I have a $3000AUD budget from uni to buy a laptop. The Aero 15 is 2899AUD and the 15x is 3199. So I can out of pocket 199AUD (+ like 30AUD for shipping) for a 15x. Is this the laptop that I should get? I don't game heaps but I do have a 144hz external and thinking of getting a 4k panel for editing. I want something that's pretty beefy and portable.
-
Just got the Aero 15X from HIDevolution. Clean install I paid for went slightly off. Can't find the Gigabyte Fusion and Smart Manager. Also the Gigabyte backup program won't run. Sent me the worst hand written Windows 10 product key. I can't even read that ****. These can be minor to someone but I certainly can't say I am happy with what I'm seeing. Spent about $700 extra for upgrades, I think I deserve better. Will report on Backlight bleeding after comparing it with other laptops. I paid $100 on minimal BLB option from HID.
-
Sorry to hear that Killa. Have you contacted HiDev? Please keep us updated on any developments.
-
Had some arguments about his communication skills over email which I had to put up with throughout the purchase + configuration process as he wasted a good amount of time of mine taking at least 5 to 10 minutes to make simple adjustments and answering questions on the chat.
I used chat to communicate because I read his comments in NBR forum somewhere saying Chat is the best way to contact after failing to get his answers through emails in 24 hr period. His response is "why the hell did you not CALL and use chat?" I mean...wow...I spent +$700 on upgrades alone and stayed real patient and nice until now. But guys...I'm thinking this is not a place to recommend buying $3000 worth of stuff.
Donald from HID is not like Ted by the way. My first consultation was with Ted so I chose Ted as my salesman even after Donald helped me getting $30 off, but that I believe was a major major mistake. Donald's response time was amazingly fast. His quality of email writing was genuine, rich, and detailed. Whereas Ted....is basically a slow unwilling salesman with frustration-inspiring stiff attitude.
Anyhow, I'm gonna write a letter to the HID's technicians or call them on monday. I'm sure those guys can help me out with the software issues. Wasting my time and effort over paid option..
Though I'm very disappointed at the ****tiest "un-readable" hand written Windows Product Key, Ted's communication skills, and Clean Install issues, I think they handled the laptop with care. Or I want to believe they did. I don't have the tools, experience, or skills to check out the inside job on the laptop. Many people on NBR forum says good things about the HID's build and that is my best source of judgment at the moment.
The laptop is quite an fingerprint magnet, but it came out fresh when I received it. The parts I upgraded are all there. All I have left to check is the pixel free status (~$35 option) and BLB condition ($100 option). I'm lacking experience on laptop examination, but will post my conclusion in the comment box sooner or later.Last edited: Oct 28, 2017 -
Okay. Just Checked my display.
HIDevolution minimum backlight bleeding option is bs.
Save you $100 for something else.
Don't do $15 clean install from them either.
I'd probably won't do $35 pixel warranty as well.
All bunch of bs imo. -

Its well built but got kinda dirty after one hour.
It gets hot after prolonged usage.
I played civ 6 for about 6 hours just now and all the sudden it got noticeably hotter near the end.
First few hours were better than okay. Very quiet and cool.
The precision driver for trackpad is a MUST.
Elan driver was very laggy and unresponsive.
To talk about the laptop's performance, I think I need to use it some more.
But compared to my old laptop, Macbook Air 2013...its obviously much faster.
Boot time isn't that great though.
Will add some more about the laptop later.Last edited: Oct 30, 2017 -
Would you consider getting a different laptop if you return? Or satisfied with the hardware / laptop as a whole?

I find it odd that this machine runs cooler under load than my regular Aero 15 XD.
I even had a LM repaste but that didn't fix any thermals on the GPU side. -
Wonder what they changed to accomplish that. How much better is the 15x on the games you play than the regular 15? I almost went with the 15 since I have a gaming desktop and won’t be connecting this to any external monitors really.... mainly decided on the 15x so I can play most everything on ultra settings (hopefully)

I have two Dell U2711's (2560x1440).
MiniDP to DP worked fine for the first one at native res (no surprise). HDMI to HDMI yielded a 1080p max resultion. Not sure why.
But in any case, I ordered this TB to Mini-DP adapter and it works perfectly. -
Is anyone using this laptop on destiny 2 or origins? If so is their GeForce experience working for them? I have origins set to high and it’s running at 60fps. GeForce experience says I don’t meet the minimum reccomended specs for the game and keeps trying to set the game to 768p and everything on lowest settings.

