A hard shutdown rarely does any damage, and since you are now up and running with no errors, that really answers your question. No worries, enjoy it.

It doesn't hurt to run a disk check after a power off or BSOD - or unscheduled incomplete shutdown - schedule a disk check for next reboot for your C drive and any drive with a pagefile, I have found it beats another follow up BSOD, and the requisite admission I shoulda checked the darned disks :)

note: New updated bios .10B New "max memory bandwich" in menu... oh only to limit to 2133/2400 wow thank you Mr. msi bios staff, my corsair memory can be underclocked more. Always an unstable RAID/AHCI useless option showed (how many of us have more than 1 SATA port?), but no brightness setting (how many of us work/play at night and with the integrated keyb at less than 1m to this hudge 17inch screen, test go to bios and you are shocked), no voltage offset for cooler cpu (for such laptop and cpu it is a hudge shame), no XMP2.0 manually select (for corsair brand and others than skilljaw), dGPU always off for travellers, all usefull menus hidden again (boot menu is correct I like it). Cannot update my XMP profils from ram to be compatible with your 'AUTO' mode all is locked again (my profils give CL14@2666 and CL16@3001 but auto select is JEDEC CL18@2667 because 1mhz more than XMP@2666 and not more because hidden limit menu set @2667 WTF), no udpdated GOP driver so 1sec freeze keeps my pc unstable with your (restored or updated) designed OS again, Good new year msi. I called you I wrote you so thanks again I love you too.

note2: this hardware and this bios support memory @3200 ... and more with XMP. I did not bought a phone/tablet let me free, -msi-, with my -personal- computer. Stop trick me, -gaming laptop- you said so it is in the design to keep top performance, do your job and love what you are doing. So unlock/unhide what you can for designed user.

What are the temps like on this laptop? I see very mixed reviews of it. I am interested in the 4k one

@Joshva : 4k/FHD must have same temp: cpu usage low38/46° and high78/92° (undervolt/stock). Undeed you cannot run full speed on your knees, dGPU 78/80° when it is running the bottom is too hot.

We run AIDA64 Extreme for stress testing the CPU and monitoring temps with HWinfo. AIDA64 seems to be the most strenuous software that yields the highest temps. Also, AIDA64 can really get a CPU running hot within seconds if there's an issue with the thermal.

GPU TEMPS Idle: 39c Max: 77c-78c

    Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra TEMPS

Hello all. I've been here diving into the GT73VR. Almost ready to hit the track for real.

Maybe I missed it, but is there not a benchmark thread?

To those that have the 4K display, can you easily enough change the resolution back to full HD 1K via right click on the Desktop -> Resolution? I assume so .. but does it look like a clean full HD screen then (suitable for gaming still)? Or is something off. So it wouldn't be as simple as using the 4K screen in 1K mode to run business software.

Coolaboratory Liquid ultra, in my old laptop, the paste would 'wear out' after 6-9 months or so, decreasing thermal conductivity over time. Had to re-apply multiple times (every 6mths or so). I'd take reliable stock compound over compound that wears out. But that may just of been a bad batch I used. No it wasn't dust.
    Thanks

Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra is like water, and will leak out if you don't seal it properly. If you do seal it properly, it will last for years.

Thanks for the temps. On the GS73VR.... do you find the the palm rests get uncomfortably warm after 2 hours of gaming?

    I'm hearing mixed things

The only time the palm rest gets hot for me is if I use the second drive for gaming. Even then, it's not that hot.

Actually Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra, it hardens, was difficult to scrape away every time I applied.

@anyone, 4K screen in 1K mode looks clean, or would cause a headache? thx

Has anyone had issues with the battery calibration software from MSI? I got a new MSI GS73VR-225 with the Kaby Lake i7 and when I tried to calibrate the battery for the first time it said the time to recharge the battery to 100% will take 30 min from 90% battery but in reality I've been sitting here for over an hour with out the calibration starting

Webcam and Microphone have stopped working, or were never working from the get go.
I've been using a headset this entire time so only noticing now.

Does anyone know which drivers I should be looking into to get the webcam up and running?
Going to start un/re-installing nahimic to try and get the internal mic back up and running in the meantime.

So, Fn + F6 is apparently used to get your webcam turned on. This is a new one.
    Anyways, still working on microphone.

I went through a similar experience, I had to use Nahimic to get the mic working, I plug in some Bose earbuds and talk into the mic on the laptop, great sound and very comfortable.

Yeah got everything working now, It was Nahimic and during/after installation it was still being goofy.
Re-installed the realtek drivers and Nahimic, now everything is working as it should.

