Good to hear, I'm Canadian too and i thought that only Americans would get it without shipping charges. They haven't sent me an e-mail about the free upgrade like they said they would though, I signed up right when i got my laptop. Did everyone else get the e-mail, or are most people still waiting for it?

Oh, and can you do a clean install with the upgrade disk, or is it strictly upgrade only?

Edit: Nevermind, the order form is up on their windows 7 upgrade website. Mine cost nothing as well :D

Is anyone still using Outlook 2003?

If so, do you notice that when you press CAPS LOCK, the icon provided by Quickset annoyingly steals focus from Outlook?
It's very annoying when I'm trying to type an e-mail because I keep having to click inside the Outlook window every time I need to type capitals!

Nothing comes up for me when I press caps lock, weird. The volume and brightness icons do come up though.

Weird, just noticed it also happens with the backlight keyboard popup as well.

The popup just seems to steal focus from the Outlook window, thats the only program which is being affected. Can someone tell me if they have the same problem in Outlook 2007?

If you're running windows 7 Download the 64-bit drivers for it,If you're using a 32-bit version of Windows 7 remove the old quickset extract the new one, open the folder where it extracted to,In my case: C:\dell\drivers\R226931 then open Quickset32.exe install it and it should run work..

    @gamezmaster

I don't use Outlook, but I do use OpenOffice. What I've noticed is that my volume controls don't work when Writer (or other OO program) is open. Brightness works, I can change songs and pause... but I just can't change my volume!

I'm also using the latest version of QuickSet, just checked it. If it doesn't affect your version of Outlook, it must be a glitch in the 2003 version (it is quite old now). I'll upgrade it when the 2010 beta comes out next month. Thanks for your help!

    Hey guys.

Does anyone know where I can get drivers for the 4570 for XP 64? I've tried the ones on Dell's driver website but they didn't work. I'm not a big gamer, it's just the the drivers stop the loud noise from the fan.

    Thanks.

These drivers will work once you use Mobility Modder on them.

Hey guys, hope all is well with your 1555s. Had a quick question.

Noticed on the Dell site that they have an updated graphics driver for the 4570 (sorry if this has been discussed in numerous other threads :( ). I'm using 8.553.2 that just came with this refurbished 1555. Should I update to 8.631.0? Or is there another place I can get them? I went to amd.com and tried searching for drivers there, but I couldn't find my card.

Again, I apologize if this has been discussed before. <---newbie ATI user and pretty much all around newbie laptop dude.

Yeah this question comes up multiple times a day.

The ones Dell provides will work fine but they aren't the newest drivers. The newest set (8.661) has to be modded with a program called Mobility Modder in order to work on the 1555. Google it if you need the latest drivers.

Hey, I'm buying this week. I hope it will be good choice for my budget and my college needs. I hope the screen is good cause I'm reading a lot. Also, I'm writing a lot. Please, post some encouragement for my buying :)
Also, somebody wrote about fan issue on dell studio 1555.
I need it to be quiet for studying in library.

Just watch out for Windows Update after you install the modded drivers. Under optional updates, there was an update for the ATI driver but when I installed it, it actually downgraded the driver and some parts of Catalyst Control Center stopped working.

So if Windows Update nags you to update your graphics driver afterwards, don't do it.

How much did that config come to? Sounds like a decent config if you're going to be using it mainly for your work. As for the fan on my system, it comes on occasionally during web browsing but it's only audible if you actually try to listen for it if you know what I mean. It won't disturb anyone in the library unless you decide to have a break and play some games. :)

While the 1366x768 screen choice will serve you just fine, the advantage of the 1080p screen is that you can have two documents side-by-side quite easily. It's what I do when I have to copy up notes from a lecture, I'd have a PowerPoint on one side and Word on the other (very easy in Win7).

Of course it depends on your needs and budget (the 1080p upgrade might not be available in all countries) but just thought I'd mention that if you're going to be reading/writing a lot, it's more useful when you don't have to keep switching between maximised windows.

Scratch the 512MB HD4570 (get the 256MB version) and use the money to get a better screen. The HD4570 isn't powerful enough to fully take advantage of that much V-RAM anyway - it will choke long before you actually reach the point that you'll be doing something that actually requires half a gig of V-RAM.

For work and light gaming. No, I wont play games i library :)

Nice, but 1080p screen is expensive and it think that you can't find in my country.

Well, I can't afford 1080p but what is your opinion generaly for configuration of dell studio 1555 I mentioned and for my purposes?

