just found that my laptop gpu temp rise faster than usual, resulting that my games fps will drop down constantly to let it back to stable temp
is it bcoz of dust inside fan or other issue?
anyone here tried open the back panel, mind to teach me? (i never do that on laptop)

The backlit keyboard is an option available when purchasing the Studio 15. It is not available on the Inspiron, but is standard on the Studio XPS 16

the backlit keyboard was not an option for me because I ordered thru the small business channel via my works discount and for some reason the backlit keyboard was not an option however you can call dell and purchase one from them for around 50 or 60 but not the 25$ it is when its an option....

I am very happy i upgraded to the backlit keyboard since I use my laptop in the dark alot and its made it very easy to use... 100% happy with this laptop and dell's support

Dell, as with any other company, is at the mercy of supply and demand. They sometimes have to remove certain options from being available to the public due to low stock levels.

However, the option for the backlit keyboard was there, and no doubt will be in the future.

I realy see the obvious genius thing with backlight yes. I have sent a mail to Dell Norway to hear if there is a backlight keyboard or not on the laptop.

So if I understand it right, the backlight keyboard cost around 50-60 $ ? (USD?)
That not so much, it is less what I have to pay for a new keyboard to my 6400, that would be 130 USD. or 740 NOK

apparently you cant get the 64 bit version of windows 7 for free like you could with vista. i asked dell and they wouldnt send it to me for free like they did before. they said that i could only have the version that originally came with my laptop and that id have to pay to get the 64 bit version.

Wow, thats a serious hardware problem. But then again, it could be your monitoring program acting funny. Does the computer turn off automatically? Are the fans going full-tilt? Is it unbearably hot to hold?

No easy way. AFAIK almost full notebook dissasembly is required which sucks big time. I could clean my Acer 5715 in less than 5mins.

One of these days I have to clean my 1555 too *sigh*

no, laptop not auto shutdown bcoz only gpu overheat....while others still in good temp
once exceed 100C, it will auto slow down clock speed & make games fps suddenly drop, which is a bit annoying

my gpu will exceed to 100C during gaming only, else 50+C...is it normal?
once exceed 100C, it will auto slow down to let its temp goes down

May just be joining the Studio 1555 crew, don't mind the lux rig in the sig. I'm looking for something cheap and simple, that has HDMI, and generally fits the bill for web use, music, and photo editing. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, and I'm a veteran of the laptop trade, so I'll probably upgrade the CPU, HDD, RAM, and Wireless on my own time. How 'bout a P9700, Intel 160GB G2 SSD, 4GB HyperX, and Intel 5300... I do not need the 4570. This is strictly for basic stuff, you catch my drift? Honestly, I need to shed the must-have-the-best stigma. I really don't need it.

Has anyone here ordered a designer lid? Can I see some pics? I'm just interested to see the fit an finish. The pic attached is what I think I'll get.

The sad thing is, this guy probably has better speakers than my sager  Reading the official NBR review, I'm sad to here there's flex in the lid and bottom chassis, is it really all that bad?

If you want specs, you'll probably be amused. I'm aiming for the basic Pentium Dual Core, 3GB 800mhz DDR2 (ick), 1366 x 768 LED (why does Dell call this 720p again? oh, right...), 250GB 5400 RPM. You know... stock.

$684. Should I finance? I dunno bro. The Sager will pay for it and then some, no doubt. But the Sager can't touch that hot, hot lid!

Ebay is the place to find them. http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-Core-2-Duo-P8600-2-4GHz-Mobile-Processor_W0QQitemZ170402600461QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCPUs?hash=item27acc9560d

But my question is, why do you need to upgrade? I ask because I will probably choose the same CPU as you. I'm wary of the 1MB cache, but honestly, why should I need any faster?

i just upgraded to windows 7 and i downloaded the 64 bit drivers that dell has on their site. the only one im having a problem with is the IDT HD audio driver. my sound doesnt work and every time i try to check where sound is routing to, it crashes. i cant even change the volume using the volume mixer or taskbar controls. it was working fine before i installed it but id really like to have the HD audio options.

I had exactly the same problem as you have, no sound and the volume control crashing.

Uninstall the IDT driver and reboot. Then delete the C:\dell\drivers folder, disable firewall and anti-virus and then download and install the latest version from Dell's site (I have A15). That's what I did and now it works without crashing.

OK, so I just placed an order for one with the following specs.

    Core 2 Duo T6600
ATI Radeon HD 4570 512 MB
    4 GB DDR2 RAM
    500 GB 7200 RPM Drive
    Intel 5300
    900p Screen
    Backlit Keyboard

    Total: $814 plus tax

It's not for me, but I have to admit this is really good value per dollar. I don't know if anything else does this well for under $1000.

By the way, just a couple of questions. Does anybody know what the make and model of the 900p panel is? And the hard drive, I presume it's the Seagate model? If so, I'm a bit worried about reliability. Anybody have any experience with it?

Anyhow, should be here by the end of this month. Generally, how much bloatware does Dell put on the Studios? I've seen some newer ones, and they seem to have improved. If it's a fair amount, I might start by reinstalling Windows 7...and I'll definitely try to optimize the performance as much as possible, starting with the GPU.