Headset takes priority, but when unplugged the internal kicks in as it should.

the GS73VR has one of the slimmest chassis on the market, but the heat dissipation isn't the greatest

i've been reading abit about the undervolt and it will help the cpu temp, 1 of the copper heatsink bars is shared between the GPU and CPU

with great success here are my results for the i7-7700hq kaby lake

all readings are at peak and no thermal throttling

    undervolt tool - Intel® XTU
    monitor temp tool - HWMonitor

    without undervolt
    temp : 92c @ 3396mhz

    undervolt -0.100v (stable so far)

undervolt -0.115v (stable BUT crashes on shutdown)

undervolt -0.120v (stable but random crashes every once in a blue moon)
    temp : 76c @ 3396mhz

    undervolt -0.125v (unstable - crashed when exiting/closing DOTA2)
    temp : 74c @ 3396mhz and still stable

undervolt -0.130v (unstable - crashed while in DOTA2 when tooltip appears)
    temp : 72c @ 3396mhz

undervolt -0.135v (unstable) *frozen on restart*
    temp : 70c @ 3396mhz

Hey, everyone. I've got a really strange problem with my GS73VR and I'm at my wits end. When I boot the machine I have NO DISPLAY whatsoever UNTIL Windows loads. No MSI splash screen. When I hit DEL to get into the BIOS I am certain I am in the BIOS, but the display is OFF. When I boot to F3 MSI recovery, I am certain I in there, but again no display on the screen.

    I have tried:

    1. Reflashing the BIOS using afuwinx64 throught the command line.
    2. Reflashing the EC firmware from the MSI support page.
    3. Resetting the EC through the pin hole button on the bottom of the laptop.
    4. Trying to boot into the BIOS from the Windows Reset this PC reboot into UEFI firmware settings option.

Miraculously I was able to get a display/splash/BIOS upon boot ONCE and then same thing all over again on subsequent boots. I have scoured the internet but no one seems to have a similar issue.

    Any ideas?

I've thought about that and plugged in my external monitor but I don't get any splash screen or BIOS or anything there. The external monitor only works when I'm in Windows. I've tried HDMI to HDMI and mini display port to HDMI.

try plugging it to an external display hdmi & dp

but as soon as you power the laptop on, close the lid and see if it forces it to display the POST screen on the external outputs (i recall older laptops like HP and IBM did this)

All of the laptops, all brands, that use Skylake / Kabylake (Haswell / Broadwell too), can benefit from tuning the voltage given to the CPU.

By default all of the laptop CPU's get too much voltage at default, same for the desktop CPU's in laptops and desktops.

It only makes logical sense to reduce the voltage to the amount the CPU needs to work in it's full range of performance - this improves CPU life as well as more importantly reducing the heat output of the CPU.

It's easy to do, anyone can be shown how to do it, requires no pulling apart of the laptop - no re-pasting needed for many after undervolting.

It's worth doing for everyone :)

Is the stutter gone with the new GS73VR with the i7 7700HQ?

The SSD and 2 gig HD are different as well.

This is the one I am talking about. The Pro 225

    The GT73VR 4K screen is AUO109B, G-Sync at 60Hz.
The Thunderbolt controller is an Intel 6540 which uses PCIe 3.0 x4.

Anyone know how gs73vr 120hz screen compares to Alienware 17" r4 FHD IPS 300 nits?

I'm debating if I should sell my gs73vr and get Alienware 17 r4.

The TN 120hz screen seems washed out when I am viewing the file explorer. The folders and fonts don't pop. The colors arent deep. Is this normal for this screen? I have an Alienware 17 R4 with a 1080p IPS screen and it is day and night compared to the MSI TN.

So i'm doing a fresh install of windows 10 on my GS73 which I've replaced the main ssd in it.
I'm making the windows 10 usb for install and just need to know which software is needed apart from what I have listed.

    1. Latest Bios Update from MSI website as of december
    2. All other drivers from MSI support except:
2a. Killer Wireless driver only from their website
2b. Latest Nvidia graphics from Nvidia site

    Software to install will be:
    MSI True Colour
    Steelseries Keyboard
    any others?

Also should I avoid driver update programs like driver genius and driver booster as they might try install drivers they feel are newer than the ones MSI have listed under support for specific models?

On my new hard drive once I've done the fresh install and installed all the latest drivers is it best to create a new partition for recovery or just make an image of the drive?

    thanks

Partition your OS Partition C: to 100 GB and the rest for D:

Install your games on D: or another partition if you have more drives

    Use this guide:

NBR Windows 10 Clean Installation Guide

To grab the product key which is embdedded in your BIOS:

I use RWEverything to find the key in the BIOS:\
Download RWEverything and launch it a admin

Click on ACCESS > ACPI Tables

Then go to the MSDM Tab:

Only use official drivers form MSI, never use those crapware driver updates as they often find drivers that may not be relevant to your desktop and/or desktop drivers (ie. the desktop Realtek Audio Drivers)

    Update 2/6/2017

I received my laptop back from MSI RMA. They had to replace the LCD. Working great now!
