I'm more concerned by the people around me when it comes to noise. Notebookreview says there's automatic throttling apparently.

I only get throttling if I run the fans at a slower RPM to keep the noise down. 35% fans are quiet, some throttling but still getting 60+ fps in FC Primal. -

There's some inbuilt tool for fan speed right?

I'm actually downgrading from the Clevo P775DM3-G
It's way too heavy, large, the build quality is not as good as major brands offer.
I'm going from a 6700k and GTX 1080 with the 3K 120hz screen to the aorus x5 v6 and I'm excited.
I don't game at 4k and I never used the power I had.
I could lock all four cores to 4.2+ GHz...But I don't think I'll miss that.
The aorus is literally the only laptop I would even consider because of the 6820hk/1070 combination...Matched with the 120hz screen at 15.6"
From my research there is no other laptop like that.MiSJAH likes this. -
Took forever to come. But I've got it and these are my initial impressions....
Very slim, even though I was expecting that. Feels and looks great.
FHD 120hz screen isn't perfect...Some gamma issues and a bit of a blue tinge. Certainly could use a good calibration.
I've had the 3K 120hz 5ms (x7 V6/p775dm3)screen and found that it was not as fast as 5ms. Notebookcheck has a review of that screen which states that as well.
I'm happy to say that this 15.6" 5ms screen is truly fast. I've had the X34 and ROG 27" monitors which were fast and this feels just like that!
I'm confident that once more of these screens go around there will be some testing which will prove the response rate of the panel.
Touchpad:. Coming from the MSI titan sli touchpad and the standard Clevo issue touchpad...I'll give this Aorus one a 10/10. Wow, what a relief to have a premium feeling experience everytime i use it.
Keyboard is alright, no real complaints. Travel is better than Clevo anyway.
I'm not the rainbow pulsating breathing keyboard kind of guy so I'll skip that part.
Fan control-. Finally a fully adjustable fan profile. Any ℅ maximum you choose. Even automatic with a ℅ maximum fan as well.
On full max fan this is quieter than the P775DM3 and Cooler booster 3 on MSI.
It's a wooshing of air sound. Relaxing, effective. None of that whining or bearing sounds that Clevo crappy fans can have.
CPU- i gave up a 6700k for the 6820hk to have a half as thick laptop and alot less weight...No regrets so far...The command center is great! Easily choose 4.0ghz and use hardware info to show that all 4 cores are in fact overclocked.
I'm going to sell this within two years...I don't need a silicone lottery/ non-bga cpu. I don't compete in benchmarks. It was important for me to properly identify what kind of consumer I am. I am ok with BGA as long as it's overclockable and doesn't overheat while it's holds that clock.
GPU, - I only play a few games and they max out at 120fps on ultra so it's difficult to compare to my P775DM3 with the GTX 1080.( Which I'm happily selling)
Sound is good. This is the first laptop I've seen with speaker on the sides as well as the top. The stereo effect is quite prominent. In shooting games I can really tell where the sounds are coming from.
The subwoofer does seem to work, just enough punch for a little laptop.
Performance- I'm not going to say this is the perfect laptop but it's what I wanted. A powerful portable package that is made with pride and style. Gigabyte knows how to make a motherboard for this unit and get the most out of it. The cooling solution seems very well done. I notice the cpu idles in the 30's overclocked to 4.0ghz while the GPU actually idles in the high 40's. This surprised me a little.
I've only had time to play one game and the fans didn't seem to go very high compared to their maximum. ( I was sitting it on a cooler).
Temps were in the 60's.. I haven't tried 1440p on any monitors yet so I don't think I've taxed the GPU much.
I sent an email to Aorus asking what thermal paste they use on the GPU/cpu...No response yet.
I'm going to order a 230 watt PSU from Aorus. I'd like to have faith in gigabytes motherboard magic but 200 watts just seems low for a 6820/1070 combination.
One bonus is that the power adapter has a unusually long Cord length between the adapter and the laptop.
I can actually put the adapter on the floor beside my desk while it's plugged into the laptop. Maybe that's normal for some but I haven't had such luck yet.
In a few months I'll post another review of my opinion. Please note this is a first 24 hour review...So I don't really know this machine well.
P.s
The little 3M stick on retractable feet that come with the lappy are pretty neat. I'm surprised more manufacturers don't offer that.

