mason2smart, weird, did you try ALT-TAB? Was everything locked up, or just the numpad input?
It is after all Windows, and a PC laptop, you can expect issues with all of them. You can get them to stabilize out once you know their limitations, and what not to install - varys by make/model, but you can't expect them to not be without issues to work through.
If you are sensitive to getting stuck, and have a history of problems with Windows laptops, it's just something you are going to have to get through. Get the expertise for debugging and solving problems, and the issues won't be a show stopper.
And, with that said, don't let problems stop you from moving forward.
You could have called over the Frys' guy, showed him the lockup issue, and let him work on it - and then ask permission to CTRL-ALT-DEL or power cycle it (hold down the power button till it turns off). Then continue playing with the GT80.
It would take more than one event to draw a conclusion as to the root cause, and it is likely fresh out of the box without Windows, drivers, or app updates - so it isn't a good example on which to judge the stability of the GT80. Fry's Internet/Wifi is notoriously slow and they don't update the laptops.
Surprisingly Notepad is known for freezing computers. Saving and Printing mostly.

So far noone has reported major issues with BIOS/apps/etc for the GT80. I am assuming people are updating to the latest available on their model's download support site.
But, I can tell you that from what I have seen in forums, and my own use, the MSI laptop's are a bit sensitive to software release for some of the features - like audio, keyboard, trackpad, etc.
And, it's best to only use the versions in the download areas - and not venture out to OEM sites for newer versions without expecting some kind of feature loss or malfunction.
High-end Laptops are all a bit cranky, and you need to find your way through to getting things updated and configured optimally - that's where these forums and the MSI forums help most![]()

I understand kingston comes as m.2 drives. Im thinking of ordering up two more. Whats reasonable models to consider? Im only looking to do another 120x2 or 240x2 R0 config to shove in with my 32gb of 1866, might as well while im in there.
-
Also... If by any chance you or someone typed FN+F3 I think, or F4, you disable the touchpad, so that could also explain perhaps what happened. I will test tonight but so far, I don't recall having any issues with my touchpad except updating drivers the very first time. I don't think newer models have the same issue with old drivers. -

I was going to go with Samsung ssd (I have a 500gb 840 Evo) as they have been very fast and perform as good as advertised and have over several years had no failures.

I bought the Micron M600 M.2 SATA 512GB here:
http://centralcomputer.com/p-383778-micron-m600-mtfddav512mbf-1an12abyy-512gb-m2280-ssdproduct.aspx
It would be nice to hear others reports of performance for their M.2 upgrades, a CrystalDiskMark result for 500GB tests would be helpful.
The other M.2 SATA drives I have tried (in a G750JH) are the Samsung EVO 850 512GB, and the Crucial MX200 512GB.
I used 3 of each in a 3x RAID0, 2 M.2 and 1 2.5" to get 1600MB/sec + Reads and 1500MB/sec Writes - the MX200 set was more finicky to get in a RAID0 but both brands eventually worked the same. -

With skylake they will pobably be pcie ssd's - I cannot wait for the 4gb/sec read/write speeds!

Crucial is their consumer brand, and the MX200 is similar to the M600. The M600 has write improvements of about 10%.
So far neither Crucial nor Micron brands have had a Samsung Evo 840 like situation. But, there have been firmware issues along the way. No controller recalls, or other failed design mis-steps.
Micron does stuff like this:
Intel/Micron Introduces Revolutionary 3D XPoint Technology: Memory And Storage Combined
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/micron-intel-3d-xpoint-memory,29690.html
Micron may be purchased soon by an overseas firm, and one can hope it doesn't turn into an OCZ like situation:

