You can always put the application on the die, then use the outlines of the impression it leaves to put it on the heatsink.

So what is the best thermal compound that is safe for me to have a reseller put in the laptop?

The stock thermal compound seems to test very well in my experience but if I was to replace it with a non-conductive material it would be probably Antec F7 or ICD or GELID they all seem to perform pretty similar.

Is a conductive compound worth the risk if I have a reseller apply it?

I have seen accounts online of resellers like gentech not applying thermal pastes... How will I be able to tell that they replaced the stock paste and applied it to both the heatsink AND cpu/gpu?

That really just depends on the relationship you have with your reseller and their experience with it. If they have never used it its a clear NO. I don't have a local reseller relationship and I am just to picky to trust anyone else, that's just the type of person I am.

With the MSI fan control out now temps are even more manageable so its not as necessary to use unless you want to be done with reapplications.

I most cases after time typical non-conductive thermal compounds dry out and loose performance, CLU doesn't do this in my experience. Others have reported the same even with extreme overclocking that will kill typical thermal compounds after time.

Any quality TC is good as long as it's properly applied.

The factory TC is very good but in my experience there's too much on the chips and heatsink.

Very little is needed for proper cooling.

It's only needed to replace any air that is trapped in the machine marks, uneven surfaces and the pores of the metal.

Air is a very poor conductor of heat.

I use the surface spread method for all my TC applications.

The more metal to metal contact between the chip and the heatsink the better the heat transfer thus the better the cooling.

So people lap the surfaces to get the most metal to metal contact as possible;almost eliminating the need for TC.

Skylake is starting to roll out today with 2 desktop CPUs

The Core i7-6700K and Core i5-6600K are the first from Intel's sixth-generation Core processor family, codenamed Skylake, and they're targeted squarely at performance enthusiasts. The two desktop chips are clocked at 4GHz and 3.5GHz, respectively, across four cores.

"The inaugurating pair of Skylake processors won't be alone in Intel's K class of unlocked, overclocking-ready chips, and the company is promising to even deliver one for notebooks later in the year."

Hi just wondering if anyone else here has experienced this. Basically I upgraded my laptop to windows 10 and all drivers are up to date. When I open up the graphics settings in assassins creed black flag the physics settings are not there before upgrading I had it set to low. Also in arkham knight the advanced smoke and advanced debris settings are greyed out its a lil weird coz I had both settings switched on pre upgrade. I'm quite new to this as its my first gaming laptop that I got in late may. It's the 980m sli with 16gb of ram that I'm using
Thanks in advance any help would be appreciated ;)

    7-4980HQ vs i7-5950HQ

I'm about to buy the MSI GT80 Titan SLI and there are quite a few models out there, one with the i7-4980HQ and the other with the i7-5950HQ they have both the same SLI GTX 980m graphics card but which of the CPU should I choose? They have the same price as well but I wonder really what would be the difference. I did make a research but I want to know more.

The 4980hq is a 4th gen Intel CPU (Haswell) and the 5950hq is the 5th gen Intel CPU (Broadwell) , as you can see the 5th gen is newer. In performance they seem to be very close and a toss up between machine, environment & operator. You can check out the GT80 test and tune thread to see testing from each machine to help you with your decision. From my gathering it does seem the 5950hq has better physics capability but overall they are still close and you can't go wrong with either. If they are the same price always go with the latest tech 5950hq if no real issues have been found and in this case there is none.

Post up some numbers once yours arrives.

Made a really stupid mistake and upgraded to Windows 10 and my eyes are killing me! Even as soon as I booted this laptop on Windows 8.1 before updating the nVidia drivers it was fuzzy, as soon as I updated the nVidia drivers it was nice and crisp.

Is there a fix for this that actually works with windows 10? Or if not what's the easiest/best way to factory reset back to Windows 8.1

What exactly is the problem? Are you not running at your native resolution, or is windows 10 using a difference DPI scale?

Also, you might want to check, but I read you only have one month to decide if you want Windows 10 or not. After that, if you are using windows 10, your license will remain now as a win10 license, and no more 8.1 for you.

Can't say exactly what the problem is, it's like when you get a new monitor and use the default drivers before installing the video card and/or monitor drivers and text appears blurry/fuzzy. It actually looked that way as soon as I booted this for the first time but once I updated the nvidia drivers it looked good. Then I upgraded to windows 10 and the problem came back. Tried clean installing drivers, tried changing the DPI scaling from within Windows 10 settings and also using the "fix" on the internet, didn't seem to help much.

I already reverted back to Windows 8.1 and it looks better, I think. I can't tell exactly because my eyes are getting a little weak to begin with. I didn't realize this laptop doesn't come with a recovery partition pre-installed, didn't make a recovery image when it prompts you when you first turn it on.

