My turn for a question because my Google-Fu is failing:

How do I set the fan profile?

    Thx.

I also couldn't believe that it booted up when I was trying for the first time, except tRRD_L, tRRD_S, tWTR_L, tWRT_S, I loosen all other timings, tested 100 x 14 (2800MHz), it worked, then I tested 133 x 11 (2933MHz), it worked again. I was like o_O seriously? Also no change in voltage.

Use Silent Option, the latest build was written for Skylake but works on Coffee lake:

I got a GS65 yesterday, it's alright so far, main issue I am seeing is stuttering with Optimus, just doing the most mundane things will trigger the dGPU for 5 seconds. I'm running the latest versions of Windows 10, along with the latest Nvidia and Intel drivers (not from MSI). I'm aware of the tool to make the dGPU active all the time, but that doesn't help me when it's on battery. Anything I can do? This issue appears to affect every laptop using Optimus.

MSI has released the Finger Print driver for GS65 today, Inf files, anyone know how to get them installed, no such device showing up in the device manager?

Edit: Never mind, I guess it's not for us as Donald@HIDevolution previously mentioned.

Firstly, right click on the ZIP file you just downloaded, go to PROPERTIES, then tick the box in the bottom right to unblock the file as it was downloaded from the internet

next, extract the files to a folder

now go to device manager, find the fingerprint scanner, right click on it, choose update driver, then point it to where you extracted the files and hit next

The fingerprint sensor is only available on the MSI GS65 8RF Stealth THIN-259 at this time. All previous SKUs do not have it.

So I just got my GS65 from Best Buy and the first thing I did was make a burn recovery drive just in case and then clean installed Windows 10 LTSB. I grabbed all the drivers I could from MSI besides the BIOS and firmware stuff, updated fully with Windows Update, and for the most part everything seems to be working fine except for.

    1) My light next to the power button is always red no matter what I'm doing on screen. Even during startup and shutdown, whether I set it to high performance or battery saver, it has never turned white like how I saw the store display model does. My Nvidia Control Panel is set to Auto-select the preferred processor but it seems like my laptop never uses the integrated graphics. I'm kind of worried this will affect the battery life when I'm on the go.

    2) I'm getting strange stuttering when streaming videos. It's consistent and obtrusive when watching Netflix even when I'm not doing anything but only occurs when watching Youtube if I do things like move the mouse over the video player and off again. I don't get any stuttering when I play any movie I have stored on my SSD or when I'm playing games though.

I would greatly appreciate if anyone has any suggestions. Other than those two issues I love this laptop and hope it will last me at least the next 4 years.

Edit: I found out 2) was entirely due to chrome's hardware acceleration and turning it off completely fixed it.

Did you install the newest Intel graphics drivers? Also, are you using external HDMI monitor? The VGA signal is going through dGPU all the time when connected to external screen.

An interesting (or maybe not) point: Optimus switching works through the Thunderbolt port.

Hey everyone, I'm looking for anyone who uses VR regularly with their 1070MaxQ card. Looking at buying either a GS65 or GT63, likely through HIDevolution, but I am worried about two things.

    1. The GS65's 1070MaxQ card won't be enough to run AAA VR games like Elite: Dangerous etc (doesn't need to be buttery, but not choppy either).

    2. The GT63 will prevent me from using an eGPU for the next gen of GPUs due to no Thunderbolt 3.

Anyone want to make me feel better and tell me some good stories about VR on a 1070MaxQ? :D

You don't want to use a next gen GPU via egpu with thunderbolt 3. The performance is beyond abysmal. Check the results with users trying that with 1080(ti's) 's on Alienwares.

Is there a better alternative? Is there any hope of us being able to hook up an eGPU for the next gen?

Hey there, I've been playing L.A. Noire on my GS65 for a few days now and I've noticed the fan noise sounds a little strange - it has a weird whirring to it that I hadn't noticed before while playing games like Far Cry 5.

I'm guessing it is because it's only taxing the CPU as that's the only fan that gets up to speed (its an older game and doesn't require as much GPU power) and the weird whirring sound was masked by the GPU fan getting up to speed in games like Far Cry 5.

But the CPU and GPU fans have 2 clearly distinct sounds.

Would someone be able to set their CPU fan to 150% and GPU to 0% using advanced mode in dragon center to see if they experience the same as me? Just want to make sure I've not got an issue with my unit (best buy model).

