Hello everyone thanks for all the information here.
Got a GS65 8SF Thin, 2070, 32gb ram, 512gb m.2 recently.
Taken quite a bit to get it going proper but nearly there.
My main query in signing up here is the harddrive it came with. It is the kingston, not the samsung, of which the benchmarks are nearly half of the samsung 8SF users, see this screenshot from in passmark. Mine is the second down, at 11966, vs the Samsung 8SF users also with 2070's getting avg 22k.

I hear it was a thing with the XPS.15's also, when they ran out of samsungs they put kingstons in that performed in similar comparison, many complained about it. I searched and haven't found any mention of this from other GS65 user's yet.
What can any of you say about this?
Thanks!!
Edit: I found around page 55 some people referencing best buy version having the kingstons. I am in Canada, got it from Canada Computers. Found it worked out to be cheaper than ordering from USA with the exchange rate, perhaps that is why it was cheaper and one way they make for them to be not as overpriced with the current exchange rate for us Canadians...

I even used NVslimmer on that dch driver package. -
Crap, I just finished setting this machine up, I just so do not feel like reinstalling this again, 2x2TB drives almost full. -
If nothing helps... maybe you have some kind of an hardware defect? I've never heard of a dgpu getting warm until it gets used...Thysanoptera likes this. -

A heads up best buy has their rtx2060 model (bigger SSD, non-killer AC) on sale for $1399

Picking up two of these in a while for 1399.. What an absolute steal.
-
Grabbed two of these from Best Buy and comparing the two for Quality Control ,etc..
First off, panel lottery.. One has a BOE panel and the other is AOU (from last year's model). The BOE has PWM dimming but has faster response time.. Both look nearly identical panel wise.
Really good to zero backlight bleed on either panel as well.. this is impressive.
Otherwise, both units are 100% in fan noise.. sound identically the same (I mention this because the older GS63's could be hit or miss on fan noise per unit). -
Hey can any of you guys with the 2060 version give some insight into FPS on PUBG.
I used to play on my old Helios 300 with a 1060 and get around 70-80fps on low/med.
I installed it on my GS65 yday and with the same settings as previously im only getting 70 max.
Have no idea whats going on. Maybe the single channel ram? -

Confirming from my own experience as well that dual channel RAM makes a huge difference in some applications/games.

Installed the new bios and ec, ran some passmark tests. Looking promising.
Keep in mind I'm fairly new to this.
The 1st I ran when the laptop was more fresh, may have had the -125mv enabled but that was likely it.
The 2nd and 3rd are after bios update.
2nd as the writing says is 128mhz OC on afterburner, -125mv cpu, -60cache, and 35 TL on 5/6 cores.
3rd I turned all of that off so its running straight.
I have it on a cooling pad for 2nd and 3rd also, seems this laptop really needs that when your gaming or pushing it.
Reason for -125mv is I was finding it kept the temps a degree or two cooler than just -49 from JRey's blog. Saw in the other GS65 thread people going higher than that too but saw 125 recomended a few times.
What I ultimately finally realized after a lot of playing around with this stuff is, setting the TL to 35 on 5/6 cores gives the biggest shift. Because the initial boost to 55W before it throttles down to 45W doesn't provide a significant difference in TS Bench's.
But if I have my 5/6 core TL at 35 then the temp never goes above 83 and after running 1024m tests it is only a 2% loss in performance time.
Barely a trade off for preventing both temp and power throttles from ever happening...
It does bring up the thought though that limiting the power draw to 45w instead of the TL might be the better way to manage it?
Is this what TDP Level Control or Intel Power Balance in the TPL button is for? Any advice?
Here is the cpu mark and 3dmark.

Is there a way to lock CPU turbo to 35-36x in bios, so I wouldn't need TS?

Hey everyone, I just bought this laptop at bestbuy during the 1400 buck sale. I am looking to add a nvme drive and while I am in there possibly adding a second memory stick. I noticed my battery life was only showing 2-3 hours and digging into it found out steam updater was using my 2060 keeping it powered on. After forcing it to use integrated graphics it jumped up to around 6 hours... just in case anyone else has that issue.

