I am looking to purchase SSDs for this laptop. I was wondering if I would be able to do 4 512GB SSDs and not have them in RAID0 configuration?
I was planning to grab these: Plextor M6e PX-G512M6e M.2 2280 512GB PCI-Express 2.0 x2 Internal Solid State Drive x 4. Would 22 x 80 fit?

So no ones tried the leaked g sync drivers or modding them?

I am incorrect I do not see any documentation at this time about bays 3 & 4 being anything other than Sata 3.Last edited: Feb 10, 2015 -

Also, I don't fully understand the details, but when including the PCI-e M.2 drive in software RAID, you might be giving up some of your PCI-e lanes so the x4 SSD can only operate at x2 speeds, etc. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can explain.GTVEVO likes this. -
The 1tb copasity is what I am holding off for and I will be curious to see the price drop on the existing products once the new is out.
Great link, thx. -

G sync looks very promising to me as I hate stutter and tear

Ya I thought I read this in an article which I now can't find so I may have goofed there but I was thinking that was the case but hopefully someone running more than 2 m.2 ssd's can confirm. Otherwise the 4 m.2 ssds are sata3 and the 2.5 is sata2. I will update once I find some proof here, I apologize for speaking too early here possibly.
I corrected my statement above, don't know why that was in my head.Last edited: Feb 10, 2015 -

Though PCI-e storage has advanced in the desktop arena, not so much for notebooks. Currently we are limited to SATA I/O's @ 6GBs, and we await next-gen PCI-e supporting motherboards, chipsets, and an IRST from Intel. As such, when looking for M.2 SSD's for the GT80, consider the notebook's hardware limitations.

How many sata3 can the gt80 support? I heard the HDD will be sata2 unless you fill up all the m2 slots?

Is there any way to remap the FN key to be the Windows key? It's such an annoyance that I can't use the Windows shortcut keys. Grrrrr..............
-
You can't use the FN key but you can use any other and map it as windows key which is listed under the modifiers list in the steelseries Engine 3 application.

I called xoticpc to ask them if they could throttle it down to your spec and sadly they told me they cant, other thing was I was hoping the swift monitor I already have will it work at 144hz on the Gt80 and I was told again by xoticpc they cant answer that?
So I like to ask what you think be best for me to go with a gt72 or gt80? It's sad that sales or customer support couldnt give me a answer to either of my questions....they just wanted me to go ahead and order the gt80-009 then they can answer my questions? -
The GT80 is the better option to maintain that higher framerate you want and it is definitely compatible with the swift monitor
-
So I'll wait on which they think would be better the 001 or 009.
To help I keep my room around 69 degrees due to my copd, if that helps any.
I also have 2 old but never used, Dell XPS H2Ceramic cooling units if anyone still remembers them, was thinking of making my own laptop desk with one of them mounted under it blowing the super cold air thru the table...any thoughts on this would help also.Last edited: Feb 10, 2015 -
009 is gonna help you drive those higher frame rates but not by much, if your budget can afford the 009 then by all means its the better option for your monitor
-
A friend in korea sent me two Samsung’s SM951, so I'll most likely go with the base M.2 setup then swap out for these if it can handle it. But not sure if it can..if not just save for future

Side note today when I talked xotic pc they recommended I get a asus G20 with 980 graphic card for my swift monitor -
GT80 980m SLI is gonna outperform a single 980 desktop

You mentioned non mxm gpu? The G20 is a micro tower with a desktop gpu -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Ooops, sorry, I missed that...... notebooks on the brain. Yeah, I thought you were moving from a DT, looking to replace it with a DTR. Yeah then, if G-Sync is your priority, stick with a DT..... the G20 would make sense considering you want to use your existing Swift monitor.
-
If you don't need mobility, it makes sense if you need a bit of both id still say GT80
, but a small desktop would better suit your needs and wallet if mobility isn't a concern -
Going from your gt80 -009, was wonder what your thoughts are, if I should go with -009 or lean towards the -001 -
Both 001 and 009 operate under thermal throttle, the temps aren't fantastic but they aren't bad either, expect a little. Noise and obviously a little heat. That much power in a small space is going to warm up, but it doesn't seem anyone has had thermal throttling issues thus far, a good paste job and your pretty much golden
The 009 is going to maintain a higher clock then the 001 as far as CPU goes, which would help slightly for higher frame rate and resolution of the Asus swift monitor, is it worth the extra money, that's a decision your wallet needs to decide, i would say its worth single digit increases in fps at higher res and higher fps -
As others have stated, GT80 is a fantastic performer, and 009 should help you get slightly higher framerates on some games. Both are power limited though, but by design of intel, so we can't achieve full turbo (009 can't maintain 4.4ghz, otherwise it would be amazing
)
Anyways, if I had the choice again, I would definitely go for the GT80. The keyboard is fantastic, the screen is top notch, the performance is superb and the overall quality is great!
And for a desktop replacement, I still get about 2.5 hours of use with the IGP -

I use small metal heatsinks under each feat of my machine on my stand to prop it up a bit more, you might want to do the same just to give the cooling the maximum headroom.