Ted the sales guy from HIDevolution says my pictures of Backlight Bleeding is exaggerated.

https://imgur.com/be8FAxo
$100 minimal BLB option completely wasted and I gotta be the one to be blamed for "exaggerates pictures"
Their Clean install option made Gigabyte Fusion, Smart Manager, and Smart Backup UNUSABLE.
I requested refund for those two options.
So frustrated. -

1. HID evolution make refund for those two failed options "Minimal Backlight Bleed" and "Clean Install"
2. and help me run those Gigabyte softwares
I think I'm going to stick with the laptop.
Restock fees and delivery fees might be charged on me and that is going to cause me a lot more $$ loss.
Will post a new "Beware of HIDevolution options" thread if they are not so cooperative. -
-
Further explanation, I took two pictures one was with the lights on and one with the lights off. Even with the lights off I did not see this glow, but it shows up on the camera, the camera is searching for any source of light to take a picture and it will brighten that light. yes there is a tiny glow behind the panel but thats how the panel works to show the pixels. from the lights on and off I dont see this yellow tint, especially when I am gaming. All I see is dead bodies that I kill in Destiny 2... lol

I don't think those guys who put the videos paid $100 extra to avoid BLB. But, I did. And got the same results.
The photo really doesn't have much exaggeration.
I saw the display myself and I don't think theres any exaggeration or camera picked up so much more BLB than my eyes can.
Sure, you can ignore BLB when not in black screen in dark situations. But, $100 for that? I feel like I'm scammed. -
Very immature way of making money from a money hungry laptop reseller imo. -

I emailed Ted that I'm posting about my issues and he called me for the first time within an hour. He said HIDevolution will make refund for both BLB and Clean install option.
I mean wow... that was the fastest reaction from HIDevolution throughout the entire buying process.

Killa do me a favor and do the BLB test again without the cam but this time move your head (not turn it) to the right and left and see if this so called back light bleed changes as you move. What I'm getting is a glow mostly due to (what I call) the glossy vs matte phenomena. If you look at the screen with your head centered to the screen you may see as I do the glow is greater on the sides and corners but moving your head to the right causes the right side to darken and the other portions of the screen get lighter. Wherever your head is to the relation of the screen causes the area to be darkest. Next lower your head to the spots or corners where you see edge bleed and let me know if they lessen or disappear as these areas do on my 15x. Hope you find as I have that there is no back light bleed but rather a by product of using matte screens. I really don't mind this much as it does not effect game play or my daily tasks at all. It will show up especially on camera though.

The BLB option from HID is that they select (or try, or maybe not even) to select the best ones, with less bleeds, of the ones they get in stock.....when a machine, as plagued with this particular issue as the Aero 15, perhaps this supposed selection on their part is negligible for the consumer who might be expecting a lot more for the $100 fee they charge. Perhaps with machines, that have this issue in general, they should not even offer this option to not have potentially unsatisfied customers, considering they are a "boutique" shop that depends on happy customers.

@buddy1065 Here are some pictures I took today.
https://imgur.com/NtX77TK
This is more like "how daytime display is like in BLB test (black full screen) setup". Bright light situation BLB test has nothing to do with real BLB test, but look just for reference. Not the best shot tho.
https://imgur.com/Kc2FD81
Zoomed in from far behind facing directly (center) to the display in slightly darker situation. The picture depicts the BLB well in this situation.
https://imgur.com/SECJzdB
From right side. I adjusted the display angle slightly facing upward because otherwise the picture will look completely white in the camera. It did look like the BLB is moving as I move to right, but in the end, after changing lights and angles, I found out that the BLB is still there same way it was when I took the BLB picture yesterday. From yesterday are https://imgur.com/be8FAxo and
https://imgur.com/RXyWBDn
https://imgur.com/AFf6iyT
From the left. The right upper BLB is invisible. But it shows up again when I move to the center and it look just like the second picture https://imgur.com/Kc2FD81 .
So, like @buddy1065 pointed out, the BLB on Aero15x display does change shape or look different according to the viewer's perspective. But, in the end, I think the best way to see the BLB is from the center. It comes and goes from left and right side of point of view but I think the center view depicts best BLB in action.
**ADD** The picture taken from right https://imgur.com/SECJzdB does not show BLB on upper left. The picture taken from left https://imgur.com/AFf6iyT does not show BLB on upper right. So that's one way to put how BLB is shown..Last edited: Oct 30, 2017 -

I would say insist on the refund for the BLB fee, perhaps even the clean install, not sure what happened there, which should be pretty straight forward implementation. They are an active vendor here....and a lot of their reputation and business comes from forum users here....so it is the least they can do to not have unsatisfied customers here posting their misgivings with their service.