So right now I'm reverted back to Windows 8.1, everything seems fine, but I'd much rather start over completely with a recovery image/ISO of the stock settings. (

have you tried changing the Font size to normal or smaller? When i reinstalled 8.1 and did a fresh 10 install. The font was on large or something like that. and had everything fuzzy to me.
    Just a thought ??

I was looking at cases and I noticed a lot of reviews on the everki complained the shoulder strap clips break easily. I am also looking at the case logic and the Dell Vindicator brief cases.
Does anyone have any experiences with any of these cases?
Is the vindicator case too big, heavy, or spacious (it weighs like 4 lbs but has metal clips and the laptop compartment is like 19 inches long)?

Hi again guys! I want to format my gt80 titan. What is the best course of doing so? Is there a way to go back and revert/reformat your laptop from Day 1? Or I have to manually format and install windows 8? Thanks!

EDIT: sorry it's my first time owning a laptop

Use the MSI recovery software to create a set of backup disks (or USB) and then you can restore it if you need to.

That only lets you restore to a restore point doesn't it? Not to a completely fresh install, which I can no longer do because I didn't do it when I first started using the computer

mason2smart, the Titan comes with a very nice backpack:

If you are looking for a step up in 18" backpacks, the Oakley Kitchen Sink is still being made, I used it for my 18" Asus W90VP-X1.

There are color choices besides black now too: Stealth Black, and Dark Red.

    Kitchen Sink SKU: 92060A-001 $200.00

Actually I was looking for a briefcase with which to carry the laptop rather than a backpack as I will need a backpack for all my school stuff.

Oakley Kitchen Sink: several reviews say it doesn't hold 18 inch laptop.

Edit: But there are a couple other briefcases mentioned on Amazon that don't have the Alienware logos on them.

mason2smart, that's a lot of weight to be carrying... full carry school/work bag + GT80 bag = Too much stuff.

Whenever I carry my usually heavy laptop, I cut down on everything else, so I leave stuff in the car / locker / desk, so I can have a single carry with a hand/arm free. I keep a spare power adapter, keyboard, mouse, etc at work.

I tried the 2 bag carry for a while, but ended up finding a single carry bag that made it easier to maneuver while walking, you need to keep a hand free. It's a bit gawky carrying 2 heavy bags around everywhere.

The Everki's wear well, but the Titan is too large, I created a carry monster with it, you keep adding stuff, and it just keeps expanding, even with the straps :)

porky133, the Oakley Kitchen Sink carried my 18.4" Asus W90vp-X1 + 17" Macbook Pro just fine for many years, along with a number of other 17" laptops. The only laptops that fit in the fitted area are the thin ones, but the large middle area is perfect for the 18.4" laptops and thick 17" gaming laptops.

I put the 17" Macbook Pro laptop in the fitted area, and the 18.4" laptop in the middle area. Both laptops at the same time, and carried it that way. Works great.

When I just wanted to carry the 18.4" laptop, I used the fitted area for books/binders. There are lots of other compartments for stuff, like the power adapter, keyboard, mouse, shoes, jacket, etc, along with a fitted water protection cover stored in the bottom.

If you are unsure about a backpack, it's always good to go to the store with your laptop and try it in the bag you are thinking of getting first, that way you can be sure it will fit. That's what I did when I got the Kitchen Sink - I had already tried a bunch of other backpacks.

Oakley has stores around the world:
    http://uk.oakley.com/en/store-finder

I dug my old Oakley Kitchen Sink backpack out of mothballs, it's been disused for a while now - I got it in 2009 so it shows some wear, and I put my GT80-263 in it for a couple of poses.

First view, open to show the headroom/fit, and then closed to show it doesn't stretch the bag, the bag maintains shape.

Kitchen Sink with GT80-263 open view.jpg

Kitchen Sink with GT80-263 closed view.jpg

The GT80-263 in the bag feels much lighter than the W90VP-X1 felt... yup, 11.46 lbs. for the W90 and only 9.9 lbs. for the GT80 :)

I currently fill an entire xxl Adidas backpack to the point where the straps break several times each year (I love their lifetime warranty :D) with binders and textbooks... So I'm not sure I could fit a titan in the everki or Oakley with all my stuff (legal notepad, a 2' binder, a 1' binder, a 1.5' binder, and a moderately sized textbook). I don't drive yet (in high school) and my campus is so small I only have 4 minutes between classes so I have little time to get to my locker...

I currently carry my razer blade pro in a separate samsonite case...

mason2smart, which Adidas backpack?, they have lots of great looking backpacks :)

    adidas Climacool Speed Backpack
    http://www.amazon.com/adidas-513305...9-8479665?ie=UTF8&refRID=0TDMK5CAGKZ5099NF9QN

From what I remember of the of HS, I would leave that GT80 at home, or lock up the GT80 in a safe place - make friends with the teachers, and find a nice safe place to keep it between classes.

