Desktop RTX 2080 is ~225W. 150W is ~66% of that. If you reduce the power by ~33% then you reduce the peformance by ~33%.

According to UserBenchmark, desktop RTX 2080 is overall ~21% faster than desktop GTX 1080:
    https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-2080-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1080/4026vs3603
If you cut RTX 2080 performance by 33% that's... er... about 12% slower than desktop GTX 1080.

Unless you cherry pick your benchmarks which I'm reasonably confident nVidia have for their presentations.

Is that TDP only for the GS65 or also for the Titans?

While I agree with your reasoning, there's no way to tell until the GPU is out in the wild so this is he say she say at this point between us and Nvidia. Plus, you're comparing different architectures that have their own efficiencies.

Going back to the 1070 Max Q being faster than a desktop 980, here's UserBenchmark showing that it is faster by a measly 3%
    https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1070-Mobile-Max-Q-vs-Nvidia-GTX-980/m301524vs2576

Any word on whether this generation has a fingerprint scanner? Was disappointed to find out only 1 SKU had it in the 2018 models which wasn't available in the EU. Wish the website mentioned what version HDMI and DP ports(DP over USB C too) it had :(

    Same.

If not maybe we can somehow obtain the extended trackpad from the new Creators laptop which has a fingerprint scanner in it assuming they're the same size... would much prefer the power button scanner though.

Is there any purpose for two separate backslash keys? lol

HAha, time for a new thread to focus on the new release, some of us are still working on THIS model and I need help. Anyway, here's my stress test temps using full fans, not much change stress test 2 full fan.PNG
    GPU temp was fine
    stress test 2 full fan.PNG stess test 2 gpu.PNG
Of course I am not running the latest greatest games so I don't need the 1070 gpu (or the newer one) and my temps are great. What I wanted was a thin, light powerful do everything machine and this is it. And my understanding is rather than upgrade the entire machine you can use the thunderbolt to connect a gpu. Nayway, up next is benchmarks. I REALLY need someone to interpret them for me though. Just want to make sure they are in line with others and I didn't get a lemon.

Sadly it's normal. The heatsink and CPU contact isn't the best, this is why you have elevated Max core differential. (Temperature differences between cores).

Other than possibly sanding/lapping the heat sink there isn't much you can do.

Not sure how much better an exchange unit could be. My devices suffers from the same, it gets better with repaste, but not by that much.

Temperatures will be better with UV and repaste. And if you like, you can lower the max core frequency for even cooler temps.

You can increase your GPU core frequency a bit more when you get around to tweaking it.

RTX 2080 vs. RTX 2080 is the same Turing architecture. Different revisions but still the same. Some efficiency improvements are to be expected in the portable revisions but 30%? Not within the same architecture. We'll see that 30-35% improvement (or more) with the Ampere architecture but that's at least two years out.

If wccftech is to be believed, 2080 Max-Q will clock at 1230 MHz. Compared to desktop 2080 at 1720 MHz. That's about 30%.

    Exactly the point.

When you were comparing performance of a 2080 to a 1080, that wasn't the same architecture. So your comparison of a 2080 Max Q (based off 2080 Desktop Performance) to a 1080 doesn't add up because of different architectures and efficiencies.
Also, I rely on notebookcheck.net for accurate info on mobile GPUs ( https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-2080-Max-Q-Graphics-Card.386276.0.html)

Lastly, even though it's a measly 3%, The 1070 Max-Q is still faster than a desktop GTX 980 so Nvidia's claims are correct.

Very Happy I sold my 1070 GS65 in December now. Probably gonna be between this and the Acer Triton 500 for me. I'm actually leaning towards 2060 full card over the 2080 Max q though because of heat and price. I think the 2070 max q is likely going to be a disgrace for performance so basically this gen it's 2060 or 2080

I guess my luck got better returning my 1070 laptop because of a defect. Digital Foundry showed a 2060 smoke a 2070 Ti. I don’t believe a 2070 Max-Q will underperform as badly. The Max-Q’s of this generation are better off than last from what I’ve heard. Fingers crossed lol.

I'm getting the heatsink if it is stronger than the 1070 Max-Q version, I'm sure there will be plenty available for purchase when the mass production starts.

Seems like the extra 2 heat pipes were added for the VRAMs, one of them is linked to the CPU heat fins, which means the CPU fan is sharing some more cooling power to the GPU side than the 1070 Max-Q version, hopefully this doesn't weaken the cooling power for the CPU side.

Er... nVidia made that comparison (2080 Max-Q vs. desktop 1080). What I did was examine the validity of their claim. When I compared desktop 2080 to 2080 Max-Q for general power consumption vis-a-vis the new power supply to get my 33% cut approximation that was the same architecture.

