I think the mobo is the issue, which could be damaging the GPU's. Two faulty GPU's in a row is rather rare. Hopefully they do tests to stress the entire computer instead of just the GPU.

Well, the support log today listed it as being "Completed" now. No other action was logged in from my last post. I do plan on calling in the morning to ask about the possibility of a mobo issue that could cause it to fail considering those chances. I just hope I don't come off as persistent and to the point of being annoying

You paid money for a working computer. There is nothing wrong with ensuring you protect your investment and time. If they send you back the unit and the GPU fails again, not only did they waste your time but their own time and money. I'm going to be watching your case closely because I plan on buying the 7700K/1080 combo from Eurocom. If they think your call is annoying, they will downright despise me if I have any issues with my computer.

Well, put the desktop on temporary vacation until Zen/Vega comes out. The MSI 16L13 is now my daily driver for the time being. Gave Titanfall 2 a good 2-hour play in SP today using my external monitor as the display (speaking of another future upgrade).

Temps were good pumping out 1200P @ 60 FPS with my lack-luster thermal paste. Can't wait to pick up Doom during the Winter Sale. Need to get Witcher 3 GOTY installed, and Gears of War 4. After those 3 games get installed my storage will be gone. SSD mass storage devices at affordable prices can't come soon enough. I thought 1TB would last me awhile.

    Side note:
Those HyperX Cloud Stinger headphones that I got with my order are surprising awesome. (I did have to plug it into the right audio port, set the correct playback device in Windows 10, and crank the slider on the headset to full before I experienced said awesomeness, but once I did...) I would say if you are in the market for a really good $50.00 headset that works with everything, give these a try.

Legit question, seems like everyone is repasting these when they get them. Your website makes it sound like you all paste them during the build. My question: is it me or does this make it seem like the Eurocomm pasting is not done well?

i don't think that most are doing repaste due to Eurocom's repaste being ineffective. most are doing 1. they have to remove heatsink for checking/upgrading ram. or they want to repaste beneath IHS cheap paste.
I am using stock paste and have almost perfect temps with auto fans. so i dont think you should be worrying, they have done awesome job.

Unless you plan on using all 4 slots for RAM there is no need to remove the heatsink if 2 slots are all you're gonna use. Being that most people here that pick up this laptop are enthusiasts, it's like we "have" to tinker around with it ourselves lol.

Other notebook manufacturers tend to use terrible thermal compound in their notebooks, but Eurocom's paste was actually fine (IC Diamond). My before and after temps were within a couple of degrees. Whether or not it is worth disassembling the system for only a few degrees improvement is debatable. Personally, I enjoyed taking this thing apart to see how everything fit together. It's my first time owning a laptop with a desktop CPU, so seeing that LGA socket in there was sort of amazing to me.

I think the thermal issues are mainly with NVME or higher-end SSDs. My humble M.2 Samsung 850 Evo stays within 50-60 C.

Anyone using a docking station for their F5?

    Taking recommendations
    Not thunderbolt

Also, I don't have a gsync option on my Nvidia control panel with latest drivers, am I missing something?

Edit: Is it because I need to have an external display connected for it to be active?

I placed a pre-order for the 7700K/1080 F5 last night with Eurocom. I received an e-mail from Garry confirming that I wanted to use Amazon Payments. I had some questions, so I replied. One question was about a discount and another about whether they would get the same 120hz 5ms 1080p TN panel that is being offered on the Clevo 15'' laptops for the F5. Garry responded to my e-mails. He wrote nothing about a discount. He only asked if I was sure I wanted to pay using Amazon Payments since I would be charge an extra 8% for using it.

I replied to the e-mail about the kinds of discounts they might offer and Garry said if I ordered directly, there won't be any extra fees. He also said he has the 120hz panel for the P750DM2 in stock and nothing about whether that panel will work with the MSI 16L13.

Considering I wrote twice to him about discussing an applicable discount and if the F5 would get the 120hz 5m 1080 panel around the time my order would actually ship and not getting an answer for either question, I canceled my order. I see others having success with Eurocom's customer service here, but based off what I got now, I am going to stay away. That's too bad, I don't see anyone offering this machine with the 7700k/1080 and it would be great.

there is 10% discount for student and i dont think you have to confirm from garry for this discount. also from my experience with Eurocom customer service is that u may want to ask 1 question per email. if i ever ask more thn one queries, their response was always about the question that suits them most. i had similar experience like you have at time it almost sound like a computer generated lol. but i dont mind it since it wasnt affecting me.
shame that it didnt work for u :(. its definitely a great machine none the less.

