That being said, all CPUs will undervolt to different amounts because of the VID being reported by the CPU. Some people may have lower VIDs and thus will not be able to undervolt as far as some others.. that doesn't mean it's a bad cpu at all.. A CPU that requires a lower VID completely stock basically means it's a better chip. I used to think a CPU that didn't undervolt was a bad thing but it's actually the opposite. I've seen stock CPUs only needing .9 volts under max load at stock levels.. And others will be at like 1 volt under stock settings.
My GS65 will only do -162 on core/cache before I BSOD.raz8020, hackness, hmscott and 1 other person like this. -
The screen on my GS65 Stealth Thin is gone crazy, and I think I might have damaged the flat cable connecting the screen to the motherboard. Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement flat cable (other than at MSI)?
It says on the cable the following:
ms 144z edp cable
K1N-3040103-C85
(D3)2018/03/20
I'm already trying to buy it at MSI but they're supposedly taking up to 8 weeks to get it...
I also cannot RMA it as I'm in another country now. Even if I go to the US I cannot way for the 10 to 30 days it takes to receive it back from RMA after it's fixed...
Thanks a lot for the help! -
Hey. I want to buy this laptop. Tell me please, in the basic version (GTX 1060 16Gb Ram, 256Gb ssd) , is there a logo highlighting?

Sorry for consecutive posts, but on an unrelated note, does anyone have the link to the latest (Coffee Lake) version of the MSI Silent Option? Can't seem to find it anywhere. Want to rid myself of this Dragon Centre nonsense once and for all.

I may be in the minority here but I simply just turn off Turbo Boost all together 99% of the time (during gaming even) and I suffer little to no FPS loss in my games and my notebook is extremely quiet, even during a Witcher3 session.. I notice that the GPU fan is far quieter in operation than the CPU side..
So for example, I'm undervolted -162mv.. Under max load, i'm only seeing 15 watts draw on the CPU at 2.2ghz (no turbo). Measured using ThrottleStop.
I'm on stock MSI paste still and only seeing mid to high 60c temps during Witcher3 on CPU and only about 76c on GPU.
I know it's pretty bad that we have to drop performance on the CPU to get decent temps and to stop the fans from getting too crazy but this method works great for me and i'm seeing zero performance loss in my gaming experience so far. 2.2ghz across 6 cores is still blazing performance, granted.. There may be plenty of games that don't use multithreading properly at all where 2.2ghz might actually be a performance hit.. but so far i'm seeing no side effects of the base block of 2.2ghz.
I also just normally use my machine at base clock 2.2ghz for 99% of other things without any sluggishness.. Sure it's definitely not as snappy on the Windows side but it's still plenty of horsepower.
My CPU fan never kicks on during ANY operation in Windows now. I have a custom fan profile that only turns the fan on if I hit 55c~ on CPU (using Dragon Center) and even under persistent load at 2.2ghz the machine tops out around high 50s (fan rarely turns on).
I find the GS65 to be pretty amazing after being downclocked. It's still nice knowing I can go full tilt and let the CPU rip at 3.9ghz across all 4 cores any time I want. -
MSI GS65 Stealth Thin review: An elegant and portable gaming machine

The GS65 Stealth Thin redefines how you enjoy a 15.6-inch laptop. The ultra-thin bezel allows this premium gold and black design to fit into a smaller chassis. Elegant, sharp, and breathtakingly slim. See at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GS65-Stealth-THIN-051-i7-8750H/dp/B07BBJKCYG

Guys I'm planning on getting an external UHD Blu-Ray player and to be able to play movies on this computer (then getting the video to a 4K TV through HDMI) my processor must support Intel SGX Technology. The i7 8750H supports it of course but the BIOS also needs to support it and I don't see/don't know how to check is the MSI GS65 BIOS support it.
Does anyone knows something about it? I'd really appreciate any information.
Thank you! -

I noticed that the AHVA bleed (not backlight bleed but yellow bleed due to AHVA-IPS) is quite noticeable on dark images and also varies more or less if you move the display or simply touch the bezel under the display. Is it normal?
-
-
Just to check, are the CPU and CPU Cache voltages locked together? So if my CPU is -150 and my cache is -100, are they separately undervolted, or is the CPU locked to the Cache's -100?

Quick question. So after I fresh installed windows 10 on the new SSD, my keyboard doesn't light up anymore. I reinstalled steelseries engine 3 and still not working, is there anything else I need to do? Or did I damage a ribon wire somewhere?
-
HIDEvolution's support is slow to respond - can anyone answer whether there are any precautions I should take if I plan on added a 2nd SSD to my liquid metal repasted GS65?

In case you're wondering what size of sleeve to order, I got a 14.1" sleeve off Amazon from some Chinese company called AirCase and it fits nice and snug, without the zipper making contact with the laptop body. I personally don't like loose cases, so this is great. A couple of images for reference.

