for you either. The 1080 GT73VR won't overdraw a 330W.

Can an owner let me know, does the GT83VR have a MUX switch?

    Thanks.

I think it has downright disabled iGPU. Only the original GT80 had a MUX.

I tend to agree with you. I've had xotic PC computers in the past. My company deals with insuring laptops, and bringing overclocked, and warranted BTO "whitebook," and various other Clevo variants, that can thermally support it. But of course, there is a aesthetically pleasing factor when considering the MSI vs my very own computers, from Fangbook. Even though they are the same exact internal specs. My MSI seems to stay cooler, even if I go with a -0.055 undervolt with a 7820hk/ 7820hk CPU at the same clock speeds. The desktop chips really need a decent undervolt to achieve higher clock speeds under stable temps on model variants of the Clevo SLI models. But like I said, I tend to use my DM1 more than my KM1, as weird as that sounds. May be because I have my Clevo DM1 with a 1440p 120hz monitor vs the 4k 60hz monitor on my newer model.

everyone make decision off from their experience and knowledge, im the same, so i'll respect your decision however i'd like to share something with you.

reseller sell these notebooks i guess they are called reseller for a reason. if model doesn't change, internal heatsink will be the same, fan will very likely to be the same as well. only real factor come down to which is cooler is the quality of cpu and it's silicone. fact is, it is wrong to say "from my experience, this or that one is cooler" as ultimately its based off internal hardware. if you get a better cpu capable of running same clock at lower voltage of the same cpu model, chances are it'll run cooler, given that with better cpu quality you can undervolt it more etc.

another note is, desktop chip doesn't need to undervolt much to run cooler, most desktop chips are defaulted at a much higher frequency than mobile chip @Papusan , take a mobile chip and desktop chip run them at a high clock speed around 4ghz or higher, almost 99.9999% of the time you'll get mobile chip running hotter and needs to be undervolted, or instances most mobile chip over 4ghz needs overvolt to run stable, these are facts.

i highly recommend @Phoenix suggestion to return for refund and rid of that hassle for yourself and get from a reputable reseller, they are excellent to deal with rather than big coporation.

I agree with everything you say, MSI is relatively new to Japan, so they have to real proven track record. When I meant either one is cooler than the other, and from my experience, I meant it in the colloquial sense but I tend to agree with every last word that you're saying. Which does bring me to the age old question of, go with a direct MSI seller, as I have mistakenly done, find a reseller, as I have done in the past many many times, and have been happy with my decisions, or to go with a big corporation, which is a case by case scenario.

In the states, a smaller corporation/ company will take better individual care of customers, but a larger corporation has disposable income, so here in Japan if there is trouble with a sale from a large corporation, it is easy to just return the product, even if there is some small misprint in the information from date of purchase, though you defiantly get what you payed for. Then on the other side of the coin, you go with a small company and they don't have the funds to individually take returns on every little computer. Is a catch 22. lol

What are you looking for? All I can really think of would be clevo, not many contenders in this bracket.

@SagerFanatic did you have a question for striker? I think he is still down for a bit. I might be able to help.

I think only Clevo, and the Asus GX800, maybe the Acer Predator 21, are the only ones with SLI 1080s Though the predator costs an arm and a leg, in comparison.