    Thanks :)

Egpu was made for boosting ultrabook gpu performance, but ultrabook physical (cpu) performance is way below gaming notebook. But there’s TB3 bandwidth that you’ll have to face. For high end xx80 laptops, eGPU won’t bring better performance than dGPU even you put 1080ti or Titan XP, but note it’s only for 1080p or 1440p, on 4K it’s different story, it could perform better than 1080 laptops. I play 4K with my 1070 maxq laptop, and get performance between 1080 laptops and 1080ti. Next gen xx80 will perform better than current 1080ti, so for 4K gaming there’s still hope for gaming laptops in eGPU setting. Note also you’ll get better portability with maxq laptops compared to 1080 laptops and lower system thermal because of host (laptop) and device (enclosure) share the heat is also a bonus on this setting.

    Hey everyone,
Does anyone have a problem like this:

Monitoring temps with HWInfo: CPU, PCH, GPU, SSD

After the laptop goes to sleep and resume, the PCH temp shows 0.0.
If HWInfo is restarted right away the PCH is missing from sensors.

Sorry just to clarify, you are running VR? I don't think that the 1070Max-Q will not be enough, I want to confirm it will be from someone who actually uses VR with this card.

Tons of people do VR just fine on 1060 laptops. The 1070 maxQ is more powerful so there's no possible issue unless you get a bum unit.

I've seen this on other motherboards over the years, it's normal, at least it's a normal failure of Sleep / Hibernate that can occasionally hang the network and other devices, which is why I don't use it if I can avoid it. Cold-booting is more than fast enough - I also disable Hibernation / Fast Startup.

Coming out of sleep and waking things up can cause timing issues with drivers and OS sync'ing up. I used to get a regular 1 in 50 (blue moon) failure of the ethernet to come back after Sleep, simple disable/enable of the adapter didn't help, so I was forced to reboot.

    I'm sure it's a similar issue with re-initializing hardware after wake-ing up.

I wouldn't fight it, wait and restart hwinfo or whatever needs rentry - killing processes can hang them never to come back, requiring a power cycle - not just a reboot.

Does a hwinfo64 "reset" (button on button bar under dialog) after a minute of wake time work?

No Reset doesn't helps. I am asking if other people have same issue so I can report to MSI's forums with the home of fix some day.
I think this is EC problem, but that's just a guess. My Lenovo (5 years old) doesn't have such a problem which means nothing but still its annoying.

Forum reports are good, but actual Tickets opened by owners get logged and reviewed by engineers, so you might consider doing both.

If you can characterize other components / devices that don't come awake or initialize coming out of sleep that might help too vs if it's just this sensor that's dead after wakeup.

You can do VR with a 1060. Why would a 1070 not be able to do it? It's VR-ready with NVIDIA.

I told you guys you can switch from the iGPU to the dGPU in the GT75 Titan.
It's in the Bios, just annoying to do.
No one has tested yet however, if programming a "01" into EC RAM register F1 and rebooting (in RW Everything) also switches from one GPU to another (it does on the GT75VR and GT73VR).

Hey guys, I am thinking about LMing my GS65. I wonna protect myself from the leak, so I want to select the best solution. As I found, I can put liquid electrical tape ( this one?) around the area where LM applied. What do you think about my choice? Is it good or you can offer better one?

Another question: thermal pads. Just to be sure: I have to buy Fujipoly Thermal Pad - 60 x 50 x 0.5 and this would be enough? I mean, do I need to buy more or the one of other thickness?

Never heard of that but it SHOULD work. As long as the THICKNESS of it right after application is *LESS* than 0.2mm when compressed fully. Just make sure that you attach the heatsink quickly before it dries. You do not want any sort of barrier adding any resistance to the heatsink's downward pressure on the CPU, because these laptops already use worse than atrocious mounting pressure already.

Actually I found that if you use 0.5mm for the 3 regulators at the CPU side, the pad will have little to no contact at all to the heat plate, I went for 1.0mm on those instead. Stock was 1.5mm.

I didn’t notice a difference when I flashed the firmware. Probably more so for “Auto” fan users.

The 1070 is 80-90 Watts vs the 1060 being 60-70 Watts. Battery will be better with the 1060 but I suggest you play games plugged in.

Thanks! Also how good is the CPU performance of this laptop while on battery. I only want the laptop for CPU intensive software, no GPU involved. If anyone can show Cinebench scores would be great. I'm testing now a Macbook Pro 15 2018 and is awesome that it performs as good on battery than while connected.

I’ll do a test later tonight. I honestly cripple performance (2.2ghz max, then 25% cpu performance in power settings on battery) to get longer battery life.
My highest Cinebench score for all cores boosted to 3.9GHz is 1263 (plugged in)
