    @kirkus
I got mine with 9 cells. The weight difference as claimed by Dell would be around 250g. But personally, I regret getting a 9 cell battery as the laptop loses it symmetry and it is a bit difficult to fit in regular spaces!

Eversince my purchase I did not get enough time to go in for the real battery power test! But often I read the battery status when it said around 5-6 hours of battery life left.

With a large screen, high speed hdd (7200rpm), I think battery life as such wouldn't be that bad afterall!

I got mine with the 6 cell battery (you can find the weight listed on the web specs). I managed to squeeze about 7-8hrs normal light usage before I noticed the charge being very low. I could maybe pull off another 1-2hrs before the battery empties out. This was with most of the fancy Vista display settings on.

I guess your mileage may vary, depending on what you're doing on the notebook. Like I mentioned, it was only performing some non-demanding tasks like surfing forums. Since all I'm doing is loading a page, and reading, that's almost equivalent to leaving the notebook on idle. I'm sure that if the graphics card came into play more, the battery would have drained a whole lot quicker. Doesn't this remind you of how auto manufacturers rate their cars' mileages? It's a number you don't usually get in the real world.

Also, I'm not sure how much this contributes to power-saving, but I really hate excess fat, so I usually reformat and re-install only the essentials, get rid of all the extra useless programs, and make sure I'm only running the bare minimum required processes/services in the background. This notebook will mainly be used by my wife to surf the internet and msn with her friends etc, so I figure she doesn't need all the bells and whistles.

I've tweaked my 1535 as much as possible (UV, fresh reformat, etc.) and I only get 2hrs 40 with light web surfing. Seven to eight hours is amazing, borderline unbelievable.

    Hi guys,
Bad news for me. When I placed the order Dell announced 7 to 10 business days lead time to deliver. Elapsed 9 days already and today they told me "an engineering issue" occured and my laptop will only be shipped at the 12th day arriving maybe on the 14th day.
I'll spend another weekend waiting for it...

    Some update here.

A lot of people from the Australia/India are having problem where the laptop freezes from time to time. Rumor said that it is related to some BIOS/driver things with the ATi card that they are trying hard to fix. A lot of people have their orders being held back, probably due to that problem.

Anyway here is some additional info about the 4570.

i'm not too sure "a lot of people" is accurate. that said, however, i suspect Dell will address the issue before the notebook is available in Canada and the US.

    Depends on your view.

Imo you don't need 50% of the people to have such problem so that it is a problem. Let's say, 10% of the people are having the problem and its already a big problem.

It looks like the dell 1555 will come in Belgium (Europe) the 9th of april.
Dell is, at the moment, clearly giving away the dell 1537 parts at discount prices (ati 3450 at 50%, led 1440x900 already out of stock,...).

    Finally! :D

@garammasala: let us know asap if it is. Thanks.

I have personally talked to three sales person and I am in contact with one that is going to look into the Studio 1555 date. They currently do not offer this laptop but he did also see that parts and service/setup manuals where available to be checked out on there site.

I just ordered a Studio 1537 Special Edition, it kinda bum's me out that I have a 1537 on the way when there might be a 1555 coming to america. Does anyone know if I would be able to swap out the videocard on the 1537 and swap it out with a the new one offered in the 1555?

    Peace,

No unfortunately, you can't swap video cards. They are probably soldered to the motherboard. This means new graphic, new motherboard... quiet expensive. For that price your better of with a new notebook ;-)

    Hi fellows,
I finally received my 1555 (it took Dell 2.5 weeks).
Indeed it was due to some last minutes fixes and my 1555 got the new A05 BIOS (among other patches I believe).

    CPU: core 2 duo P8600 (2.4GHz/ 1066 FSB/ 3MB Cache)
    RAM: 2GB Dual-channel 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM
GPU: 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570
HDD: 320GB SATA 7200RPM Performance Hard Drive
    WIFI: 5300 (802.11a/g/n) Half Mini-card
red top, 15.6" 720p WLED (1366x768), 2 stereo speaker with subwoofer, built-in webcam and stereo mikes.
    - 3-year warranty (you never know :p)

    First review comments:
    - no problem at all the first day configuring Vista, installing some apps, configuring WLAN, doing some restoration points and backup... I'm happy everything ran well.
    - I shrinked the OS partition because it was taking 300GB. I created a new partition for my DATA.
    - It came with a 60d trial of McAfee security center 9.0. It's pretty fair, protecting well and not using a lot of resources.
    - I checked with Sysoft Sandra the HW and the perf are all very good.
Btw I do confirm they deliver now (Samsung) DDR2-800Mhz in China too. No longer the 666Mhz :)
    - I added all the patches on top of Vista SP1.
    - System is very stable: cold startup time around 20s, startup from standby around 12s. The 7200rpm drive is really great :)
    - The glossy 16/9 screen appeared to me smaller than my expectations; i was used to a 4/3 15,1". But it's confortable.
    - Size and weight are acceptable to me since I'm not moving too often.
    - I regret they changed 1 USB port into a SATA port. Prevents me from connecting additional power supply for my external drive (needing 2 USB ports next to each other)
    - Very silent machine. Can hardly hear the fan, cannot hear the HDD.
    - Very good heat dissipation

Conclusion: I'm a very happy customer (if I forget about the shipping delay).

I still have to run more applications to stress the machine, test the sound card with Audio processing SW and try mounting Videos, test the 60W battery...
Will let you know about these results too.
And will post some pics soon.

