I just used it to read the VBIOS. I think we still need signed VBIOS to flash successfully.

I ordered an MSI GS65 with i7 9750h and rtx 2070 max-q today and I am already worried about the temperatures. Is there anything else I can do besides undervolting the cpu to decrease my core temps? I don't want to do a thermal repaste since the motherboard is upside down and it would void my warranty.

It shouldn't throttle at stock though it will hover in the 90°C range under load (which is perfectly acceptable to me). Expect a 5°C+ drop with an undervolt.

You can also limit the maximum all core boost to 3.5Ghz instead of 4ghz.

Lima, I've been reading your posts on your vBIOS changes your GS65 8SE. I'm wondering if you've found one that gives your 90w but that doesn't disable the miniDP? I use my miniDP so having it disabled isn't feasible for me.

Also, I overclock my GPU so that my core is 1115, do you think that would be approximate the same effect as a 90w vBIOS that gives a base core of 1110?

If you would like to try I have the RB 15 VBIOS which has a mDP 1.4 same as ours. You can attempt to flash and report back.

No, + memory wont make up for the increased TDP provided by the 90W VBIOS

Sure why not. Is it the same one at the Razer vBIOS on techpowerup? Have you tried it and it works well?

I have not tried, I want to but currently my wife uses my laptop for work and we can’t afford (literally) to leave her without a laptop.

As soon as she gets a new one I will go back to tweaking my GS65.

I did not use the tech power up one, I have 2 VBIOS from Razer users (RB15 the white version and RB 17 Pro). They have the same TDPs.

I haven’t tested any other VBIOS besides de ASUS STRIX II.

No, it needs to be digitally signed by NVIDIA I believe. And unsure if you can use hardware to adjust it .

Only thing to look forward to is some RTX 2060 with a TDP of 100W*+

Or maybe desktop variant but not sure I want to risk flashing those since TDP is 180W.

I'm wondering if its even worth the risk of flashing to that Razer vBIOS for what will probably be only a few FPS in games. Part of me sort of regrets getting a gaming laptop and not just getting a desktop. Ah well, such is life.

It's a nice improvement, like 1000 points in FS, sadly I don't have a before or after for games. If I decide to reflash I'll post some FFXV before and after.

I have FS scores. It junk I posted in this thread or the other gs65 thread.

Yeah I saw your previous posts in both threads, thanks for posting all that stuff. I like the benchmarks but I'm most interested in gaming experience. I looked at your firestrike scores when you first flashed your bios and it was 17,000 or so, with FPS of about 6fps higher than what I get. So that's what got me thinking it might not net me much so why risk it. If it was say 20fps, that's a different story. haha

Okay so i think i understand most of vBios flashing now. the guide is clear about everything but one thing.

Does device ID have to be matching to be possible to flash? or does that not matter?
Basically all bioses with 1F10 are limited to either 80W or 90W and 1F50 are limited to 110W. Mine is a 1F10. Just wondering if that matters or its just a bios "ID"?

Where did you find a 110W? Rtx 2060?

Um I didn't bother with IDs, not sure if I should have and just got Lucky I didn't brick it.

    Hi guys.

I'm interested in getting the GS65 with 1660ti. I watched this review
and I have a few concerns.

Basically the reviewer says that he doesn't recommend the laptop because it gets hot even when doing basic tasks like web browsing. Can anyone confirm if this is true? I was under the impression that the 2019 version of the gs65 had better cooling and the overheating and fan noise wouldn't be a problem when just doing basic stuff.

All systems can get hot when it's under load, and CPU temperature varies depending on the loading. There are many reviews on GS65 therefore it would help you if you check those out too.
The system can get hotter when both CPU and GPU are used.

Interested in this as well as it also appears to be for the bestbuy model/8SE . . . I thought the R-0 stepping is mainly for the 9th gen intel cpu's but the bios/EC notes also states "improve performance" in general as well . . . has anyone tried?

    GS65 RTX2070 keyboard backlight not working!!! :( :( :(
When I press fn, some of the buttons eg F2, F3, home button, PGUP etc lights up red.

