So I recently updated my BIOS to the latest version 2019-11-01 version and couldn't get the CPU Flex Ratio lower than 22. I was able to change it in the line but when you click out of it it reverts back to 22. Anyone else had this issue? Is it because of latest firmware? If it was does anyone have an older BIOS that they can upload or point out where to get?

It's not for you then since you posted 11-01 which came from 9th gen. The correct BIOS should be E16Q2IMS.112 (Released on 8.23.2019).

Just checked the first one you mentioned and in it has support for my model the GS65 Stealth 8SF. The other two you linked did not have that model support.

When you go to the product page it's listed there : https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GS65-Stealth-8SX/Specification

Also this i the BIOS I installed: https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GS65-Stealth-8SF

Gotcha, their website is a little confusing, so you have MS-16Q4, and your current version is 116. You can definitely revert to 112. Please see and compare both links below. :)

I did put on the 112 and still the same issue. Not able to lower or raise at all. Co stantly stuck on 22. Now it's making me wonder if I was even able to do it on the older BIOS firmware.

I think at this point they use a mix of nvme they can get from different suppliers. Unless it's like gigabyte that claims certain things like IPS displays from LG and memory from SAMSUNG etc. I've had nvme from toshiba in my gs65 2070 and kingston in the gs63vr 1070 so it depends on what they have in stock I think.

    Hi,

I had this issue as well and the solution was to flash the original bios: E16Q4IMS.107
Check this post and a few of my posts before on that thread for more detais:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...advanced-version.823065/page-30#post-10957699

However, I'm currently getting this error in event viewer:
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0x74), which lies in the 0x74 - 0x76 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.
Which, I believe, is causing battery drain.

However, this also leads me to believe that there is a reason for all these bios updates and that I might be generating bios errors by using the old one. There might be a balance to be made between flex ratio and ACPI Bios errors keeping the os awake

It's always recommended to update to the latest and greatest unless you have a special purpose with the older version.
Newer version definitely includes bug fixes, security patches, and feature enhancement.

What about potential performance decreases as new intel mitigations are put into the bios?

I've stayed on the stock bios precisely due to that.

Update to my earlier Display port issue. Updated the nvidia driver a couple of weeks ago. DP seemed to be working fine for a while, then it just recently started disconnecting randomly again. In addition, I blue screened for the first time earlier today with a nvlddmkm.sys error.

Am now trying HDMI to 100% rule out the DP cable, will give this a couple of days before going further with drivers and a potential windows reinstall.

Gotta say that security is more important than anything else.
Also, the mitigation has been improved several times so it should not reduce performance that much.

Yup flashed to original BIOS and worked for me. Now I can set it below 22 and no longer locked to that. Wonder if future updates will allow changes again but I totally understand that newer BIOS has security and bug fixes but honestly for me this laptop has been serving one purpose and one purpose only, portable gaming station. Most of the time I leave it turned off in another room and use it only when the wife is sleeping or when I go on business trips. Also bought a razer blade advanced 15 with a 240hz that I got a steal on (2600 retail down to 1400) so going to be testing that out some more once I get the upgrades I need today. (Fujipoly, 64gb RAM, 2TB nvme).

Bestbuy! They had an open box in excellent condition marked as 2027.99. Bout it online for store pickup so I could save some more cash with cashback site. Went to the store and realized it wasn't in excellent condition, aka no box. Manager wanted to get rid of it so gave me another 618 off. so out the door at 1410. Also when upgrading I noticed the previous owner had taken out the nvme since the protective sticker on the nvme screw was punctured. Unless it comes punctured not sure.

I'll address this in two parts. First, your scores are "ok" for the stock 80 watt Vbios and Intel 8750H. I'm #3 in Firestrike and can assure you that higher scores are possible, take quite a bit of tweaking, and really isnt worth the effort for every day use.

Second, your GPU average frequency and temps are never going to be drastically different during these benchmarks A: because the standardized graphical settings for 3dMarks 1080p tests use don't push the gpu that hard. B: nVidia locks down all of the good gpu settings. All you can do is undervolt, which is what Afterburner is doing when you "OC" and C: notebook gpus are kept cool by severely limiting the amount of power it can use compared to the desktop counterparts. You will always bounce off either the power limit, voltage limit, or both.

I have a 8750H/2070 P65 (nearly the same laptop) and was wondering if anyone has found a smaller power brick? The stock 230W is a little large for daily carry. I do my heavy gaming at home and only use it for email/internet and some CAD when I'm out and about so I think I could get by with a lower wattage charger.

Has anyone replaced their LCD? Curious as to how difficult the process is, the narrow bezels seem fragile.

Guess that's my biggest concern, how is the LCD held in place? I've replaced many LCD's in the past, but they're usually held in place with screws but I'm guessing these narrow bezel laptops don't have those metal tabs that get screwed into the frame. If it's some sort of strong adhesive, I'd likely break the current screen trying to remove it. Just out of boredom I wanted to order one of the Lenovo Legion 500nit screens and see if it works.

    Hello everyone,

    Happy new year !

I am new on this forum, I read a lot of things about improving GS65 (this computer has a huge potential) Today I am totally confused on what to do and what don’t.

I am the owner of a GS65 9SE (RTX2060, i7 9750h), as most of gs65 owner with factory configuration, I get issues with Temp, PL limitations, speed steps min values, autonomy of battery and fan speed (fan 1 don’t go below 2750rpm).