I used lower voltage for Cashe for my 6700K (stock/ low overclock) and it worked (lower temp). Could be different systems/firmware behave different. It’s trial and errors.Last edited: Jul 10, 2018 -

@Donald@HIDevolution and any other Notebook Expert, do you know if the plastic around the display of this laptop's monitor is fixed with glue -adhesive or snapfits?
It seems to be my backlight bleed - Mura effect has something related to not perfect plastic to panel assembly. -

Hey GS65 owners, I followed this thread voraciously when I was trying to decide between the GS65, the 2018 Razer Blade, or the Aero 15X v8 for my new laptop. I'm pleased to say that I decided to go with the GS65 -- mine arrived last Friday and so far I'm really happy with it. What follows is a quick review of that laptop that I'm writing because MSI promises me a SteelSeries Siberia 200 headset if I do.
Full disclosure: I'm writing this review in exchange for a gaming headset. You can decide for yourself if that compromises its legitimacy.
Towards the end of June, I bought an MSI GS65 Stealth THIN-054 from GenTechPC. The interesting specs are:
- 2x8GB RAM
- GTX 1070 Max-Q
- 256GB SATA III SSD
The list price for this unit is $2,000.00 USD. Additionally, I bought it during GenTechPC's spring sale, so I got a free thermal compound upgrade (Thermal Grizzly Cryonaut) and a 30-day dead pixel warranty for the display. I also opted for GenTechPC to install Fujipoly thermal pads, perform a clean Windows 10 install, and include a USB recovery drive with my order. By taking advantage of GenTechPC's 3% student discount, I ended up paying $2,026.66.
This model is very similar to the Best Buy exclusive one, whose specs are identical except for the SSD. The Best Buy model has a 512GB SATA III SSD. I decided to purchase from GenTechPC over Best Buy for three reasons:
- The free thermal paste upgrade. This was very important to me because my old machine (a 2014 Razer Blade) couldn't get through an hour-long gaming session without shutting off due to extreme temperatures.
- Buying from GenTechPC saved me about $140 in sales tax over buying in person from Best Buy.
- I planned to install a 1TB NVMe SSD as soon as I got the machine, so the initial disk capacity was irrelevant.
The value proposition is one of my favorite things about the GS65. This thing has the same internals as laptops $300 (the Aero 15X v8) or even $600 (the 2018 Razer Blade) more expensive. The only real tradeoff is the case quality, which I'll address below.
The second thing I did upon receiving the laptop (after making sure that it booted) was crack it open and install my brand-new HP EX920 1TB SSD (which I found on Amazon for $279.99; that brings the total cost of this machine up to $2,306.65, for those of you keeping score). This brings me to the first negative point I want to make: the motherboard inside this thing is inverted. In order to access the SSD slots or RAM, you have to remove the motherboard from the chassis, which involves disconnecting various cables and connectors. This isn't that big of a deal to me because 1) I personally know my way around the guts of a computer and am comfortable dealing with ribbon cables; and 2) I don't expect to have to do this more than once or twice throughout the life of the laptop.
I did have one "uh-oh" moment while installing my SSD, though. After I had put everything back together, I tried to power the machine on without plugging it in first, and nothing happened. It turns out that disconnecting the battery from the motherboard flips a switch or something that requires the laptop to be plugged in before it will power on. It took me about 90 seconds to sort that out, and it's been running fine ever since.
As for performance, guess what? This thing is really fast! The CPU and GPU are both at the bleeding edge of thin-and-light laptop components, and it shows. So far, I've been playing games on my external 2048x1152 60Hz display, and the GTX 1070 Max-Q achieves more than 60 FPS at maximum settings on every game I've thrown at it. I also tried running Deus Ex: Mankind Divided on the built-in 1920x1080 144Hz display, and, yep, at least 144 FPS there too. I've never used a high refresh rate display like that before, but it definitely makes a difference for games that require a lot of rapid camera adjustments (like first-person shooters). It kind of bums me out that I'm going to have to decide between the higher resolution of my external display or the smoother motion of the built-in display going forward. Maybe I'll have to upgrade my external display soon.
In terms of thermals, my system idles around 45-50C. While gaming I see temperatures in the low to mid 70s, but I've seen it spike to the upper 80s. I've also undervolted the system by -0.125v (via Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility) and tweaked the fan profile via MSI's Dragon Center to be a little more aggressive in order to ensure cool temperatures. Naturally, the laptop's fans do make noise, although I don't hear any fan whine, and subjectively I'd say they're quieter than the 2014 Razer Blade's fans, which they are replacing.
I like the SteelSeries keyboard. Some people say it's mushy, but I find it quite comfortable. I especially like the way the keys are designed -- I have fairly big fingers and I find myself missing keys on this keyboard less than I did on the Razer, although most of the time I use an external keyboard anyways. The per-key RGB lighting is fun, although I don't care too much about that kind of thing. Right now I have it on the "Static ColorShift" setting, which is just a slow cycle through the rainbow. I need to figure out how to integrate it with my calendar so that it switches to "American Flag" on July 4th.
The touchpad is a touchpad. I'm not a touchpad connoisseur because I use a mouse most of the time.
Connectivity is awesome. In particular, I think the RJ-45 ethernet port gets omitted from too many devices these days. I personally am happy to add an extra few millimeters to the case so that I don't have to use a dongle in order to get a wired network connection.
What I'm really thrilled about, though, is the Thunderbolt 3 support. I think this is a very thoughtful inclusion on MSI's part, as it gives me something of an upgrade path going forward. The component that's going to become obsolete the soonest is the graphics card, and with Thunderbolt 3 I can connect to an external GPU instead of having to replace the entire machine.
Finally, there's the case.
First of all, I really like the copper/gold accents and the understated dragon logo. This thing looks sweet.
What people have been saying about the case is true: the aluminum is too thin. It gives in some places and flexes in others. However, I don't think it's fair to call the case flimsy. It's not machine from a solid piece of metal, like a Razer Blade or a MacBook Pro, but it's not made out of plastic either. In order to get it to bend, you have to apply force. Probably more force than you should be applying. There are only two spots where the bending and flexing actually bother me: 1) the power button; and 2) the display. The power button is fairly stiff and situated in an area that's perforated to provide airflow, and I don't like that I have to press down so hard to use it. The display, well, use two hands when you open this laptop, unless you're opening it from the middle. The display definitely needs to be sturdier.
At the end of the day, though, if you're like me and this thing is going to sit on a laptop stand on your desk 90% of the time, the case is a non-issue. The other 10% of the time, the laptop is still a $2,000 machine, so treat it like one and you'll be fine.
tl;dr
If you're a value-focused shopper like I am, the MSI GS65 Stealth THIN-054 or THIN-037 (Best Buy) are by far the best choices in the cutting-edge thin-and-light gaming laptop space right now. None of the competition comes close to matching MSI's $2,000ish price point, and (in my opinion) none of the competition offers anything to justify the markup, either. Bonus points if you can get freebies from a reseller.
Handle it like the $2,000 laptop it is and you'll be fine.
PROS
- CPU/GPU performance
- Ethernet port
- Thunderbolt 3 support
- Value proposition compared to competitors
CONS
- Inverted motherboard
- Take care while opening the display