I liked the Evo 850, but already been there, done that - time to try the elusive Micron M600 - it was very hard to find in stock anywhere...but seems to be in stock now.Last edited: Jul 28, 2015 -
Right now 1.5-2GB/sec are the maximum speeds I have seen for 1 PCIE x4 slot.
Those PCIE x4 SSD's are way expensive as well. You can get a M600 M.2 SATA 512GB for $219, but a XP941 512GB is going for $429 at the same site:
Samsung XP941 MZHPU512HCGL-00004 512GB M.2 PCIE SSD OEM
http://centralcomputer.com/p-249376...2hcgl-00004-512gb-m2-pcie-ssd-oemproduct.aspx
The nice thing about the M.2 SATA, besides being way cheaper, is that the Broadwell chipset can support 4x RAID0, so you can get 4x the size as well as 4x the speed.
The MAX size for a PCIE x4 right now is 512GB, but a 4x M.2 SATA RAID0 will have 2TB running at what I hope is 1.8GB/sec
Unless the Skylake chipset provides for 4x PCIE x4, or the PCIE x4's size goes up from 512GB to 1TB, the 4x M.2 SATA RAID0 will still give a better result in size/speed.
The more I think about it, the more I feel good about staying with the mature HM87 Broadwell GT80 shipping with Windows 8.1 now, and not waiting for the 1st generation Skylake 100-series chipset GT80 shipping with Windows 10 later.
The Broadwell 5950 - 263 model: can run Windows 7/8.x, has 4x M.2 SATA RAID0, stable long tested HM87 chipset, mature drivers and stable Windows apps, CPU performance increase for Broadwell of 20% already 2/3 of rumored Skylake 30% improvement over Haswell - I won't notice the additional 10%, upgradeable GPU's same as Skylake.
Maybe in 12-18 months when Cannonlake 10nm is out, or Skylake chipset's/CPU's have gone through a couple of iterations, that will be a big enough jump in CPU / IO performance to upgrade the frame.Last edited: Jul 28, 2015 -

IIRC from reports the lane count is the same but the 4x lanes from the southbridge are now PCI-E gen 3 rather than 2.
hmscott likes this. -
I assume the USB 3.1 support is independent and doesn't require sacrifice of any PCI lanes that would be used for M.2 PCIE x4 slots?
When the embargo on Skylake info release is over, please let us know if any of the new Skylake mobile laptops have more than 1 PCIE x4 slots -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
What do you mean by PCI-E x4? Gen 1, 2 or 3 speeds?
You must remember PCI-E 4x Gen1 = PCI-E 2x Gen2 = PCI-E 1x Gen3
Going from 4x Gen2 to 4x Gen3 will give twice the amount of bandwidth, 4GB/sec roughly (minus overheads).hmscott likes this. -
Meaker, yes, Gen 3 lanes supporting multiple M.2 PCIE x4 slots, preferably in a RAID0 configuration.
So the newly upgraded Gen 3 lanes in Skylake 100-series can now deliver another PCIE x4 slot? Providing 2 M.2 PCIE x4 slots instead of the single PCIE x4 slot we have seen so far?
And, most importantly, can those multiple M.2 PCIE x4 slots be used as a RAID0 volume?Last edited: Jul 28, 2015 -
Hello all. New owner of the MSI GT80 SLI-263 here (just finished day 1!). I absolutely love this thing and I was hoping I could find a laptop cooling pad that properly fits it. I currently have the Targus cooling pad made for 18" laptops and it works fine...but JUST barely. It fits securely on it and I have no major worries, but I do worry about it a little lol. Dont get me wrong, I have no complaints because the performance and screen size are just mind bogglingly amazing.
But still...hoping I can find an equally enormous laptop cooling pad to support it. -
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834982206
It overhangs the edges about 3/4" on each side but the feet are fully supported. There is no overhang on front and back. -

Mobile workstation was also my intent of purchase ; although I enjoy a round of World of Tanks and simply had to preorder the Doom remake.
So the Xeon/K5100 card options became more expensive with possibly less flexibility.
Mine is hopefully arriving friday, need it badly to replace this dead m18xr2. I ordered the u3 cooler just now also, figured it be good to have for when im cranking multiple virtual machines. Once i max the RAM that is.
I tried my TV idea from a few posts back, it was usueless, very blurry at 1080p. I think I'm going to get multiple ROG Swifts. -
I've installed a single MX200 500gb 2280ss Crucial for games and it works fine. Just over 500 read/write times and loads everything quickly.

