Because the battery cannot provide enough juice for gaming on a machine as powerful as this. You would need a low-performance notebook for a dumbed down gaming experience to do that on battery power.

This is normal and expected behavior. Gaming should not be attempted running on battery power on any powerful notebook. The results will be poor and it's not good for the battery. Only do low demand tasks like office productivity, web and email on battery.

Woooow 780W adapter (first time i heard of it)? I was starting to believe that 350W PSU will be sufficient for regular desktops these days ... GTX 1080+ 7700k and bam you talking of 800W PSU for a laptop o_O
Is this one piece or two piece like the 2x330W?
I watched your video on the power usage of 7700k + GTX 1080sli OC ... awesome. Curious what will be the power usage of OC Tornado F5 with GTX 1080.

P.S. I have the 330W adapter and i think it is HUGE :) But still it is perfect for occasional mobility.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the video. :D

Yes, the 780W AC adapter is for the 1080 SLI machine. The dual 330W setup works nice, but this should be a lot more convenient, with less clutter. The 780W adapter is almost the same size as just one 330W.

Power draw will be tested on the Tornado F5. I will include that in my review, along with everything else.

Modded firmware? I like the sound of that. Voltage control and multipliers via BIOS please!

I am anticipating having everything unlocked. I certainly hope so.

I am hoping to see 7700K CPU performance results like I have on the P870DM3.

Last night i tested the 309 bios from Eurocom ...i don't see what is changed apart from the logo.
Adresses 50h-57h (RAM modules) are still locked so i cannot play with memory timings and speeds...
And i still have annoying TDP throttling after approximately 10-12 seconds although i use TS/XTU to override the 8 sec default.

Will be happy if you share after testing how we can obtain a copy of the modded bios.

Do you have a video of the crash? I am curious if it is the same type I experienced in the past.

I used to get crashes, regardless of temperature and driver on certain games (BF1, Black Ops 3, Gears of War 4), but then magically the crashes went away. So what changed? The only thing I can think of is thermal pad placement. During one of my repastes, I took the time to carefully place all of the thermal pads ensuring coverage over the VRM and VRAM modules. I only recently realized that I haven't had a single crash since that repaste.

Are the thermal pads already there on the video card or do I have to buy them separate?

They should already be on the card, but could possibly be misplaced during assembly (e.g. covering only half of the VRAM module surface). Keep in mind, that was just my speculation, since I do not have absolute certainty what caused the crashes.

This was designed for the P870DM3 (and it's other models by Sager, Eurocom, etc.). It is an LGA (6th Gen/7th gen CPU), 1080 SLI machine by Clevo, and can require a boatload of power once the GPUs/CPU are overclocked. TBH, I cannot recall if 660W limit of a dual linked PSU system was reached, but it was definitely getting close.

Now that @Mr. Fox is getting the F5 R2 Extreme Edition, you guys are going to be blown away. The goal is, can we get to 20K overall score. That's the target to hit. I hope to push Mr. Fox and I know he's going to push me. This is going to be an interesting couple of weeks. You guys are in for a treat!

So I am still waiting for my F5 to come in but currently I have last years model BGA MSI whitebook. This had happened before because Steel series is not supposed to work on these laptops (MSI doesn't sell the licensing with these which is why they are cheaper) They can update their config file to force things not to work. You can install KLM separate. I know CyberpowerPC has it on their website, I don't have a link for it right now though.

When I get mine I will look into decompiling steel series and seeing if I can get it to work, I have done it before for a fangbook but it's been a while and I mainly deal with assembly now so I may be rusty :)

The docking station sits under my 27 inch monitor. The Thunderbolt 3 cable is pretty short, so it limits how far the dock can be from the port. The Thunderbolt 3 port is on the back of the machine on the 16L13, so you can place the dock on either side of the computer. The dock has to be plugged in to an AC Adapter to work. It comes with a special combined data+power cable that is designed for HP's Zbook laptops. However, it still works fine with a separate data only Thunderbolt 3 cable.

I highly recommend having a dock for anyone who will be using this laptop at a desk. With a spare power brick for your desk, you can easily unplug the system and take it with you. I bought mine used last year for around $140. With any luck the new docks coming out from Startech, Belkin, or OWC may work too.

Just ordered one of these from Eurocom. Less than $1400 for a 7600k + GTX1070 is crazy. I look forward to comparing this with the GT73VR and P750ZM I already have.

Just the standard education pricing from Eurocom. 7600k, 1070, 8gb, and 128gb ssd comes to $1390 USD.

Compare this to a barebones P750DM2 from rjtech or any other vendor selling them. Just the chassis + 1070 (no CPU, RAM, storage or wi-fi) comes to $1460. Even if you don't have an education discount, ~$1550 for this F5 configuration is a crazy good deal.

Well I will look into it when I get my laptop. Gonna be a little bit. Still can't decide if I want the 4k screen or not haha.. Was gonna buy later but they are always out of stock..

