.... note: the clockgen is now reading 1998. not sure why it sometimes jumps between around 900 to around 2000. perhaps this is the speed issue referred to elsewhere (although this has been while I've had the unit plugged in, not on battery)

So I must have missed a portion of the thread somewhere. The ATI card is not socketed? is it soldered to the mobo? Or is it integrated? The manufacture (not emac) states there is a 128 mb version available. If the socket is soldered in then its easy enough to replace. So which is it? integrated or soldered socket?
I want to buy mine tomorrow before Best Buy stops the rebates. I am also refering to the 6811.

    Thanks

Great description, I just bought a M6809 off of ebay, of course they did not have any of the restore disks and emachines wants 20 bucks for them. I am trying to build a library of the necessary hard to find drivers.

Just as a side note, I looked for hours today for the driver for the wireless adapter, I could not find it anywhere, finally found out it was a Broadcom, so told it to install a driver from Dell and it is working now, so if anybody is having the same problem with missing a driver, the one from Dell is compatible.

Does anybody know a place I can find reliable drivers for the M6809?

    Thanks

hey guys, i recently bought the M6809 and am having one problem. The s-video is not working. Mind you i have only tried using one s-video cable so that might be the problem but otherwise im stumped. I have been reading forums everywhere about this notebook and no one mentions the s-video or any problems. So if anyone has any ideas on this issue please reply or email me. Oh and one more thing, i would also like to know if the video card (ATI mobility radeon 9600 64mb) is upgradeable. I've read on many forums that you can add memory to the card and that the ATI processor can be upgraded as well. Is this true?

I think you need a software called Hydravision besides ATI driver
    see the link below

I have what I hope is a simple question, that someone can answer since emachines support does not support.

I don't want to do anything fancy with my M6805 at this time, just get it to take XP SP2 without freezing. The standard emachines answer is to do a system restore, which I have done. Also having issues running the latest AVG software, cannot run the Resident Shield.

How do I update my bios or whatever drivers to make my problems go away? If you have done the updates, please let me know if you have had success or had any problems since emachines refuses to recommomend anything.

    Regards,

    JK

Found some advice on BIOS to flash to resolve the SP2 issue on the M6805 at http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=51830&page=1&pp=15

Have not tried to flash a new BIOS yet... Emachines support is really sucking on this one. Too bad that I need to decide to take the risk on my own to solve the issues. If I do flash a new BIOS I will post my results.

Well, I have some trouble with the PowerNow feature on my laptop.

My laptop has the following configuration:
    ------------------------------------------
    *) AMD64 Athlon Mobile 3200+ processor
    *) 512 MB RAM
    *) Windows XP (SP2)
    *) ...

I have downloaded the latest processor driver from amd.com and installed it. It works fine (at least I think it does, because the system doesn't crashes).

After that I downloaded the AMD-PowerNow software mentioned at the very beginning of this thread. I installed it and it became installed.

But I do not have a "AMD PowerNow!" tab in my battery settings!!!!!
I can't find this feature anywhere on the laptop.
My laptop runs as long with the PowerNow feature installed - in battery modus - as it did before.

What can I do? I treid up to everything but it wont work!!
You are my last hope! Please help me.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Don't blame me if you lose!!

For those with the M6805, emachines has finally posted a BIOS update. Check the emachines support page. I loaded the BIOS and finally am up and running with SP2 and AVG Antivirus now works with the resident shield and email scanner (after SP2 install). FWIW, I did the Bigfix downloads for the windows updates prior to the Windows Auto Update of SP2.

    No problems now[8D]

just install ati omega display driver and your problem will end. I had the same problem with my M6805. Just type omega drivers in your browser find the link for ATI Radeon Mobility 9600/9700 under Omega drivers, install the drivers and your problem will go away, it worked for me I have no more freezing with XP SP2 since installing the omega driver. Good Luck -Moonman2347 [email protected]

    Moonman,
In a later post, I noted that emachines has and updated bios for the M6805 that took care of my problem. I will add that I still had a conflict with my AVG antivirus but found on the AVG site that it was caused by a conflict with Nero (that comes on the M6805). I installed the Nero update per the link provided by AVG and that problem went away too. I think I will leave well enough alone at this time since I don't have any problems. I did ask emachines to please post an update for the ATI graphics. I appreciate your reply and if I run into more problems later may give it a try.

