I was about to order p170em but after i had a chance to compare physically with 1762, i noticed that clevo case has crappy cooling system. MSI case was very cool indeed. But i hadnt have a chance to test the 16F3 model. How is temps. when loading. I am planning to make an order this week the 15 inch model. 17 inch case never exceeded 78 C on furmark burn in test hope the 16f3 has same cooling performance.

So I pulled the trigger on a 1762 Barebones from GenTechPC.

I upgraded it heavily and feel I have a pretty darn nice set up that should last for a few years. Here are the essential specifications of my new system:

    Screen:
    17.3" 1920x1080 Full HD (Matte-type) Anti-Glare

    Graphics Controller:
nVidia GeForce GTX 680M 4GB GDDR5, DX11 with nVidia Optimus Technology

    Processor:
    3rd Gen Intel Ivy Bridge Core i7-3820QM, 2.7-3.7GHz, 22nm, 8MB, 45W

    Thermal Compound:
IC Diamond 24 Carat Thermal Compound on both CPU/GPU (Free with CPU Upgrade)

    RAM:
    8GB DDR3 1600/PC3 12800 Dual-Channel (4G X 2)

    Primary Hard Drive:
I have a Samsung 830 256G SSD that I will install in the Primary location.

    Secondary Hard Drive:
500GB 7200rpm 2.5-inch 9.5mm 16MB SATA II 3Gb/s (Standard as a primary drive, but will have it moved over to the secondary location).

    WiFi:
Bigfoot networks Killer Wireless-N 1202 + Bluetooth 4.0 Combo Card

    Optical Drive:
4X Blu-Ray Read/8X DVDRW Super Multi Combo Drive

    Keyboard:
Steelseries Backlit Keyboard w/24 Programmable Color Variations

A few 8 Gig sticks of Ram may be installed in the near future for a total of 24 Gig, but the 8 Gig should be fine for now.

I have had several laptops with glossy screens so that is what I am familiar with, but this time a matte screen is in order. If I don't like it I can return my laptop and get the glossy. Still I hear good things about the standard Matte screen, and it was one of the options I agonized over the most of any other part.

This machine has the new blue lighting scheme that I think looks more classy than the branded MSI, and with the upgraded Steelseries I get the flexibility of programmable colored keys.

I guess my sager will be relegated to some kind of back up duty or may end up being a gift for a relative this Xmas.

Does anyone know what im doing wrong when trying to overclock the 1762 with 670m? I can set the core to 620mhz and afterburner shows that it set, but whenever I increase it from there, the clock only remains for a few seconds and defaults back to 598mhz. This is with Turbo on :/

Yeah, you need to use a program that can change the P1 state, since the P0 state that those programs are modifying is only accessible when in turbo mode in a retail unit normally.

Starting up nvidia inspector should let you go into the P0 state and change the P1 state if you need to.

You can also flash the bios using a bios editor like Svet's vbios tool and set your max clock when you are happy or use the higher voltage option to overclock further.

I knew the 16F3 was going to be slightly different compared to the F2, but I wish they gave us more info on that action bar.

It looks like all the GT60 touch buttons might have migrated over on this one.

Yeah, but I wish MSi cared to give the chassis a nice design instead of utilizing old stuff. They could use the old chassis but make it look better. Not everyone wants a hybrid 16f1/16f3 looking trap. They should have utilized a chassis looking more like the gt60 and give it black speakers IMHO

I don't know much if any about CPUs other than what I've learned from the forums.

I've learned technically it's illegal to sell es parts. So I'm sure you could make a pretty strong argument for a replacement.

Also looks like you're at a D0. I googled 2670qm gpuz and most of their screen shots show D2. That means there were 2 minor changes between your rev and mass production.

If its running stable and temps look good I personally don't see a problem with it. After all you're getting more memory and a faster clock.

With that said, see my first point.

Yeah, maybe I should contact them for replacement/refund, but I'm not pretty sure they know about es chips.
What if I contact intel, can I get replacement too?

Dunno. I guess that up to them. From what I've read, your ES chip belongs to them anyway. They could just take it from you and call it a day.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Maybe someone in this thread could help you. I opened it a few days ago about buying an es chip (deliberately.) there are a few folks who have experience with ES parts there.

Contacting Intel would only be useful to report the vendor for selling you an ES (Engineering Sample) which violates the Intel contract. It is not criminal, but it is illegal in the sense that ES are not supposed to be sold, they are only supposed to be used for testing...which is another reason you don't want it. ES CPU's are pounded hard in testing...real hard.

