Well...unfortunately mine just passed away yesterday , i was playing Skyrim for two hours or so , the temperature was ok, all of a sudden it went off and the charger started to make a slight "metallic" noise . I had no idea what it happened , ten seconds later a purple-gray smoke started to come out from the left side (where the 2nd video card is - SLI ) . I disconnected it immediately, it smelled like it was about to catch fire and that's it
, RIP . I'm very disappointed because it had such good performance when playing games and the display was just awesome . Yes, the WiFi card was disconnecting like five times per day and the keyboard was low quality ( several keys lost their paint and the S key was already half broken) but still, i was quite satisfied by it . I have it from Nov 2013 so no warranty for me , i don't think i'm going to repair it really soon since i'm not doing that well financially right now compared to when i bought it . My guess it's that the mother board smoked, any of you know about something similar ?

-
I just did , it looks like the problem was where the ultrabay was connected to the motherboard , here are two pictures i just took with both of them, the 2nd video card and the motherboard as seen from the ultrabay empty slot . I don't know why i even enabled it to be honest , it was enabled for about a week or so , i guess i forgot it like this afterwards, there were no extra fps or something , what i was playing lately : Chivalry Medieval Warfare or Skyrim are running perfect without the 2nd video card, that's how i used it for most of the time anyway . Ofc, it still does not receive power,no led is on after connecting the charger, the motherboard melted and is now probably a short-circuit there .

Wow, it does looks like it overheated, and caused the connector to melt.

Will I am trying to decide if I should keep my lenovo y510p and give my fiance my Sager or keep the Sager and give her the lenovo. I am more team green, but the horsepower of the 8970M is still good for a secondary machine. Though enduro is absolutely horrendous! I have plenty of external Hard drives and have my primary gaming laptop. All 3 are in my signature. I can put a 960GB SSD in the Lenovo to help boost it's speeds more and probably help drop temps too. My fiance doesn't game but does do a lot of multi-tasking. And I may get her into gaming sometime in the future. I do also have a gaming desktop: Intel Xeon E3-1230V3, 16GB Ram, Nvidia GTX 770 2GB, 120GB SSD, 4TB HDD, 27" 1080p display. But just trying to decide what to give to my fiance. She does tend to set things on her lap and such, so I am leaning towards the Sager since it seems to keep cooler compared to the Lenovo plus if she does start gaming she will still have a powerful machine (when enduro works right), but I just wanted to see what all the owners think. The MSI was a gift from my mom before she died, I was lucky on that laptop.

I wanted to report that I have moved onto my Sager NP8651 with some food for thought.
At first I actually was disappointed with the Sager because the HDD was slower and noiser than the y510p.. i was thinking did i make a mistake??
I ended up putting in a M.2 512gb SSD into the Sager and now the HDD sound is non existent (except for accessing that drive for files). I am now in love with the machine!
Anyway, the y510p dolby audio set up is still better than the onkyo ones in the Sager.
y510p's overall foot print is smaller than the Sager, however, is still thicker than the Sager.
One major gripe i had with the y510p is the lack of cooling (95-100 for the GPU) while Sager ran at 56 degrees for the same game application!!
Other then that, the Sager wins in all categories that i am putting my y510p for sale on local craigslist. -
Ok guys I just bought a Lenovo y510p SLI model. The system is real slow due to the bloatware. What should I be doing first? How do you I preserve the current state and image and then do a clean install? I also want to lower the amps (undervolt) the CPU and GPU to lower heat as people have been complaining, but before I do that I want to upgrade my 750ms to 755m..just give me a step by step for this system...regards

If you want to keep the current state and image, just do an image with software like Macrium reflect. -

Within the last month I have had the following happen twice.
When I put the laptop to sleep a blue bios screen would pop up saying " efi network 0 for ipv4 boot failed" Making me have to hard restart the laptop to get it to load windows normally again.
I googled this and found it to be a somewhat common issue with lenovo so I followed some steps making sure my HDD is being detected in the BIOS and sure enough it is.
I'm hoping this is more of a software glitch and not a hardware problem.
Anybody else experience this? -
Yeah it had happened to me but it's random.
-
It has happened again being the third time.
I have reset all bios settings to default.
I was going to try disabling PXE boot but I cant find it anywhere in my bios.
This blue screen reading " efi network 0 for ipv4 boot failed" only happens when I put the laptop to sleep.
Edit:
Spoke with Lenovo support and they had me run a Lenovo HDD diagnostic tool and everything passed.
Then they suggested a full system restore and I decided that I didn't want to do that at this time.
Then they said they could transfer me to the software department for further assistance so I agreed BUT then she said they are a premium service and it will cost to speak with them so I then declined.
Here's hoping that setting bios to default fixes this problem.Last edited: Feb 13, 2015 -
I used to hate my y510p for its short battery life. Once I bought another laptop for mobile use, I have been loving this fine laptop!
sent through a tiny hole on a brick wall -
Walp, I really liked my y510p, but after sending it in for the 3rd time for a warranty claim to fix faulty 750m's, they decided to cut me a check. No replacement units and no parts to repair the laptop. Boo hoo.

I just installed unlocked bios, can you share what settings can improve performance.

