Unreal. Received my gt83vr and it's DOA. Neweggbusiness is getting a call in the AM. So pissed. MSI support was no help. Had me do a battery reset twice. Tried diff outlets and all that. No works. Power button lights up red keyboard lights up red and then nothing. Just stays lit and no hdd lights nothing on the screen. Nothing at all.

Anyone else had one like this. For a 5k laptop I expect it to boot at least once.

    @NuclearLizard
You asked me something about over clocking, but I can't find that section of the thread. So I don't know how to answer the question you asked. I happen to see it in a feed

It was actually something about time spy and 3d mark not working. But we fixed it...it was a drivers issue

DOA can happen to any device, no matter the price or the care taken during build, testing, QA, shipping, and receiving.

It's a combination of physical jarring, component weaknesses, and a bit of luck - infant mortality for individual components play a role in such DOA failures.

It's sad, but it's best to pick yourself up quickly, make a call to the seller and ask for a return - hopefully with a cross-shipment agreement to reduce delay in getting you a working system - you ship and they ship at the same time.

You will likely need to assure the vendor by using a credit card hold on the funds for the 2nd system until the 1st system is received and verified by the seller.

It's best to not pull it apart and try to fix it on your own, it's tempting but only delay's the inevitable.

You could also RMA to MSI for repair, but it will take longer than a simple return / swap.

If the seller doesn't have any other units in stock, return for refund and find another source. These high end units are scarce, it's best to find one while you can rather than wait for another delivery to your current vendor.

Good luck on the 2nd laptop, and please come back and let us know how it works out :)

Thanks for the reply. Quick question. If I'm going to return this unit and you were in my shoes would you pick up something else instead? Just curious.

No. And the chances of getting a DOA again are lower after the first one. A DOA item can happen with virtually everything. Ideally, you could ask a reseller to test before shipping if that would give you a peace of mind, but newegg doesn't do that.

Neweggbusiness kind of sucks. They wouldn't cross ship so had to refund reorder. Crazy how much hassle I had to get them to do it too. New unit just arrived. Fingers crossed

A friend of mine had a bad experience with Newegg, I had shipping problems with them now you seem to be having a problem as well. I think they are slipping. Good luck with your next one.

No, I wouldn't give up that quickly, I'd swap till I had a "good" unit, then put it through it's paces to get a good idea if it will work for me.

What else would you want to get? :)

The only other air-cooled option right now is the Clevo, and it's a bit rough around the edges still - noisy, loud fans, poor heatsinks, and will take a lot of hands on tweaking to get it optimally set up. Then you have to make sure to get the Prema partner version so you can get the tuned BIOS/vbios. It's something I would have fun with, but most gamers wouldn't want to invest the time and effort needed to get it to 100% function.

The other option is the Asus GX800, water-cooled on the dock and air-cooled off the dock. For me this is a good option, I like my laptop to be quiet and the water-cooling is much quieter than the air-cooled only dual 1080 laptops.

But, I don't think the GX800 is shipping yet...

Any other's you are looking at?

Yea....that's why I declined to jump on the gt83 with the 6820hk through new egg. Out of 10 purchases with them I have only had 3 be hassle free.....and 2 didn't even make it to my door.....

Gonna have to wait a bit longer on my project..my routes got switched around at work so my local computer store isn't so local anymore. Lol

A little help here please. I traded in my GT80 for the GT83VR (it's not here yet).

According to the communications, I'm going to get this SSD "256GBSSD(PCIE Gen3x4)".

According to the specs, the system is capable of this:

    SSD
    1x M.2 SSD (SATA)
    2x M.2 SSD Combo (NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4 / SATA)

I'd like to have another SSD ready to add in as my "games" drive when it arrives, but want to make sure whatever I get is compatible. Anyone have any recommendations? I'd like a 1TB SSD, but am open to suggestions.

Also, I don't need the latest and greatest.

Would something like this work in the 1x M.2 SSD (SATA) slot:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147567

Is there really a need to go with a NVMe PCIe SSD for games storage?