How do you find the weight/portability of the laptop? To me, since it seems a little deeper than most laptops due to the forward sitting hinge and the exhaust grills at the back, that it compromises a little in that department?MiSJAH likes this. -

What about the screen from a productivity perspective? Don't care to much for color accuracy unless it is very off but graininess, low brightness, poor viewing angles etc are a killer. What about battery times? I guess yours is a GSync version as it has the 120 hz panel? Only GSync available in my part of the world, would really prefer to get one with optimus support instead. -
And what about battery times? Since there is no GSync, I'm worried that it will kill battery runtimes.
-
I haven't run extensive battery tests.
I don't really have the time. I notice that at 50 ℅ brightness,on battery, the
Power meter says 4.5 hours left. I doubt this is true...Probably the 3.5 Aorus states is more likely. At 100℅ brightness the power meter says 1.7 hours. The command center is set to power saving mode when on battery and that is without the overclock on the cpu. I don't think there's a bigger battery available on any laptop out there.
In my opinion, the screen has excellent viewing angles left to right and moderate viewing angles top to bottom. Compared to an old GT70 Dominator pro with TN panel, this might as well be IPS.
The screen is really bright. Probably too bright. I used a gamma calibration tool to create a custom ICC profile. The default windows sRGB color profile seems to create a blue tint to the screen. The program I used allowed me to pull the color scheme from the edid instead and now colors look way better. I can post my created .ICM file for anyone who buys this laptop with the FHD screen. Always good to try different color profiles till one catches your eye.
Important to note--- if you've heard about the other 120hz panel @ 1440p/17.3" floating around..With the horizontal lines...This panel doesn't exhibit that. It's also really truly fast.
I have the other forementioned screen on my Clevo and although I'm not bothered by the lines at all ( hard to see them)...They are there nonetheless.ranjim, bwolmarans, improwise and 1 other person like this. -
I got my X5 recently and I absolutely love the device with only one major complaint, the wireless receiver is absolute garbage. I have to be within 20 feet of router or else speeds will drop to bytes per second.
-
Is there any way to run on hybrid mode? It seems as though the laptop would have monster battery life if it didn't have to run on the dedicated graphics card all the time.
-
-
I know double shot still works without the software, I'm not sure how the packets are handled though. I gotta say, having the same card in my Clevo, that the wireless is about 25% slower on the Aorus. If I had to guess...Everything may get cut back abit to meet that 200w target.
Btw, I'll be running some 240w adapters soon and I'll use a power meter to measure just how much power can be pulled running a stress test.hmscott likes this. -
Well, this thing has the potential to be a beast. Im not sure how the Alienware 15 R3 checks out, probably similar overclocking capability with a much better bios.
This bios is dumbed down so ridiculously that you cant even change intel speedstep options or really anything at all.
This isnt too much of a problem for some though because the power limits are unlocked for the 6820hk ( probably so xtu can do what command control asks)
Which means that those that want to use throttlestop can set the power limit higher than the 55 watts that command control app allows for the supposed 4.0ghz overclock.
The Aorus preset for 4.0 ghz isnt quite 4.0 and downclocks quickly to 3.6 on all cores once an AAA game loads up. 3.6 is still much better than the stock 3.2.
But of course we want the full 4.0ghz and for it to hold and not tdp or thermal throttle.
So, we need command control app for the amazing fan control but xtu has to be installed for the command app to work...so xtu will do its thing on startup and load whatever preset clock you have for the processor. To get around this I use throttlestop set to 4.0 ghz with a 65 watt power max but i run it from task scheduler with a 1 minute delay. Xtu does its thing on startup and sets the pretend overclock to 4.0 ghz, then 1 min later throttlestop overides it and voila! can still use command app for fan control as long as i never click on the overclock gauge or then xtu will override throttlestop. If i unplug the power and balanced mode kicks in then the clocks go down to 2.7ghz and if i plug in they go back to 4.0ghz.
Only catch is that to overclock the gpu easily with command app you need to use the overclock gauge which will activate xtu again. So i leave the gpu overclock at the highest level and never look back. The gpu downclocks the same anyway when not in use.
I use a Dell 240watt power supply for the overclocked system.
Game= Black Ops 3 on Campaign at max settings, 1080p and 120hz. ( not the 3k screen)
Cpu hold 4.0ghz the entire time. Pulls 61 watts and with fans set to auto with the fan cap set at maximum it ranges in the 68 -78 degree range.
Gpu at highest Aorus preset level is amazing at 1911mhz at full boost and it holds steady. Temps are very similar to the CPU but a few degrees higher.
The fans seem to go to about 80 % of their max. Not too loud but not quiet. These are great sounding fans anyway compared to some others.
Total system draw is sometimes in the 230 watt range. Although the Gpu recorded a max power draw of 117 watts during this test at 82% load.
I think these are very well binned cpu's and Gigabyte may well save the best for the Aorus lineup. The power supply is too small and that may be part of why they don't want the 4.0ghz to hold for anything other than web browsing. I think im going to use a 330 watt psu modified to the connector tip of Aorus and make sure i keep temps under 80 degrees.improwise, neohopper, hmscott and 1 other person like this. -
The XTU profiles that the Command & Control program uses is located in C: --> Program Files --> AORUS --> SmartManagerV3 --> cpuoc.
Profile "3600" corresponds to CPU OC setting 0, "3700" to setting 1 and so forth; and for the X5V6, "4000" which corresponds to setting 4 is located in the "X7X5V6" folder within the "cpuoc" folder. So you can install XTU and create a specific profile (for example, with all cores at 4.0 with specific voltage adjustments, etc.) and name as "4000" and place in the respective folder (and rename the original "4000" XTU profile) and Command & Control should use your customized profile on startup (when set to OC setting 4) and should stick.
[This is with the most recent versions of the Command & Control app through Drivers Update.] -
I get crashes/freezes if I try and clock past 4Ghz is this a power issue then? I'm happy to push this as hard as possible.
Where can I get a power supply for more then 230w? I tried to find out what the X7 with DT 980 used but it's not listed in the specs anywhere. -