What are some of you non-LM folks using for your fan curves? I’m trying to find a nice balance between cooling and noise, currently average cpu temp is 69 and average gpu temp is 71 (gpu doesn’t fluctuate as much as cpu)

So I finally got my Stealth back from service. I don't know what was broken, but support fixed it for free! That's all I care about
I opened it up again, upgraded RAM to 32 gig, added a WD blue 1tb drive as a second drive for storage and did a LM repaste on the CPU and Kryonaut on the GPU.
I went from max 94°C right after boothing even to roughly 82 MAX when running Heaven Benchmark AND OCCT at the same time. GPU will go up to max 82 in that case but only temporary. i am still using the default fan profile.
I can also Undervolt the CPU/Cache -150mV.
Super happy with the notebook so far, but there are a few things I am wondering about...
1. in XTU the settings state that the CPU should boost up to a multiplcator of 41 but I never see more that 3.8 GHz. I`m not throttling at all according to HW Info so I dont know what the cause is. i've read that the GS 65 CPU runs a bit slower than the competition - is that it? Can something be done about it?
2. The SSD is somewhat "slow -ish" compared to the revies. I get around 900 Write and 1400 read in AS SSD Benchmark.
3. What's the best fan mode to run the system in when gaming? Does anyone have a good fan curve?
4. One more thing. i am using an exteranal Monitor, too. When I try to capture the screen in OBS, I only get a picture for the external Monitor, the normal display shows black in OBS. Anyone have a clue what that might be?hmscott likes this. -

Has anyone installed BIOS E16Q2IMS.10C released July 6th? If so, any issues? Does it make the fans run louder / more often?

Ah, I've read 150 pages of posts (lol) trying to figure out much as other have, which would be the best new laptop for me. I'm quite begrudgingly am moving on from my 2011 MacBook Pro with discrete graphics. I've accepted that nothing is going to come out that will give me what I want, even using Bootcamp to play the non Mac-friendly games. But gosh darn it, build quality and longevity is killing me as I try to make the switch. I previously bought a Gigabyte 970m laptop when that was a thing, but I couldn't take it (particularly the touchpad coming from Macbooks) and gave it to my brother in law.
This past weekend I got a bee in my bonnet and thought I was going to buy the GS65 Thin from Best Buy... but it pained me that even resting my wrists on my notebook to test out how I would feel typing with that keyboard, it creaked. Bad. I mean I literally grabbed the shelf the laptop was on to make sure it wasn't the shelf creaking. Then grabbed the behemoth laptops on either side so see if they made the noise. Nope, it was just the GS65. It pained me to think of spending that much for something with noises just from resting my the heels of my hands down while typing.
I'm now back to the drawing board... The Razor 15 had a very nice solid feel, but the stories of their poor QA scare me. The 15X V8 sounds nice, but I am shy about buying something I've never touched in person before. I'm a road warrior type so I need something I can feel comfortable will survive flying, airports, hotels and bumps. -
Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find it. Could someone with the GS65 that has the 512GB NVME SSD please check and post here the make and model number of the SSD? Thank you.
