Well Breyl, maybe focus on having a way to reproduce the sound, for exmaple a particular song in youtube in full volumen. Then other Gt70 users can play the same song and identify the same issue to find if it's common or not. That way you can decide if you want to use your warranty :)

Make sure conditions are all the same across all users!

Not sure, but if it's possible to enable, why not ask your reseller to do it? I am sure most will comply. If not, I think it's a matter of enabling some commands, but I could be dangerously mistaken haha.

The TRIM command is enabled in the operating system and the SSD firmware.

The Intel 525 series and Plextor M5M series mSATA SSDs are good upgrade replacements to the stock SanDisk X100.

The 180GB Intel 525 is the ones I've been recommending since the 4K writes are better than the 120GB.

You can get a GT70-20D 001US model with 1 mSATA SSD and later put in a second or a third or get 2 mSATA SSDs and later add a third.

XOTIC is rarely if ever on this MSI forum so I have a hard time recommending them.

I recommend the reseller that's on this forum every day offering help and advice to all....GentechPC

If only one USB 3.0 device is not working and other USB devices aka flash drives do work I'd think it's an MSI bios issue with that device. It may or may not be fixes in future bios releases.

I have an MSI bios issue with an SSD that isn't seen on a cold boot while set to AHCI in the MSI but works perfectly in 3 other brand notebooks and 2 different desktops.

The device maker(Samsung) and MSI should be made aware of the device issue so Samsung can update the device firmware and MSI can add bios support in the next release.

I contacted MSI support a couple of days ago. I do fully expect again to be told that it is my fault for installing Windows 7 however, despite stressing to them that the problem(s) existed also with Windows 8.

I have the latest GT70 2OD (Win8) Bios, I shall now go and see of Samsung have anything i the way of updated firmware for their USB drive.

A tip I have learned over the years when talking to support is never tell them what you changed on a system you bought from them, only tell them the basics of what the issue you are having and divert questions with a question so the conversation doesn't get off topic of your ''problem'' and not what you may or may not have done with there system...Giving them too much info can hurt you!!

I know this, but in my case, any drivers that they directed me towards would need to be Windows 7 compatible, and not all W8 stuff works on W7....at least not without issue.

    GT70 2OD with 2x 128GB SSD is €2600. Might go for the GT70 2OC than (770M, 2x 128GB SSD, €1899).

Two problems with the 36000+ Vantage score MSI presented....... so yes, the score is overly optimistic, and should not be viewed as typical.....

1.) The machine tested was not stock....... x-treme processor used.

2.) The score is inflated, because 'PPU' was not disabled in the Vantage settings.

Your score of 30000 seems a bit high too....... could you post a screenshot of your Vantage score too?

    Thx!

    :)

As I suspected..... take a look at your inflated CPU score. This is a clear indication that your 'PPU' setting has not been disabled in Vantage. This is necessary to accurately benchmark NVidia cards with 3DMark Vantage, and normally PPU is disabled by default.... but perhaps not with the version you are running. If you run Vantage again (SCM set to 'Game' mode) with PPU disabled, your score will be more in the 25000 range. Also, Futuremark recommends Vantage be updated to version 1.1.2 for all WIN 8 systems. It's hard to see, but it looks like you are running an old version. Update, disable PPU, run Vantage, and send us a new screenie.

    Thx again!

    :)

don't know what ppu is. I'll try it again. Anyway here's another screenshot of the so called super raid (3 x 128ssd raid 0). Tested with hd tune. Seems close to msi claimed speeds of 1500mb/s.

A closer look I see you are running Vantage version 1.0.0.....

Update Vantage to version 1.1.2, and check it's settings. The 'PPU disabled' box should be check-marked by default. If not, simply check the box and you are good to go. Also, you want to insure Vantage is running the latest SystemInfo data, version 4.17. The download patch for this and Vantage 1.1.2 can be found HERE.

Vantage total score: CPU +GPU performance calculated together

Your CPU much slower than the CPU MSI used (4930XM) = worse total score

That last score is what you should expect with GTX 780M. Around 27000 in GPU score.

    Hello again everyone!

