I want to run OS X, but I wanted to use the size/weight/power of a laptop like the LG P300......which Apple doesn't offer......the macbook pro has the same guts, but is much heavier and bigger......the macbook air is similar in size and weight but is very weak on the hardware side......so, I thought I'd try to run OS X on this machine.......sadly, the LG keyboards (ps2) are not supported in OS X, making it a useless portable machine......I'd have to always plug in a usb keyboard.

Anyway, the laptop (basically brand new) is up for sale for a few more days, I will return it if no one is interested.

Hi everyone, Id like to ask all you P-300 users about gaming and heat.

Ive read some reviews saying it will get extremely hot while gaming? It would make sense since its a 2+ ghz cpu and a 8600m in a 13,1" laptop.

But how bad is it? and will it eventually got so hot that there is problems while gaming? have there been problems with laptops crashing or overheating?

    thanks

    Hello!

I'm thinking of buying LG P300-UABJJV, which is the P300 with T9300 and GeForce 8600M GS.

However, as I'm going to be running ubuntu (or some other distro, but probably ubuntu for a while) I'm wondering if anyone know if all the hardware is supported, or if there's some problems. Googling for "LG P300 ubuntu" didn't give me many relevant results :p

I have the LG P300-UABJJV. I know that intel turbo memory does not work in Ubuntu. I have yet to install ubuntu on my laptop, I'm waiting for the new distribution 8.04 that will be released on April 24, I hope it will support most of the hardware. But what I understand is that Intel Turbo Memory will only work in Vista.

Turbo memory is just another form of the windows ready boost technologies. Which is specific to vista. Thats why it will only work on vista.

Firstly what about a P300 Owners Lounge?

I just got a P300 from Futurshop the other day and am very happy so far with this unit. Questions though, some of you have mentioned the XP downgrade disk, was this with a Canada unit? Also your 3DMark06 Scores are they XP or Vista, OC or stock?

Has anyone OC the P300 yet? With what? Riva? What kind of numbers?

Any info would be great as i only have a week to decide if i am going to keep this or look/wait for something else.

    Cheers

Where can I buy a P300 in Canada? It's not on Future Shop's website any more and they said they aren't carry it any more :)confused :).

Does anyone know if the P300-UABJJV will come to Canada? I'd love to have the faster processor. I emailed LG but haven't heard back from them yet.

Is anyone else experiencing problems with mouse buttons of the p300s touchpad?

On my P300, they have a horrible pressure point (sorry for my english), you really have to push them hard during Drag & Drop, or you will loose whatever you hold with your cursor. For example, scrolling in the browser is hard to manage, because 4 of 10 times, I loose the scroll bar, cause my finger is getting weak while pushing the mouse button down.

I Don't think that is normal behaviour ...

my pressure points are fine but the scroller on the touch pad is pretty sensative i may have to adjust that. I just got mine and am very happy with it.

the keyboard is bilingual so it can get a bit annoying, but the keyboard is very solid.

I'll get use to it though.

but I highly recommend this notebook, its really nice

I spoke to a manager from head office and he said that LG was having trouble supplying these to the chain and they have no ETA as to when a new shipment would come in. He did indicate that they were trying to order more and that it'll be relisted as soon as they have inventory.

    I'm glad I picked up 3 when I could! :D

    Hi all!

Any LG P300 Owner (espacial the T8300 Books) here has a problem with whinig? Have a XPS M1330 since yesterday and its whining makes me crazy. It gives you a headache after a while. Would be great if some of you will answer, because the LG could be my next choice.

It's so quiet compared to my other previous notebook. I can rarely hear the fan. |thats even when I put the fan on the highest settings.

everything is so sleek and sexy about this notebook. Not to much of a fan about the colors but it doesn't bother me at all and the keyboard is bilingual but I got use to it after a few days.

    It's solid and its amazing.!!!

If your asking about the fan. I can assure you it's extremely quiet. You can barely hear it. On highest cool mode (there are three modes) which is the noisiest mode. I would have to say that I can't even hear it.

There are times when it will burst for just a second and even when that happens it's really faint.

If your worried about having a noisy machine I can assure you its quiet like a ninja :p

@c2ironfist: Thanks for answering. Sounds very good. I love noiseless Notebooks :) .
But mainly i wanted to know if there is a problem with whinig on this book. It has a Santa Rosa Platform with a Penryn CPU and that seems to have problems with whining. My Dell definitely had. Thats why i send it back to Dell.
There seems not to be such a big community for the P300 like there is for the XPS Books from Dell. So I thought the P300 owners here could tell me if there is whinig a problem for the P300. Seems that yours doesn't whine at all!?