Your vendor should take the laptop back, pay for your return shipping and give you a full refund. You should then learn to never use the vendor again!

I agree 100% with Paladin44 on this! Not the first time we have seen this, and I'm sure not the last..... but this is an unscrupulous tactic, and you should seek a full refund, then buying from a reputable reseller.

Unrelated. Where can I buy a backlit steel series keyboard for my 1762? I've heard frosty computers on eBay, but I didn't see anything on their store.

Also. My keyboard only has 1 ribbon cable. Does the backlit require more connections?

Hey guys I'm very interested in the MSI 1762 and was wondering how the build quality, cooling, and size of the laptop are?
right now I have a gateway p-6831 fx Gateway Support - P-6831 FX Notebook Specifications
How 'huge' is the laptop lol? The size and rocker touchpad(which I often dont use) is whats keeping me from buying it.

Obviously with a 680m the laptop will blow my current one away.
The other laptop I was considering was the Sager NP9170.

I posted more information here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/what-notebook-should-i-buy/687871-sager-np9170-vs-msi-gt70-barebones-vs-just-wait.html

but wasnt getting any responses :( but now just had some specific questions about this laptop.

It's quite large. I just got mine a few weeks ago and like it so far. Build quality is good, but the materials feel cheap. The rocker pad sucks, it's extremely hard to press down.
    Cooling seems sufficient. Currently I'm running a 675m and 3610 (2 heatsinks, 1 fan for the CPU,GPU)

Any laptop builder or reseller that offers the MSI GT series laptops and whitebook equivalents should be able to sell you the SteelSeries keyboard for your 1762.

The backlit keyboard does require a second connection and your 1762 should have that connection. the plug is actually located on the bottom side and requires you to remove the bottom panel for access to the plug. You will have to feed the cable through the slot in the top down to the bottom to get it plugged in. It's actually really simple. :)

To further clear any confusion, the new 1762- w/GTX680M does not allow you to upgrade to the multi-color backlit keyboard. It only allows you to use the built in blue keyboard.

I can't handle the steelseries keyboard that came with my ms-17625.

I'm onsite at a client and need to buy a new keyboard asap. Can anyone recommend one that will fit the chassis or would any 17" keyboard be suitable?

    Thanks!

Lol, if you think any 17" keyboard would be suitable I'm not sure if you should be having clients for laptop repair.

You need to contact retailers of MSI barebones directly for the exact model standard keyboard the ms-1762 was released with. Though I'm pretty sure its the same for the 1761, gt60, latest sandy bridge and newer MSI laptops, maybe even the gx660, gx640? If so you can get it off ebay but you should find some part numbers to confirm.

I'm not repairing anyone else's laptop, I'm not even in IT, I just happen to be onsite at a client, it has noting to do with my personal laptop (the one in question) and I don't really appreciate the snide remark.

I don't know what you mean by at a client, you made it sound an awful lot like your a tech guy trying to repair someones laptop.

I was just saying you shouldn't be in IT if you didn't know that in general almost all keyboards are incompatible with other laptops, and your not, so its OK and I don't blame you for not knowing that.

Also you're being unclear when you say "not anyone elses laptop" and "nothing to do with my personal laptop". Sorry just confusing to me.

I'm sure you're well prepared to deal with clients in whatever you were trained to do.

Quick question. I received my ms 16f3 yesterday and noticed that the LED keyboard isn't lighting up. I thought maybe there was some driver/utility that I needed to install first, but haven't found any. Any suggestions?

I checked and the second, smaller ribbon cable is plugged in.

I have doubts you will be able to located drivers for that laptop with Windows XP 64-bit. Can I ask why you have not considered using Windows 7 Professional? 7 Pro offers XP Mode for virtualization for those programs that absolutely need to use XP. No drivers necessary as far as I know because it is running in a VM environment.

You many not have the software for the backlit keyboard. Try THIS It is the Keyboard Light Manager used by MSI in any laptop with the SteelSeries keyboards. That should work for you.
After you install it, it will create a desktop icon that will not work. Just use the icon located in your toolbar at the bottom right of the screen next to the clock.

Let the fun begin! Pulling the trigger tomorrow morning on a 1762 from the powernotebooks guys.
    (i7 3610, 680m, 72% AUO Matte, 16gb, Bigfoot 1202).

I liked the dual fans of the Asus... the touchpad was awesome and the wider keyboard spacing was nice.... but I just couldn't bring myself to spend that much on a laptop and only have 670m graphics, so MSI wins!