    It's me, the hapless unfortunate owner of MSI's GT70 20D UK99 craptop

Been getting used to life without USB 3 (naw not really, still trying to get it working all the time) and without wireless connectivity (microwave radiation is serious health hazard so who cares), but now it seems I am going to have to learn to live without the DVD player.

Been installing a few games, most of them transferred from desktop STEAM/Origin account folders on desktop, so no problems there. However, I just went to to try and install Pro Evo Soccer 2013 just then.....DVD was read, but Windows made some claim about the content not being valid. Strange I thought, so I tried, FIFA 13. DVD was read as blank disc. I then reached for the Witcher 2, just to check, and same thing, game disk read as being blank. The only disc that seems to be readable is the one that came with the half-working drives and wonky bloatware on.

What the hell is going on here!? I have never had so much hassle of a damn laptop (or desktop) in my whole life. Am I on the receiving end of some prankster at an MSI warehouse? Do any of the rest of you have this or other issues?

This quite frankly is getting to be an utter p1sstake! If I have to RMA this machine I shall make sure MSI have something to fix.

    Modern Day Benchmarking Suites.

For SSDs:Anvil Storage Utilities RC6 is the best>0Fill(Compressible Data) and Incompressible Data. The bench mark should be run using both setting to show how your SSD(s) handle both types of DATA.

What temps is everyone getting when gaming on their GT70 craptops?

Having played Dirt 3, for 5 minutes, my GTX 780M temperatures shot up to about 86C. When artifacts started showing on the screen, I hit the turbo-cool button, the fans kicked in like a hairdryer, and I managed to get the temps down to around 75C, which is fine (I suppose), but the overpowering drone of the fans is not.

I wonder whether MSI have rushed these out the door to be first on the market or whether they really just haven't thought about it. Worst £2300 I have spent in a long time. This stinker is getting RMA'd.

Have you messed with your machine? You are reporting very particular issues no one has. I just tested USB 3.0 and devices work with transfers of 100MB/s. Temps while gaming are hot indeed due to the hardware, but after 3 continous hours of testing I found that without turbofan, I can get at 90 degrees. Fans are not very loud without turbofan, temps high but performance was stable 100% of the time. It is a bit understandable due to the nature of the high end hardware. These tests were done on a 93F ambient temp.

Now... With turbo fan on, this machine screams maximum performance! I am using it overclocked to 980/2800mhz with max temps of 82 degrees for the GPU and 77 for the cpu! Sure it's noisy but this is for maximum performance, and it doesn't botherme! I got GPU scores in 3dmark11 of 8585!

Man these are fine machines. I have had zero issues so far, and my only complaint is the temps when non using turbofan. Then again, with stable performance, then I hardly care about temps.

It is possible that I have just received a stinker. As soon as I turned on Windows 8 there was freezes, stalling, and a general sort of dodginess that one wouldnt associate with a £2300 laptop. Had I given it a little test drive in a store, it would never have been bought. My girlfriend keeps telling me to get a Mac. With a Mac she says, everything just works, that is why she likes them. She reckons that if she had to spend the amount of time and suffer the frustration that I do with PC's, that she just wouldn't use them. But with windows based PCs/laptops, it seems that dealing with a certain level of issues is just the norm. To this end, the main 'messing around' that I have done with the laptop has been to get rid of Windows 8 and put Windows 7 on. I have also updated the Bios, all in an effort to get things to work as they should have been working in the first place. I haven't opened up the laptop. There is a sticker that says "if removed, warranty voided" where I would need to get in to reapply some thermal grease to the GPU, which is the next thing that I would do. Instead, I am just RMAing the thing.

BTW, when you state "90 degrees" without issue, do you not think that 90 C is very very hot for a GPU? Sure, it may work without issue today, but what about a month or so down the line operating at these temperatures? I got artifacts operating at 86C. The Kepler chips are 28nm. Is it not the case that the smaller the manufacturing process, the faster a chip can run without generating as much heat, but the smaller the process the more harm heat can do to the chip?