Well, I can't really pick up configuration for dell which I like.
You buy what is given to you or you can't buy at all.
So, config stays as it is.

Well in terms of your needs, it should be alright. It'll run Windows 7 with ease and there's enough memory for a good few programs to run simultaneously. It should be OK for you.

Just a little note for all those WoW (World of Warcraft) people out there. I purchased a refurb (roxorz!) from Dell outlet. Studio 1555, T6500 with an HD4570 (256mb). It plays WOTLK beautifully. I believe it's on medium. I often heal 25 man raids and this thing is great for being on the road. I know a lot of folks don't think WoW is demanding, but this is a good confirmation for those looking for a WoW laptop.

I've now had it a month and love my purchase. My 2nd refurb Dell, a scratch and dent and it looks like brand new. Just FYI.

Hey guys, just a heads up for those who have registered for the Win7 upgrade. On my account, it never showed anything about my order i.e. estimated ship date, status etc.

Then guess what just came through the post! I was expecting to wait a long time and all of a sudden I got my upgrade today! So anyone who is still waiting for the website to update, don't worry its all good! :)

How you are eligible? Dell has clearly said you are eligible for the version shipped with your system

32 bit = 32 bit From dell below

When I signed up I had no choice for 32 or 64 it was automatic 64 since my vista was 64

^i think he meant to ask if you could request the 64 bit disc after the fact like you could do with vista. my laptop shipped with vista 32 bit and i requested the 64 bit version from dell and got it for free. id assume it would be the same case with windows 7.

The date you see on the win7.dell.com website is an estimated SHIPPING date, that means your upgrade is still sitting in a warehouse somewhere waiting to get your name and address stamped on it.

I ordered mine on the 25th and my Estimated ship date was Nov 2, but it shipped yesterday =)

I finally got my windows 7 upgrade yesterday and I got 2, because as stated before, i had two different browsers open and running them at same time since site was being slow and they both gave me an different order number. Only one had a tracking number on the website hoowever I received 2 different packages on the same day..

I did the custom install from vista where it puts all of your vista files in a folder called windows.old becuase I wanted a clean install of windows 7. Everything is working great however I have been having trouble with the catalyst control center software not running.... like i download the file and then in vista it would say an error has occured during the catalyst install and on win7 it lets it install but then when I click on the CCC in the programs it gives me an error...

Also has anyone been able to get the quickset to work on windows 7? mine said it wasnt compatible when I tried to install it..

    Hi guys,
QUESTION: how do you 'hard' eject a disk (CD/DVD/BD) on the 1555?

I haven't found an eject button, and when there an issue reading the disk, I cannot eject it from the windows explorer (the contextual menu is freezing) and it takes ages before something happens. I hate this SW-based eject feature.
I'd appreciate any solution or workaround ;-) Thanks

Something sounds wrong there. My F12-based eject button has never failed...does this only happen with a particular disk, or any disk you put in?

Is anyone having a problem with the IDT audio driver in Windows 7 RTM (not RC)?

It was working fine for me in the RC and now when it's installed, the sound doesn't work. Worse, when I clicked the volume icon to check it, the volume meter froze! Going into sound properties from Control panel also freezes as well and have to end it in Task Manager.

Anyone else having this problem? I only use it to change the function of the audio jacks to connect it to my surround system occasionally.

Fortunately it only happens with disks that might be slightly scratched. There is a progress bar in at the top of windows explorer (path) like it's loading something but there are only a few big files (movies) in the disk and even after the progress bar reached the end, it's still frozen and won't eject.
    Occured with 3 disks only.

IDT Audio works fine for me, though I'm using the full Home Premium retail version. Perhaps a simple driver reinstallation would help.
I think that's just a function of Windows rather than the optical drive itself. It slows down and right-clicking takes forever when I plug in a corrupt flash drive or SD card as well.

A couple generic questions regarding installing Win 7 64 bit:

a.) are people installing the latest BIOS. I've heard that this disables some features, so I'm not sure about it.

b.) How about the GM45 Chipset driver?

i installled in the chipset driver but not the bios as i hear it disables virtual machines which is rather lame if its true.... i also get an error when i try to install quickset, as it says that it does not support my computer... even tho i got the driver from dell under win7 64 bit... i had graphics driver issues as well but got em fixed when i did the mobility modder driver upgrade....

how come there is no driver for the intel 5100 on the win7 site but there is one for vista?
