Thanks for your review Phoenix

@Phoenix don't buy an hp printer either... we have one and that thing is horrible despite the fact it was pretty expensive. It's slow as hell, often refuses to scan/copy and the windows 10 pc's lose connection to it here and then. And it is not even on wifi, I think that would have been even worse!

So I ran the Final Fantasy XV Benchmark again and here is my result, I didn't have HWiNFO open at the same time this time just used the previous temp reading and the score went up significantly
Fan Noise on auto fans went up to 74 dB after spinning up

How did you measure the dB?
74 DB would be as loud as a vaccum cleaner, passenger car, hairdryer etc. Not even the garbage cooling of clevo notebooks which are noitorious for being loud as hell can reach that high.UncleMysh likes this. -
Well the bench looks good now but uh... 74dB is louder than max fans P870DM3 which would baffle me to the ends of the universe

Also thanks for the pics, really love seeing that the cooling system remained beastly and they still make that big heatsink for the m2.sata SSDs.Maleko48 and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

Thanks for the review mate
The temperatures are amazing !
I see the heatsink is still the same than the GT73VR's, apart from this :
what is it for ? -
@Jzyftw I have no idea but I found a teardown video of the gt75 (literally, that guy is not gentle with it and... does not repaste at the end after removing the heatsinks >.>) He seems to literally have no idea what he is doing, so not the best video.
But you can see there is some sort of chip underneath it that it appears to help cool at 12:45. Maybe others can help shed light on what it is?GrandesBollas likes this. -
Uh...74dbA?!!!! I absolutely think this is loud. Even with a +/-10% uncertainty of your phone, this is way, way, way too loud for my taste. No wonder you can get so low temperatures.
Do you know what was the background noise?
By the way, did you position your phone receiver right next to the fan, or did you capture the sound where you were sitting? Another thing you could do is try to do a zero calibration to your phone by going in a really, really quiet place and ensure that it does measure zero there.
I copied this matrix from the internet, so people have a better idea of what does 75dbA mean. You can read more here: http://www.industrialnoisecontrol.com/comparative-noise-examples.htm
Noise (dBA) What it feels like
0 healthy hearing threshold
10 a pin dropping
20 rustling leaves
30 whisper
40 babbling brook computer
50 light traffic, refrigerator
60 conversational speech, air conditioner
70 shower, dishwasher
75 toilet flushing, vacuum cleaner
80 alarm clock, garbage disposalLast edited: May 4, 2018 -

@Danishblunt Thanks!
Mid 50s is still too high. I was looking for something in the range of 40db. My Dellware runs on approx. 35dbA and I think that's already too high.
(50+dB is consistent with what was reported in this video as well)
Guys, do you think I should drop all that and go for really powerful desktop with water cooling? My problem is I leave overseas and I like to take my computer with me when I go back home for holidays.Last edited: May 4, 2018 -
To give yuou an example, I have a decently sized USB fan to blow air in sommer so I don't have to deal with high heat when having to work on a project. That thing has is rather loud but due to it being low pitched I don't get annoyed by it in any way, however if I have something much quiter but higher pitched running, It would annoy the living hell out of me.
Also to answer your question, Desktops are ALWAYS more powerful, more silent, have better temperatures, are way more upgradable, have less issues and are cheaper. If you do not need to portability or just switch your position of the PC once a month, it would always be better to get a PC. Notebooks are only useful if you travel a lot or need the performance when going places, in you case it seems that a desktop is much more worth it rather than a notebook-
As far as I can tell your Alienware is already decent as it is, you can play all games on pretty high setings with smooth framerates, so if i were you I'd get a high end PC and use the notebook for holidays. I don't see any reason to buy a notebook given your situation. -

(Pitch = Frequency) You made a great point.
A fan spinning at 3200 rpm would have 3200/60 revolutions per sec (rps). Rps per second is equivalent to Hertz.
Each MSI fan has 29 blades so the fans hit the air at 29 times the base frequency. In this case the frequency would be 29 * 32 or 928 Hz; that's pretty high pitch in my book.
Got to repaste my AW and do the math. I can't recall how many blades each fan has...
I can tell you though that above 2500rps my AW gets annoying.Last edited: May 4, 2018 -