P.S. Since you seem to own one of these and will probably have a lot of experience with them if you are working for a reseller, could you tell me how the Backlight Keyboard Manager program works on your machine? On mine, it is unresponsive, and generally doesn't do what it says on the tin. For example, If I try to set instructions for idle mode, I end up not being able to do anything much that I intend and end up being stuck with whatever mess comes in 'Normal' mode. Not a big deal, but on every other backlit keyboard I seen, this is something that just worked.

First of all, the USB issues is not MSIs problem. It have nothing to do with the system. It is Intel that have screwed the pooch with the first batch of the Haswell CPUs where the USB 3.0!cannot wake up from sleep. That problem have been reported all over the internet. The new revision of CPUs without this issue is coming in July.
Now, should the shops that sell these affected CPUs alert customers about it? Or is it the customers responsibility to keep up? That is an interesting question...

Secondly, the DVD problems you report about is quite strange. The SATA cable that is attached on the motherboard from the DVD might be loose. Or you might have been unlucky and got a DVD drive which is a bust.

With the amount of time I spend on this issue, I am of course aware of the official recognition of this bug. However, my USB 3 doesn't work at all. Not from the very kick off. Sleep mode is irrelevant to me.

Probably, the DVD player could be fixed by slightly upping the laser intensity, but that isn't something for me to do. I find that when it misbehaves, a system restart sorts it out.....but still...just not good enough.

    Mat,
With all the problems you've reported, I can only come to the conclusion that your machine is dodgy and really should be returned for a replacement unit. Why keep messing around with a new laptop under warranty that clearly isn't working properly?

I have put in for an RMA. Due to the fact that any replacement that I get will come with Windows 8 installed however, which means I have to start all over again to get Windows 7 on and everything else installed (UK resellers tend not to offer the customisation options that US ones do), I would really rather avoid the RMA process if at all possible. The GPU artifacts to be fair did come about after the machine had been left on for 14 hours, whilst it formatted the 1TB USB 3 drive I have (I read somewhere to try this). Also, I only have one USB 3 device...it works on my desktop but maybe somehow it is incompatible with GT70 through no fault of GT70's? The failure of the DVD drive to read DVDs, does tend to occur when I have been plugging USB 3 drive in and out of USB 3 port, trying to get it to work.....maybe the laptop 'gets confused', the problems with the Killer E2200 drivers are well documented...(Alienware have dropped Killer Networking Cards for thier latest round of gaming laptops....not sure if this is part of the reason why though)......all these niggling things...driver and bios updates may sort out and if they dont...then RMA option will remain open to me.

I shall give the GPU some further stress testing and see how it wants to behave before deciding whether to press ahead with RMA. Since I would be getting a replacement laptop from the very same batch as this one came from, it may do nothing for me except force me to waste yet more hours getting it all setup again.

Make a Ghost backup of your volume before RMAing and then restore when you get a working MSI back. Of course when you get your new MSI back, I'd make a Ghost backup of the OEM install so you can restore it to factory conditions whenever you want, before overwriting with your Ghost image.

I have never done that before, but would it work in a W7 W8 situation?

What I mean is that W8 comes installed on the MSI Gt70 with a different disk format structure to the plain NTFS structure required to install W7.

It should if you make the Ghost backup include all the volumes and hidden volumes on the drive. No guarantees in life tho. Common issues are boot loader issues after you restore a backup.
If you happen to restore a backup and it doesn't want to boot, probably booting to a windows 8 or windows 7 install dvd and running the automated troubleshooter will fix the boot loader issues.

If you can, use a Ghost 11 boot CD that runs on DOS (free on certain parts of the internet) and do a drive to image backup and under the options, make sure it's set to a 'boot-image' so it copies all the master boot record/boot record/boot sector stuff too.
Sometimes it only likes esata enclosures rather than USB..

    hello,
just got my Gt70. I have Dell U2713HM monitor (Max resolution is 2560x1440). With VGA connection-give my max resolution to 2048x1152 and if you want it to max resolution to 2560x1440 i would need to use Dual-link DVI cable but got no dvi connection on the laptop. Can you still get the Max Resolution with some kind of converter or adapter? if yes, what kind of converter or adapter am i looking for? thank you