Isn't pcie also used to connect to the gpu? Wouldn't that mean connections between cpu and gpu will be faster?
-

The 16 lanes from the cpu are used for that and are currently gen 3 anyway.

Even if you aren't a gamer, it's a good idea to exercise all your components thoroughly when you first get the laptop, to induce any infant mortality failures to happen during the return period.
Occasionally someone doesn't check their GPU(s) due to not being a Gamer, and then they find out months later their GPU is flaky. I have seen several such postings (over the years, not this laptop) asking why their screen goes kafluey when they start a game, months after they purchased their laptop.
The Futuremark.com benchmarks, furmark, Unigine benchmarks, and many others are a good quick way to stress the GPU to make sure it is stable as delivered.
Just thought I would give you a heads up to check everything, putting it through it's paces/limits, before your return period is overLast edited: Jul 28, 2015 -
Hello,
I just got this notebook, lthe SLI-001 version.....question is, i never dealt with Displayport at all.. I plan on buying two Asus-VG248QE-24-Inch-LED-Lit-Monitor, one for vertical, one for normal landscape...
question is, does displayport on this device do 144hz? will i have issue tri-monitor with this laptop? Also, do i need to get a special displayport cable for this cause it looks smaller than the male-end i see on amazon etc. if so, what is the actual port called (like USB Type-A, B, C, etc)
sorry for so many questions, it's just an alien port to me. -

Regular mDP (Mini DisplayPort) to regular DP cable will do. -
Now as soon as I unbox I install heaven and 3dmark and run both benchesm then get onto patching, installs, etc..
Hoping I get to do that successfully on Friday, mine might be shipping today yay!hmscott likes this. -
So guys whats the verdict on windows 10? safe to update? Does anything break due to the update?

Thanks for the commenting on the need to test everything while still under warranty. Any suggestions on was programs to run and where to get them will be appreciated.
For others asking about Windows 10, I'm satisfied with it enough to start using it as my primary OS. There are a number of things I do not like (not being able to pin things to the left side start menu - not the tile area; and the all apps list being so narrow and non-resizable that names of programs with long names are truncated), but all-in-all I can live with it and definitely prefer it to 32-bit Win 7. 64-bit Win 7 would have been OK but updating from 32-bit to 64-bit would have required a total re-installation so I decided it was time for a new machine so might as well do the OS too. If nothing else Win 10 is prettier than Win 7 <grin>.

I bought a MSI GT80 Titan SLI-263 and bought and downloaded GTA V from Steam and I just cannot get it to run. It crashes everytime I try to start the storymode and I am on the verge of returning it. This is strange because I see Youtube videos of people running GTA V on Ultra with the same laptop I have and it's starting to piss me off. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Running from my new GT80-263
The 5850HQ has CPU multiplier settings through XTU for 44x/43x/43x/43x Core, it comes with default 38/37/37/37. CPU Cache defaults to 34x, and can be increased to 40x.
If anyone has the correct core voltage + processor voltage settings to make 44x/43x/43x/43x stable, please let me know - it will save a lot of reboots
Same go for the cache settings, goes up to 40x, but it is unstable without additional tweaks.

Don't be upset at the GT80.
The point of PC gaming is being able to tweak your system in order to run games as smooth as possible.
I learned that with Witcher 3.
Don't expect a game to know your gaming laptop is top tier. That is your job -
If you manage to figure it out please let me know. -

GT72 entry for downloads, select Windows 10
http://us.msi.com/support/nb/GT72-Dominator-Pro-G-GTX-980M-5.html#down-driver
GT72 Windows 10 driver section - drivers for the same hardware as the GT80 should work
http://us.msi.com/support/nb/GT72-Dominator-Pro-G-GTX-980M-5.html#down-driver&Win10 64
GT80 entry for downloads, only Windows 8.1 is available.

You might query MSI support, and ask when they plan to add a Windows 10 section for GT80 downloads...Wess16 likes this. -

The Cooler Master U3 is a great fit for the GT80
It is really is sturdy and firm.
I just got it today and I can say my temps are much cooler.
Normally my CPU temps for moderate online browsing and video streaming mid 50's - 60C
Right now I am a cool 47-48C with High being 52-57C