Did anyone get the 4k from Eurocom? Is it 60hz in use, im scared since it is only 2 lanes that it will be 30hz...

I saw this video posted by Eurocom on Youtube:

It looks like the GTX 1080 may not need a different mainboard. At about 30 seconds you can see a standoff adapter plate that appears to screw in at the standard MXM screw mounts. If this is the case, its great news!

I am anticipating a major shootout between @Mr. Fox and I. The good news is you guys will benefit, because he will report his findings to Eurocom and they should be able to open up the BIOS more.

Honestly one of my favorite things about the laptop is that it is so quiet under load of games and it's stays cool at the same time. The laptop that I had before was some skinny asus with a hq processor and a 980m and it was so loud. This things fans are so big it barely needs a few rpms to cool it :)

That's a pretty interesting solution Eurocom came up with.

Also, I noticed there are still 4 heat pipes on the GPU, same number as the 1070N... how are they compensating for the extra 30W of TDP?

Try disabling ublock / adblock / privacy badger and the like, sometimes the tools used to build websites depend on external references blocked by blocking software.

IDK what you are trying to configure, but I was just able to configure an F5, after I disabled my blockers for the site :)

I have it. It runs at 60 Hz, and I don't believe it's 30pins/2 lanes. I think that their 1080p panels are. But not the 4k panels. Looking at the specs for the Samsung panel, all sites say it's a 40pin/4 lanes eDP connector. I believe the connector on the motherboard is 40 pin also, but that Eurocom uses a 30 pin cable with 30 pin panel, and a 40 pin cable with a 40 pin panel. Anyway, Woodzstack will find out pretty soon if my theory is right!

    http://www.panelook.com/LTN156FL02-L01_Samsung_15.6_LCM_overview_23360.html

And I actually purchased a different panel with a better color gamut (for photography). This panel:

    http://www.panelook.com/LQ156D1JW02_SHARP_15.6_LCM_overview_24748.html

I'm shipping the laptop and the new panel to Woodzstack, so he can inspect everything, delid and repaste my CPU and change the display. Well worth it.

Also, for the SteelSeries keyboard, it's supposed to work on Linux too. Here's a link to the project, for anyone who's interested:

    https://github.com/stevelacy/msi-keyboard-gui

I actually really wanted to try it on mine, but my keyboard's backlight isn't working. It wasn't working in Linux, and I got so annoyed that I couldn't get it to work no matter what that I installed Windows + all drivers... And it didn't work either. So if someone else is dual booting or using only Linux, please let me know if it works! I wanted to write a quick tutorial/review of the F5 with Linux (Linux Mint and Ubuntu).

That is actually what I assumed, but while speaking with @woodzstack about my order he said there was a 30 pin eDP on the board. Maybe he thought I was asking about the display. That Sharp panel is actually the one I want to, I am gonna purchase and install it when I get mine in.

A quick look at the repo you posted shows it is not exactly what we are talking about. That is just a controller to the LED's to allow the EC to communicate with linux for the backlight.

We are talking about porting the steel series software that is on MSI laptops over to our laptop. WHen I did this for a fangbook 3, a while ago, it was a config file change to allow our EC to communicate with steel series. Took a little bit of time to find my way around but once I did I was able to get it.

The problem here is this was a long time ago, and I do not high level code as much as I used to soooo...Might be rusty in getting it or they could have even completely changed the way they determine supported notebooks, it may actually be in the EC now which I don't like to mess with.

yeah sorry man, I have developed a bad habit of skimming through posts, and maybe misread something, what was the original question that I screwed up, haha (again, sorry!)

No problem man, it was in the first page of our private messages about my order. I had just asked about if the connector in the laptop was actually 30 or 40pin because they show both options for displays. But from posts earlier it sounds like it's a dual connector and can handle both.

just click on QUOTE instead if you can, and add your email and [email protected] to the quote page and any details that did not work or need attention etc.. then follow up, or check things like popup blockers or adblocks or antiviruses etc.. could also be they were working on the site simultaneously for a moment while you placed an order.
They told me they have sales staff 24/7 so you should be able to get help anytime.

Oh I didn;t even know such a connector existed, that makes so much darn sense.... I thought there was a 40 pin that was shrunk to fit a 30 pin. All I;ve seen tested was 30 pins so far.

Without having the laptop in front of me it is just a guess. I do know on a past laptop it actually had both connectors, but this was 2 years ago or so.

I hope it works with any 40pin (if other specs match) because that opens up so many options for displays. I might even try to devise a quick swap screen, did it once before was not the most sturdy but was pretty interesting. It was a throw away laptop so I kinda destroyed things while I did it also haha.

I do want to try one but I looked at reviews of that panel, and it just doesn't have that good of color reproduction :(... Unless your batch is different than the one Eurocom currently sells? The B156HTN05.2