Anyone running overclock on sli gpu without issues?
-
-
I still like my laptop.
And about the gpu overclock, I was asking because when I overclock after some time it automatically underclocks the gpu by 400 mhz. -
-
-
On my y510p(with win10 9926 though), driver version 347.xx cause my gpu clock stuck at 405mhz (2d clock). Now I'm back to 344.xx and it's all good. -

Hi,
I have a Y510p core I5,755m.
The need of the hour is SSD.
Pretty well confused which to buy but I want a M.2 SSD as I am not willing to sacrifice DVD ultrabay.
Can anyone suggest a good M.2 SSD? -

Please advice what to do next.
I am confused. -
Perhaps someone can come along and post some recommendations, or you can post a new thread in the hardware section of the forum. -
Any Y510p owners still around? lol
Now that GTA V PC has come out, has anyone tried running it yet? -

HEYYYYYY Everyone!!! I'm new to this forum but experienced as far as the cosmos roams LoL! I just acquired a brand new LENOVO y510P 750M SLI Laptop and I'll tell you what...LENOVO is holding back on the consumer so freakingggggg much on this thing! Its a damn shame too, it really is. After going threw multiple trial and error I have accumulated all the most recent and LATEST drivers for the HARDWARE and have turned this laptop into a TOP-TIER laptop! Examples range from INTEL WiDi support to DOLBY Digital Plus drivers/software. I would love to share my driver package with anyone that cares to go threw the bounds of starting fresh and converting your Y510P into a much more feature-rich laptop then give me a holler on my email in my profile.

It's been awhile since I checked in here and now I'm back and bearing some bad news.
The hard drive it came with is now dead and I lost every piece of information on it. I recommend everyone replaces it asap as it is a slow hdd and has a short lifespan for the heat this laptop produces.
Now I'm really considering installing my OS onto an SSD, but I'm guessing the stock SSD is not big enough (WHICH IS SO STUPID) which means I need a new SSD along with HDD.
Suggestions? -

anybody update to windows 10?
If you do the update and need to reformat later on will it be windows 10 that will be recovered? I guess our windows 8 cd key will work for windows 10 after the upgrade?Last edited: Jun 2, 2015 -
and i have the ultrabay slot empty now . I could buy a GeForce 750M from Ebay but, to be honest, i'm quite scared to try that after what i experienced . I'm playing Witcher 3 at the moment and the GPU temperature is 97C almost all the time , it works fine but i'm not too confident about adding the 2nd GPU after my previous problem . Also , i'm not sure if it's really worth it , fps wise , if someone is playing Witcher 3 with this system i will be grateful if he will tell me how the game runs with and without the SLI enabled .

well, the game is quite demanding on resources ,i'm curious about the performance and temperatures , i'm a bit afraid after what i experienced .

You experienced some kind of electrical short or electrical surge. It sounds like your power adapter failed, sent a surge of power to your laptop, and fried the motherboard. That is absolutely caused by an equipment failure of some sort. In fact, I would recommend you replace your power adapter, to prevent it from happening again and frying your new replacement motherboard.
If your computer is under load, the absolute worst thing that could happen is that the CPU / GPU thermal protection kicks in, and either clocks down or shuts down the overheating CPU / GPU. In an extreme worst-case scenario, if you were in the middle of a 2 hour Witcher gaming session, and your CPU / GPU cooling were to just entirely fail at that exact moment, then your laptop would simply crash or power off. It should never power surge and damage components. -
thanks for info , back then i uploaded photos with my "problem" , there are on page 402 of this thread - you can check them out , i'm not sure how the adapter can melt those two connectors ( from the motherboard and the 2nd GPU) , i belive that something else will crash first on the motherboard, i don't know what to think of this problem that i had but it kind of scared me regarding the temperatures of the 2nd gpu and what might happen. Nevertheless , i did not noticed other people having a similar problem so i hope it was something wrong with one of the connectors .
-
The fact that you heard a noise from your power adapter FIRST, and then later noticed a burning plastic smell... that all points to some component in your power adapter failing, causing a power surge, that ended up damaging some part of your motherboard near the ultrabay module.
The damage you showed is NOT caused by heat damage. Heat damage would look much different. Heat damage would be much more extensive, and not localized to just one spot. Heat damage would also start near heat-generating parts (CPU, GPU, and other major heat-generating high-current components), and then spread out from there. Heat damage would not be localized to just one spot that is located far away from the heat-generating components. The damage you show in pictures is most likely electrical damage.
So I'd highly recommend you replace your power adapter as well. I'd hate to see you spend $100's on replacing a motherboard, only to have that motherboard get fried 2 weeks from now because you never really replaced the origin of the power surge problem. -
ok, thanks , my idea was : if the adapter will cause a power surge, why will that affect the 2nd gpu? Aren't other components on the motherboard that will burn first and protect all the auxiliaries ? i'm just asking, i don't know exactly how it works , optically speaking - the power enters top left and the second gpu is the last component , on the right of the motherboard
( i hope i'm not saying something too silly) . Regarding the sound from the adapter : that sound was signaling a short circuit i guess, after starting, it never ceased . Every time i connected the adapter , the sound was starting . After replacing the motherboard , everything went back to normal.
I used the laptop for 15 months without any problems and with the SLI inactive, after i enabled SLI - in a couple of days i got the " joy " .
Now, i'm using it for a month a so, it looks fine (with the ultrabay empty ).Last edited: Jun 17, 2015