If I have seen this once, I have seen it a thousand times here..... wherein an inexperienced user is vexed with a singular issue, they are entirely resistant to the idea of a RMA, and before you know it, they are hurriedly off on a quest of a bizzillion different tangents..... in search of the nonexistent 'Golden Fix'. Some users wander in this journey of futility for weeks, if not months..... and normally in the end, there notebook is to the point of FUBAR (much worse than the original issue), and the notebook is RMA'ed anyway

Now herein lies the rub..... All the while, the increasingly frustrated user is dragging 'us', fellow forum members, along on their journey. I guess misery loves company, right? Don't get me wrong, we want to help, but most often in these cases, we can NOTHING to help you resolve the issue. Please remember, your original complaint was that USB 3.0 was not working, and the way you described the issue, this likely has nothing to do with the Haswell USB 3.0 bug, nor WIN 8.

Also please understand that sarcasm or rants will not be helpful, and attitude can very much affect the outcome...... specifically in the forum, and especially when dealing with the manufacturer. So how are you doing so far? Well let's take a look below at your quotes..... and it's probably not a good idea to publicly state things like; " If I have to RMA this machine I shall make sure MSI have something to fix"!

Regarding the notebook, I think most here do not share your assertions. I also believe the first step to your satisfaction will be the RMA you're avoiding..... so why delay? ;)

You get the idea here, right? At some point, this gets a little ridiculous.

Anyhow, Good Luck, and let us know how your RMA goes.

    :D :D :D

USB 3.0 issues, DVD can't be read, high temperatures on GPU plus artifacts when gaming.

Those issues are not related. Not just one hardware failure but several. Something is fishy here...

    Yes, very good.

We become knowledgeable in areas where we earn our living or in areas where we have a natural interest and curiosity. Neither of these apply to me as far as the configuration and setting up of laptop and PCs are concerned. Thus, I have limited knowledge about the configuration of PCs/laptop, but then you will invariably know zilch about what I do for a living.

Aside from this laptop having cost me three times or at least twice what most people would be willing to pay for a laptop, I have pished hours and hours down a black hole trying to resolve the issues and finally come to feel good about the laptop. Yes, I am frustrated, yes I have sometimes felt like punching holes in walls and in true form to human nature, I will rant and complain about it. Bear in mind, most of these posts are replying to different people and/or reporting on, asking for confirmation of, and help on new found issues.

I almost bought the laptop from your company due to it being much cheaper after VAT, Shipping etc, but having contacted the UK reseller OcUK, telling them I was cancelling to buy from abroad, they gave me a £200 discount. Although I would still have saved ~£200 purchasing from Gentech, at least now that I am definitely RMA-ing (the too hot GPU is the decisive factor), at least I don't have to deal with the costs and delays of international shipping.....so at least I done that right.

Yeah, it reeks of 'rushed out the factory to the market place, without proper quality control or testing'.

The fact that my GPU wants to idle at 44C, whilst everyone else reports there's idling in the low 30C range, suggests that I have a thermal paste issue other than a vBios issue. This would be something I could easily fix myself but to do so would be voiding my warranty. Still, can't be too sour towards the slave on $10 per day in the oriental sweatshop, who never took proper care when applying thermal grease to cooler. His head was probably spinning from his 80 hour week when my laptop happened to be assembled.

P.S. It is a computer tech forum by the way. Most people come to these places when they are either looking for help, information, or ways to improve their tech toys. The amount of times I have found answers in threads full of people telling the opening poster 'google is your friend'; 'go cry me a river' etc, is quite uncanny. Perhaps my rants and the responses will help provide someone with a bit of direction on related issues one day, thus sparing them the need to rant and dribble onto some forum

I've owned many notebooks and have worked on many more than I care to count.

Almost all notebook problems boil down to bad drivers and pilot error.

When you get a new notebook test it out exactly the way you received it.

Doing so will more or less let you know that the issues were before or after you started messing with it.

These new machines are being purposely made and setup to run Windows 8 whether we like it or not. That's the deal made between Microsoft and it's partners.

On the 26th of June they'll be a consumer preview of Windows 8.1 released.