My machine has driver 344.79 installed and it states that it is up to date? Any get queued to install this and are you seeing any improvements?

CPU temps are generally a bit higher in SLI notebooks, but from what I have seen in all reviews and reports, ALL temps are really good, and I see no need for extra measures, such as cooling pads or the like. My particular GT80 has CPU temps a bit high (GPU temps are great), but this is the exception, and doesn't seem to be the rule...... and I should have this rectified soon.
In short, I think you will be happy with whichever model you decide. Good luck, and perhaps we'll se ya soon, as another elite flagship owner.

For those interested in fan control, Svet's latest Vbios tool ( HERE) has an EC Editor, which allows adjusting fan curve, temp curve, and temp threshold hysteresis.....even for the GT80 Titan. It should be noted however, that this tool does not currently support Maxwell GPU's.

Lurked here since i placed my order a few weeks ago. Just got my titan and it is a fine beast. Even bigger than I expected! Does anyone know of a backpack lathe enough to hold the machine, accessories and a towel and gym clothes? Maybe some notebooks too? I'm a power commuter so I'd like something large enough but tailored towards laptops like the targus xl (which is literally a centimeter too small).

Been drooling with this. I'm looking to replace my aging lenovo y580 (gtx660m, i7 Ivy bridge). I'm a casual gamer. Mainly plays FPS, Football Manager, Diablo, Assassin Creed then for work (spreadsheet, word, powerpoint), some photoshop, lightroom (as I'm a amateur/hobby photographer). Been looking for a cheaper Sager with i7-4720HQ and 970M 3gb with 16gb RAM. This cost around 1,500 with W8.
The model I'm looking is the one with 970M SLI for around 2,650, not the 009 or 001. Not interested on the 001 or 009 mainly I cannot justify spending that much money for my uses.
My questions would be judging from my typical pattern of usage, will this be overkill ? Its around 1k more from my initial plan. Would this machine last me longer say 5 years before I need the new one to keep up with the ever increasing requirements? I plan to use the Sager for 3 years like my current lenovo.
Any thoughts are appreciated. ThanksLast edited: Feb 13, 2015 -

@Forbigger:
Overkill? Question is..... would you rather have a system that under performs, or is only marginal to your needs? Since you indicate that you would like a system that will carry you several years down the road, I think you have answered your own question.
Undoubtedly, the 970M SLI GT80 is graphically far more powerful notebook than your first option..... and yes, you pay for what you get, but I think you will appreciate the added headroom you have in performance. You'll LIKE!
@ryzeki:
I too considered a single GPU choice, but more along the 980M, and in a GT72...... but considering Forbigger's cost for this, the SLI 970M GT80 looks like a better value. Also, though SLI may have issues with some games, SLI optimization has come along ways these days.

Thanks for the replies. I dont mind the size as it never leave my desk. In fact I'm looking for a bigger screen on my limited size desk. Never been to LAN party (too old for that !!) and mech keyboard is a welcome addition.
I guess my wallet is going to cry soon. -

LAN party, Too old for that? NEVER! You just haven't been to one of mine, LOL!
Yes, your wallet will cry, but your heart will be happy, and it will feel like Christmas again when it's UNBOX'in TIME!

It's very well made, with heavy duty zippers, a chest strap, and an included rainshell which is nice when the weather gets bad enough to worry about that expensive cargo. The bag itself is expensive, but I think Everki has a lifetime warranty for their backpacks so that's a load off the mind. It's also huge, as you'd expect, but it'll fit all that you mentioned and then some. It's got compression straps too, to cinch down when it's loaded for a slimmer profile. I've traveled a lot with it as my carryon and it's performed superbly. I would recommend it.
Plus it'd be funny to carry your Titan with your Titan, haha!
Can't wait for my 009 to get here. In the meanwhile, I'm living vicariously through you guys!Last edited: Feb 13, 2015 -

An Everki Titan for a Titan...... that is fitting (pun intended), isn't it? Let us know how it fits, and once confirmed, I'll add this to the lead (#1) post. I have an Everki Beacon I use for my 17" notebooks..... love the look and quality.

