That's a battery conditioning "feature" of MSI. If you keep the laptop plugged in all the time MSI will let the battery charge level vary. It will say "plugged in but not charging" or something to that effect.

    It's not a bug, it's a feature :)

I did a fresh install of windows 10 and downloaded steel keyboard 3 series software from their website but my number 2 key which has the @ symbol has changed to the " key next to my enter button. I go into the software and it has 4 default configs one which shows the @ symbol in the correct place on the number 2 key but I can never seem to get it to make the change at all as in the number 2 key stays with " and not @ when I hold down the shift key.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

    thanks

    That's a new one :)

I never had a problem with this when using the SteelSeries software downloaded from the SteelSeries site, except when my GT80 was brand new, then only the MSI downloaded version worked.

You might try downloading the version from MSI, the GS73 support page - if it is up - or from another GS series laptop - and before installing uninstall the current installed version and reboot before installing the replacement.

sounds like you downloaded the German keyboard drivers or something. Make sure your region is correct on the site you got your driver from.

Was the keyboard working without the Steel Series application?

i discovered the cause of the micro stutters... it was the Nahamic 2 sound program that came with MSI. it sure does make the sound better but it was buggy. after uninstall i am smoothly playing all games!

    Hello All!

New to the forum! Glad I came across it. It's good to be in a community, all with some love for this beautiful machine!!!

    Quick question:
I've been seeing issues with sleep states, hibernation and blank/black screens. It appears that when the machine sleeps or hibernates (and occasionally when the screen just goes blank after a time out), the screen won't come back on. I haven't tested it with an external monitor yet, but am tempted. I called tech support and they had me upgrade both the integrated and nvidia drivers, but that didn't seem to have any affect. Is anyone seeing anything similar or is this unique to me?

I am using the unit for video editing and everyday business use. Occasional gaming is a fun plus. Thanks in advance for any help!

    Don

that's amazing. have you experienced troubles with microstutters or coil whine etc on the 4k like others have mentioned here? as well, how loud/hot does this laptop get?

i'm thinking of either getting th gs73vr 4k, or the gigabyte p57x v6. i want to game, do amateur photo editing and office work, but don't want a jet engine/blast furnace combo. and these two computers seem to be within my budget here in canada.

Like the previous poster said, they all have coil whine, especially the i7-6700hq. I've experienced the stuttering on graphics switching issue but not the issue during gaming. I'm not convinced it's an "msi only" problem though. It's way too early to rule out a driver issue and there isn't enough info out there to see if all optimus+ pascal laptops are experiencing this.

    Hi guys,
Forgive me if this has been addressed previously. I did read through this thread (multiple times) as I was deciding which notebook to buy.

I just got the 4k GS73VR and I have a few questions I'm hoping you all can help with.

    1) My CPU usage is constantly around 100%. I've seen some people mention something about search indexing but I don't quite understand what they're talking about. How can I fix this? The processes using CPU are windows search protocol host and windows search filter host.

    2) On my surface 3 the pinch to zoom gesture on the touchpad functions the same way as if I were using the touchscreen. The pinch to zoom on this touchpad is using the "zoom" feature within browsers and scaling everything up instead of just zooming in on the page. Is there a way to fix this?

I really appreciate your help and if anyone has questions about the 4k model let me know.

I've got questions as I'm still deciding on whether to get this or the 1070 gigabyte with known keyboard heating issues or the massive clevo p67x. Having a 17" screen is important for me:

    1) How hot does it get? Can you work/game with it on your lap or does it get to hot? Does the keyboard get hot?

    2) How loud does it get to your ears?

    3) How does the screen look?

    4) How's the performance in games?

    5) How's your coil whine?

Could your zooming/scaling problem be related to touchpad settings? I found this thread: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/X0wTNQpfl2k

Just a chime in on this coil whine issue. Neither of my GT62 laptops Skylaje 6700hq had any coil whine. Total silence. So no it does not happen with all Skylake laptops. No other GT62 user has reported coil whine either.

I changed the thermal paste on mine to a liquid metal paste and the low 80s is where I see the temp get up to on some of the more strenuous tests and I don't believe the fan is spinning up very high when that happens either. But I believe the thermal profile on the laptop allows for 90c and a bit higher without issue.

I know what it is and sounds like. I had a GE62 that had coil whine but improved with turning off c-states.

This problem is not present on the GT62. I had 2 GT62s and I doubt either of them not having the issue is the exception. It may not be present in new gt72/73 either as I haven't heard of anyone with that issue on those either. The motherboards are different from previous gens.