    Hello everyone,

i dont want to toil through the whole forum, but I just wasted a lot of time grubbing a lot of forums looking for a nice dell or lenovo notebook and I still have some questions, i hope that you can helpe me.

    My favorite configuration for the Dell Studio 1555 would be: T4300 + ATI 4570 512 MB + 500gb 5000 u/min + 4 GB + FULL HD Display + Backlight <<< for only 640 Euro until wednesday.

With a T6600 it would cost 100 Euros more, with a P8700 300 Euros more, with a Core i7 720qm 220 Euros more. The T6600 is only 5% faster and the P8700 only 20% faster than the T4300. So it would be better to take the T4300 Prosessor right? Or has is any disadvantage? I know that it does not have the VT-Support in order to run XP-Programs in Win7, but anyway I can make 2 different partitions, can't I? When I want to update my prozessor in 1 or 2 years, I can put a P8700 because of the same socket, but the Core i7 has a different architecture, right? By the way the 3dMarks say that the Core i7 is 50% faster than the T4300, but also needs 50% more power (50% less akku time). Maybe its better to get the Core i7 because in future Intel wont improve the T- and P-series any more?!

What I want to do with the new notebook is following (priority decresing): simulations (matlab, c++), fotoshop, office, musik, video, and sometimes games. I am a big hobby fotograph, so i whant to know if the colors of the Full Hd display are better / more realistic than the colors of the normal 768-display? Does every Studio 1555 realy have a subwoofer implemented? And also I need to know if is the keyboord suitable to type 6 hours non-stop?

What do you think about the long-range stability and life about Dell notebooks, especially the Studio 1555? What do you think about the Lenovo Thinkpad R400 (14.1" + T6670 + ATI 3470) in comparison? For students it is only 765 Euro and has a matt screen and 5h akku. Or what do you think about the Dell Vostro 1520 in comparison with the Studio 1555?

Well, I hope you can respond every of my questions. :) Greeting Björn

That sounds like a good deal for a good mid-range computer. The differences between the T4300 and the T6600 are minimal (1355 PCMarks vs. 1454) and in real life wouldn't make any REAL difference. What you're looking to do doesn't require a monster processor, my T6500 (1436 PCMarks) has never held me back.

Like you said, you can always upgrade it later. That is actually what my plan is, I ordered the "worst" processor with the plan to upgrade it down the road. If you look up Socket P processors you'll find that you have plenty of choices.

Yes the Core i7s are a totally different architecture so they aren't interchangeable. But with the industry moving to the I-series, that'll leave lots of the Socket Ps for the rest of us! =)

And yes running WinXP and Win7 is totally possible, its just a pain to switch back and forth. (requiring a reboot every time)

If you're going to be doing a lot of digital photography you'll definitely want the FullHD display. 768px just isn't enough room when working with High-res pictures. I don't know if the 1080's colours are any better than the 768's but they definitely wouldn't be worse, and you'll love the extra space.

    All 1555s have a "subwoofer".

I can't comment on the Lenovos vs. the Dells though, this is my first Dell and I've never used a Lenovo. I'm confident in my Dell's durability though.

Alright I hope this is helpful!

Thanks for your answers Terbo. I still have some questions.

Whats about the keybord of the Studio 1555? Can you type the whole day with the keybord without getting your fingers paralysed?

I want to play Dragen Age, but the minimal requirement is a Core 2 1,4 GHz. Does it mean that I can only play this game with a Core 2 Duo, and not with a normal Duo Core (2 GHz), maybe because of the lower Cache of the DuoCore? So do you think I can play this game with a T4300 prozessor?

What do you think of the "Packard Bell Easynote TJ65" in comparison? Look here ( http://www.notebookjournal.de/tests/review-test-packard-bell-easynote-tj65-cu-009ge-nkrt-1027) The components are alsmost the same and it is even a little bit cheaper than the Studio 1555, but whats with the quality of the Packard Bell? Or what do you think of a the "Sony Vaio VPCCW1S1E" in comparison ( http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B002RL882W/1000010859-21/?m=A3JWKAKR8XB7XF) ?

It didn't fix the issue for me, the 7a test pattern still kills it.

That's disappointing...I wonder what exactly that BIOS update did.

Took about 12 minutes in my case.
And then another 2 to snap out of it and start configuring the computer ;)

With the new A08 BIOS, our Studio 1555 is now able to make use of adaptive display feature of Windows 7. Great!

Which means the screen dims after few minutes of inactivity. It didn't happen in A07.

Can anybody please respond my questions??

Should I buy the Studio 1555 System with a T4300 or with a 100 Euro more expensive, but only 9% faster T6600? The minimum requirement of the Dragon Age game for example is a Core 2 (2MB Cache) with 1,4 GHz. Can I play this game without doubt with a normal Duo Core 2,0 GHz with only 1 MB Cache?

Whats about the keybord of the Studio 1555? Can you type the whole day with the keybord without getting my fingers paralysed?

    Greetings,

    Björn