Okay, so can you update the video card. This question was asked and apparently you can't. So I want to know is if you can replace the card with the same one. My video card went bad and my warrenty expired two weeks before it happened. So now I need to get a new one. Can a person do this there selves. Should I send it to emachines to get a new card. Can anyone send me any information about this at [email protected] or reply a post please. I can't use my computer at all and really need it back in action. Thanks a bunch :)

I have a fairly new (to me) m6809 and am looking to flash the bios to a newer version so i can install the SP2 upgrade. SP2 creates a few problems with my current BIOS. Will the 6805 bios upgrade work with a m6809? I don't need the newest BIOS, just a newer one than I currently have. Thanks!

    [/quote]

Yes the 6805 bios update works perfectly with the 6809. I am currently running the 6805 bios update on my 6809, bios version 0F08.P00 and it does fix some problems with SP2

You may want to check again. The new build has the wireless drivers to it. I put the new build on my M6805 3 days ago. And as I am writing this on my notebook wirelessly. The only thing not really in the 64bit new build or should I say the new revision is the graphic drivers.

I have a 6809 and also had trouble with SP2 upgrade causing freezing problems. I spent a lot of time reading info on the net found out that as an alternative to flashing the bios DEP can be disabled in XP and this will allow the 6809 to work with SP2 and original bios.

I upgraded to SP2 and had "freezing" problems also. When I closed the screen to save battery power the system would lockup and freeze. The only way to fix it was to hold the power button down to do a "hard shutdown". Not the best way to close Windows...

Try this. I fixed my problem and Windows no runs prefectly without any freezing or lockups.

Got to the root of your C: drive. Open the Boot.ini file in notepad. If you don't see it go to Tools> Folder Options> Clcik on the Views tab and enable "Show hidden files and folders"

The Boot.ini script (below) should look something like this.
Add or change the part in bold to correct the freezing problem.

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=AlwaysOFF

Yeah I have a real quick question about over clocking. I have the m6809 and I was wondering if overclocking is exactly "healthy" for the laptop. I mean since it has a much worse cooling system than a desktop would overclocking be essentially making it run faster and hotter than it is meant to. Would I risk frying my computer by overlcoking it? Thanks so much for the help. :)

Hi. Just found came across this post (and site actually).

Hi have an "evesham 645 A37" (same as the A647 http://www.evesham.com/PCs/Info.asp?e=7A2A9D0B-AFDA-4809-A610-63CDEBDCEC40 but but with a 15" screen)

I think mine is a rebadged arima w730 laptop (bios holds references to the w730)

Anyway, the point of my post...
    1) What abouts is the bios rom located. (Is it right next to where the rom drive sits, in the little brown socket)
    2) What is that IC number on the bios rom (need to know if i can reprogram it if anything goes wrong)
    3) Is the bios rom socketed or soldered on to the motherboard

Nice pics, and thanks for the good work.

    Cheers
    Paul

I have had a M6809 for the past year and have loved it. However, I have been reading reviews about the trouble with Windows Pro (and have experienced it myself). My question is whether anyone has tried to install the new release of Windows 64 on their system and if they have had problems with it, since it is based off of Windows Pro. I am interested in installing it on my own computer, so I would be greatful for any feedback that you guys can give me.

Okay, here's the next question. I have read about problems with upgrading to XP Pro. Since the upcoming Windows 64-bit is based on Pro, and I intend to upgrade to it, let me put this question forth.

