The issue with optimus lies with high refresh rate mostly, not so much as "max performance". It seems the iGPU becomes a bottleneck in some games were you want to exceed 144-200fps with the internal display. Games that are already taxing and under 144fps should be "fine" and it doesn't really affect scores as far as I know.
So it's mostly an issue of running games on low settings, uncapped, trying to reach massive fps, that's where the iGPU chokes the performance.

Out of the blue, the Battery Health option in Dragon Center isn't working anymore, and the laptop charges to 100%. Any idea on how to fix this, or how to manually limit the maximum charge to 80% (to preserve the lifespan of the battery)?
I've already updated Dragon Center to the newest version, but that didn't do the trick. -

Hi, Just wondering if the 3rd M.2 Sata slot can use a m.2 NVME at Sata speeds or do I need to buy a m.2 Sata card. Those are not so common these days.

Also, I would like to just have 2 512GB with one as system drive instead of RAID 0. Does MSI usually configure it as RAID 0 like your system? -
I went for the WD blue as it gave me the best $ to GB ratio without sacrificing longevity or going for sketchy brands. And yes, it is possible to have only one drive as the system drive and another as storage. You'll have to reinstall Windows though as it comes raided. I can't remember the specifics but you'll have to disable raid in the BIOS before you reinstall windows for it to detect them as two separate drives.Last edited: Oct 10, 2019Macpod likes this. -
Heyas folks!
Proud new owner of a MSI GS75 9SG!! And man am I happy, been wanting a stealth for a few years now and finally had an opportunity when I gave my old Sager to a nephew. I have a pretty good desktop, but wanted something I could easily fire up when I don’t have access to desktop and work travel. My setup is a tad overkill for my needs, but it’ll help hold me over until a desktop upgrade.
So now that I have this thing, besides tossing games at it, what should I do first? I did slightly undervolt via ThrottleStop and I saw a nice 10-15c temp reduction on CPU. Fans are still fairly loud which seems normal. However, what else can I do to help performance, fan noise, bios update (how??) etc? Should I delete dragon center or other MSI apps? I probably will repaste once I have time but that’ll be a few weeks to months from now. I did update a ton of drivers: sound, nvidia, Intel chipset, etc.
Thanks for yen help!!!

This guide is also very useful for increasing battery life.

Once you repaste, I'd recommend removing the cpu power limit to allow it to boost to 4.0Ghz all core. This along with gpu overclocking gives the largest performance boost by far.
Go to Advanced > Power & Performance > CPU - Power Management Control > CPU VR Settings > Core/IA VR Settings
Set IMON Slope to 50
IMON Offset to 31999
IMON Prefix to "-",Cisco78 likes this. -
Awesome thank you!
How difficult is a repaste in this system? I’ve never worked on a laptop before... the flipped mobo scares me lol

Are most folks going liquid metal or is update thermal paste alright? I hadn’t ever heard of liquid metal until recently haha.

Normal high quality paste will work fine. People who go for liquid metal just want to get the absolute best temps.Cisco78 likes this. -

Ok I’ll take a look at the fan settings, that will most likely help.
I haven’t built or tinkered in ages so trying to remember everything that needs to get done.
Loving the screen by the way... it was primary reason why I chose the GS75, just seemed a tad better than the competition and 4K seemed silly for my needs. I feel like I got very lucky with back light bleed, a few minor spots at bottom but a slight adjustment to screen angle and it’s not noticeable.

Is anyone experiencing wear on the keys already... had mine since first of the year and they are already showing pretty serious signs of wear.
-
So I’ve yet to repaste but man I’m loving this machine! And ironically, my granite counter tops are providing a great cooling solution haha... temperatures are way down when using the laptop on them.