I suggest everyone install it on a spare drive and learn to use it.

I'm a Windows 7 x64 lover but I know the writings on the wall and I need to bite the bullet and move on.So must you with your Windows 8 designed machines.

Hey guys, first time poster, long time lurker. I just pulled the trigger on this model today. I haven't gone through the previous 50 pages to see if there are many game benchmarks but I have a rather large library and would be happy to post some FPS/temp numbers over the next couple weeks.. I'll have the machine on Tuesday afternoon so if anyone would like any specific games tested out, let me know, if I have it I'll test it for you!

Certainly when dealing with MSI support, you could tell them that giant sparks are shooting out the USB ports and burning holes in the walls, but if you also if you tell them that you have installed Windows 7 instead of Windows 8, All they will say is:

"We suggest you not to change the OS to Win7.Because if you change the OS to Win7,it may lead to some problems.
If there is some problems with the operation system, please ask msi warranty service center for help."

Think I may RMA this and buy a different laptop all together.

    Someone please help.

Last night everything was fine, today I turned it on, did the usual thing, opened battlefield. fps varied between 8 to 15. Everything on the system is slow, to refresh a page takes about 2 seconds now...

What tests can I run? I dont get it, everything was fine :/

I run 3DMark, the only test i know of, and it seems normal
    Untitled 2.jpg

Yet everything is so slow ..

Even though I dont understand anything, is this normal?
    Untitled 3.jpg

fixed. Antivirus cause memory usage - turned it off, now everything works again.

Just thought I would post a couple of links that may be of use to UK Buyers (I've just stumped up the cash for a new GT70 2OD-099UK).

I had been pretty disgusted at the UK pricing of these laptops compared to the USA pricing, I was tempted to buy the USA Dragon Edition and import, but I didn't think it would be worth the effort trying to claim import tax back (I'm VAT registered)

I'd been all set to buy from SaveOnLaptops, but for the eye watering £2,299 inc VAT and delivery (3 year warranty upgrade available) - and this was the cheapest I had found after a lot of searching.

Just by chance I rang VIP Computers - they are trade only so need to buy via a company, but a much more sensible £2076 inc vat & delivery (but only 2 year warranty) - shows how much some of the above companies make for just selling these laptops!

There seems to be an option to buy an MSI Extended Warranty Package once you have the laptop, but so far I've been unable to find out the cost - I'm hoping it is £50 like the one from SaveOnLaptops

Note in my search some retailers seem to be selling models marked as GT70_2OD-099UK, but with Less RAM, or less SSD

Laptop Directs - 2299 but only 8GB RAM, and I'm not sure about the SSD.

Overclockers - Full spec but £2399

Scan - £2310 inc VAT and Delivery

Note - I'm not linked to any of these companies in any way (other than now a customer of VIP). Just very pleased to have got my purchase down to a better price. Will post a review once I get my new toy.

    EDIT - 2013-06-17
Another good option in the UK I considered:
    CyberPowerSystems Fangbook EVO
    - good value MSI Barebones, can configure to your needs (better processor etc)
    - But something get left out compared to the MSI Branded
    - Only 1 year warranty
    - No MSTATA raid adapter (only SSD drives)
    - I don't believe keyboard is steel series.

I think I am getting an Sager / Clevo afterall. I can get an 780M + 250GB SSD Samsung 840 + 500 GB SSD Samsung 840 for €2,3K. As much as I want an MSI, the clevo seems like a much better choice.

The Clevo is much better price wise in my opinion.

However I was swayed to buy MSI by the following:
    - MSI supports 4 Screens (3 external + Notebook), Clevo only supports 1 external + Notebook, although this can be overcome some what using USB Adapters
    - I believe the MSI is quieter (although I will find out shortly).

It is a real pain that you can't see these laptops before purchasing (at least in the UK).

You won`t void the warranty by repasting the GPU. MSI don`t prohibit that at all.
If you break parts because you are inadept at doing a simple pasting job, well that will give you big problems in terms of warranty. But its a very easy job.

As for the idle temperature, are you sure you have the IGP enabled and not having some software problems that force the dGPU to run? If it runs on the dGPU, the temperature is perfectly ok.