RE: BLB services - they state in the description that the cherry pick is based off their current stock. This is a new machine and I'm assuming they do not yet have a lot of stock. Maybe the unit you got is just better than the others they had at the time? This is one of the reasons I'm waiting on making a purchase for now.

Just received a confirmation mail.
Their first response was "your picture is exaggerated" then they said they can't make refund because they actually did cherry pick the laptop. Then, after I said I'm posting my issues on this forum, they accepted my argument and made made refund today. The sales man with me is horrible in terms of communication but he actually called me for the first time after I said things about telling stories on the forum. I am glad they made refund, but...not sure if they would have done the same if I wasn't on the forum telling people about my experience.Paperless, LanceAvion, hmscott and 1 other person like this. -

For some reason this 2017 generation of some machines are getting horrible BLB, the Razer Blade 2017 is plagued with this issue, with some users returning over 4 or 5 times to get one decent, but still not free of the issue, just giving in to the "not as bad as the last one syndrome", yet some not willing to compromise on a expensive machine just gave up. The late 2016 model has very little issues in this particular regard, for whatever reason....my RB late 2016 came perfect in this regard on the first try, no BLB, but of course, in a picture or dark environment, the IPS glow is obvious, which is normal.....not sure what has happened in the manufacturing process in this generation for it to get so bad, not only on the aero but on many other models by other manufacturers.

I'm gonna make a warning thread sooner or later so people can make right choices.
There are good things about HIDevolution.
But, from my experience, there certainly are critical problems.
Especially when you are spending over $2000.
Mine was $2900 ish and...as you all may know it was not the most pleasant for sure.hmscott and Vistar Shook like this. -

So it is clear, at least with this model which is plagued with BLB issue, if ordering from HID, the only worthwile upgrade is the repaste, since they now offer many options (from kryonaut to conductonaut, fujipoly pads, among others)......have no idea though how well they repaste. Aslo to configure the way you like, SSD type, second SSD if wanted, Ram, etc. Clean install shoud be done by the user, helps to understand the system and what drivers, softwares are necessarily or helpful. BLB cherry picking, clean install are questionable, until proven otherwise. Extended warranty, if so desired, and also Global, is nice differential, but I have no idea in practice how honorable they are considering the price upfront, just to be able to see if it is an acceptable service down the road. Their reputation sure is from this forum users, and spoken highly of their customized EVOC lineup, but those are for the enthusaist high perfomance systems (unsatisfied with the BGA/Turdbook conundrum ) , where they are offered less and less options to pursue their interests and passion , which in this market obviously favors and is being dominated by the thin and light seeking customers.

I like the thermal pasting option from HIDevolution. But, I'm don't have skills to check on it. And, I believe no one should because it can ruin the repasting job. I saw several HID's repasting reviews and they were really good. In fact, I don't recall any that makes it a problem. So, I still trust them, but can't say 100%
Also, they handle the laptop with some kind of gloves for sure. Aero 15s will get fingerprints all over the laptop very quickly, but mine came out clean and fresh. So, I think they put efforts on hardware handling.
Clean install. Yeah. Do it yourself is the answer.
Heard good things about global warranty too.Last edited: Oct 30, 2017Vistar Shook likes this. -
I'm seeing conflicting information on the Aero 15X's screen. Some sites are saying it is a TN and others say it is IPS. People on this thread are talking about IPS glow.
Does anyone know for sure if it is IPS or TN? -

The repaste job is spot on. I have a GTX 1060 and i am consistently competing with gtx 1070-Q chips on notebookchecks sites. (12800 fire strike graphic score, 12400 posted here on the forum)
I am not a skilled overclocker. If i were for sure I could push this more. Since the temps allow for it.
All in all, i can recommend HID repaste wholeheartedly.Vistar Shook likes this. -
If anyone takes this apart, could you show us what the heatsink configuration is (i.e. where the thermal paste points are on the CPU/GPU and other places). Thanks

I want to get a 4k monitor and a 144hz monitor with this laptop. Will this be able to handle it?

I'm curious how much of the current scarcity is due to low initial shipments, or if it's just been incredibly popular. I haven't seen a sexier looking laptop that packs as much or more power as the 15X. Even the SSD it comes with is really good, if it just came with 32GB of RAM it'd be perfect.
-
Does anyone know how to keep the 15x on full performance when power cable is not connected?
Aero 15x slows down the laptop pretty significantly to make it last longer while charging cables are not connected.
Its good feature if I don't need much cpu performance outside, but its slowing down the computer while at home.
I disconnect the power to make batteries last longer when at home.
Edit*
Never mind.
I found the full power option on the control panel.Last edited: Nov 5, 2017 -
I just wish it came with a touch screen. The added glass would also add rigidity to the lid.
