So I went and got the basic one with 16gb of ram and decided to upgrade the internals. This is what I found:
Screws: There are a total of 5 kinds of screws.
On the case: 3 sets, I'll call them long medium and short since I didn't actually measure them but there should be 2 medium and 2 short and the rest are the long screws.
Inside: The MB screws are all the same so pretty straight forward there. The other types are the screws holding down the ssd and the wifi card.
Upgrading: Well I can tell you that the memory was not compatible with the Kingston Hyper X I got from newegg so don't get those. I ended up just forking over the extra $100 for the 32gb ram version from newegg as it was cheaper than buy the 1800 version then paying 140 for the 32gb kit.
SSD and HDD: I opted for the samsung 950 PRO 500gb since it fit my budget. I saw the plextor 1tb but at $700 it was way too much. The internal HDD... switch that out. If you have a 7200 rmp you will see a difference but for me I had an old 840 EVO 1TB so I put that in there and now this machine is fast!
Gaming: Pretty smooth in overwatch and playing on high settings I get no issue going past 140FPS. the KB is a treat to play on as the depth is great. Better than the p35X from gigabyte and cooler performance than the 980m in the gigabyte. The FPS is slightly better on the MSI but I think it has to do with the overall comfort of the screen, kb and heat. Also quiet compared to the p35x.
My issue is I did a clean install and wanted to restore it to factory using the ISO files I created. Unfortunately I will probably have to burn them on an external as I didn't opt for the USB stick. Wonder if anyone knows a way to turn the ISO to USB. Thanks in advance!

What ram did you buy? I put 32gb of Kingston hyper x 2400 in mine and it works fine.
As for your system restore, if you have an external enclosure, you could always clone the recovery partition over. Or boot from the old drive and run the recovery burn software to make a USB -
Hey guys I'm having a new issue and wondering if any of you have seen it before.
I plugged into an external monitor via hdmi and extended the display. When this is the case full screen videos don't work. I only get a black screen but do get audio. Full screen video works on the internal display but if I drag the window over to the external monitor the video stops working in full screen.
Additionally, when I try to game on the external monitor the games either refuse to open on the external monitor or they do but with really distorted colors.
I'm wondering if this has something to do with optimus breaking with an external monitor? Any advice?
The video issue seems to be related to html5 or something. I can watch things in VLC full screen fine.
Thanks! -

One other weird wrinkle:
When I have the external monitor connected, YouTube videos on the internal monitor display as a black screen UNLESS I view them in full screen at which point they magically become visible. Strange. -
is it reasonable to request color collaboration image be saved to usb ($50) (non 4k)
or is it a waste ? -

it seems the BIOS has decided to scale back the GPU memory clock on battery no matter what, anyone have insight? -

Hey guys, im considering buying this laptop but i have a doubt about the webcam resolution: is it 720p or 1080p (like it's advertised)?

To fix the Fullscreen and stuttering issue on external displays disable the Intel GPU in device manager. You can reenable when you unplug the monitor. (Yes I know this is not a long term solution but it works) You will need to close chrome as it will just be a black screen.

Guys how is the 120 screen ?! is it a far cry from an ips panel ?

What do people have their mouse settings set to? i use the mouse mainly with my left hand and find myself with my thumb on the bottom left corner a lot and end up accidentally dragging internet window tabs off the main window and misclicking things by tapping ie making desktop icons bigger or smaller.. Have people changed their sensitivities and gestures and turned options on or off to suit better?
Also i was wondering why they didn't include the nice material on the bottom cover like they did with the GS63. I would like some of that material on the bottom of mine it seemed like a nice touch!Last edited: Oct 4, 2016 -

This feature is on other MSI laptops too... a simple toggle off.
Not sure if this affects the GS73VR... but it's worth checking out.RMXO and John Bennett like this. -

Is it recommended to get rid of Dragon Center?
What's an alternative to Dragon Center?
Also is there a program that display Fps/temps etc while playing game like in the corner or something? -

I also Uninstalled everything and use Fraps for fpa display.

what cases/bags/sleeves have people bought for their gs73? i'm keen on getting something slim and protective to transport my laptop
thanks -
CPU temps 50 at idle seem a little high to me but it depends on your ambient temp in the room. Mine is 38 right now and my room is 21.6(71F) while typing this. I have Dragon Center deleted though and that makes a slight difference. Their power plans do funny things and the fan profiles are also overridden by the software. Might be something to try.
CPU coil whine on the i7-6700HQ is very typical. The extent is random and subjective but it's pretty much always there. As someone pointed out it might be worsened in these models because there are holes in the top.
Your CPU stabilized at 2.6Ghz while I was able to stabilize a little higher on Prime95. It's still pretty normal and that's a test that is not realistic at all to what normal programs do. For almost every other program you use, you shouldn't be throttling below 3.1Ghz at all. Regardless, try removing Dragon Center and see if that helps improve it.
The battery thing is normal for MSI. It's supposed to help lengthen the life of the battery. I go through laptops so quick though that I can't tell you if it makes a difference though.montobrah likes this. -

How do I get into the bios without the UEFI setting box in advance options? I think I changed to legacy now that option is gone. Thanks in advance.

Just got my GS73-025. While I am a reasonably experienced computer type, I am a noob when it comes to MSI computers. With new computers, I like to nuke the OS and go with clean installs. My question is what I should do after that, before I start installing programs, if anything? For instance I saw someone earlier in the thread talk about installing the Steel Series drivers from the SS website. Any other suggestions? While this is not intended to be a desktop replacement, it will still be a general purpose computer used for productivity, a little video/photo manipulation and of course, some gaming. Right now I don't plan on any overclocking or replacing any of the stock hardware.
Thanks for any suggestions!hmscott likes this. -
I stumbled upon this thread and 1st thing I did was turn off those privacy stuff on windows 10 with O&O shut up. Afterwards install all my drivers/programs (except for dragon center, all drivers from MSI). There's a new version for killer suite you may want to check that out. And just any other stuff you want to put on there antivirus/malware wallpaper configurations etc. then once everything is where you want it to be you can create an image in case you ever need to revert back to it.hmscott likes this. -

Hopefully these come through because I'm uploading them from my phone. These are a lot better than the unit I initially had from my review. They're still not perfect but a lot less sharp than before.
I can barely fit a business card in the worst spot, which is the front. The speaker jacks are pretty flush now. The only other slightly bad spot is the cpu exhaust, which can fit a sheet of paper. I think I had similar pics of the bad one on my review to compare. -
Does this laptop have a super charger USB port that outputs more power than normal? USB 3 is 0.9amp up from 0.5amp on USB 1 and 2. However I recall previous MSI laptops had a dedicated fast charging port that output 2amp. Does this laptop have one?

Has anyone tried to undervolt the GPU or CPU? Was it easy? Did it drop temperature appreciably without undermining performance?