You won't actually take that monster out and try to balance it on a sitting desk?

Besides, that $5k high profile laptop is going to get you the wrong attention, quickly. It's not unusual for adolescents to act out of jealousy... better to find that out with something less expensive. Adults too, BTW.

There are a bunch of 2 in 1 Skylake laptops coming, I would carry one of those to class - much cooler, lighter, practical.

    Hi everyone,

I'm about to order a gt80 in the coming days, just one thing puzzles me.
I'll be traveling to europe soon and I will need a european power cord, compatible with the specific adapter.
I looked around and the heaviest duty cord I could find is at 250V 16A. (eg. http://www.amazon.com/European-Powe...4909&sr=1-15&keywords=European+Power+Cord+16A )

Now the msi adapter has input: 100-240V 4.4A and output: 19.5V 16.9A

Does anyone know if it will be ok? Not sure if in this case I check input (then what I found is more than enough) or output (not enough ampere). I don't wanna risk damaging a new and expensive toy so soon.

    thanks for your help

wow! ok thanks, that's good... I already did this but while under Windows 10 and it didn't have all the options I was looking for, now that I've reverted back to Windows 8.1 there are options there that look more like a complete factory reset

I'm thinking to try doing the reset from the f3 menu, the total reset, creating a restore point when that prompt comes up, and then try installing windows 10 one more time, it looks and feels much cooler other than hurting my eyes from the fuzzyness

The only thing I would worry about is that none of the briefcase type I have found provide enough protection for the GT80... I would consider putting the laptop in the nice padded backpack, and get a baggage bag for the books :)

Someone knocks my computer off the desk they are paying for the repair ;)

Also with the GT80 they probably will struggle to just accidently knock it due to the weight, they would have to pick it up and chuck it lol.

Plus if you register it within 30 days you get 1 years accidental coverage in the US anyway :)

I have a slappa briefcase I will test a gt80 in it. The cons of this brieface is it won't hold much else and the strap is strong but not well padded. I used it to transport an m18x on a couple occasions.
I have blocked delivery offers ms kb for win 10 for now.

It's the input side that matters. Here The amp pull is 4.4 off device is and the cord in question at 16 guage stranded can handdle 16amp much similar to typical nema 5-15 standard in USA.

Eu voltage will be around 230v.

That cord will be capable of feeding the supply since the amp pull of the supply will not exceed cord rating and the line voltage will be within specs of the power supply needs.

Any risk would be to supply itself over laptop and under voltage actually risker of the two heat wise.

This doesn't include lightning and non related electrical risks or connecting to DC currents.

Your output power supply amps are for the DC current supplied to the laptop to explain for the above differnences you list.

Yeah except I do a lot of heavey photoshopping at school and animation... My school doesn't have stolen items issues its only gifted and talented so there's no neighborhood factor. There aren't more than 120 students in my grade.

Is the vindicator bag any good?

mason2smart, it's a lot to carry from class to class all day...

You could be smart, gifted, and talented, and set up your laptop at home as a remote desktop server - access it remotely via a nice light laptop while at school, or anywhere else. :)

I went to the same kind of schools, they aren't exempt from mischief

Actually I once left my razer blade pro ($3k) on a desk for 3 periods and no one took it. :p
The gt80 would just be an upgrade from my current laptop...

mason2smart, the Razer Blade is a thin laptop and looks like a black Macbook, the GT80 looks like something special, and it will stand out among the other laptops.

I can't imagine walking to and from school every day with $5k+ worth of hardware.

    Please be careful :)

mason2smart, all the briefcase type cases like this I have checked out don't offer enough protection, especially for a high mass laptop.

When I swing around my laptop bag with a 10lb+ laptop, with a total load of 40+lb's, it needs to take a hit, and not transmit that force through to the laptop. I just don't see the thin briefcase - like bags providing enough protection.

To me they seem more like slip cases than outer protection coverage. Something you would put into a backpack, not use standalone.

Also, read the reviews, there are several mentions on how it stands out and catches peoples eye, not a good thing - you want to play down the value of stuff you carry around, not get attention.

Again, I would put the books and school stuff in a duffel bag you can carry like a briefcase and put the laptop and valuables in the well protected backpack.

Also, if you do tend to forget things, and leave them behind - I do - make sure your primary carry contains the valuables - you are less likely to get distracted and forget it.

I take the bus :) no walking to school. The vindicator looked thick and seemed to be better quality with metal clasps...

Yes the razer is thin but it also stands out with the green keyboard and crazy touchpad (that never functions properly) and it still weighs close to the gt80 (8 lbs)