Exactly! It read like a computer generated response. That's a shame if I have to ask a single question per e-mail. This could be a sign to wait until I get more information on the 7700k/1080 F5 and how the machine is going to handle the extra heat.

In my case, having my emails answered are hit or miss. Perhaps I'm too impatient to wait for an answer (a couple emails went unanswered) but at the very least it's really easy and convenient to be able to call and talk to someone.

Speaking of which, I called for an update this morning and let them know my concerns regarding the chances of the mobo being the possible culprit. I spoke with Mark and he said the technician that's assigned to it was out on lunch. Furthermore, he did say that it was possible the replacement GPU they sent me could have been part of a bad batch but he will let the tech know. I requested an email later today for an update so we'll see if @eurocomsupport will shoot me an email.

TBH, I would wait until Eurocom releases benchmarks. The 1080 in this notebook will be TDP capped to a certain extent, so we don't really know how much of a performance gain it will have over the 1070. Over at Razer, the 17" Razer Pro has a 1080 that is so strictly TDP limited, it runs pretty much like a 1070, except they charge $3700+ for the laptop. What is the point of paying for a crippled 1080 if a 1070 does the same job

@keftih - The RBP has terrible cooling problems which I think accounts for most of the performance issues. How well the 16L13 can handle the 1080 is a really good question. Certainly cooling the 1070 doesn't seem to be an issue, but the 1080 should generate a lot more heat. I think some parameters may be adjustable in a unlocked vBIOS, but I don't know.

Does anyone know if other builders like @hidevolution will start offering the 16L13?

I aware of the TDP cap (150W whereas most DTR 1080's are at 200W) but I am very intrigued about the prospects as well. I am sure, out of box, it is going to run like an overclocked 1070. However, I love pushing the limits of hardware. This laptop seems like it was tailor made for me, lots of big potential in a small package.

I think the GTX 1080 will have a redesigned heatsink to help the cooling. I am curious what the GTX 1080 board layout looks like. The GTX 1070 is already very packed. There is not much room in the chassis going any direction for a larger card.

Thanks for the link. This graph from the review was particularly interesting: [IMG]

I would have thought there would be little to no difference in the majority of games, but it actually looks like quite a few games respond well to the higher clock speed of the 6700K vs 6700HQ.

When frame rates are uncapped, the 6700HQ is a bottleneck for the gtx 1070. I've been telling other people this on the forums but some people refuse to believe the 6700HQ could be a bottleneck. When you're dealing with desktop class GPUs, the 6700HQ is pretty much trash if you want to render higher fps, this would be important for the user who connect to an external high refresh rate at home. For me this isn't an issue since I use my desktop but I could easily replace my desktop with this laptop.

My latest score in Firestrike 15,856
6700K at 4.4ghz and undervolted -50mV. :) I will test to see just how long I can go.

I'm going to order two of these for testing, thanks!

They have three sizes for thickness of the heatsink.. I'm still thinking the thickest one should work at 4mm (.16") since the copper heatsinks I have are working fine at .20" or so.

    You're welcome

Edit. @Talon your FS physics Score of 13 754 is slightly below the expected score with 4.4GHz. Do you have something <unwanted> running in the background? Because FireStrike physics should have been closer to 14,100 with 4.4GHz.

As far as I can tell, the BIOS already automatically stops charging the battery to 100%.. Mine randomly will hold a 94% charge and it will randomly trickle charge as to not fully top the battery off. This seems to be exactly what you want for battery longevity. You don't have to do anything, it should be handling the battery safely.

As far as your panel, just open up Nvidia Control Panel and set a custom resolution, only changing the Hz output by 1 hz increments at a time. The application will automatically test the Hz setting each time. For example, my 1080p LG panel in my unit will only do 63hz.

I don't mind having the extra parts :p I could use one of these 4 parts in another machine! Thanks again bud.

