Yeah it does seem like a screen lottery like my old xps m1530.

I am hoping the 1920 screen is better as the 1366 i looked at yesterday was poor. If |I had received a screen of that quality I would have returned it to them

Are there any owners here of the 1080p display? If so please post the id.

    I think you're right.

I'm hoping the same. There should not be too many choices with 1080p on 15.6".

How about a Windows 7 upgrade plan ?

"... the note also makes clear that any PC sold with Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate between June 26th and the Windows 7 launch day (October 22nd) will be eligible for a free upgrade to Win7. Better still, the individual OSes also qualify for the update, and starting on June 26th, Best Buy will begin "pre-selling" the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade ($49.99) and the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade ($99.99). Have a look at the full letter below, and if you've come here for advice, here's the best we've got: don't buy a PC at Best Buy until June 26th..."

It seems that the SEC5441 is the standard panel for orders after middle of may.

Our two 1555 will arrive in 2 weeks, ordered end of may.
So... if they come with the poor panel, we´ll send them back.

    Jarod,
In Europe we couldn't order the 1555 before the middle of May...
When did they use the AUO?

As far as I know some users from the german forum ordered before middle of may...
Mhmmm, okay... 13.5, so... you are right.
One of the other users ordered a week ago, he called Dell and they told him that the Samsung SECC is the standard now.

    Confusing.

The AUO-Owner has made some pictures.

    Damn!
I ordered exactly the 15/05... and I received a crappy SEC5441 for just a couple of day!!

Anyway, I don't trust in Dell's Sales Department.
    Everyone gives a different answer...

No problem... I'll buy another product!
    Toshiba?!

Ask 2 different people there and you´ll get 3 different answers. :D
I asked about our order and if they could tell me what panels they will use.
But... he couldn´t answer my question - so much for "the SEC is standard".

    Thanks for sharing.

Brightness looks very good. Colors and contrast look faded, but this might be because he cranked up the brightness to the max.

Yes please. Some close ups of black letters on white background, at normal brightness.

And I'd like to know the ID and maker of the panel too.

You really can't rely on pictures of displays to make an assessment of the quality. Depending on the exposure time of the camera, the white balance, etc. etc. it can sometimes make it look good, other times completely blown out...

You either have to look at and compare them yourself, or look out for some objective methodical tests done by a reliable site.

I always find it funny how people, from a picture online taken with a crappy camera, can come to the conclusion that a display is very dim, it has a bluish tone bla bla. How do you know it wasn't a short exposure time or crappy white balance on the camera?

Well I partly agree with you, and partly not. There are certain things that you can see on that picture (after clicking on it it's a 7MP picture). Like high brightness and faded colors.

Of course it would be better to see it in real life but that's not an option right now.

To the left the 1555 SEC5441 WLED 1366x768, to the right the 1535 SEC5442 WLED 1440x900:
Consider that the 1555 looks much better than what really is because of the exposure...Colors are flat and brightness is ridiculous.
And there is always a blue background...

    Probably the AUO.

The Samsung has been measured at 190 nits bright and 170:1 contrast.
That's not very bright and mediocre contrast. Also the viewing angles are not that good.

The AUO panel has not been measured yet, as far as I know. Going by the user reports and pictures it seems to be brighter and has better viewing angles.

    Try PC Wizard 2008.

If you can, make a close up shot of black letters on white background. Like when you post anew message on this forum. Please set the brightness to normal level (not too bright not too dark.)

    ...

no matter how high/low he sets the brightness, the camera would autoexpose (in manual he'd have to 'eyeball' it) to a level that particular cam manufacturer has designed it to expose to in those lighting conditions. Again, absolutely no use to make a judgement either on the brightness nor the contrast.

If there was a different laptop to compare to that would be different, but only on perception which is brighter, not the level of how much one is brighter, because the camera doesn't input light in a linear curve, which means contrast comparison wouldn't be accurate at all as well...

BTW, I'm just explaining this because I see this kind of trust in photos of displays as a ways of judging the quality of it all over the net. Nothing aimed directly to you.

But then again, some basic understanding of how cameras work wouldn't hurt. :p

FHD? as in FullHD? So you have a 1080p... it might be possible that all 1080p's are AUO...

As far as I know people have reported about the SEC one only in the 720p versions?

It is displayed as default monitor in that software too. Tried with SiSandra with the same result.

Has it got something to do with the fact that i am using Windows XP on my S1555?

Just got mine today. Fedex guy almost left after only like 15 seconds i hate fedex.

So after using it for like 5 minutes it's pretty nice. the midnight blue is too damn dark though. The screen is ok, nothing spectacular. ANy other resolution than 900p looks like total crap though.

Are you guys talking about the 900p screen? How can I tell which one I have?