They say "[c]urrently it looks like there will be two variants, a low power 80 Watt variant with 735 - 1095 MHz core clock and a faster 90 Watt variant with 990 - 1230 MHz core clock)." If notebookcheck are correct then there are two portable versions of RTX 2080: the low power Max-Q version and the higher power but still cut down mobile version. Which means the Max-Q version in the GS65 refresh is cut down about 37% from the desktop version.

And GTX 2080 Max-Q looks to be faster than desktop GTX 1080 in the same way: a measly 3% give or take depending on how much efficiency nVidia can wring out of the Max-Q drivers.

The GS75 doesn’t need the MB flipped to upgrade from what I’ve heard. It has an extra heat pipe over GS65 and it’s thicker .75” chassis 4.96lbs accepts up to 3 ssd m.2.

It's not just a simple proportional rule,...mobile MAX-Q architecture have software and hardware tailored for reducing the consumption (cherrypicked efficient components etc.) so just doing a thumb rule won't be enough to reject their claim.

And a 1070 max Q is faster (by more than 3%) than a 980 in 3D mark and the GX531 with max Q on Notebookcheck is faster than the 980 on all games (yes maybe with better drivers I didn't check but older games are still faster on the maxQ). So I don't need to go further to reject Nvidia's previous claim that the 1070 max Q is faster than the 980 : it simply is ;).

For the 1080 vs 2080 max-Q time will tell (and we will not have to wait for too long).
If we compare the 1080 maxQ to the desktop 1080, I don't see why the 2080 max-Q will not be faster than a 1080, the jump to Turing will bridge the gap, I'm confident but it's good to not be naive and eat every marketing slide you see, I just think here they're not wrong.

The problem will not be Nvidia thermals...it's intel, always Intel that messes up my thermals.

    Seriously they should go with a i5 4c/8t + 2080 max Q.

The 2080 max-Q will most definitely need mroe cooling than a 1070 max Q but I sure hope they worked on the CPU thermals !

The gs75 might be interesting, it will have the form factor of a normal 15.6" thanks to the new bezels but with a big gorgeous screen and improved thermals.

I'm not rejecting the claims. I never said that 1070 Max-Q isn't faster than desktop 980. I never said that 2080 Max-Q won't be faster than desktop 1080. I said that given the power available, 2080 Max-Q will be significantly cut down from the desktop version and that it will be only marginally faster than desktop 1080 as a consequence. This is borne out by the data published by notebookcheck.

I haven't been saying their claims are wrong. I've been saying that their claims are misleading about how much faster 2080 Max-Q will be.

    HELP!!!!

OK, back to the current release again. I'm to the point of tweaking windows 10 (i have done very little) and I decided to get into event viewer before I did too much and see what is going on and to my surprise, just doing a startup or a restart causes all my cores to throttle and be limited by system firmware. Not sure why this this is happening, my machine is cool. Also, all the sudden my fans are kicking in a lot more too. They kick into high for no apparent reason other than some windows processes hogging the cpu, usually only lasts a minute or two but not sure why any windows process would need to use that much cpu power. I'm not sure what to do??? Anyone else encounter these problems. Another problem i had was i did a registry search for a key and while searching my fans kicked in and windows hogged my cpu to the point of my touch pad becoming unresponsive. Any ideas people? Seems like a windows problem more than a cpu problem. Ugh, things were going so good. Here's a screenshot of my event viewer, this is the case at every start or restart Capture.PNG

    From your link
That would put the 2080 max q within a regular 1080, and a 2070 max q within a regular 2060... so why use a 2070 max q vs a regular 2060?! At least this does mean that you get 1080 performance on thin machines, I guess.

So I found my problem, first what was going on. If I left the laptop sitting idle for about 5-10 minutes all the sudden CPU usage would ramp up and fan would kick in. I used resource monitor to see what process/service was using the cpu when this happened. The culprit was windows defender anti-virus.\I disabled it in group policy editor, problem solved. For now I installed Malwarebytes and am using the free trial for real time protection. I could use some recommendations for a free real time solution. I've used Avira on my old laptop for quite some time but am open to suggestions.

    Using Windows Defender? Seriously dude?

No need for any trial, install Panda Free Antivirus and be done with it! Just make sure to uncheck all the search bars and fluff with it during the installation, all you need is the Antivirus...

The only thing you'd wanna do is register with your email and in the options, uncheck the Panda News and Security news and you're gold!

