You can update the bios by downloading it. So outside the update manager.
Be warned it resets all the options to stock.
Try turning off your av software

I did that already having read some comments on this forum regarding bios upgrade. Don't know why but now I'm hearing a clicking noise that happens randomly. Thinking of sending it back and get a replacement.
-
Clicking is either the fans stop starting or the hd.
Fans normal but should be really faint. Disk could be a problem

For those that own this, how annoying is the fan under gaming load?
-
No lie its loud. With headphones on its not noticeable. Everything runs very cool with no throttling.
All gaming laptops are going to be noisy - what is important is the temps

The fans aren't noticeable unless gaming.
I think you'll struggle to find a quiet one that performs! -
-
Pretty sure it's the fans stop starting
-
It's the hard drive, it's very noticeable when you are writing large files into the drive.
-
-
Thanks for the responses.
If it's a hard drive sound - does it only occur when you're writing files onto the drive? Because for me it can occur when I'm not doing much, such as watching a stream or just browsing sites.
If it's a fan sound - is this supposed to be a faint sound? The loudness of this clicking varies from being not so noticeable to quite noticeable.
If it's a problem I wouldn't hesitate to get it checked but it's difficult to replicate this clicking sound reliably since it happens so randomly without any obvious triggers. -
- a very thin white stripe, probably about a couple of pixels wide, appearing randomly, and sometimes a big one covering a third of the lower screen. Happens when I'm playing games and have tried different resolutions as well but they still do pop up. Not very often though. Have tried BlkKnight's solution with no luck and currently on Beta driver.
- everytime I watch any videos regardless of format, it takes up to 3 sec for it to start on Windows Media Player Classic that comes with K-Lite Codec and the sound starts first with the video freezing for another 2-3 seconds and only then does the video play normal. Never happened on Windows 8 and videos play well in the Video App that comes with the OS.
- Smart Update keeps showing me outdated drivers (this is a mishap on Gigabyte part)
- Lan Optimizer pops up an error message everytime it is run.
- .Net unhandled exception error pops up after first login randomly but quite often
- Explorer.exe crashes for no reason, again not very often but very annoying.
If it was a $100 netbook I would have smashed it to bits. -
I still think you need raise a tiicket for the video issues.
Have you tried vlc or mpchc for video? Klite was so last year!
Smart update will show outdated drivers if you are not running the official GB ones.
.net & explorer problems relate to your install, not gb's fault, windows sounds pooched.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk -
Been reading a lot posts over the web about explorer crashing so it's not an isolated issue per se. But the .net thing probably due to one of the softwares I installed. Will look into it later. And I did the upgrade to 8.1 straight from the windows store (or whatever it's called) directly. So I'll send them a mail or two and see what happens.
Will get back to you after giving mpchc a go. Thanks mate! -
If you can, I'd be tempted to try a win 7 install. If you pull the msata out you can quickly revert

I've taken the time to update everything via Smart Update and the only outdated drivers for me are the graphics drivers (Intel + Nvidia) so I'm ignoring them for now. I had a problem with updating the wireless driver earlier but I figured it out in the end.
One game I tried out yesterday was giving me these white horizontal stripe flickers occasionally, but I need to test it out on other games to confirm whether it's a problem with the laptop or just a graphical glitch in that particular game. -
What happens when you run 3dmark with the 770m enabled / disabled?
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk -
This is my first gaming laptop so I'm not sure what this 3Dmark is. Should I download the demo and try it out?
-
it's a benchmarking tool - which "should" show up any errors.
By running it with the 770 enabled / disabled should eliminate the screen or the 770 -
Is there a way to disable the 770 reliably or do I just go to Nvidia's control panel and change the global setting to the Intel card?
Anyway, took a while but I got the 770 enabled result: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4700MQ,GIGABYTE P25
Score seems like it's standard for a gaming laptop. -
Just read the klite codec support page, my problem seems to be a trivial one. It's only a problem with the audio decoder and since this notebook has a realtek audio and dolby (is it dolby or thx? Can't quite remember) installed, I suspect that the audio decoder is having a problem with them. Will give it a try and report back once I get home. Just in case someone else is having the same problem.
I'm beginning to think that I'm a bit harsh on Windows 8.1 LOL -
Ok, this makes me look daft but here are some of the problems I've got fixed last night. All simple problems with super easy solutions:
- Problem with the WMPC-HC has been sorted with k-lite's 10.2.2 fix though I still do need to change the audio codec to an older and more compatible one
- Explorer and .Net problem also sorted, apparently Custom Shell is the culprit
The clicking noise, I think, is most probably due to the fan. Tried a simple test last night:
1. Turned the unit on without AirCon - no noise
2. Turn the AC on - clicked once after the room starts to cool
3. Turn the AC off - took a bit long but it clicked again -
Just an update, I've handed my laptop over to Gigabyte support for it to get checked by a technician. Should get a response about the clicking sound in a few days.
I also called my reseller just then about the clicking sound too and he told me it's normal for a 7200 rpm hard drive to make a sound like that - said 7200 rpm would usually be slightly louder than 5400 rpm. So if my laptop returns with no problems detected, looks like it's supposedly a normal clicking sound?
Regarding the graphical glitch - I'm currently only getting it when I'm playing The Last Remnant (doesn't matter how much I fiddle with the configuration and settings) with my laptop plugged in. When my laptop is running on battery only, the glitches disappear. Contacted Nvidia about it sohopefully may get some answers about this...(I guess it's considered a minor issue since it only occurs with a single game...) -
Please keep us informed on how things go on your end. Curious to hear what Nvidia has to say.
Btw, can anyone confirm that 7,200 rpm harddrives make noise? I certainly didn't know that... -