Oh it's REEEALLY thick too but that's not that bad for a desktop replacement. It's funny how slender it is though if you look at it from the top.

Once at the desktop after startup it seems to take like a minute to load things like dell dock. Is there anything I can do to speed this up? What should I remove?

Yep, this is what I have said. Even if you are right in front of it - its still like you see color shifting / going a little dark at the sides. Not to mention of you move just a little ... but its true its like 4-5 years old screen. At least its matte (kudos to Lenovo for still providing mattes).

But in a matter of fact it's not about who the manufacturer is. There are good (expensive) and bad (cheap) screens. If Dell wants cheap screens Samsung (or AUO, CMO, CPT, LGP) will gladly give them cheap screens... for me it's more like Dell's fault here to provide these laptops with poor screens - 720p.

Btw, the RGB LED Full HD in XPS 1640 is Samsung SEC5448. But thats RGB LED compared to White LED.

I was thinking about getting 1537/1555, but maybe I will go for the XPS 16, ordered from USA. I will only wait if they upgrade the gpu from 3650 to 4xxx.

Can anyone tell me more about the heat problems user sachinsharma188 is experiencing? He says his touchpad is getting so hot he can't touch it.

Is this a common problem for Studio 1555?

I can only state the obvious: it's probably an LG/Philips panel.

I don't think any 1600*900 15.6" panels have been reviewed yet.

In Europe there is no 1600*900 panel available. Only 1366x768 and 1920x1080. What you are reading there is about the 1366x768 panel.

How does your panel look to you? How narrow is the vertical viewing angle?
Is it bright enough to be used outside with sunlight?

the point about the nx6110 display was to say that AUO have made an improvement in their quality.

My girlfriends Inspiron 1545 (build late April 09) has a SEC5441 display. Check the links below (images are in the original quality and not resized. The only light in the room is waht coems from the window behind, and its raining outside. Brightness is set to full.)

If you mean on the German forums: no, they don't have 900p panels. They compare 1366x768 panels: Samsung with AUO. AUO comes out better, they say.

I don't think it's because of XP. I've seen it happen other times too. I don't really know of a solution.

(I assume you already checked the device manager and that did not say anything either).

I can do a review if you guys tell me what to look for?

Also does anyone know what stuff I can remove so the thing starts up quicker, like the dell dock needs to come up quicker.

I find that on highest volume it's not very loud.. anything I can do about this?

Having read all 100 pages of this thread, what I can say is i'm glad I found it!

    First post here!

I ordered myself a Studio 1555 on Friday (6/6/09) with the following spec:

    Processor P8600 (2.40Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz)
    4096MB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048]
    Internal UK/Irish Qwerty Keyboard
512MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570
320GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
Genuine Windows Vista SP1™ Home Premium (64 BIT) - English
Fixed Internal Blu-ray Disc (DVD+/-RW + BD-ROM) Slot Drive including SW
    Intel WiFi Link 5100 (802.11 a/b/g/n 1X2) 1/2 MiniCard
    1Yr Limited Warranty - Collect & Return
Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module - European
Primary 6-cell 56 WHr Lithium Ion battery
2.0 Mega pixel Integrated Web Camera
Wireless Label (Intel Wireless Cards) - Core 2 Duo
15.6in Widescreen Full High Definition (1920x1080) WLED with TrueLife

This came out at around £864.

Now here is the reason that I'm glad I found this site and didn't think TL: DR! (check the post time! ;)):

    1. Replies in this thread have shown me how I may be able to get discounts as I'm still a student and potentially use the EPP scheme. Or is the general consensus that the discounts don't stack?

    2. I'm still debating the backlit keyboard I completely missed while building the system. But thinking about it, I'm not sure if it's a gimmick or not and therefore whether it's worth it?

    3. The issue surrounding the HD4570 256/512mb 32/64bit interests me a great deal. I don't want to have ordered 512 vRAM only to find out that 392 of it is sitting around collecting dust.

    4. Being a big fan of Halflife 2, the video review posted was very helpful in persuading me that the ATI video cards will be able to hack the kind of games I wish to enjoy on this system. This coming after my brother had a very bad experience with an ATI GPU on a Dell laptop recently. He recommended changing to an nVidia solution, which triggered me to do a bit of research as Dell don't offer an nVidia product on the S1555.

    5. I think i'll mostly be using this system to run World of Warcraft, so are there any members of this forum who have done just this on their S1555 who can provide any input? (There is a 1555 WoW review on youtube, but it's hardly what i'd call endgame raiding!)

Concerning the my first three points, i'll be ringing Dell tomorrow to try and apply further discounts, confirm that i'll get the HD4570 512MB 128bit version, see if I can extend the warranty and then whether they can give me the backlit keyboard.

Any input would be much apprieciated!
