It takes time for it to cache the appropriate boot files. Try booting a couple times after an hour or so

    Hello!

Thank you for posting these photos! The NGFF drives will be coming out in 22mm width and 42mm, 60mm, 80mm, and 110mm length. There appears to be room past the screw in your photos but they are kind of dark. Would you do a huge favor and measure the base of the connector to the end of the cavity to see how much extra room is in there?

Would be best to use a ruler and measure in cm (centimeters) and then we can convert to mm.

I'm thinking the longer drives can just lay on top of the screw mount hole and can be modified some other way to stay in place.

    Thanks in advance!

Does the laptop make a lot of noise and heat when gaming or when just using the web and such?

Yes, it would be awesome if we could get a measurement. For those of you who know of the Asus G46VW laptop, multiple users used tape to hold down their msata's and it works flawlessly as long as you can get it to stay. If there is enough room, perhaps longer ngff ssd's can be used/inserted in.

Actually I'm quite surprised at how silent it is even while running full load. Lenovo did a great job with heat dissipation and keeping noise to a minimum. You might hear the fans kick in during full gpu load with heavy games but in all it's barely noticeable.

I just played some Battlefield 3, and it was pretty bad.... I was only able to play for like 20 minutes. I played on Ultra and got very good fps (40-60fps)

    1. Runs WAY to damn hot!! Both sides of the laptop was blowing out burning out air that literally burns my fingers. I had to keep my hand (and mouse) about 6-7 inches away from the laptop because it literally burned my thumb. As I am typing now, my thumb feels like it was burned and hurts a bit. The air was being blown out very hard? (if thats a good way to put it), basically what im trying to say is the heat reached easily 5-6 inches on the right side and even more on the left. The left side was even hotter and it seriously burns right away if you touch the vent.

    2. Even though I was getting 40-60 fps in Battlefield 3, there is no way it actually was getting that. I know what Battlefield 3 feels like with 45 and 60 fps, its smooth as butter. But with this, it felt like I was playing at around 30-40 fps. It was really weird and I will definitely be running more tests on it, but something felt wrong. The only way it felt buttery smooth like 60fps was if I put the game in low-medium and I got around 80fps. This literally doesnt even make sense since the obvious that a human eye can not see a difference from 60fps to anything higher.

So now im really upset and confused about this machine. My old MSI GT60 NEVER got that hot, even is I played Metro on ultra for 3 hours (which only got like 15fps) it never would get this hot, its not just it being hot, its the fact that this machine got that hot a minute after i started Battlefield 3. So if anyone has any input on this, feel free to contribute. Thanks.

For temperatures... I'd recommend first running a GPU temperature monitoring application, and seeing what the actual measured GPU temperatures are. If the temperatures are too high, then the problem is a defective laptop that needs to be addressed under warranty. If the GPU temperatures are normal, then you can probably try adjusting the positioning of your hand/mouse, or getting a laptop cooler pad to put underneath the laptop.

Turn Vsync off as a test.

You are either running into input lag due to frame buffering, or you are running into SLI configuration microstutter. Both situations can be tested and easily resolved by turning Vsync off. If you can confirm that turning Vsync off improves the situation, then you have isolated the source of the problem to those two possibilities, and can start trying to troubleshoot from there.

It's worth noting that the whole argument of "the human eye can't see beyond 30 / 60 fps" is not valid for computer gaming, because that assumes that you are passively sitting there watching passive video playback. When you are gaming, your brain has additional input based on mouse & keyboard motion. And if those keyboard / mouse motions do not match what you see on screen, then your brain will interpret it as lag.

You can test this yourself by recording your gameplay footage using something like FRAPS. Play a game like Battlefield 3 at 60fps, where you experience in-game input lag. And then watch the video playback, and see if you can still see where the game felt "laggy" to you. I'll bet that you cannot feel the "lag," once you remove the keyboard & mouse motion from the equation.

About the heavy heat situation Albake21 is reporting, i was wondering:

It is ok if i play on the laptop for long time (hours)? Using a wireless Xbox controler (so my hand would not touch that heat) on a laptop table (flat) and playing with A/C on most of times? I mean even if the laptop heats that much would it still be ok?

I have on mind playing BF4 on ultra if posible and 1080p. And to use it instead of a PS4 / Xbox One.

    Thanks a lot.

Would have to unbox it and check it out. Trach pad and keyboard should be fine. All the stock drivers should work okay. If anything is wrong like wifi or track pad only fix is a driver update. Not sure about heat seem to be some conflicting reports on that issue. Heat is always an issue with gaming laptops.

Couple things. I avoided the burning hands situation by elevating laptop on a good cooling pad(yes, I'm getting burnt just like you are). This doesn't work while travelling, but on trips, it's usually on my lap and the mouse is on the couch/bed anyways. Turning off SLI when not needed also helps because the right fan(where your mouse is) turns off