Final update!
So turns out my laptop does not have any issues. The Gigabyte technician said the clicking sound is normal especially when the drive has been idling for a while....He also said the graphics glitch I was having with the game was probably due to incompatbility hence nothing they can do about it. Nvidia gave me advice at first but ended up suggesting I contact my laptop manufacturer about it too.
EDIT: Gonna take it back to Gigabyte, might be an LCD screen problem. Glitch happened with League of Legends too. Also occurred when I was using a benchmark program that the technician himself installed on my laptop.... -
Ok, I'm somewhat dissapointed with that. But thanks for the news mate!
-
it sounds like RAM on the gfx is faulty.
Like all ram, it happens some times. -
Hey guys.
I am contemplating on buying the P25W but as I was reading through the posts it seems that it has its issues that is discouraging me from getting one. I was wondering whether the issues such as the clicking, graphics card problems etc. are present in most of the units or just the odd ones?
I was also looking at the 15.6" Vortex IV as another option from pcspecialist.
Any suggestions that might help my decision whether to buy the P25W or suggestions for a different one with similar specs? -
not had any issues with mine. enjoying it.
I do get the odd click, but it's nothing to worry about -
Thanks. I was also looking at the Clevo P150SM but based on what I heard it has fan / heat issues thus I am still inclined to get the P25W.
I do want to make the right decision as I am not planning on getting another one for like 4 years.
Overall the P25W sounds good however I am just worried about the wifi connectivity. -
no issues with mine.
being a plastic chassis. reception is pretty good -
So...I managed to get my laptop replaced with a brand new one....but what are the chances that the new one has the same type of graphics glitch when playing games? Because it's still occurring. The only component that I did not replace was the power adapter (yes silly me, why didn't I just replace it anyway?). Could a faulty power adapter (which charges the laptop perfectly fine) cause graphical glitches in games? Because so far I haven't observed any of the glitches in-game when my laptop is running on battery.
-
You only read about the bad apples online...
So don't let those reports discourage you.
My P25W has been working pretty darn well for the past 2 months, no complaints besides that it does blue screen atleast 1-2 times a week. (Only when starting up a game, or shutting down)
I also want to confirm that this laptop does Infact make a click noise, it's faint and rare in my machine; the last time I've heard it was during finals so about a month ago.
However I do want to suggest that if your sole purpose is to game, please do not buy a laptop if you have to. A desktop will be much cheaper and will perform better. Gaming on laptops sucks hardcore and you pay a premium for it.
@sumiru
There could be a million different things that could of have caused that...
(When you plug in the power cable, the PC could be over volting the GPU, overclocking automatically...)
I doubt it's the charging cable, as if it was bad it would A. Not charge your PC B. Break your PC beyond repair. -
I'm hesitant to take my laptop back to the Gigabyte support centre because this graphical glitch occurs at an unpredictable frequency (i.e. game could run fine for 15-20 minutes and then finally glitch once; may glitch 1-3 times within a 3 minute time period). With my previous P25W, the Gigabyte technician told me he doesn't have the time to be staring at a computer screen all day just to identify the glitches. I'm not sure what they'll say when I bring this laptop to them with the exact same issue. Looks like there are a couple of P25W owners experiencing similar problems - really wish Gigabyte would address this problem. (One report pretty much identical to mine - glitch seems to happen the most when laptop is plugged in; he says the glitch happens on battery at a much lower frequency. I cannot confirm the glitch does not occur on battery for my laptop either since I haven't tested enough on battery.)
I am welcome to any advice/suggestions that may remedy this issue. (Just to clarify, the graphical glitch is usually a white horizontal line or bar that flickers; more uncommonly the screen flickers black for 1 second before returning to normal again.) -
-
I'm using a beta iPhone PC mouse app, and trying to play games that aren't compatible with windows 8; which are all causing my blue screens, -
Ive played about with mine to replicate video problem. If i power down the mains in, i get the same black screen for a second