I've only played about half an hour of No Man's Sky so far. CPU and GPU temps were in the low 80s. Externally, the bottom of the laptop was uncomfortably hot to touch. If it had been on my lap I would have been uncomfortable. The keyboard was hot but not uncomfortably so. The fans were not quite as quiet as I had been led to believe by other posts, but they were quieter than my last gaming laptop (A first generation Alienware M14x).

This screen is gorgeous. I'm a little hesitant to stick with it because the battery life is really poor. I'm getting about 90 minutes on a charge when I've read that the FHD screen model can almost get 4 hours.

At idle the fans and heat really aren't going away. I think this might be due to something else. I can't seem to get the CPU usage below 100% no matter what I do. At first it was those indexing processes. I think I figured that out, but now whatever else I'm using seems to be constantly maxing out the CPU. Steam and chrome are using as much CPU as possible at all times. This could also be why my batter life is so poor.

The time I spent in No Man's Sky was silky smooth with everything maxed out on 1080p. I also installed skyrim and tried it out at 4k just to see how it would be. I wasn't running fraps but it was somewhere above 30 at all times, at least.

I can hear the tiniest bit of coil whine while plugged in if I put my ear right next to the machine. Otherwise it's imperceptible.

I'm thinking that the zooming thing is some variance with drivers. Maybe microsoft's own drivers just handle pinch to zoom differently? I used a Yoga 2 Pro for the last few years that behaved exactly the way this machine does.

Microsoft, elan and synaptics all handle pinch to zoom differently. They all also have different gestures. I personally fine it really irritating because there's one different item from each of them I really like and dislike. I wish they would just let us decide what gestures we want.

Just as a quick update to my last post:

I went through and uninstalled just about everything that came pre-installed and now my machine is only using about 8% CPU while browsing and downloading stuff in steam. Fans are inaudible. Temperature is perfectly comfortable on my lap.

You might want to try downloading and installing the latest Nahamic 2 update from MSI's website. I was having problems with Nahamic 2 as well, but this update's release notes explicitly say it fixes a compatibility problem with Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

The update requires complete uninstallation of the earlier version anyway, so you're already halfway there if you decide to give it a shot.

FYI, if you guys want to have better sound, uninstall that Nahimic crap and install these older Realtek drivers: http://download.msi.com/nb_drivers/ad/7368_PG403_Win8.1_Win8_Win7_WHQL_6.0.1.7368.zip

This will allow you to use an unlocked Realtek Audio Manager and access the full EQ instead of the watered down Nahimic. You lose access to your subwoofer control, but to be honest, the control on the last one was crap since bass wasn't audible below 70Hz. With this I can hear bass as low as 35 Hz and I feel it on the bottom of my laptop. It's like I have a whole different speaker system now.

I turned on virtual surround, loudness EQ and set the EQ to live. Difference is night and day. I just hope Windows updates don't kill it. I need to find a way to prevent it from automatically updating.

Edit: I'm just now noticing that the headphone jack has to be switched manually after this. It also doesn't sound as good as before. I'll have to look into this further.

    Hi Guys,

I have this baby like I told you 2 weeks ago, and I NEED YOUR HELP !

Everything is fine except the HDD !
I just started to stock some movies and pictures and it is awfully slow !!

I know it is a 5400RPM but it is even lagging when I play a simple movie with VLC (if I put it on the HDD not on the SSD) !! There is something wrong here !!
(the movie is laging every 10 sec, and if I copy paste photos on the HDD it s gonna take 1hour for 100 pictures.............)

What can I do to have a more in depth diagnosis and/or try to fix that ?

Thanks for your help, I am a bit disapointed ... :(

I don't have a link handy, but Google "SeaTools for Windows" - it's Seagate's hard drive diagnostic tool. I also had a horribly slow HDD, and it failed the short diagnostic test in SeaTools with a code that indicated likely bad sectors.

ok new issue. tried gaming on battery power. set everything to maximum in the windows power mode (high) and even adjusted min/max processer state 100% and then went to NVIDIA and set that to preferred and showed tray icon to see if it is being used. i then played Witcher 3 and alternated between plugged in and battery. it was clear to see the fps drop when i was on battery and as soon as i plugged in it was smooth as silk.

    what gives?

can you downscale to 1080p when gaming so the games will run better (on a non 120hz version) ?

Yes, you can always downscale the resolution to 1080P since it will place lesser load on the GPU.

Do you mean you got the same problem ? What did you do ?

Yes, the SSD works perfectly. If I move my lagging movie from the HD to the SSD for example, the movie plays normally.

Hi all, I have the 120hz screen version. When I game on my external monitor I get framerate issue. Is it because gpu thinks I am using a 120hz screen?