Sorry I forgot to mention when I measured the dB using my iPhone, I had the phone places right next to the fans at the rear of the laptop. How should I place my phone maybe I can do another test
@UncleMysh I don't know why it' such a big deal for you man but I rarely hear the fans spin up during my usage and when they do, they're alright I mean they're not obnoviously loud.
You can't have a silent Ferrari -

@UncleMysh
I just checked the fan noise, well, to start off, the idle noise in the room as shown on the phone app is 60dB, when the fans spin up to max blast, it reaches 68dB at ear level.
I don't think the idle noise is accurate though as it's silent in my room, only the central AC blowing in the background at very low fan speed -
@Phoenix OK if your idle noide is 60dbA indeed you have an issue. Your noise measurements are inaccurate, or you live right in the middle of a highway.
Many thanks for trying though. You are very kind. -

Mind you these fans are whirlwind fans so they generate more air flow than your normal conventional fans at the same RPM -
Wow under gaming load, was playing RE7 demo and the fans do sound like a jet engine which is inline with all the reviews so far. Sadly I have to use headphones and compared to the Eurocom Tornado F5 with 1070 which is a lot quieter but obviously weaker specs...
Any tips to reduce fan noise? -
-
I was getting 81c on CPU and 78c with GPU.
-
Go to dragon center and play around with the fan profiles.
-
I've uninstalled Dragon Center and downloaded Silent Option which I've used on my Eurocom Tornado. It seems anything 70% fan speed and above it's quite loud so I suppose it's expected for the 1080 GPU and 8th Gen CPU.

IIRC 60 is the same level of sound as conversation, not a highway. Still a little loud for some though.Donald@Paladin44, JeanLegi and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
buy some nice beyerdynamics MMX300 and noise is no issue.. they are so good that i can't even hear my wife screaming when my cute GT75VR is doing his work...

Well, I have a fancy headset already with noise canceling and everything, but that's another story...
So these noises were with the stock clocks right? Maybe I have either to downgrade (like go for the 1070 and an 8750H), or underclock it...
Could anyone recommend a more silent configuration? Please do not propose these silent ultra slim books with no breathing space for actual cooling and no serious cooling...Last edited: May 4, 2018 -
@UncleMysh I actually think that ultra slim laptops will be even worse since the smaller fans need to work harder to move enough air. Also I am very sure they will all thermal throttle.
I think there will always be some drawbacks to powerful laptops, the question is: are they acceptable for you?
I was happy with mini jet noise levels on my gt72vr, I was happy with the screen, the speakers, I could live with power throttling gpu.... I knew all that would happen and I was fine with it. Aside from the bd prochot which got me a gt75 in the end so I am kinda happy it was there too!
PS. I would look at notebookcheck reviews, they always measure noise levels. Sadly they haven't reviewed many of the new laptops but if you are not in a hurry with the purchase then you could try waiting for more reviews to pop up.UncleMysh likes this. -
Yes, like I said these ultra books are a joke.
I either go for the 8950HK, so I can downclock it myself or the horrible 8750H, and a 1070 or a downclocked 1080...
Any other suggestions? -
@UncleMysh you actually don't need unlocked cpu for downclocking... if you get one with decent base speed you can just lock the max to that by simply disabling turbo. I had to do that on my overheating asus k55vj (before we repasted it). I swear that thing was a pain, for repaste the whole thing had to be disassembled to bare motherboard. Anyway with turbo off (cpu max to 98% in windows power settings) the temps and noise were reduced substantially.
But why buy a powerful laptop just to... downclock it anyway?UncleMysh likes this. -
Then what is the other option if don't want noise?
-
-
Build a pc. Not what you want to hear though. I really don't know. But do not buy a laptop with the plan of downclocking it, that is the most stupid thing to do. Keep in mind that the laptops are getting very very close to desktop performance - the gpu's are nearly there and the cpu's now with the 6 core ones are pretty much there too. So yeah, how do you expect the small body to handle all the heat? Hell, even desktop i7's are recommended to be watercooled and here you have tiny 3 (in some laptops even 2) heatpipes with tiny fans solution.. It will just be loud to make up for the size.