If I get an external enclosure for my existing OEM hard drive, and put a new 7200rpm hard drive in, and install XP 64 onto the new hard drive, could I grab the drivers from the old hard drive in the USB enclosure? I have read that this is the main concern for those upgrading to XP Pro
    .

part of the problem with upgrading to a 64 bit os is that you need 64 bit drivers. until you have 64 bit drivers for everything in your machine, you may want to hold off. from what i understand, the only real advantage of the 64 bit os is the ability to address obscene amounts of ram (in the terabyte range), which you can't physically get for your laptop anyway. note that application support is backwards compatible to 32 bit (not sure about 16 bit apps) but drivers need to be 64 bit, so your win2k drivers wouldn't work

    Hi after a long absence.

The answer is...kind of. The system will be able to check the external drive for the drivers, but you may have to manually move them to your new HD internally. This becomes a hassle at best.

Also, due to the limiting nature of the bios, you probably will not be able to boot from the external system.

    Hope this helps.

I am going to upgrade RAM for my M6805. If I just replace the one RAM that is user accessible, then I am afraid that I will lose the DDR effect.

In desktops, I thought that you have to match the RAM to keep the DDR capability. In other words, I would have to replace both RAM boards to the same level (ie 1G + 1G) to keep DDR working.

Can I replace just the user accessible RAM (ie to 1G + internal RAM of 256G) and have 1.2 G of DDR capable RAM?

No such thing as DDR with an Athlon. Memory controller is on the main chip so you don't need that fancy two step thingy. You can add a gig to the user slot as long as it's compatibly timed. Search for posts on '6805 compatable memory. I'm pretty sure you'll find a bunch.

So here's a question for those of you that remain. As you see in my sig, I've got the 6805. The pictures on the first page no longer work, niether do the links they once belonged to, which is a shame really.

I do have a new C90S, but since then, I've been slowly repairing my first. I've picked up alot of new knowledge because of this website, Thanks.

    1. First off, how do I remove the keyboard for the 6805? I apparently am not searching correctly.

    2. With the plethora of knowledge I have about computers, this is a rather noobish question but, if I switch out the old 4200 rpm 60 GB HD with a new 7200 RPM 100 GB HD, would I have to reinstall the OS? I assume yes...

    3. If I don't have the back up information/CD's that came with the laptop over 3 years ago, would I have to buy a new OS?
EDIT: Finally got through most of the 6805 threads. So I just need to; basically anyway, save the entire hard drive to an external, install new drive, and then ...? what? I don't know.

    4. How do you open this thing up to clean out the guts? Seriously, I've been trying to figure this out and I'm just not smart enough, the laptop has defeated me.
EDIT: Apparently there are "two other screws" somewhere; supposedly located in near the hinges, but never specified where.

    EDIT:
    5. Upgrading the Processor. What socket type do we have and what is the Core designation name for the processor assigned to our chipset? Since we do have an AMD Athlon 64 processor, I would assume it would be simple to find a processor..... I was wrong. What I'm finding are a socket 939 and socket AM2. Of which Socket 939 is assigned the Core designations "Manchester" and "San Diego", and socket AM2 is assigned the Core designation "Orleans." I haven't been able to find any more information on what we have going on here.

That's all I have for now, Thanks guys.

Wow. x3badded, thanks alot. That helps significantly. I've seen on the hardforums that some people have gotten the AMD 4000 to work, one claims to have his 6805 running with one, but I think I'd rather play it safe.

Now I just need to get my hands on a new 3200 or 3400....

One more question though, I've seen online that there is a 250GB hard drive that is the same size and type as what goes in the 6805, suppose that works? Or does it only support up to 200 GB like I have seen alot of claims on other notebooks from the same years?

By that do you mean you haven't bought one over 100 gb yet or you have and it didn't read the correct volume?

Found the software reference on newegg. If you go down to the posted review made by a user called 'rl', they refer to a software called EZ-Drive, which has to be loaded in order for the computer to read the drive correctly. Though that user is using an old school Sony Viao.

    The exact statement below:
Not exactly sure by what he means by the multiple OS's statement.