    Thanks!

I find its nice to have but not strictly necessary. I find its a lot less jarring than going from mechanical to ssd.

Yeah, that's kind of what I thought since I'm not using it for anything that really needs fast R/W throughput.

Anyone know what length of M.2 the GT83VR will accommodate? I don't see it anywhere.

I'm not sure but I'll be in there a little later so I can grab a model number and look it up.

Not 100% sure what the model number is but I snagged a picture of them. [IMG]

Im having a little trouble getting it to see the drive as a bootable drive, it only gives me intel raid manager as an option.

Edit: I got it to use the ssd as the boot drive.....buuuuuuuuut my NVME drives have disappeared.

for gaming you dont really need nvme pcie ssds. tbh NVMe PCIe ssd is for a niche portion of market but becaues it isnt super expensive its available to consumers.

if you do a lot of video/audio/photo editing, have large ramdisks, want quickest response and snappiness or run vmware and bunch of things in parallel then a good NVMe PCIe SSD would out shine traditional SSD by quite a bit, though difference won't be as much from HDD to 2.5" SATA SSDs.

Well...You could always do this... Get it installed on your sata drive first. Install the nvme driver and reboot. Then run a cloning software to clone the drive to the nvme drive. Shut down and remove sata drive and boot from nvme drive and never look back.

That would be a nice drive to have, but should it go bad you don't have a backup.....Could be all bad.

currently i have the stock setup. back to the 1tb mechanical....doing nothing lol.

i tried to get it to boot to the 2.5 inch ssd, it would either not see it or it would see only the 2.5 i fiddled around for hours trying to get it to hgo...though i vaugly recall someone on the gt80 thread saying they had to pull the nvme drives setup the sata and then add them in. as of now and the way msi sets it up everythings on the nvme raid with a backup targeted to go onto the HDD.

i also learned in my tinkering, yes both bricks have to be plugged in to charge.
i can OC my screen to 100htz.

Hummm, sounds like you have been putting in some time on this project.

Well....You can make an image fro your raid to a drive attached to your usb or type c port.
Then disconnect the nvme and all other drives not needed for the restore. Use a usb version of what ever backup and restore software you have or just use the samsung cloning software from with in windows. Either way should get the image (Or clone) off the drive and ready to be place on a new drive. Macrium is a nice little program because it sees nvme and raid drives.
    http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
I think the free version should be able to do what your trying to do.
That along with what you already know, may help you to complete this the next time you try... :) Maybe.

Nice on the over clock! that is good to know news.

Thanks, I'll have to give it a try when I decide to go at it again.

It seems like it prefers to boot off the raid array from bios.

I'm hoping I can just nuke it and build it from the ground up. The only way to get rid of those pesky bloatwares!

    No problem
You can surely nuke the raid and windows 10 will install right on it, but I don't know if your MSI has a restore partition on it?
And you can set that to ahci and pick the correct boot drive....Speculation because I haven't taken a look at an MSI bios in a while.

yea, i set it to ahci and i couldnt see the raid at all even after i got windows set up on the desktop enviroment, it would only see the 2.5 and when i went back into Bios to switch to raid again it would load only from the raid drives.

nope, I wanted to preserve it as the games drive. lol

Do you know if closing the lid will cause the gt83 any grief with thermals? I got a few games that wont play nice with multiple screens and I was hoping to find a fast way of turning off the internal screen without messing around through menus.

Isn't there a key combo using the function keys?
Should look like dual screens on one of the F keys. Not sure which one though.

So I have he new unit but had to head out of town for work and didn't get time to play anything. I do have to say I'm not really a fan of the screen. Why isn't it a higher res/refresh capable panel?!?!? Can it be swapped out?

The only other panel on the market atm if I recall is the Asus GX800's which is exclusive to them. And there are Alienware panels floating around from their defunct 18 inch model, though I think they are TN and lvds, if I recall right which is no longer supported. You can try OC'ing your panel for extra frames I got mine to 100 htz with no issue.