    Greetings S.

Regarding any noise I can rarely hear anything. I don't hear any whinig
the only noise I hear are the HDD which is very quiet and the fan. Both are extremely quiet.

I just thought of this now, but wouldn't this notebook be the perfect candidate for a hybrid graphics system like in the SZ? The battery life with the 8600 is already impressive, but for when you aren't gaming, a x3100 should give that number a significant boost. This might seem to defeat the purpose of this notebook, but having a laptop that is capable of achieving 6+ hrs of battery and being as cold as an icecube when surfing and then flipping a switch that made it a gaming workhorse.

Just picked up p300.Very sensitive to noisy computers and can say this one operates very quietly. No ramping up and down of loud whirring sounds as so many laptops suffer from. Very little noise from fan, slight muted ticking from hard drive.
I had previously returned two toshiba laptops ( 2007 models) because of excessive noise ( in my opinion)
First time poster to this forum. Will report further after I have had a chance to play with new laptop
Thanks to all for sharing your information. I'm off to find a sleeve today

    Hi!!

I just bought the P300 earlier today and was using it for about 7 hours straight lol. It's my first laptop so everything is new and fun for me.

But now here comes my question. I got really tired after using it. (it could be the switch from XP to Vista!!!lol ) Does any of you find the small screen to be a problem?

And another thing. I mainly bought it for 2 reasons: 1. It's super light so it's easy for me to travel around with it, to bring it to school, etc etc2. It has a video card so I can play Oblivion on it.

Would you say the laptop is still worthy for its high price if I decided not to play something as demanding as Oblivion?

I'll mainly use it for homework, watching TV and surfing the net.

hello everyone, I'm a long time fan of this site. And I'd like to thank everyone here for making this a great resource.

I seem to have found a laptop I truly like in the p300.

And I see so many of members here own it (in all of its flavors).

However I'm not sure where one can purchase this (futureshop was mentioned but now thats a no-no, and sweden was mentioned as well, but its a bit far away from home, I live in Mexico).

So if anyone can give me any lead on where to get this amazing lap I'd be thankful (preferably on the American continent).

    Thanks & Regards,
    ama :)

you've made an excellent choice but unfortunately your unable to find it.
I hope you can somewhere, it totally sucks when you want something but at the same time can' get a hold of it.

Us Canadians are unfortunate like that when the US get goodies we want but don't offer here in Canada :(

Hi everyone, I just got my P300, I love it so far. Except the keyboard layout.
Do any of you have a P300 that has a US keyboard layout? How did you get it?
Will it be possible for me to get a US layout keyboard and then just replace it without having to update the bios or such?

    Any help will be appreciated.

While LG are the only one who can answer your questions with certainty, the following most likely apply:

    1. No BIOS update is required when exchanging keyboards

2.You will need to obtain a replacement keyboard from LG. Keyboards are usually sold as spare parts (e.g. Lenovo and Dell) and can be purchased by end users.

    3. It is not too difficult to exchange a notebook keyboard but you will most likely need to disassemble your P300 to a certain degree, before getting access to remove the keyboard. Instructions on how to proceed are usually found in the notebooks service manual/hardware maintenance manual.

i got use to the keyboard fairly quick. It's not so bad just give it a day and you'll be fine.

I thought about changing it at first there is a us layout for the keyboard but I don't think its worth the trouble just train a bit with it and you'll be fine :)

Just bought the laptop a week ago and so far I'm overall impressed. The screen is readable no matter the brightness setting - a definite plus for me to save on battery life (which I'm able to achieve around 4.5 hours). Screen quality? What can I say, gorgeous; after you go LED, you'd never want a traditional LCD screen ever again. Whites are the "purest" white I've ever seen in a laptop, and what's more, brightness and sharpness is at least as great as the Macbook Pro screen I've seen. As to how silent the unit really is, you'd have to see one in action to believe it... unbelievable considering how high the specs are (T9300, 8600GS graphics). I'd have to literally stick my head towards the heat exhaust to hear the fan... and at that it sounds like a light breeze. :p

On the negative side, my glossy laptop lid came scratched right out of the box. It's not just the little smudges you often see on laptops every so often nowadays mind you, it's a real long and noticeable one, around 1mm thick and 6cm in length arcoss the righthand corner. Of course there's also the tiny scratches you see only under certain lighting conditions, but hey, that's not really worth mentioning in detail is it? Another thing, the audio-out/mic jacks seem to be of poor quality. On top of the connector being improperly molded out of cheap plastic, the headphone jack isn't half as loud enough. Only would cranking the volume all the way up to 72 would things be barely audible.