Assuming you were measuring your framerates, you are almost definitely experiencing microstutter. This is the most frustrating thing about SLI configurations. I know it's gotten better than it was 4 years ago, but it still exists and there's really no way to defeat it without targeting >60fps. I too run into this problem with games like BF3 and Skyrim(in outdoor areas mostly). Think of it this way - you're using two mid range cards and setting the graphics at highest level. Each card by itself could probably get 30-35fps normally and then lag to 20-30fps when you read an area with a lot of high res textures and motion. When they run in SLI, each card targets processing alternating frames and then outputs it to your screen. So they are in sync and should run great as long as the output is >60fps. Anything under that the human eye can detect(Some people claim to see higher which I'm sure is possible). So if you're running a game at 60fps on a single card configuration and suddenly get a drop to 50fps, the card would drop 10 frames randomly in that second and the human eye might see it(or might not). The frames could be all dropped in a row withiin that second, in which you would be most likely to notice, but if they were dropped evenly throughout that second, it would look a lot smoother and be harder to notice. In an SLI configuration, both cards are putting out 30fps each(60 together) and each suddenly drops to 25fps or worse one drops to 20fps and the other stays at 30fps. Remember they are processing alternating frames? So one card could be doing it's job perfectly, processing 30fps in alternating frames to simulate 60fps, but the other card is missing frames and is becoming out of sync with the first card. This results in a(for lack of a better term) vibration looking lag called microstutter. So to sum up, even though fraps reports 40-60fps, it certainly isn't the same 40-60fps you sould see from a single gpu. I can't say it's better or worse though - it's just different. You're used to lag a certain way because you always have had a single gpu. Now things are different. It drives me crazy still and I'd rather have a single gpu, but the Y500 was do dirt cheap I couldn't resist. The best way to alleviate it is to turn shadows down and vsync off to try to boost that framerate to 60fps. Also remember that some games are NOT compatible with SLI at all. Others are buggy as well(Dragon Age for example). Hope this helps and wasn't too confusing.

This laptop was originally an i5 Y500 with dual GT650M cards. It ran warm but not hot. I got mine about 2 months ago. 2-3 weeks later, they released the i7 version with GT750M SLI. I returned my old one and got that instead. It ran hotter but was still tolerable. Now you have the new CPU and they probably have the same cooling system. The temps I'm seeing people report are way hotter than mine(especially on the CPU side). They aren't temps that would throttle you but they certainly will force the laptop to blow burning air out the sides. I used to laugh at their cooling fan ultrabay accessory, because it was always unnecessary. Now it seems it might be useful to some.

Very interesting read, thanks for sharing and keep us updated. My Y500 got a little too hot for my taste when running 1.1v bios and overclocked to 1250/2600. If it is indeed the same cooling as the Y500 then I can see why you are having temp issues. Good one Lenovo. At least your touchpad works right? Try running Furmark and see if your gpu throttles.

Personally, I've never used cooling fans. There really is no need to spend extra for that. A properly designed laptop can handle the heat and I wouldn't game while having it on my lap anyways.

That said, a single GPU solution is almost always better. SLI config on 15 inch chassis with a high-end CPU ... 3 major heat sources. Yep, that's the recipe for overheating especially when you push GPUs like that.

I definitely recommend his suggestion. It's really only ~$20, but reviews everywhere have remarked it cools efficiently as some crazy cooler called Strikeforce, priced at ~$80.
I currently own 2, one for my y510p, and one for my xbox. Again, definitely recommend.

Received my laptop last night. I believe it's awesome. Will admit, it did get very warm, very quickly.
I opened up the Nvidia control panel. Look what I found! I hope it's actually accurate.

Just chatted with a lenovo rep.
    me: asked where it went.

Rep: That model is Out of stock.

    me: for how long?

Rep: As of now there is no update on when this model will be back again.

me: what about when you will get the gt750m ultrabay back in stock?

Rep: I am really sorry, I wish I could answer you on this but there is no update on these models.

Hopefully just ran out of stock on the ultrabay 750m's

You're gonna feel a little dumb for this one - when you see the 510 model page, click "next" and you'll see the SLI model. They put it at the end since it's the most expensive during this promotion, most likely.

I spoke to a handful of reps yesterday regarding when the y510p drivers will be available, most of them have NO idea what's going on. One rep said "so you're asking about the WIFI laptop product?" instead of what I said, "y510". They really had no idea. I'm going to email the rep who I purchased the machine from to ask about a.) when the drivers will be released and b.) if older ultrabay cards, specifically the fan, will fit. The problem on here is that people are quoting reps who really don't know what they're talking about, and unknowingly giving us completely false info. In an online chat yesterday, one rep said "I don't actually know the answer so I won't give you a fake answer that would make you happy like other reps would". Also, for those here who had a ship date of the 12th (for the 510p), did it actually ship yet?

Hi I ordered one Y510P SLI 36h ago and it has already been shipped I should receive it the 14th in Florida. Myself I won't be able to try it before the 17th I think :-/

For your information there are some new coupons on the website. It's even cheaper than a few days ago : you can ask the support to get back the difference in a 21 days period if I remember well...

So can anyone comment that when the nvidia drivers for the 750m are available that the heat problem may get better. I know it would be speculating if answered but I'm just wondering if updated drivers might fix some of the y510p heat problem.

I had the same problem on mine playing the one game I have within reach: Skyrim. Played on High, full res, high res texture packs, everything turned up, and windowed. Second GPU would hit 95/96 easily, comp would be pretty quiet (used to a constant din from my fan on my last MSI) and the keypad would be hot to touch :(. After about four-five days of gaming (as in last night), the temps just dropped. Played Skyrim on ultra this morning and both sat around mid-60s with no apparent drop in FPS. Burn-in?

I think he means putting your mouse hand in the line of fire of the right vent. It hurts after a few minutes. I had to elevate my laptop from my hand on my desk. It's not terrible but certainly uncomfortable otherwise

I still wonder, it is bad if the laptops heats much? Other than burning your hand? Like the laptop getting damaged or something? (i play with a wireless Xbox controler)

Mine went from an estimated shipping date of June 15th to June 17th.
I think they realized that they can't ship anything on Saturdays :p I hope they ship it on the 14th instead :D