I am a little sceptical in believing that you really have all these problems. I`m sorry but like I said, they are not related at all. They don`t come from one single hardware issue. This is the first time I heard a MSI, make that any brand, have so many hardware problems at once.
Like WhatsThePoint explains, I`m more likely to think its a driver problem (could be several) than a hardware problem. Because there is no way a user can be this unlucky. I could be wrong, but this is the first time I`m hearing about it

I`m not sure about what the MSI GT70 cost in your country but consider this:

    GT70 vs P177SM
    Aluminum vs Plastic
Dynaudio speakers (best there is) vs Onkyo speakers
Semi Mechanic Steelseries Keyboard vs Generic keyboard (non mechanic)
6dB lower fanspeed at idle and load on the GT70
Super Raid 2 (3 mSATA SSDs in Raid0) vs normal SSD setup
Customizable fanspeed through firmware updates (software) vs locked fanspeed

    Yes, a very good choice.

Or, you could get the notebook replaced or repaired, and then experience the GT70 2OD, as intended. Again, your situation seems to isolated, and other users seem very satisfied for the most part. Delaying the RMA, is NOT getting your notebook fixed, and this is only extending your frustrations. Why not get on with the RMA, and move forward?

    :)

Regarding Sager/Clevo models with mSATA, another thought folks should investigate......

My understanding is Sager/Clevo has had difficulty setting up mSATA RAID0 without suffering data corruption. As a result, they claim their units only have one mSATA, and they place a 'Void Warranty' sticker over the other slot. Sooooo, if mSATA RAID is an important consideration in Sager/Clevo models, you may want to look in to this further. Just a thought......

    :)

I had a Clevo P170EM with an HD7970M. It got RMAd for a refund due to the notorious AMD dedicted GPU switching/throttling issue. I was happy enough with the laptop overall when it worked properly (and it did to begin with). Unlike the cases' of the Alienware and to some extent, the MSI laptops, the Clevos offer a nice plain sleek look which appealed to me. Apart from that and the much cheaper bang for buck price mark however, I couldn't really recommend much else about the Clevo. Cheap n nasty build quality, horrible sound quality through speakers and pretty sketchy sound also through headphones. The touchpad is one of those that is always shooting the cursor all over screen when typing (unless turned off) and it is pretty horrible and unresponsive to use apart from that. The MSI on the otherhand, is of very good build quality, nice touchpad that also auto switches off when keyboard is in use (some reviews state this as bad but I def think this is a very good thing), lovely keyboard, and a quality of sound coming out speakers that I would equate with a midrange desktop sound card and cheap and cheerful logitech speakers. Not a ringing endorsement of soiund quality in itself, but considering this is coming from a laptop, it is really quite excellent. The only aesthetic feature of the Clevo that is far superior to the MSI is the LCD screen. The standard matte Clevo screen I found to be fantastic, bright colourful, and defined. The MSI standard Matte screen however I find to be a bit dull, washed out, and lacking the sort of definition that I have come to expect in LCD screens.

Having spoken in overall strong commendation of the MSI however, the one I have got (MSI GT70 2OD 099UK) is proving to be a major pain in the butthole........but everyone else seems to be really pleased with theirs so.........

If pushed, I could make a (very boring) Youtube video proving the:

    USB 3 issue
    DVD issue
How internet suffers if I install Killer Network E2200 drivers.

I could also prove that my GPU shoots up to 90C+ within 5 minutes of Uniengine Heaven benchmarking, and I am sitting in Scotland in a cool north facing room, not in the middle of the Nevada Desert at high sun............whether I get the graphical glitches or even sometimes artifacts, is hit n miss...mostly miss...but they can occur.

I am not at home just now so I cant check, but I am pretty sure that for me to get access to the GPU cooler to repaste with a quality thermal grease, I would have to tear through a "Warranty Voided if Removed Sticker", otherwise I would have done this long before now. I am pretty sure that the iGPU runs fine, this I will have to double check, otherwise 46C seems to be in the order of 10-15C higher than the idle temps that are reported for this laptop on forums and review sites alike.
