how many have used 1866ram in the gt80? I happen to have it laying around and plan on switching it out and maxing it to 32GB.
I dont plan on it being 'noticeable' just more and I need it mostly for one VM I need to be able to run that needs 24gb.

1.35v 1866mhz ram will work guaranteed on Broadwell (5xxx cpu) systems and 99.9% of the time in haswell (4xxx cpu) as intel don't officially support it so don't bin cpus based on that ability.

Thank you pals, but better wait the response from HIDevolution before breaking their seal... Indeed unpowered doesn't work so must be a hardware failure... Thrilled to be asked to send it back to them!

It comes down to if your IMC can handle 2133mhz and it's a little silicon lottery, your chances of winning are good but not guaranteeed. Pick the cheapest sticks from a decent manufacturer.

Thanks Meaker, I will give it a try and report back how it works.

If anyone else has tried, or is trying 2133mhz memory in a Broadwell GT80, please let us know how it works for you.

What was the outcome of this issue?
Are they going to perform the repair for you, or is it going back to MSI RMA?

Just browsed through the MSI GT80 download page and there are a few new updates, Bios, Audio driver, MSI True Color, and Nahimic

    http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GT80-2QE-Titan-SLI.html/#down-bios

I was attempting to update my Bios and I get a message before confirming the Bios update.

    ROM Image is Invalid
    Do you want to proceed?

    Has anyone come across this?

I am running gskill 2133 ram with the Broadwell 5950HQ and it worked for me. Although my titan died shortly after getting it and is currently back at the seller now so I did get to experience it much unfortunately.

Caddyman, sorry to hear about your RMA, please let us know how it works out.

Happy to hear the g.skill 2133mhz works :)

Did you update to the E1812IMS.110 BIOS? There is mention of "Reduce memory detect timing." as the description:

    http://us.msi.com/support/nb/GT80-Titan-SLI-GTX-980M-SLI-5.html#down-bios

Just as I am not sure I want the Firmware Update 1812EMS1.106 with description "Modify Broadwell CPU SW shutdown temperature : 100'C."

    http://us.msi.com/support/nb/GT80-Titan-SLI-GTX-980M-SLI-5.html#down-firmware

I am wondering if I should only update the BIOS to the version before the "Reduce memory detect timing" version to keep support of 2133mhz.

    Thanks Caddyman!

Sorry I was lucky I got to update windows and the video drivers and did not get to the bios updates yet. My titan died with only about 5-10 hours on it.

I'd leave it alone, unless BIOS/EC updates do something Epiphanial for me the brick-age or other annoying factors seem to outweigh the benefits. Maybe I just still have the bad taste from AWare, but anymore I'm happy to get hardware that works as advertised. 2133 worked on gen3 i7s even, I was surprised these dont ship stock with 1866.

There is a high chance it will work, but it is not guaranteed. I am sure majster msi is running his stock ram overclocked to such speed. So it should work.

Any update on this? I'll add the thread has been getting a bit scary with problems from minor to DOA lately.
If I get a lemon I think I'm done with gaming laptops.

Hahahaha, you would faint if you read any owner's thread of any models. Nothing is without lemons, minor or major situations. That is not important, the important thing is that they get fixed so that users can use their laptop as advertised :)

I just asked about it because I noticed it recently. And even then I am not entirely sure what could cause it to flicker or if it depends on something. I haven't seen it do it since a couple of days ago, so I am not sure if it's tied to software somehow, like perhaps steel series engine or something.

You can also get lemons with desktops, which can be more painful because you have to deal with individual warranties/etc depending where you bought your devices haha :D Chill man. If it's something serious, we raise our voices and get support.

In the end the machine comes with warranty and all, so don't sweat it :) I am running one of the first GT80 titans ever and aside from a random flicker light, I have no issues playing games or using it for anything.

Isn't The SLI an overkill for the screen that comes with it?
or do people normally connect it to an external monitor?

Nope it is not overkill, unless you only play old games :) Newer games we are breaking even, and for those of us that overclock the monitor, we can sometimes enjoy higher fps at 1080 res :)

And yeah, people do connect it to external gaming 144hz monitors, triple monitor setups, or even 4K.

Games like witcher 3 do manage max details with no AA in hairworks (enabled), with relatively constant 60fps at 1080p, but at 4K you will struggle to get constant 30fps haha.

Newer games will start pushing the system harder, and with 1080 res we can at least push max details without worrying.

It is not about today, but tomorrow's games, that ensure we can play. Plus the monitor is actually very high quality IPS so that helps :)

I've seen people recommend the 144hz Asus 24 inch, and the Gsync monitors (although I think gsync does not work with triple monitor setup).

I use my 4K Tv as external sometimes, but most of the time I find the 18inch internal monitor to be great for gaming.

This is what I'm holding out for also. I already have a GS70, lightweight for traveling. But my heart yearns for this beast. A friend bought one with SLI970's and loves it. I have two nitpicks from his: 1) the indicator lights are underneath and hard to see 2) With Win8.1 I use a PIN to log on and the numpad isn't available until after he loads windows so he uses the keyboard numbers. Like I said, nitpicking. I still want it.

Those are valid nitpicks, but in the end tradeoffs. I would have prefered a full keyboard and move the touchpad to the dragon logo above it, but then the touchpad would be weird to use haha :)

Yeah the light indicators are easily missable, and I have noticed a tendency for a lot of machines to do that, or ether not include any indications at all. My Lenovo T540P has a power button with a LED that turns on when its on, and thats it. I don't know anything else :D

Why wait for skylake, when you can wait for Pascal? :D :D :D I am just joking here, but if you really are waiting for newer tech, Pascal will be a considerable upgrade compared to CPU upgrades right now. Sure, that means waiting nearly another year.... :p

ryzeki, I was concerned about the weight of the GT80 on a cooler, do you think the GT80 too heavy to be supported by the 2 pegs sticking out at the bottom of these?

Hmm, they really should hold the weight without much issue, though I don't know haha :)

The U3 might feel flimsy because it is just a thin piece of aluminum, but it holds the machine easily.

LOL, I try to limit myself to one $3K laptop every other year. The GS70 this April so I'm at least a year away from another one. Unless of course they make some change to it that I just can't resist!

    I want my Precious!

Edited to add: for a cooler my friends and I are all using Targus X stands. Simple, lightweight, easy to carry, nothing to break on it.

I'm sorry if this has been discussed, but the thread is really long...

Anyway... Does the GT80 Support gsync?
Either officially or with hacked drivers?

    Cheers!

Internally it does not. It does support external gsync monitors.

Only the GT72 Gsync model can play with gsync with the internal monitor. Most likely GT80 will get a gsync variant with a future release, since it already has partially what it takes: Not having Optimus.

Unfortunately this doesn't work on Windows 10. The forced auto update feature of Windows 10 installs a new version of the driver which breaks the number keypad feature.

ryzeki, has someone reported using an external G-sync monitor successfully with the GT80?

Which g-sync monitors have been reported to work with the GT80 using G-sync?