When I press fn+Steelseries button (Home button), the laptop recognizes I have done that, but my keyboard lighting still doesnt work, no light at all. Last time this happened I uninstalled the steelseries engine and that worked. but I tried it this time but it didnt work. I tried activating my keyboard lighting with the steel series engine, but nothing happens. What does happen though when I press fn+steelseries button (home button), is that on the steelseries engine app, it says that the keyboard lighting pattern has changed, but theres no light coming from my keyboard at all.

It's highly unlikely that my LEDs are broken as when I press fn, some buttons light up.

There should be a key combination (Fn + something) that raises and lowers the brightness of the keyboard. Turning it all the way down completely switches them off. Just find that key (it's printed on the keycaps) and turn it on.

You can try updating the intel drivers as well. Also make sure whatever software you are running in your taskbar is not using the dGPU, like monitoring software, and any launchers like steam should launch using the igpu etc.

I have been avoiding EC firmware update since the recent one changes the fan minimum speed to 3000rpm, wherein the old EC minimum fan speed is 2000 rpm. Anybody tried this latest one to see if the fan minimum speed is still 3000rpm?

    I try:

    Bios Update
    EC Firmware Update
Delete drivers with DDU in Safe Mode + Fresh intel drivers + nvidia drivers in airplane mode

I only have Disabled the ASPM in the BIOS
I see this unknow device that I cant put drivers to see whath is this! I try Intel chipset drivers, scm control, etc.
Im not using Dragon Center, only SMC and Silent Options

And I see my notebook led always orange even when I power up the machine and boot the led is orange. This is maybe the issue?

Not sure if that's the issue but you shouldn't have unknown devices. Try clicking in "Detalles" and select the option that closely resembles Hardware ID. Use one of the hardware IDs that appear and copy paste it to google to get an idea of what device it is and what drivers you might be missing.

What software do you run normally in the taskbar?

Thanks! The device id google find shows: nvidia usbc driver (I dont install this). So I make a new clean up with DDU and install the drivers with the usbc and the problem is solved!

Been meaning to get a new laptop to replace my now half decade old GS70 Stealth-037 and with one of my family members recently in urgent need of a replacement laptop, it gave me the perfect chance to finally pull the trigger on the GS65 which I had been eyeing ever since this new chassis debuted.

I had actually been debating between the GS65, Aero 15, and Razer Blade 15. The Razer was knocked out of the running early with the lack of an ethernet port and being significantly more expensive. The Aero 15 and GS65 were very similar price and features wise. While I liked that the Aero 15 had a number pad, the design just couldn't compare to the Stealth Thin which is one beautiful laptop with those sexy subtle gold accents.

After holding off multiple times with more and more new CPU/GPUs being announced one after the other, I felt like it was time now that the 9th Gen Intel chips were out there along with the RTX cards. In the end I still decided to go with the 8th Gen cpu over the 9th due to the i7 being only an incremental increase and the 8th gen being on sale. With the discount, it allowed me to get the 2080 MaxQ model over the 2070 MaxQ which I had originally planned and it still turned out cheaper than a similarly spec'd 9th Gen CPU and RTX 2070 MaxQ.

Early on, I had decided to go with a reseller since looking at reviews, all the thin and light laptops seem to run really hot and I wanted to have a professional repaste it. Decided to go with HiDevolution after looking around and seeing how highly regarded they were. Shot them an email and @Ted@HIDevolution responded promptly. He was very helpful throughout the purchasing process providing information, offerring alternatives, and giving pros and cons of the GS65.

Can't wait to finally get my hands on this and check it out after reading/watching reviews of it for the past 2 years. Will update the post once I recieve it.

