Y510p usually come with 2.5" hdd and m2 ssd (as cache drive). There is an optional hdd ultrabay that can hold additional 2.5" hdd or ssd.

Thanks for the response, but when you say usually you mean some models have it and some don't ?

Some Y510P models come with a M.2 cache drive installed and some do not. If a Y510P does not have one of these drives then before buying one you have to open up your computer to make sure the motherboard has the appropriate socket installed. Some motherboards have this and some do not.

If that socket exists on your board, here is one of the best things to install there.

    Greetings, all,

I'm having a hard time determining if my y510p, model 59370005, can support a removable graphics card for SLI. How can I determine if I can SLI with the removable card using this model? I haven't been able to find any documentation out there.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the response, by the way I didn't buy the laptop yet, I'm going to buy one of these two in this page:

IdeaPad Y510p High-Performance 15.6" Multimedia Laptop from Lenovo | Lenovo (US)

    59405673 OR 59405668

So I'm wondering if they will have the soket since they are new?
another question is there a difference between Glossy Wedge and Glossy ?

I mistakenly downloaded the conduit infection again. Pretty sure I have gotten rid of it but one thing is questioning me. In Task Manager under processes the process "system" uses about 1-3% while playing BF4, is that normal? I cant remember seeing it at that.

Only reason im questioning it is because last time i had conduit im pretty sure it was spiking the system process up to 5% or 10% (i cant remember exactly)

Will I am debating installing Windows 7 x64 to my Lenovo. Windows 8 is giving me a headache. Randomly it doesn't want to boot right and I need to force shutdown and turn it back on. I've tried restore, factory restore, and disabling fast startup (don't need it for an SSD and read that it gives startup issues from time to time.) I don't know what to do. I did have Windows 7 on it briefly (A few days) and it didn't do this, but then I decided to switch back to 8. Now I think I'm starting to regret it. I like 8, but it doesn't seem to like me. Does anyone else have any ideas before I attempt to re-install Windows 7? I'm gonna hold off for a little bit to see if something else idea wise comes up.

that's what I disabled, I'll edit for clarity, sorry. I'm still debating as it is a lot of work to re-install everything to it. And I do like Windows 8. I have a Radar app and a few other apps that are nice to use in a quicky.

So you actually did change your screen with a FHD one? Do you mind to give a quick guide?I would like to do the same but unlike the y500 looks like to change the lcd on the y510p you need to make it by pieces..at least according with manual i have.

Hello, does anyone of you tried the script to enable the dust cleaner running all the time? Does it help with the heat issues?

i have been looking through every forum to see if anyone has done that, but no luck.

and yes the system gets really cool when the fan spins at max speed.

the strange thing about this system is that when it hits 100C the fan only spins at 70% its max rpm. not sure why they did that.

and i know it can go faster, because the dust removal button on the power management software that comes with this laptop is able to spin the fan at 100% rpm

    EDIT:

you can beg and plead with unclewebb, and just maybe he takes it on.

Hi! This is what I'm talking about: Re: Y510p Ultimate Cooling Mods Revealed...Unshrou... - Lenovo Community

he said that it's a script to run the dust removal continuously. But I dont have my Y510P yet to test, and I am wondering if it could potentially burn the fans in the long run?

EDIT: The first part is the shrouding of the plastic, proceed to the bottom to see the script that I am talking about

ok, i did what Erni3 suggested in this forum and it works!

when playing battlefiled 4 my system would hit 100C in a few minutes, but with the fan modified to run in dust removal mode, i never hit 100C and hence no throttling.

    there is a 5C drop.

and it only took me a minute to set it up.

regarding the fan durability, i plan to get extended warranty, so if something were to happen in the three years, i am covered.

plus, this is what Erni3 had to say, "ssjmec, I had the same thought about running gpu fans full throttle when I built my first gaming rig quite a few years ago. I overclocked the [kittens] out of it and ran the fan @ 100% to take care of the heat. Years later my brother has the rig and it's still working just fine at full fan speed. Good fans can outlive a computer, when they do fail, they just get noisy. I have never seen a pc fan just stop spinning. The program I wrote doesn't actually control the fan, it literally runs the dust removal software Lenovo provides and waits for it to complete its cycle, then it clicks the ok button, then the start button to repeat the process... over and over until you exit the program. The dust removal program runs the fan for about 11sec then off for about 2sec. so its running @ about 85% duty cycle. most fans are rated between 30,000-45,000 hours of service before they become noisy and worn out. @85% duty cycle it would take about 4 years to reach the noisy point. And thats if we ran it 24/7. "

Good to hear! Do you also use a cooling fan or just elevate the bottom of your laptop? And any other cooling mods you applied? Did you re-paste the thermal?

i do have a cooling pad that lifts the laptop by 3 inches and it comes with two movable fans, but they are not very effective.

i use throttlestop 24x7 to lower my CPU voltage, and more importantly, disable some of the parameters lenovo has set on the y510p. i have not really tested the voltage effectiveness, but i have noticed 2-3C drop in temps. you should check this forum out:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...arket-upgrades/531329-throttlestop-guide.html

i would like to apply the thermal paste, but doing it on my own would void the warranty, and lenovo will not dispatch somebody to apply it.