1080p display on this laptop is such a joke. It is the same as a 2 year old model. Put a 4k on it and I buy it today. Do you guys think there will be a refreshed one with 4K soon? I need a laptop and I might get Asus GX800 if MSI doesn't update the display. (Although I like the MSI one better for everything but the display)

I'd like to see a newer display on this thing too, and one of those 700w power supplies being talked about in the clevo thread.

Not too sure about the 4k panel the only manufacturer that makes them has been locked into Asus exclusivity.

Personally I hook mine up to an x34 to run at the desk and use the 1080 as a secondary and travel display.

If I had to make a wish list it would be 1440p 100+htz 4ms response.

isnt that kind of display way overkill? gaming is one thing but average usage u'd have to adjust text/icon size would be pretty annoying, especially browser settings too.

i leave everything at 900p ha

Which display the x34 or 1440p in general? Lol

I like it and I quite find it to be the best for multi use, I do a lot of word processing, gaming movies etc.

I haven't really had to adjust much other than Windows trying to use extra large icons and large text when I want normal and small icons. Lol

GT73VR has the 4K, I hope they can get that panel of GX800 into GT83VR as well. We should at least have the option, if someone prefers 1080p they are free. But even a single GTX1070 is overkill for that resolution, let alone double GTX1080. And external monitor kind of kills the purpose of a laptop for me. Other than the resolution, I found the panel not bright and subpar sadly.

I didn't know about that single brick, which is my number 2 biggest concern. I even thought about DIYing a custom single one, lol. I hope that one comes along too. Thanks for letting us know about it.

There aren't many excellent choices of 4K panels out there thus why many users don't have good impression with it.

It looks like a good balance between storage space and speed. I, myself, however, would try to fit the 15mm 5TB HDDs just to max it out.

Unless the GT83VR has changed the clearance height of the 2.5" bay it won't fit a 15mm.

    I tried a 15mm 2GB in a GT80 and it wouldn't fit - too tall.

The gt83 is 9.5mm thick at the 2.5 inch Bay and whichever the BD slim standard is. 9.5 as well I think.

yep, 15mm would be lovely, or bunch of 7mm 2.5" sata would do. if its 15mm i'd prefer SAS lol but no chance on this low end mobile chipset.

Not that I know of unfortunately. I'll try fiddling around with it when I get home. It's a bit wonky with it being a hybrid device.

Just got this in the mail and it has been nothing but problems. First my Oculus Rift does NOT work with the HDMI port, it needs to be plugged into the mini DP with an adaptor, not sure if its the laptop or what but it worked fine on the 980M msi laptop. Second is the wifi, its crippling slow and often disappears from the device manager and bios. Third is the USB ports and my wireless mouse, i have tried several different wireless devices and all lag like hell and often dont work. I still have my old 980m laptop and everything works perfectly on it. I have updated ALL drivers to the most recent and attempted every trouble shooting guide I could find. Lastly, it randomly decides that it does not want to post to bios or boot to windows. OMFG...... Seems I got a lemon, and also, the "Warranty Void" sticker covers one of the screws to the HDD cover and it was already broken. Either it was placed in the wrong place or MSI wont allow HDD swapping??

This is some serious ******** for a laptop that costs well over $5,000 USD Gonna talk to MSI when they reopen and see what happens.

Seems you might have a lemon. Keep testing at it and see. Where abouts do you live? Judging by the figure you used I would say in NA probably the states. You can swap around your HDD'S as if I recall there are laws against them saying you can't.

Yes, im driving distance from MSI in Los Angeles. Ive been in contact with a rep there and he has already talked about swapping it out. And links or input to the laws saying they cant prevent or void warranty for swapping the HDD out? I have a samsung 2TB SSD I want in there instead of 1tb mechanical

I'll try to dig one up, I have seen if floating through the gt80(s) thread and an ask msi, I also called msi Canada to pester them. Lol

Though be sure to ask them when you swap it as someone getting told yes in a different part of the world might not do you much good.

Also damn that must have run you some big bucks that ssd is almost 800 up here. Lol