I'm a little undecided about the fastest/best storage option, whether to have a pair of striped SSDs handling OS, game storage, image storage, and photoshop cache... ~OR~ separate SSDs, one for OS and image storage, the other for photoshop cache and game storage....

Finally, I'm a little curious about the dual mSATA Super Raid option on the branded GT70. I watched the GenTechPC comparison video and he noted that Super Raid was exclusive to the branded GT70. So now that I've been told it can't be done, of course I'm curious what it would take to do it... The hardware board might be able to be purchased direct through an MSI repair center... but I'm curious if the bios would be able to recognize it stock... anyway, just my random ramblings, carry on :)

    You are right.
I have been running windows Xp Pro under VMwave, but for playing online games (as MotoGp 3 URT) very lag and for single player is Ok.

VMwave setting Processor core: 3, and RAM: 3 GB.
Any idea to increase performance VMwave during playing online game?

Hello bareboners, I'm hoping someone can help me diagnose an issue I've been having.

I am running a MSI Whitebook 1761 from Gentech with an I7-2670qm (stock clocks), 2x4GB 1333mhz ddr3 ram and a GTX 580m (also stock clocks) and I've been running into an issue that causes my system to shutdown.

While gaming (Borderlands 2, with the lowest possible settings) and even occasionally while idle , I experience an abrupt shutdown, no warnings or BSOD, just a shutdown and immediately I'm back to the computer rebooting, sometimes several times in quick succession.

I originally suspected that this was a temperature issue, so I've been vigilant about cleaning out the insides. I applied Prolimatech PK-1 paste and Fujipoly .5mm pads to my heat sinks, did a clean windows 7 install and updated to all the newest drivers. I've also swapped in new ram and tried different ram slots, as well as installing a new SSD, and yet the issue persists.

I've ruled out the CPU overheating by using OCCT to stress test and core temps peaked in the mid 70's and did not trigger a shutdown.

GPU Idle temps range from 37c and can drift up to 53c and usually stabilizes somewhere in the 40s. Under load I've yet to see it reach higher than 82 c using MSI Kombustor as a stress test, at which point it rebooted. I've tried this multiple times and sometimes experience the shutdown well before hitting 70c, which leads me to believe the issue has something to do with the GPU.

Any time I run a GPU intensive process, the card makes an audible noise (coil whine?), so I'm wondering if this has something to do with the shutdowns and if it is something I can fix without buying a replacement. Aside from the GPU, I'm also wondering if maybe my AC adapter is causing this issue.

Does anyone have any further insight or guidance for me?

This kind of shutdown for me usually happened as a power issue, I saw it when I popped an HD7970M in my old 16F2 barebone machine.

I would scrutinize your power brick.... Maybe you could try hooking up an external monitor, running the same situation but with your internal monitor switched off? That would take a decent chunk of strain off your power circuitry while still fully stressing the GPU.

    What brand is your PSU?

Yeh, I'd try swapping out the PSU.

The 180W one that came with my 16F2, would give in under load (2920XM+580M).

Delta electronics is the best brand IMO.

    It's a Delta Electronics, Model# APD-180HB B

I figure I'll try to find another one of these and go from there.

Odd because that should be able to take that sort of hit, you may have been unlucky and got a faulty unit.

The other option is that your power delivery circuit on the motherboard is not performing correctly.

I just tried the test with the external monitor, shutdown occurred at 78-79c after 8 minutes of MSI Kombustor with the fans at 100%.

Upon rebooting, it cycled itself on/off 4 more times before it was stable enough to write this. It's also worth noting that I haven't experienced this type of shutdown on battery power.

I'll look into the AC adapter, but if it's the GPU or motherboard, it's looking like expensive replacement, in which case I'm tempted to shelf the notebook and build myself a desktop.

No luck with a new AC adapter.

Tracking down a new motherboard seems like the next logical step to me.

Isn't the notebook still under warranty?

The the 1761 with a GTX580M wasn't available yet a year ago so you should be able to have it fixed by your reseller?

Yes, get a hold of GenTech tech support since that is where you bought it. They will help you with troubleshooting, and warranty repair is necessary.

Does each site use the same matte stock monitor for the MS-17626? Powernotebooks and xotic are the two sites I'm comparing and powernotebook is cheaper, but they're screen doesn't have the "ultra bright ultra clear" etc. Is this just mumbo jumbo or do the two sites use different screens?