I repaste my laptop with noctua NH2 and got better temp, undervolt to -160 with throttlestop and obtained an increase of 500hz.

I am still facing issues regarding PL limitation, battery (2h initially now 4h, witch is still far away from the 8h of the spec), min frequency values. I also want to fine tune my computer to improve the performance. I want to focus on two different profiles :

    - max performances when plugged (expect to reach 3.8ghz stable

    - max endurance on battery (expect to reach 7-8h with cpu freq and fan speed lows)

I am not a gamer, I use and bought this computer to work at home with multiple screens using software needing CPU performance and be able to go for meetings without having to plug it for half a day doing basic stuff (writing, web surfing...)

I saw some of you (like @ somejoshdude) having incredible improvements, lots of tweaks are for 8th gen i7 and I don’t know if it can be applied to 9th gen.

It seems that you have a very good understanding of this laptop now, since last January. Can we try to make a checklist with instructions on how to tune the gs65 i7 9th gen? (Repaste procedure , BIOS mod (if any needed finally) throttlestop tweaks, win10 tweaks, use of other tools.

Thank you, I think that might help a lot of guys who just bought this computer during the BB sales ;-)

Good on you for repasting...this helps alot...also swapping pads for better ones helps...but paste is key...best results ive seen are with LM but im not brave enough to go that route and if ur moving alot id say steer away...Fan speed does not go below that...ive tried and no way, u can always tweak TS and fan profiles so its off completely til say 50-52 degrees which is where i have mine set to as i doesnt heat up that much during regular web/email/document use, Pl1 45w limit can be bypassed with imon slope bios settings have not tried and honestly dont know if its worth it....same bios tweaks apply from 8750h to 9750h so id try that, read up and see which ones are best for u...they definitely do help a bunch...also with TS i got mine to 6-7 hours battery life so u can too. Your mileage will vary though but id ssay give it a try

Hye guys, quick question whats the normal wear level on a batetry mine is at 8% and system is a month old and i just calibrated it today....i know most laptops dont really use 100% of the whole battery cause there's room for manufacturing tolerances in the battery but 8% seems a bit much doesnt it? its holding up ok and all just saw that on hwinfo and thought id ask...do i need to call msi or take in to bestbuy so they order a new battery? I was gonna order one to have a spare if i ever needed one but seems a bit odd thats all..even my new MBP16 has a 4% difference between advertised capacity and actual capacity it can hold and its a week old so im just asking

Update: After a while plaing and a 2 reboots HWINFO says wear level 0% so theres that!!

Under stress testing how do i remove the EDP other limit in TS? PL1 is always there but i assume thats with the imon slope tweak.....under combined stress i can sustain 3.9 for a minute or two but itll thermal throttle....to 3.6 there temps are betwe78-82 for all cores also on TS i run 2 times the cpu core voltage offset less than cache say cache will be -50mv and cpu core -100 this ok? I can game just fine for hours at 3.6-3.7 at 73-77 degrees on cpu

Edp other is fixed by dropping iGPU clock to 1050. Number might be off but it's 50 minus top frequency.

    Gs65 se8 -

-155mV on cpu and cache in throttlestop, gave me max 92c in apex.

(Updated EC and bios + reset ec then cleared cmos, same result)

With ac/dc 1/1 and -50mV in bios (overclocking menu) gives me max 82c in apex.
Also it seems I can go further with the offset (at -50mV everything is rock solid, LinX, no bsod...)

    Does this seem normal?

Edit: -100mV insta bsod in windows, -75mV seems stable and is giving max 80c in apex.
Testing -85mV now.. Finally temps that I keep seeing all around.

This is done with BIOS unlock key combo, it's located in the same subdirectory where the manual BIOS UV setting are except you choose GPU rather than CPU.

Yeah ofc, I can keep 3.9GHz and maintain sub 90 temps in the right conditions.

    Aircon, back elevated, etc.

You must likely won't. I found 3.6 was 1 or 2 frames lower than 3.9 GHz and about 5 to 8 degrees cooler.

    Hello,
sorry not giving news, I was away. Based on your suggestion I did some progress…
1st and not least, I reinstall Silent option and I can now enjoy the great silence while working ! so, thank you !
I change the way I was undervolting the computer, I did apply the AC/DC mod in the BIOS, as a result I undervolt in TS to -58.6mV (-160mv before) when I am benching the computer at high frequency and load, and I surprisingly get a -130mV (-160mv) when on battery with a frequency of 2.0GHz on all cores ! I didn't get time to see, but it seems that mod has a nice impact on my battery autonomy. As well on Nvidia controlpanel I put intel graphic card by default instead of the RTX, which increase the battery too.
I saw that even if I repasted the laptop, compare to your results, my températures are not that good. Reaching 95°c full load ! I bought Fujipoly thermal pads and I will repaste this weekend.
attached two screen shots, one plugged full load reaching 3.6GHz and 95°c, second one full load on battery at 2GHz.
I tryed to apply the tweak to unlock the Ratio below 26, but it is not working. I went to the BIOS (version 116) enable the fonction type 8 but 26 stay remind when I press enter :-(
How I can I get this fixed ? the consequence is that each time i am umplugging my computer I need to go to Turbo Power Limits and set the max speed shift to 20 otherwise it keep the 26 mini setted in FIVR.
Second question, I remove dragon center, so now, How can I do battery management to get it not charge full but up to 80% or 60% ?
    thank you for your advises.