I just wanted to update the forum that their support was prompt and fast.
backstory:
The laptop arrived today but will not power on, and there is no phone number of Aorus support so I tried calling Gigabyte support, on hold for 9 minutes with them so far. I completed the form on the gigabyte support site but didn't receive any email confirmation or anything, so hopefully they got it. I will post an update once I hear something. But powered off, it's a thing of beauty! I don't want to bash any other laptops that I was considering before, but if looks and build matter to you, this is honestly the best looking and feeling laptop I have ever seen. wish I could power it on, of course!Last edited: Feb 28, 2017 -

I am trying one last driver now, if that doesn't work I'm turning off the laptop for now. I have pm'd the killer rep on this forum, and I will wait 24 hrs. If it is not resolved by then I am sending this back to newegg and getting a refund this time, not a replacement. -
Will replacing the killer card with an Intel one fix this? -
-
I think the killer software conflicts with something to do with Aorus running software. ( My guess)
I don't run the software and it works fine but it's significantly slower wifi the farther away I get from the router
Maybe the wifi antenna in the display bezel isn't very good?hmscott likes this. -
yes I suspect one likely reason is a mistake in the RF design of the wifi of this laptop and there is passive or active inteference going on. And it may depend on the individual laptop tolerance itself, as obviously some people it seems to work fine. Or prehaps they are on very slow internet links and they don't notice but who has a 256Kb/s slow internet link these days?

Hello, guys. Was really close to buying this before from Newegg and from what @bwolmarans experienced, it's a hit and miss in getting good laptops out of the box. That's why I wanted to ask for help in basic troubleshooting/testing once I buy my x5 v6 from Newegg.
Aside from the not so usual faulty keys and the very common killer card not working properly, what other tests should I run? And if ever I find anything wrong, will Newegg replace/refund it for me or do I have to do an RMA request with Aorus itself?hmscott likes this. -
the keyboard is great with my laptop.
no faulty keys.
I think the n key was a little tight, but after less than 24 hours of typing all keys work perfectly now.
Using the auros fusion software I have remapped the number pad keyboard to up down left right and copy/cut/paste so I can do those quickly.
I really like the keyboard!
And I am sure that buying a relatively inexpensive (cheap) intel 8260 m.2 wifi card and puttig that in would fix the wifi problem