    Hi guys !

Just ordered a GT755M Ultrabay and 170W charger from eBay ( ing finally, might I add ). Just wondering, no non-SLI y510p users who bought the Ultrabay had any trouble with it like the users which had GT750M and couldn't get the Ultrabay to work, right ? I've been skimming through Lenovo forum and this topic and nobody reported aftermarket purchase of GT755M Ultrabay not working so I guess my purchase is safe.

What shall I do after I recieve my GT755M ? After I plug it in do I need to do something special ? Ty !

Is there a huge difference between using the m.2 sata as a cache drive vs installing the OS in it?

Yes there is. As a caching drive, the M.2 is assigned to run only your most commonly used programs, so most of the time you'll be relying of the speed of your HDD. If the OS is installed on the M.2 it (along with any programs also installed on the drive) will be able to utilize the full speed of the SSD. That being said if you want to use the M.2 as an OS drive, I'd recommend a 128GB model.

After being delayed for the 4th time on my Razer 14 (2014), I think it's time for me to start looking elsewhere for a new laptop.

I currently use a Lenovo T430s for both work and gaming. While the T430s excels in work-related stuff, the gaming aspect is (as expected) quite weak.

Does anyone use their Y510P for both gaming and work, what's your opinion on both aspects? How is the keyboard and trackpad, are they comparable to the Thinkpad line?

    Thanks all!
    Mike

    Keyboard = Amazing
Trackpad = Average with proper drivers running.

I usually use a wireless mouse so I couldn't tell you about the trackpad for work, but in terms of using it for both gaming and work, it has done extremely well for me.

Thanks for the information. I've grown so used to my Thinkpad's exception keyboard and trackpoint that I find it hard to type on any other laptop. Case in point my wife's 2013 MB Air feels sloppy while I type and the trackpad, while smooth and accurate, is a hassle having to reach down to access it.

Having both a ThinkPad and a Y510p, I can tell you that the trackpad on the Thinkpad is FAR better. However, thankfully the keyboard on the Y510p is quite good, a huge step up from the bad keyboard on the Y580.

I use my Y510p for work all day long, just get an external mouse, and you'll be set to go.

Also, I am having a problem for anyone that can help.

I have connected an external monitor to my Y510p via HDMI. The laptop never moves, and so the cables stay plugged in all the time. I have also already set power options to do nothing when the lid is closed.

However, during a cold boot, the Lenovo picture shows on the laptop's screen, with the rotating circle. This screen then goes, and it then stays black, and does nothing, causing me to force power it off.

Anyone know why? Does anyone else use theirs with an external monitor?

So my new ultrabay GPU came in (the 650m GN35) and its fan does work. The card itself works, but the fan doesn't spin under any circumstances. Is there anyway I can fix it with a little surgery, or do I have to get it exchanged?

Could somebody with a y510p with GT755M SLI provide me with the device ID for their internal and Ultrabay card? The Nvidia drivers accept two different values for Device ID for the 755M and I want to make sure I'm looking at the correct one.

    Mine say 380017aa on both

Have to say I'm quite happy with this replacement. It's been cool and quiet so far, and speedy as well. Not a big fan of the multilingual keyboard (some keys have no less than 5 different functions). And yes, they did give me the glossy screen. I'm not too worried, as I'll be using HDMI most the time anyway. This model does have the beefier battery, however :)

Just took out my 755m Ultrabay and did the re-paste and spacer mod trick. GPU Temps never got above 70c while running 3D mark Cloud Gate test and my score jumped from ~13600 to 16222! No more throttling! Woot! One of the GDDR ram modules didn't even have a thermal pad (so I added one) and the others had the pads miss-aligned. Also notice how much thermal compound is on the GPU.

Hey guys, has anyone noticed GPU performance hits when playing games with energy management's battery setting configured for optimized battery health? It doesn't make sense to me that such a setting would have any performance impact, but a friend of mine with a Y500 said that his graphics performance was improved when he disabled the option.

Nope, absolutely no difference here. Just don't play while the battery is running down as it will force 2D clocks until it actually reaches that 60% charge level.

Diagnose using the colors, then "Fix My Screen" (It rapidly flashes every pixel). It worked for a "dead" pixel I had on a 21 inch monitor.

    LCD repair v2.0

However, I don't think your problem is a dead pixel. It looks like a defect in the back light.

How long should I leave it running?

I leave it for 2 hours and it didn't help.
Viewing it closer it looks more like some dust particle inside the screen.
I will call tomorrow to Lenovo and ask for a guarantee replacement.