To limit the multiplier, go to Advanced > Power & Performance > CPU - Power Management Control > View/Configure Turbo Options
Set 1-Core Ration Limit Overrider to your desired multiplier.
Set 2-Core Ration Limit Overrider to your desired multiplier.
Set 3-Core Ration Limit Overrider to your desired multiplier.
Set 4-Core Ration Limit Overrider to your desired multiplier.
Set 5-Core Ration Limit Overrider to your desired multiplier.
Set 6-Core Ration Limit Overrider to your desired multiplier.
Save and exit the BIOS.Michael A. Saldana likes this. -
Hi there,
Signed up to say thanks for all of the tips here. So far I've repasted cpu/gpu, installed dual channel memory (2x8 @ 2666), applied bios tweaks, throttlestop to lower 6 core multiplier to 37, uninstalled dragon center and applied OC via afterburner (custom curve). I also flashed the 90w bios to gain as much performance as possible, these are my results so far:

Not as high as @xLima but I'm pretty happy with it. GPU Temps while running firestrike usually cap at 76 for GPU and 86 for CPU (28 celsius room temp). While gaming CPU goes up to 82 and CPU stays at 86 tops. -
Disabling that may net you a higher score. It's in the PEG:0 subheading.

Is it me or did MSI gimp the 2060 in this machine severely? It never reaches past about 1300mhz average clocks... that’s literally what a MaxQ version would be like if there was one.. my buddy’s GS63 with 1060 literally pulls nearly the same performance as the 2060.
-
Last time when I've been checking it while playing Division 2 it was like 1500-1600MHz or so, but definitelly not locked to 1300MHz.
What's your firestrike/timespy score? New drivers? Fresh OS install? -
Time Spy I just got a 5745 total score with a 5653 graphics score.
Firestrike Standard is 13421 and 14737 graphics score. -
My GS65 with a 1070 max-q hits 1708MHz

Hello, this forum was very usefull to me for setting my GS65 8SE laptop, and now i want to share my personal settings:
My first target was to play without fans noise, so i uninstalled Dragon Center and installed MSI Silent Option (base profile with fan velocity set to minimum) and MSI Afterburner.
I didn't use Throttlestop because i prefer to set the CPU in the bios and i don't want too many programs running in background.
CPU tuning:
I followed Falkentyne's instructions ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...stealth-owners-and-discussions-lounge.815216/) up to point 4 to prevent CPU overvolting.
Then, in bios settings, i set the first 4 cores to 36X and the last 2 to 22X.
GPU tuning:
I used the "OC Scan" MSI utility to auto overclock the 2060.
At the end of the scan, Afterburner has set the core to [email protected].
The strange thing is that the voltage curve shows 2025MhZ maximum core speed, but the graphs during benchmarks shows 1700MhZ maximum core frequency.
I didn't overclocked the RAM because i noticed that (in games and benchmarks) the performance deteriorates.
Windows settings:
Power plan set to balanced.
Results:
- Time Spy: 5683 (6028 graphics score and 4294 CPU score)
- Shadow of the Tomb Raider (1080p Ultra settings + Ray Tracing to medium): 51fps
- Assassin Creed Odyssey (1080p Ultra settings): 46fps
CPU max temperature: 66°
Fans practically silent.
---i also tested games and benchmarks using 39-39-38-38-37-37 multiplier ratio on CPU cores. Time Spy reached a score of 6000, but games results are the same with a termal increase of +25° on CPU. Useless---Last edited: Apr 23, 2019 -
Hello all,
New owner of GS65 8SE here.
When upgrading the Bios/EC, is it better to do one before the other or does the order of upgrading matter?
Also, it seems that alot of people are uninstalling Dragon Center on these laptops--what is the main reason for this. Any other MSI software that most people uninstall?
Thanks in advance,

Has anyone had a sudden drop in gaming performance in their laptops lately?
I usually run my 2060 capped to 70W and 8750h capped to 2.1GHz for the sake of cooler temps. I've always gotten a healthy 80FPS in both BF-V and DotA 2 (both at ultra) with it. However, today, when I tried playing with the same settings, my FPS were all over the place. I tried killing all apps, antiviruses and even restarting, but the problems persisted. The only way to get the performance numbers back were to let the CPU turbo normally to 3.9GHz all cores. I even ran benchmarks to see if anything was wrong, but every single benchmark gave me my highest scores ever on this machine.
Any clue what may be wrong?
Since this seems to be a CPU specific issue, do you happen to have any ideas @hackness ? -

Doh this is a vBios! Never mind lol -
Were you using speed shift? If you did, what EPP did you set to?
Was Core parking enabled or disabled?
Was the NVIDIA driver updated just recently?