Read the release note of the latest WHQL driver and this is in it:
Flickering Black Screen Occurs After Installing the NVIDIA Drivers on Windows 8 Issue
After installing the NVIDIA drivers on Windows 8, the subsequent reboot results in a black or flickering screen.
Root Cause
This occurs because Windows Update performed a background installation of a Release 304 driver, which requires a reboot to complete the installation. After installing the Release 313 driver and then rebooting the system, installation of both the Release 304 as well as the Release 313 is completed, resulting in conflicting driver binaries and the black/ flickering screen.
Workaround - Prevention
To avoid the issue, reboot the system before installing the Release 313 driver.
Alternately, you can check the driver status under the Device Manager and perform the reboot if the Device Manager indicates that a restart is needed. Then install the driver.
Workaround - Recovery
If you did not perform the necessary reboot prior to installing the driver and now encounter the black screen, do the following:
1 Reboot in Safe Mode.
2 Uninstall the driver.
3 Disconnect from the internet and then restart the system. 4 In normal mode, install the new driver.
Tried it and I haven't got a flicker last night playing a game. Will try tonight playing a new and more graphic heavy game and report back.hizzaah likes this. -
Right, the workaround given by Nvidia works! And I was right, it was Windows' problem!
No more black screen, white line and games seem to run better. I'm one happy P25W owner now. -
Wow that's great news!! I'm going to give it a try then - did you follow their instructions exactly?
-
-
All right, thanks. Before your reply, I uninstalled it via Device Manager once but didn't bother to check if it uninstalled properly. I basically followed those instructions step by step. Haven't had a chance to check if that worked or not. Will update when I do.
-
I've confirmed that it does work. Have tried Arkham City, Poker Night 2, Mass Effect 2 without glitches. Hope you get the same result mate!
-
From some initial testing, this seems to be working fairly well. Tested it on The Last Remnant, thought I saw a rare glitch or two but pretty minor - actually not even sure if I saw it since my eyes have become so sensitive to these glitches now. Going to be testing on LoL a bit more, probably stop trying to look for the glitch and play normally. Thanks a lot Yongkykun, glad your laptop's working fine. Fingers crossed mine will have the same results after extensive testing. Even if this method doesn't completely eliminate the glitches, reducing their frequency would help a lot for me.

Try furmark full screen @ 1080p that will show defects

Hi everyone,
Been using my P25w for a while. I first tried using a microphone recently and it was extremely quiet, and required so much boosting in the Windows sound settings that the static was unbearable. I troubleshooted all the drivers, settings, etc. and found no way to make it louder. The microphone was fine, I tried it in other devices and it was loud and clear as it should be. In the laptop, though, it sounded exactly like a microphone plugged into a LINE IN jack instead of a MIC IN jack. So two possibilities occured to me: 1) the P25w is built with a LINE IN instead of a MIC IN (unlikely) or 2) the BIOS needed to be updated. So I updated the BIOS using the SmartUpdate tool.
Big mistake.
The computer spent a lot of time POSTing and frequently would bluescreen and restart before reaching the login screen. I tried a variety of BIOS settings until I finally tried "Load Defaults" instead of "Load Windows 8 Defaults." Now it boots reliably, although a bit slower than before (20 seconds on the "Gigabyte" screen instead of <10).
The biggest problem, however, is that my second HDD has disappeared from Windows 8.1 It shows up in the BIOS, but not in Windows - except once. One time I booted and it showed up. I immediately ran some diagnostics on it and it passed just fine. Then I rebooted and it continued not showing up for every reboot (hard and soft) since. I've tried changing the SATA mode (didn't help), disabling the Secure Boot feature (didn't help), disabling USB legacy support (didn't help), and loading the BIOS's Windows 8 defaults as well as the "default" defaults (didn't help).
Why might a BIOS update cause a HDD to dissappear from Windows? I would love to go back to the old working BIOS but I don't know how to do that on this laptop. Thanks in advance for any help!