More choices for m2 cooling thanks to @Papusan and others:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/182380448754 (Seems to be sold out, I snagged the last 2) It has a height of 3mm and will fit under the bottom cover of the Tornado F5
    [IMG]

http://www.ebay.com/itm/172400986285 (Still in stock at time of this posting) This also comes in THREE heights of 2mm, 3mm, and 4mm. All of these sizes will fit under the bottom lid of the Tornado F5

    Hey guys ,

    I bought a MSI GT62VR dominator pro-087 for 1550$ and it's still return time.
I din't know the Tornado F5 existed until a few days ago and it looks interesting.

    My spec are
    6700hq
    16gb ram
    1070
    250gb SSD

Newegg is charging me 300$ to return the laptop and the same build is about 400$ more @ Eurocom

So I could return my MSI and get the tornado F5 with 16gb ram / 250GB 850 Evo for about 700$ difference would you guys think it's too much of a price gap and I should stick to the GT62VR?

You have to shell out $700 to get a Tornado F5... ehhh.. Up to you man, that restock fee is ridiculous at Newegg. But I mean for obvious reasons the F5 will last you longer because of the CPU upgrades, etc.. If I were you though, I probably would have a hard time with losing $300 on the restock fee. See if you can just sell the GT62VR for close to what you paid and then order this.

    GT62VR is Mmx as well.
I know BGA vs LGA but I mean is it really worth 400-700$ difference?

BGA is BGA. Whatever you say. Even the so called unlocked 6820hk is low binned junk from Intel and should have been forbidden to sell!! Fraud.

I'm just looking for a laptop that will last me around 3-4 years @ 1080p 60hz
The socketable CPU is nice for the upgrade and performance boost but will the CPU be compatible with the F5 mobo in 3 years?

I'd probably just get a 6700k and never upgrade it until I change the laptop, so im sitting here wondering if it's worth the 400-700$ difference

If you like to tinker and want the machine to last longer, then yes it's way worth it.

That is an insane restocking fee, jeez . Even though it is not ideal, I would stick with the GT62VR for now. Spending $700 to switch to the Tornado F5 is way too much.

I would use the GT62VR for now, sell it later, and then use that cash plus the $700 you didn't spend towards the next laptop. The next one can always be socketed, and who knows, maybe by then it might have one of those new Ryzen 6-core CPUs :D

The comeback of AMD gaming laptops is going to get real next year i'm thinking. Now Intel hasn't even released Kaby officially and it's just a mere 2% bump in performance.. Yikes.. but without getting into a discussion about Intel's choices.. they had no competition.. until now.. and it was good timing on AMD's part to release these new CPUs at Kaby launch. They need this competition and it's exciting :p

I agree, you need a lot of CPU power if you wanna aim for 120/144Hz gaming. And congrats on your score for your laptop, it's not far off my desktop with the same config! (Although I am aware you do get more CUDA for your cores in the laptop 1070!)

    Question:

So, what do you Tornado F5 owners think about the idea of having an overclocking competition exclusively for owners of this machine? I have been talking with @Eurocom Support about sponsoring it, maybe to ring in the new year and celebrate this wonderful high performance anomaly in 15-inch notebooks. We could do this and have a prize for the winner something like their choice between a 7700K CPU and KBL BIOS update to support it on their F5, or a new 512GB 960 Pro SSD. Again, entry would only be open to Tornado F5 (and generic equivalent 16L13 purchased elsewhere) owners. No other brands or MSI BGA turdbooks would be allowed in the competition. Thoughts?

I should be getting the Tornado F5 R2 around the end of the month to assist with testing the 7700K, DDR4-3200 RAM and 1080 that will be available in the next revision of this little monster. I would not be eligible to compete with the new configuration, but I'd sure enjoy watching you guys showcase your tuning skills and the extraordinary capabilities of the Tornado F5.

I spoke to @Diversion on the phone earlier this evening and he liked the idea. I'll need some help keeping track of the numbers, so I'm going to have him help with that part. He will be competing, so you'll have to watch your back... won't be an easy win with him and his badass machine on the prowl.

Edit: No, Brother @Papusan - you won't be able to enter the competition, and you're not allowed to give any of your special top secret tuning tips to your favorite F5 racer when nobody is watching.