Been following the gt80 but not daily, I know it's early, but any thoughts or indications on the future of this chassis or too soon to tell? Will they be offering better CPUs in the future (I know they committed to a GPU upgrade or two already)? I know I'd love the keyboard, but have to wonder if a Clevo with a desktop processor would be better at this price point and size. I play a lot of simulators (X-Plane 10 for example or even ARMA3) that are very CPU heavy as well as GPU intensive, so wonder how this would hold up longer term with future GPU upgrades. Not sure if I'm ready to enter this size arena, but always curious about other options ha.
Just feels a bit odd that this would have the same CPU as my 4lbs GS60 I guess and thus have similar performance in CPU limited games.... seems for the extra girth and weight, there'd be more gain in that side of things, although I realize most games/console ports don't need the extra CPU power. Please don't hate, not my intent, genuine question, owned everything from desktop CPU powered 17's on down. Ryzeki will vouch for me and knows I change laptops yearly -
Just found this lounge and am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my 009 from xoticpc.com Modified the configuration up a little, but wanted to get some opinions form owners on whether the Heatpipe additions or the upgraded thermal compound is worth the cost? I don't mind either, but would rather save the money for other upgrades. I was also considering the difference between the Killer NIC n1525 and the Intel AC7260 (looks like the Intel has better Linux support and allows Intel WirelessHD to work where the Killer is stock, cheaper, allows the doubleshot up to but prevents WirelessHD.)
Sorry for the wall of words on my first post here, but I can make changes until the parts arrive at Xotic
PC and would like to take advantage of any input I can get.Last edited: Feb 13, 2015 -
Cool. I'd been looking at the Everki Titan before. I wanted to give my Targus a chance. The Targus XL sadly is spacious for my G73SW, but not a go for the GT80 Titan. So I think you're all right - a Titanic backpack for a Titanic laptop. Everyone has been laughing at me using the Titan on the train. I need more lap!!!! The darn thing is *almost* too big! I also sat on the quiet ride car and the mechanical keys drew even more glances.
Fortunately, it's done quite well with all the development requirements I've wanted it to satisfy. The CPU is quite snappy and the serious amount of memory helps with my horrible, leaky programming. Sadly, I haven't gamed on it yet, but let's be honest, that's my life. Nvidia throws free GPU's at me and I don't even have the time to game on the things. Love the system, though. Love it love it.
For those interested in the backpack :
Everki Titan :
Laptop compartment 12.99 x 1.97 x 20.47 in (33 x 5 x 52 cm)
GT-80 Titan :
Dimension : 13.02" x 1.93" x 17.95"
It looks like the laptop compartment is a go on the other two dimensions. Three hundredths of an inch might be within tolerance. If I can it in a retail store that I can return it to, I'll pick one up. -
I do agree the CPU can, at first, be a puzzling choice, but rest assured this new GT80 chassis will definitely spawn more versions. Quality is excellent, solid, well done. Cooling is great. The keyboard bar none is amazing.
The problem lies with intel now, with their seemingly weird decision to put only HQ processors now. They are quite powerful, to be honest. I currently maintain mine at 3.6ghz all 4 cores, and so far, it has proved itself to go toe to toe with far more powerful CPUs in general gaming.... anyways, what I am worried about is the direction intel plans to go. I believe that in order to keep the "extreme" idea of the GT80, they should go for a desktop processor. The problem I see with a CPU like 4980HQ is that the potential is totally wasted by the locked 47w tdp.
Man, just to give you an idea, my tweaked cpu runs exactly at the 47w tdp at 3.6ghz. If they allowed for 10 more watts, I could easily tweak it for 4Ghz, if not more. But alas, these are locked.
Since the new shift in gaming, DX12, Mantle etc, seem to put the burden on the GPU, we might not need as much CPU horsepower as before, but I still think a desktop CPU might be the best way to go. -
The high temp seen on the 4980HQ is not representative of the actual temp when in use! The thing is, while the CPU is self turboing around, it can consume like 70w (as seen on users with such CPU in their screenshots) so naturally, while boosting, the CPU temp raises. But after the turbo power window of time ends, the CPU modulates speed until 47w TDP is achieved. Owners can check this behavior via intel XTU stress test, under 5 mins. The temps will go down and settle on the 80s. It is only temporary bumps to 90s initially.
While the additions of heatpipe copper blocks and thermal compund is nice to reduce temps as much, I don't think temps are a concer right now. Zero users and reviews have seen actual thermal throttle, but instead throttle due to TDP. This is true for all HQ processors. Even the GS30, which runs a stronger CPU than my 4720hq, throttles due to power being locked to 47W.
As for the wireless solutions, so far I have heard very positive from Killer NIC n1525, and personally I have had great performance. This is a stark contrast with intel AC 7260, that while I thought it was better, it seems to have more issues (I have it with my Asus N550 and it performs just OK, not better than the Killer I have). So at least I don't think the wireless change is needed nor good enough.