Do we need to install msi software to get the matrix display working? Cheers

Yeah, I had the same problem. I was able to download stuff to the HDD just fine, but then installing it from there to the SSD was agonizingly slow - the Windows 10 Anniversary Update took hours overnight, for instance. I initially just disabled the HDD in Device Manager, since I was considering upgrading it to a second SSD anyway. A couple weeks later, I tried reenabling it, and it inexplicably worked just fine. I ended up having to return it within 30 days of purchase for unrelated reasons, but hope to be buying another one soon.

    My suggestions:

    1. Run SeaTools and ATTO Disk Benchmark to diagnose and gather evidence of your performance problems.

    2. If you're still able to exchange it where you bought it, do so.

    3. If you're unable to exchange it, contact MSI for service or replacement. Fortunately, the HDD is much easier to replace yourself than the SSD, so they may just send you a replacement drive.

    4. If you prefer to upgrade, pick up either a larger/faster (7200 RPM) HDD or SSD (SATA-III, 2.5" 7mm) and swap it out. Note that despite the scary warranty sticker, if you're in the US, this upgrade will *not* void your warranty (provided you don't damage anything in the process).

    Hope this helps...

Hey all, I'm so glad I found this thread!

I've been looking at laptops for the past week or so, with my budget slowly increasing since my search began. Based on the form factor/design, power, and just overall 'niceness,' I decided to go ahead and order a GS73VR from Newegg and it should arrive tomorrow!!

My main question is, am I screwed for buying a stock verson? I really toyed with the idea of having one customized and having the OC (I think that's what it's called) paste applied, to help with the apparent cooling issues this laptop has. If I'm just going with a stock version, am I really looking at decreased longevity? Would it be worth it to get a cooling pad? I really don't have much experience with laptops, I've always just built my own desktops.

I ordered from newegg mostly because I kind of needed it here by this weekend...but if it's that big of a difference with...future proofing....this machine, I'm debating not opening and just returning the stock one, then ordering and waiting just a bit more on something from XOTICPC or something.

Either way I'm really excited to have the same amount of power as my desktop...but in a portable form.

    Thanks all

Repasting would have probably given you a few degrees wiggle room. A cooling pad for this machine is pretty much worthless though. The intakes are on top so blowing air on the bottom doesn't so a whole lot. If anything it'll keep your lap cooler, but a book or plastic tray will do the same.

If the temps really bother you, it's pretty easy to undervolt the CPU. I dropped my CPU temps by roughly 10C and even my GPU temps dropped 5C from doing it since a heat pipe is shared.

Thanks! I'll take a look into undervolting.

I'm not so much worried about the heat and physical touch, I'm mostly just concerned about component longevity. If the CPU is running THAT hot, I'm just concerned the quality of the laptop will really degrade over time. For the cost, I mean as long as it performs well for 2-3 years I'd be happy as can be.

Still time to decide to return my stock unit....but if it's just for a couple of degrees I'm not sure I'll go through all the hassle of getting that paste on a new unit.

    I'd do any changes yourself.
For my own sake, I didn't hesitate to replace the storage and repaste the cpu/gpu.

Well I saw several pages back one poster linked their guide for disassembly and upgrades. That said, I feel like I'd be far too uncomfortable to lift the motherboard and what-not out to do that myself. The only thing I'd be comfortable with is replacing that 1TB HDD, which I'll do shortly after getting the laptop.

So as long as you folks think the stock everything would do me just fine (with no awful, permanent damage to the machine) my mind will be at ease. (Gaming in 1080p, games like Witcher 3, DOOM, No Man's Sky, World of Warcraft, etc., sometimes hooked up to a 1080p television).

Of course if I could find a shop/somewhere that would repaste it several years down the line once the warranty is up, I'd be just fine with that option....

Can't wait for the GS73VR to arrive tomorrow!

Oh, I'm really going to enjoy it :D I'll definitely keep those upgrade, repastings, etc in mind for the future.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Can't wait to get my hands on this beautiful machine.

Its really easy, its just a bunch of screws and some cables to unplug. With the cables, there is a latch to pull up that unlocks / lock the cable down.

Also, have a sheet of paper and put the screws on the paper so you know where the screws go to.

I changed out the stock 16GB to 32GB RAM, 1TB to 2 TB HDD and 256GB m2 SATA to 500GB NVME m2. It took less than 30 min since I was going slow and used a piece of paper to let me know where the screws belong at.

Well, I'm always filled with some sort of anxiety when working with computer components! I could see myself doing this in the future, especially if someone were to make a Youtube video documenting the process. I'm very much a visual learner and could just see myself frozen, looking at my open laptop, horrified, if I hadn't seen someone else do it first. The written tutorials are nice, but maybe someday there will be a video guide I can follow step-by-step.

For now I'm going to see how slow the HDD and SSD are in the computer. I'm sure if the slowness starts to bug me I'll be more interested in taking a look at those innards.