Oh and switch your Malwarebytes back to the free version with no real time monitoring as you don't want 2 realtime AVs that will cause havoc on your machine. Just Keep Malwarebytes as a secondary scanner if you wish for those fishy files

I am personally interested in the GS75, as it has a numpad, which was the main thing I missed in the GS75.

Performance wise, I think they will be a small upgrade, more like a side grade really. I don't think there is much info yet on how they will fare. I hope other GS65 can chime in regarding thermals. I am eyeing the RTx2080 max q, which seems like it will be similar to my GTX 1080 right now, as to not sacrifice a lot of performance for going thin and light, in case I end up buying one.

Marketing and greed. They can charge a $200-$300 premium because 2070 Max-Q is faster ("faster") therefore better ("better") than RTX 2060.

I for one won't be upgrading to the 2080. The 1070 does everything I require and most games I'm into are pretty old anyway.

The next one I'll buy will do 4K at a high refresh rate with ease. That might be a generation or more away yet.

I have survived so far in this world without ray tracing. I will continue to do so.

Have used Win Defender before in my Clevo laptop with 6700K - 7700K and 6 core 8700K without problems as yours. Stock or with a nice overclock doesn't matter.
 The problem isn't Win Defender... But THIS is still a good advice, no matter.

If you run into same problem as mentioned #Anyone else encounter these problems. My fans kicked in and windows hogged my cpu to the point of my touch pad becoming unresponsive#. Fix the underlying problem.

So any GS65 Owners chime in with real world temps and experiences? Curious about the chasis as it looks like that's not changing.

QUESTIONS, PLEASE HELP! Hi guys, so I'm in the process of undervolting and have a question. I reached -.150 and have remained stable. Almost all my temps are down quite a bit. I have a cpu monitor running and while stress testing using XTU I noticed its always the same 2 cores 5&6 on my meter that are causing the thermal throttle. All the other cores are well below the limit. About the highest I've seen in the other cores is 84C while just those 2 are reaching 90-91C. My cpu monitor lists 12 cores, and I use core temp to monitor. Any ideas why 2 are so much hotter than all the rest. My guess is a bad paste job, and if that is the consensus I have some artic silver left over from doing a paste job on my old laptop but it seems no one is using that anymore, any reason why I shouldn't be using it??? Thanks for any help

The problem was DEFINITELY windows defender anti-virus, after disabling, problem has not recurred, period. BTW, was never my intention to use windows defender, just haven't gotten to the point of replacing it.

When I install Windows, before I touch anything, the first thing I do is disable Windows Defender from within the app itself, then from the Group Policy Editor, then again using O&O ShutUp10 then I run Autoruns and type Defender in the search box and uncheck all the tasks and process that load automatically at system startup to avoid any conflicts with the Antivirus that I will install.

If I'm using Windows Defender, a simple thing like opening my software folder which has many sub-folders each with its own custom icon, they load in slow motion one after the other despite me having a fast laptop and SSDs.

The major issue with Windows Defender other than it being heavy already is that it has no whitelisting feature, so if every time you open a folder, it will re-scan every single file again unlike other good AVs that never re-scan a file unless the file's hash has changed.

My setup with CPU undervolt and GPU undervolt/overclock with a custom fan curve hits 80c and 76c when playing games.
If I put the laptop on a stand/raise the rear 1 inch, my temps drop to 76c and 73c.
I personally have no issues with temps.

Did you read his problem? We talk about two differet things. Slow loading icons/folders vs. moderate Cpu usage with following unresponsive hardware can't be compared.

If you can't run Win Defender without such flaws... RMA or fix it yourself. Have yoo ever seen your hardware becoming unresposive if you used Win Defender? The laptop is flawed, bruh!

Since the laptop is so thin, it can be hard for companies to make the heatsink tight enough, to get an even paste-spread. I wouldn't recommend you doing it yourself (unless if you insist), you might just get an RMA on it, and maybe they'll replace the heatsink and repaste. Sometimes the heatsink is also bent/not straight. Up to you :).

I have had the same issues, just even worse. Did an RMA, and got better temperatures overall. Even though some cores does have higher temperatures, it isn't too bad :)

As an FYI, that’s with fans set to maximum.

I got custom fan curve on cpu and GPU with max fan set to 98%. Temps usually start dropping when 65% fan kicks in.

Just to clarify my is LM with Fujipads thermal custom

I think I will also begin to do this every 2 months.

Just need to get another syringe of the stuff to have when I run out.

Stock thermal material, approximately -150mV undervolt, 39/38/37 turbo multipliers, a custom fan profile (it was linked a few months ago). Idle temps around 35C, normal load around 80C, peaks around 90-95C. No thermal throttling or power limit throttling.