If I put a NVMe SSD in the SATA slot, will it still work (just at lower speeds)?
-
Just wondering if anyone has the i9 9880h version and if it can sustain all core boost with undervolting and cooling pad.
-
1. Power limit
Can be bypassed by using the imon slope tweak that removed the power limit entirely, but now the cpu will run significantly hotter. Which leads to point 2.
2. Temperature limit
Stock paste 100% cause thermal throttling. With aftermarket pastes it may not throttle but will be running in the high 90s. Liquid metal is the best solution and depending on how perfectly you apply it, you will be able to get it to the low 90s or high 80s at max all core boost.
So essentially, you need to repaste, remove power limit and undervolt. An additional cooling pad will drop temps by about 3-5 degrees on the cpu and gpu compared to putting it on a flat surface so you MAY be able to use regular paste rather than liquid metal. -
Cool, it seem the creator P75 has a PL1 of 65w and PL2 of 115, so that should be plenty already. I was hoping with just CPU load it will be able to hit the max boost with stock cooling compound.
Jarrodtech on youtube seem to have the i7 8750 in the low 70s under just cpu load. And that chip was notoriously hot. -
Removing power limit entirely allows it to run at max boost indefinitely.
The i7-8750h on his device was power limit throttled. That's why it only ran at 70°C. With stock paste and no power limit it'll run at 99°C and be thermal throttlingMacpod likes this. -

The best alternative I can think of is to remove power limit first, then dial the max turbo back with Throttlestop to 65w (3.6ghz) and 75w (+-3.7ghz). You'll have to switch between the two manually though. -
Can you send me a link to the power limit removal tool?

Get in the BIOS and unlock the BIOS using the following key combination.
Hold down Left Alt + Right Ctrl + Right Shift and then press F2.
Then go to Advanced > Power & Performance > CPU - Power Management Control > CPU VR Settings > Core/IA VR Settings
Set IMON Slope to 50,
IMON Offset to 31999,
IMON Prefix to "-",
Save and Reboot. -
Awesome, will try that tomorrow. Do you happen to know how i can customize a fan profile? Right now the fan is spinning around 2500rpm at idle which has this buzzing sound. Msi creator center looks good but is not very powerful. Probably the gaming version is better.

What concerns me is the HWinfo wattage info seems to be off. It's always some random small number like 7.25 W while at full load. I'm not sure if the XTU TDP tweaks still work because the HWinfo power readings are off.
This along with the high temps got me concerned so I rested the bios to optimized defaults which seemed to put everything back to some generic settings that's not the original one that came with the computer.
I'm going to download the BIOS off the MSI website and see how that goes. -

Is there somewhere online i can read up on how IMON tweak works with XTU? -
Reading = (IMON Slope x Power draw) - offset
So for the settings I gave you
Reading = (0.5 x Power draw) - 31.999w
So for 65w Power draw
Reading = (0.5 x 65w) - 31.999w
Reading = 0.501w
You can play around with the imon slope and offset to get the exact power limit you want.
Assuming you want a 75w limit, you can keep imon slope at 100 and set the offset to -30w so that the cpu thinks it's drawing 45w when it's actually drawing 75w.Kevin@GenTechPC and Macpod like this. -
EDIT: Having the IMON slope at 100 like you suggested makes working out actual power draw much easier. I wonder why everyone uses .5. Maybe it was the case of one person having used it and the whole internet jumping on the bandwagon. 31999 is also an odd choice.Last edited: Oct 29, 2019 -
That works a treat and im able to turn both fans off even in performance mode with the MSI slient fans.
But I just started getting coil whine. This goes away on superbattery mode. Im not sure what I did to produce this. Any Ideas?Kevin@GenTechPC likes this. -
-
Yeh, undervolted -120. It must be the CPU because when its on battery mode (around 1ghz max) the whine is gone.
Could this be the reason why MSI only allows the fans to be off on battery mode by default? This way if there is battery whine it's either masked by the fans. Or the whine is just not there when the CPU is at 1GHZ. -

Coil whine is coming from PWM, could be the one for either the processor or graphics card.

Regarding the Fans. MSI quite fans allows me to turn the fans off at idle but the software itself uses the Nvidia GPU so I have to shut it down once I get into windows. However the setting seems to stick even if the program is not running. The creator center also seems to be running on Nvidia GPU so I have to shut that down as well.
Unfortunately the Lowest setting for the Fans are around 2500RPM so there is no quite 'Running' option. Either off or loud. -
I think the reason yours whines is because of the i9. It will draw more power than the i7.
Though, if you're brave enough you can upgrade the chokes. I know I would
Used R9 290x cards are pretty cheap nowadays and they used very high quality chokes so you can salvage those for a lot cheaper than buying new high quality ones. -

If i unplug the power the poping sound is gone only a slight whine remains. Is this normal?
The pop kinda sounds like platter hard drives ticking. Not audible if one meter back.Last edited: Oct 30, 2019