    Hi everyone,

I know there is already an extra thread for this, but nobody is writing anything there, so I might just try it again here:

Do you guys think there will be a Studio 1755 soon, too?

I would prefer a 17" and also a even better GPU than the one in the 1555
for the reasonable price the Studio Laptops are sold at.

So I know it's total spreculation and nobody could really know, but what do you think?

    Cheers,
    Alex

Hey, I wrote the actual measurement I made! Sorry for being honest.

I remind you that it's a fresh pre-installed Vista, without a lot of crappy SW you may install in the future slowing down your boot.
And using the 7,200rpm HDD surely shorten the boot time.

Umm... I was under the understanding that the eSata port doubled as a USB port as well? I think the manual says so. It has the 7 pin connection for the eSata and if I do recall a standard 4 pin connection for the usb in the same port.

    Peace,

Well, no time to check the manual yet  . I assumed the eSata port cannot be used for USB when I tried it. I just tried again; I managed to plug the USB connector in but I needed to use Force (note: I was more on the Dark side). I works ;) Thanks for the hint!

I discharged the battery until 10% in about 2H 30min - 3H. And I charged it for about 1H to get it back to 100%. Sorry, I didn't measure it precisely, it was just the first battery discharge-charge cycle.

When it's at 100%, not having many apps running on the PC, it gives 4H13 remaining, 99%; both figures constantly decreasing over the time.

Remark: it is advised at the beginning to proceed with a few full discharge-charge cycles in order to 'train' the battery and get the best out of it. And if you remain plugged in to AC for a long time, just remove the battery it will save its lifespan.

No, don't fully discharge your battery. Lithium-ion batteries don't like that.

I can confirm this. Lithium-ion batteries do not suffer from the memory effect. So fully charging and discharging is just a waiste of time here.

And remember Lithium-ion batteries don't like heat. The more heat, the more they wear of and the more their charge capacity shrinks.
    More specifically:
At a 100% charge level, a typical Li-ion laptop battery that is full most of the time at 25 °C or 77 °F will irreversibly lose approximately 20% capacity per year. Different storage temperatures produce different loss results: 6% loss at 0 °C (32 °F), 20% at 25 °C (77 °F), and 35% at 40 °C (104 °F). When stored at 40%–60% charge level, the capacity loss is reduced to 2%, 4%, 15% at 0, 25 and 40 degrees Celsius respectively.

Lithium-ion batteries may be irreversibly damaged if discharged below a certain voltage. To reduce these risks, li-ion batteries generally contain a small circuit that shuts down the battery when discharged below a certain threshold (typically 3 V) or charged above a certain limit (typically 4.2 V).
This circuit prevents deep discharge in normal use. However, when stored for long periods, the small current drawn by the protection circuitry may deeply drain the battery. Some applications attempt to recover deeply discharged cells by slow-charging them.

i asked a Dell Chat associate and i got a totally useless answer. the guy told me it's already released in the U.S., under the Dell Studio 15 Edge to Edge edition. I told him I was asking about the Studio 1555, not the Studio 1537, the ones out in India and Singapore.

I found another review on the internet. Well part of it. The website is down all the time :( But here are some pictures of the review (they are posted on flickr)

    http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=1555&w=32398343%40N00

Edit: The website ( www.blognone.com) is back online. But i can't find the review. Strange... Maybe the pics are already online, but not the review?
2nd edit: The pics have been uploaded on the 30th March. Probably the actual review will follow soon.

I live in the UK and it seems that the Studio 1555 will be released very soon now. Lots of the options have gone such as colours and many others have a lot of discounts. Also you can choose up to 8GB memory but no options for Vista 64-bit.

I'm considering this laptop as it seems to offer great value for money. But a few people who have posted reviews on Dell India mention a low build quality such as a lack of rubber around the screen which erodes the palmrest. Does anyone else have this problem?

that is peculiar. that said, however, even if you can install 8GB of RAM on a notebook running 64-bit Vista you still need to enable memory remapping at the BIOS level for the OS to see 4GB or more.

Hey gamezmaster, please dont believe all those bad reviews on this lap. Just look at the date of posting... It is evident that none of those bad reviewers owned one. Also check out user reviews at dell australia to see some real user reviews... http://reviews.dell.com/2341-en_au/1805/reviews.htm

Thanks for the link to the Australian reviews.
I share most of the pros/cons. So far, after 2 weeks, mine (supplied by Dell China) is still in very good shape and works fine.
The Hitachi 320GB 7,200rpm works great. Btw I had to split the huge 300GB partition.
However yesterday evening I suffered my first BSOD :( ; no time to look at the log yet, but it was very likely due to the wake up from standby mode when I opened the lid.

I also believe it would be better to make a fresh new install of Vista and get rid of the non-solicited SW like McAfee security in trial mode. Uninstalling those stuff doesn't make the computer completely clean (sigh!)
I installed the free Antivir 9 and KPF without problem. It uses much less RAM than McAfee SecurityCenter.

I didn't test the HDMI output yet (watch 720p HD on TV  ).

I got mine about a week back and have been playing around on NFS Pro Street and Burnout Paradise. The games are running good. Though I am facing a Vista glitch since yesterday, that says "Please Insert Disc in Drive --- " . I have spent around 4 hours and have been unable to solve this issue.
Apart from the issue mentioned above, I enjoy using the 1555 and plan to run Crysis ,Far Cry2 and NFS Undercover on the weekend.
BTW did anybody try installing Win XP 64 bit on their 1555. Did you face any driver issues or finding the drivers was easy. I am planning to do that , but I am held back as it needs a BIOS change too.