OK here is my unofficial review, now having had the laptop about 30 hours. I am focusing on details I didn't think were covered enough in other reviews, so I won't do walkaround or screeshots.
1. keyboard
very good. it is shallow, meaning, the keys are probably 1mm lower than on any other laptop I've used. Every other laptop keyboard the top of the key is slightly above the palmrest. on this laptop, the top of keys are probably 0.25mm below the palmrest. This was weird at first but seems OK now. Keys are quite stiff. There is a lot of resistance to get them moving. I don't have a problem with that, but it is weird, and again unlike any keyboard on any laptop I've ever used. I will not focus on the lighting as that has been covered. The fusion keyboard software let me remap the number pad to up/down/left/right copy/cut/paste which is AWESOME. width: keyboard is nice and wide! look at alienware 15 it has this tiny little keyboard with an inch and a half of unused real estate on either side. My n key is a bit sticky. For the first few hour of typig (see it just stuck there) it would not activate. But it seems to be getting better. I have to press it directly down and not from the side. I hope it get better completely as I type very fast normally.
Actually it is not getting better. And now I switch back to my lenovo t450s and realize the Aorus keyboard is too stiff and unforgiving unless you push key down at 90 degrees exactly it is never going to be very good for typing on which makes me a little bit sad, but the joy of having proper lighting ( I have left keyboard orange, except for alt, function, control and volume up/down and brightness up/down functions keys - I make these all bright blue! Enter key and shift I make red. It is AWESOME. Life changing almost, it is so good!! ) Others have said the individual key coloring is a gimmick, I would say it is not gimmick, it is very useful functionality.
2. trackpad is awesome. I don't see how anyone could complain about it. It is big and smooth. my only complaint would be it is very stiff to activate the lower-left left click and lower-right right click. very stiff meaning, you need to press very hard. That's not a big deal for me, just mentioning it.
3. fans. I tried fans on highest setting and they are the loudest laptop fans I have ever heard but it's a nice sound - a very loud woosh sound with no whine or bearing noise. but other than manually setting the fan to highest I have been unable to get the fans to be that loud in the only game I have played, fallout 4 on ultra. Playing on ultra the fans do come on, and you can hear them, you have to turn your sound up to about 30% then I don't hear the fan noise. Sitting typing this the fans are on and I can hear them, again it is a soft woosh and not annoying at all to me. When I pick up the laptop with the screen open and tilt it 30 degrees left or right the left fan rubs slightly against something. very slightly. I don't think it would damage the fan but it's a small annoyance.
4. battery. this runs down fast, I guess others have covered it. I was hoping for some miracle but nope, gets about 2, maybe 3 hours tops of non-gaming tops.
5. size: this thing is wider and deeper than my dell M4600 workstation, which I thought was pretty big. Having said that, it fits perfectly in my 15" laptop bag.
6. build quality: I don't think enough has been written about how well it is built. this could stop a tank. The thick aluminum screen has almost no flex meaning with the laptop on my lap when I try to flex the scree, the whole laptop moves around on my lap instead. notebookcheck review mentioned flimsy hinges, they don't seem particularly flimsy but maybe not as beefy as my old dell.
7. screen. It only opens to 140 degrees which is not much. I didn't think this would be a big deal, but actually it's already been a bit annoying. The inner lip of the bezel has a rubber ridge to mate perfectly with the bezel around the keyboard surface when screen is closed, which is a very nice touch, and again goes to the build quality. As others have said, this is a TN screen but for me I cannot tell a huge difference in color and viewing angle between this screen and my old dell workstation m4600 which had a high quality IPS screen when I put them side-by-side. The blacks are not very deep on this screen at all. They will be grey, unless brightness turned down to minimum. That's OK. Speaking of brightness, this screen is brighter than the sun. You would strap this to front of your car and drive down the highway with car lights off, this is how bright this screen is.
8. killer 1535 wifi has some issues for sure. for me they are almost show stopper. it probably will work fine but only on 5Ghz band. On my home network with 2.4Ghz it sucks bad, I have to sit less than 5 meters from my home wifi router for it to work properly. this is using latest drivers and with/without killer bandwidth software makes no difference to this. in fact it I think it was probably exactly the same with the original drivers. I have emailed killer support and provided them the log files and will see what their response is. I don't expect they will have a fix, but if they do, I will post it here.
9. gaming this is limited to fallout 4, as the slow wi-fi troubleshooting meant it was the only game I could download and that took 8 hours easily until I realized I had to put the laptop 2 meters from my wifi router and then it speeded up. At first, it looked great but had tearing. that was for the first couple of hours. I closed the game, looked for any settings it had in display options of game, there were none. So poking around in nvidia control panel I saw v-sync was off unless game itself sets it on so I set that on, actually for fast-sync. After turning this on all tearing went away that I could see.Last edited: Mar 11, 2017CedricFP, hmscott, ranjim and 1 other person like this. -
I am going to keep using the laptop for a few more days. I already ordered a 8260 card that should arrive in a couple of days but I am not going to put it in because I may end up wanting to return (a) and (b) I want to see if Killer support can help. Aorus support can not help for this issue, they are nice folks, but their support boils down to one word: RMA.