I can't comment on gaming so far since I've only ran a 8-year old adventure game, but Windows Experience Points (WEI) seem impressive, with a score of 5.9 for Windows Aero and a 5.4 for 3D gaming.

Is this a keeper? I'd say yes albeit some noticeable flaws. I'd definitely be getting a Thinkpad T400 in a year or so mind you, but hey, guess what, this is coming from a person who barely keeps his computers for more than a month... don't ask me why.

Mine is only 2.4ghz though and I just recently got it too.

    T9300 CPU, GeForce 8600GS 256MB, 4GB 667MHz DDR2 RAM (free upgrade from 2GB), 250GB HDD, external dual-layer DVD-RW (sorry don't know the exact spec), 1280x800 LED backlit screen

Oh and I got it in Hong Kong for $16500... which roughly translates to $2100 Canadian. An astronomical price I know but I'm paying back my mom in installments. Ha, as if she'd remember anyway. ;)

edit: Oh right I should possibly update my location lol

    Thanks c2ironfist!

I really only *need* a laptop in mid-August.. do you think I should hold off for the time being and hope for a price drop or an upgrade? What are the chances of that happening before August?

On the other hand, I *really* want the P300 .. and since Futureshop has stopped selling it on their website, I'm afraid that their stores are going to run out too.

Argh! Can't make up my mind!

If you can wait I would suggest it. With electronics they drop in price frequently and there area always newer and better things within months. I remember about 4 or so months ago when I was shopping for a new notebook I saw a P300 for 2200 at futureshop. At the time I didn't know anything about it I paid 1700 for mine so I feel pretty good about that.

I'm sure if you wait until August you'll be able to find something better maybe another notebook or a P300 with better specs.

However though if you can't wait and want something now I say go for it, its hard enough to getting a P300 and its good value for your money. I've done a lot of researching before buying this notebook. I've customized notebooks on dell and lenovo sites and you just get a better package with the P300. Knowing me I would never buy a notebook at futureshop considering they dont offer anything good so that tells you a lot the fact that I picked this notebook up there.

I suggest you wait. But in my opinion the P300 is a very good notebook. Maybe by August they may offer a better P300 model :)

    Thanks for the response Jimmy!

The only reason I would want the P300 now is because I'm afraid that Futureshop will no longer carry it (since they don't have it on their website anymore... they still have it in some retail stores though).

If you think that they will still carry it in a couple of months then I can definitely wait!

I've been told by several distributers that the P300 has been discontinued and there will be no more shipments to Canada. :(

I'm about to order this, seems too good to be true though. Only thing I'd like is a higher resolution, black lid and I've read some concerns about the level of black on the screen.

If you can hold off until August, I would recommend you do that since Montevina (Intel's next chipset for the Penryn) is around the corner. You will be getting a much better deal then. As for FutureShop selling it, you should also be concerned about support. If a store stop selling it or a manufacturer stops importing it into Canada, that doesn't bode well for future support of the laptop. At least you never have to worry about THAT with Dell.

Having said that, the P300 is one hot looking laptop!

I need this kind of laptop until mid-May very much and I can't decide between xps m1330 and p300. xps m1330 with led is hard to get in my city, still p300 is available.
Mobility and display quality are the main reasons why i want this kind of notebook.
Everybody here are talking about p300's high brightness, but i'm really troubled with that German review (http://www.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.notebookjournal.de%2Ftests%2F452%2F4&langpair=de|en&hl=en&ie=UTF8) where it is said that this notebook has "vary bad black values" of 2.12 cd (a lot of light leakage) that leads to a very bad contrast ratio of 119:1.
Still if rely on this review ( http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Dell-XPS-M1330-Notebook.6696.0.html) xps m1330 has great black levels of 0.4 and contrast ratio of 561:1.
My previous notebook had a lot of light leakage that ruined all impression of movies, so i don't want it again.
Maybe those Germans just got a bad sample of p300?

Could somebody that has this notebook comment the situation of bad blacks? Or better take a photo of a black screen in a dark room... I think that maybe everybody are impressed by this display because they mostly use it in a bright environment... Also does anybody know when notebookcheck review will be ready?
If blacks on p300 are really so bad, i'd better try to find m1330 with led...

i just checked lg Canada's website and saw two new models of P300. The new models has the intel core 2 duo T8100 processor (slower than the t8300) but got a harddrive upgrade from 250gb to 320gb. The other specs looks the same.

Is this a sign that the p300 is not discontinued and that newer models are going to be released in Canada?