For those interested. Source: Reddit u/FatherofaMonster

    Code:
the 15.6 Razer Blade dbrand worked out great! The width is perfect and the length needed just a slight trim. I should have bought a sheet trimmer but I was impatient and used scissors. I highly recommend you get a sheet cutter. I eyeballed it and used scissors so I cut just a little too much. I've included pictures so that you can see the end result and I've included how much I cut. You need to cut only half of that. I was sloppy but I really just needed something to protect the lid. It hardly leaves the house but I always find myself brushing up against something else that's metal on the lid and just wanted to prevent scratches.

Anyone else experience issues with the 2nd slot on the GS65?

I have an OEM WD NVMe in slot 1. Bought an 1tb NVMe ADATA XPG8200 Pro and placed in slot 2.

Boots detects everything. BUT if a crash and reboot it won't go past the MSI logo screen until I remove the drive.

I looked on Google but didn't find much of anything (other than the whole sata / NVMe slot 1 and 2 issues we see every other day) I did find 1 user who has the same issue with an NVMe drive.

Edit: was not crucial mx500 as this is a Sata drive, will try and find right model used.

    @Donald@HIDevolution

    @Kevin@GenTechPC

Or anyone else experience any compatibility issues between NVMe vendors? I would hope it's not something RMA worthy. I would probably just stick to 1 drive if that's the case and avoid the hassle.

I had a HP ex900 installed in the empty slot and same thing happened. I switched it out and replaced with Samsung (forgot the model # Evo 950?) And it worked. The ex900 was transferred to my Razer and it works fine

Thanks for the info! Will just save up another $100 and grab a 970 Evo plus.

Maybe it has something to do with the controllers (I know the ADATA uses silicon motion, will check what the crucial and HP use, maybe that's the link.)

Also did swapping slots or make the ex900 boot drive do anything?

I actually didn't move the original drive. I just popped it in and change the boot order in the BIOS to boot of the new drive. Since then I upgraded to microcenter's premium SSD as boot drive. Still have the original drive in it's original slot.

When you use the NVSlimmer App wich are the critical items to keep?
Can I delete the NVIDIA HD Audio and install only the Core Funcionality?

All you need is core + USB C and NGIX/nvcore or something like that in the event it does up.

I had the exact same issue too where it refused to boot with a XPG SX8200 (ASX8200NP-480GT-C). It will refuse to go past MSI logo or at times, it does not even show the MSI logo.

I was panicking then as I just bought the notebook and perform the thermal repaste + SSD upgrade + RAM upgrade. Ended up reopening my heatsink twice (thinking i damaged the gpu or gpu or unseat something), RAM swaps, BIOS resets until i found out it was the the SSD. Swapped with a Samsung and everything was fine.

Hopefully this helps others from going down this route.

Out of curiosity @hackness or anyone else who's flashed their vbios

By flashing the 90W vbios to the 2070 of my GS65, would there be any more wear on the chip that could be noticeable? A shorter service life maybe? As in, are Razer or Asus (Maybe Alienware I think they have a 90W 2070) designed differently to compensate for the 10W increase and would my MSI suffer from not having that?

    Thank you

Urrm, the answer is actually quite tricky. You see, the power is given through a DC-DC converter inside the motherboard. All laptops have a designed power specification for each module in the motherboard (and its cost optimized, I'm guessing). If the circuits are indeed cost optimized, there is a decent probability of high THD (Total harmonic distortion) when you push the power envelope. Harmonics are rather dangerous for circuits. Beyond a certain level, they can start affecting the circuitry of not only the Chips, but also other modules of the motherboard if the isolation is not done well.

Notice, that there were a lot of 'if's in the previous paragraph. So, in short, If the Power converter and delivery circuitry are capable enough, then there should be no problem.

Thanks for this, I will be more inclined to post issues like this, even if I seem to be the only one.

Had I found posts like this I would not have spent sooo much time troubleshooting.

I will compile a list of PCIe storage models and their controllers as people continue to post and maybe we can identify a common link.

I wonder if this issue is specific to the XPG firmware? I have a microcenter inland premium NVME SSD in slot 2 (?same controller as the XPG drive) and the OEM NVME SSD in slot 1 with the boot drive changed to slot 2 in the bios . . . . this works fine....