So many people get through the issues, when someone doesn't and they make a big deal about it, it doesn't get much traction from those that know what's what - but it can prejudice those that don't.
You have a cheap ISP router / AP, it's not new - they want to send you a new one, right? Either let them, and then get them to send you one configured off normal default channels with High Power enabled. Or, get your own components - router / modem.
A cheap ISP router / wifi is typically the culprit in these incompatibility situations - along with interference it is the first thing I recommend checking / changing, solves the highest % of problems.
You can have lots of luck connecting lots of stuff to any router / AP, but when you come across an incompatibility it's not always the devices fault, technology has progressed forward and compatibility with old chipsets suffer when new protocols are added and old ones tightened up. Intel had a big problem with this in their 72xx series, they solved it in the 82xx series by loosening up stringent protocol adherence.
Killers issues started with Windows 10, and bled over to the other versions; they lost coherency keeping up with so many Windows 10 OS changes, memory problems mostly, and have been working hard ever since to keep up. I'd recommend disabling Windows 10 updates when you find a good Killer driver set so you can have some longer term stability.
Firmware updates can help, ISP's typically don't update them even though they can do it remotely because it can cause issues with some devices - when you have a pool of millions of customers with multiple devices a firmware update can cause some to fail - call in's and support costs are avoided by pushing the compatibility solutions to the customer - failed new devices.
You mentioned Aorus's only answer was RMA, and that makes sense, they need the unit to test to verify the problem - otherwise they'd only be guessing. It could actually be a bad Wifi card, I've seen that many times as the solution. Also, bad antenna connection at the card, pinched / broken antenna wire along the path around the laptop. If it's a broken antenna wire, swapping with the 8260 won't help.
Anyway, I think I've given you a good picture of the whole situation, maybe a bit condensed due to the wide coverage of the Wifi topic - lots of moving parts. If you want help stepping through the Power saving settings, adapter settings, or if you can get access to your ISP router configuration that too, please let me know and I can help you step through it.
Good luckLast edited: Mar 11, 2017MiSJAH likes this. -
The FHD version isn't available on any of the resellers here in NBR (HID, Xotic, etc) and as of the moment only Newegg USA has it in their listings.
Or would you suggest getting the unit now since most of the problems ownersof this laptop face can be solved without much technical expertise.
Also, I'll be shipping it here (Philippines) where the global warranty doesn't apply, I think. So there's another downside.hmscott likes this. -
If you have technical friend that you can call on to receive the laptop and check it out for you, handle returns and RMA, then work with them.
Otherwise, although it's more expensive, buy local. That's what I do. Everything cost $ and supporting esoteric hardware from another country costs money, help them foot the bill to provide access and support locally.
Saving money is the bane of the world right now, noone wants to pay anything for support, but they still need it.
From what I can tell Aorus is one of the few makers that I would chance buying from your position - and order an 8265 along with it, just in case.
I've had laptops over the years with poor antenna range, and I don't let it slow me down, I get an external Wifi solution and use that. For the most part I use ethernet anyway - especially at home - being a long time RF person I prefer to keep my exposure low.ranjim likes this. -
But as you said, if the only major issue I'm most likely going to face is the network card, then I'm pretty much able to fix or work around it myself and will do it once I gets it here.hmscott likes this. -
I know nobody talks about this and it's strange Aorus doesn't promote the audio on the laptop.
The speakers may not be brand name but it's 5.1 audio without the subwoofer.
Watching saving Private Ryan on Netflix with 5.1 selected is unbelievable. Bullets flying everywhere.
The center speaker puts out the bass starting at about 125hz...Not subwoofer level but decent.
An audio test online showing the placement of the speakers and verifying where the sounds are coming from indicates that Netflix isn't mistaken about the aorus having 5.1 channel capability.
I searched online for quite abit and can't find any laptop anywhere ever that has 5 seperate speakers set to surround 5.1 channel audio.
Edit:. Probably 4 speakers not 5..Maybe some digital signal processing.Last edited: Mar 12, 2017 -
Also, handling, re-packing, and shipping from them to you can take it's toll too.
I'd ask them to roll the original double boxing in several layers of bubble wrap, in both directions, and then get a large box that they fill with suspension material - to protect from large drops and potential punctures.
