10.1 and 10.2 cannot be modified to work with mobile GPU, but... 10.2 will be in version for desktops and notebooks - so no more tweaking with instalation on notebook :)

Yeah I've been using Mobility Modder to add support. I'm back to using older 9.7 drivers at the moment. Any idea why ATI isn't supporting mobile gfx cards with the 10.1 and 10.2?

Guess I'll have to wait until the end of the month for the 10.3s! =(

    Hi,
I’m changing bios options properly and Fn keys working first as I want to. But after restart multimedia keys are first again. I’ve tried it many times – after restart multi keys are back again 8(
Is there any solution for such problem?
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=458789 - here's another description of this problem.

Also my laptop sometimes let out a short beep sound. And it’s not from speakers, it’s kinda system beep. May be something wrong with bios battery?
Thanks for any help in advance.

Thanks in advance for any help.

ok i'm a little confused, i just tried to install the 10.3 from the amd webpage http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx under "radeon video card drivers" and downloaded the "full catalyst suite" for windows 7 x64 and it basically "installed" like any other old unmodded driver (ie it went through the motions but ultimately did not install). What am i doing wrong here, this is supposed to be able to be installed unmodded right?

dlinfiniti, download the 2 packages from here - http://strags.com/ (dated 17/03), and install both in correct order.
In here, same result - the official 10.3 will install anything BUT the driver and CCC.

Assuming you are going to the AMD website.
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
from there you select your OS and pick Mobility Radeon on the next selections.
    Mine installed without a hitch.

I do not think so. The radeon drivers do not support mobility cards. You need to go to this link http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx and select the mobility radeon to get the right driver.

Anyone have any issues with the Full HD(1080p)WLED 1920x1080 display option for this laptop....

The contrast seems very poor. Blacks are more like grey... not really noticeable in windows but more so if you are watching a movie with a lot of dark scenes?

Ive tried to turn the backlight down but then the image is too dull.. are there any tweaks to improve the display quality of this screen or could I have some kind of fault?

I have this panel and not had any issues with contrast. Who is the maker of your panel - you should be able to see this under Device ID in properties for the display under Device Manager.

Sometimes when sound is playing on my laptop I can hear some light sound cracks (don't sure whether this is the right word). Usually they are less frequent, but sometimes they happen at an interval of a couple of minutes or less. It happens in Windows 7, Vista and Linux. The problem is definitely not in the speakers, because I can hear them with headphones and I can even record them with, for example, Audacity. Most probably it is something with the sound card or the drivers. Have you experienced this, too. If the problem is in the sound card does it mean the whole motherboard has to be replaced?

zdracko, i think i have the same problem as you, which wasnt apparant when i was using vista but since ive upgraded to win7 pro x64, every once in a while, around 3-4 minutes, the audio will skip a beat and continue playing.

There is a new BIOS and audio driver, however I'm having problems downloading the files from Dell's website.

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm just dumb. Peerblock blocks Dell for some reason, allowing them fixed the download.

Just installed a P8700 into my system which was an upgrade from the T6600. The cpu upgrade, new silver compound thermal paste on both the ATI gpu and cpu, and the undervolting have seen a large drop in system wide temps. CPU temps went from 45-55 C to 33-41 C. Under direct stress from the CPUStability program the CPU maxes at 57 & 62 C on b/t the cores. Nice and cool :D

PS: I just got this laptop a few weeks ago, and it has probably the best speaker set I've ever gotten on a mainstream laptop!

You installed a separate processor into the laptop? This intrigues me...Was there a guide you followed? Where did you buy a standalone mobile processor anyways?

Yeah I have a habit of upgrading laptop processors lol. I bought the P8700 on ebay for $125 which was a good deal. I would say on a level of difficulty this isn't the easiest laptop to dismantle. You pretty much have to pull apart 80% of the laptop to get to the cpu bc Dell's panel design only allows for easy removal of the RAM.

I followed the Dell studio 1555 manual on the Dell website. The CPUs possible are the those in the normal Penryn series for Socket P processors. Intel processors are not soldered on so provided you can get to it you can change it.

Good to know, thanks. Might just increase the laptops useful life after its warranty is out, if I can find a higher-end mobile Penryn processor on ebay at that time.

Well the new CPU has far higher raw processing ability. The P8700 is around 16% more powerful than the T6600, also the P8700 uses less power and support virtualization. That leads to increased battery life, and a cooler lap!

If you need the list of compatible CPUS let me know. ;)

Nah, the wikipedia page for Core 2 Duo's under Penryn and Socket P has all of them, thanks though. I hope I can get the 9000 series cheap off ebay at that time, fingers crossed :D

I wonder if it supports the Mobile Core 2 Quad? Thats also Socket P. Sucks more juice though, obviously.

Well maybe when it has outlived its usefulness as a laptop, I'll take the innards out, attach an aftermarket liquid cooler, and just run it as a 24/7 server. Then I'll DEFINITELY beat your temps :D :D :D

Hmm, I wonder if anyones ever done that.

More than likely some laptop junkie has done that just don't fall into that spectrum haha.

Also on the T9000 series you'll probably see a decrease in battery life because they have increase in power with no enhancements as far as power management like the P series. Thats why I went with the P instead of the T

I had an interesting glitch today. After installing a few windows updates, my audio stopped working and the Windows troubleshooters were no help. When I went into Device Manager it said that the drivers were disabled because they were not digitally-signed. Weird. I tried a reboot, reinstalling everything, system restore, manually updating drivers... nothing worked. The option to rollback drivers was greyed out. Finally I manually installed older drivers which, thankfully, I still had and everything is up and running again. Well, the OSD for volume isn't working... but I have sound!

    Hi guys,
How can I access the SAFE MODE during the boot?
I tried F8, tried Fn+F8 during startup but doesn't work.
I tried F12 but in the list of options there's no SAFE MODE.

I have a stock 1555 with Vista Home Premium.

    thanks for the solution

Since I was still unable to enter the Safe Mode with F8, I used a workaround:
In MSCONFIG, Boot tab, check the Safe Mode box and restart.
Do not forget to use again msconfig and remove the check mark before leaving the Safe Mode :)

I still dunno what is wrong with my F8!!

My F8 key works of for safe mode. Its maybe cause that i have in bios disabled multimedia key first, so the original F-keys are first.

Im currently trying to output to an old tv over s-video (using a vga to s-video converter) but can't seem to get anything but a poor resolution black and white image. CCC doesn't appear to have the any tv-out options so i'm at a loss atm, anyone else have any luck?

You can't do this, the VGA output is not compatible with PAL/NTSC TV signals. You will need a converter box to convert the signal to the required standard. All the cable you will let you do is physically connect the laptop to the tv. This cable is only of use if the video card in the laptop correctly supports tv out through VGA which I'm not sure if this model does or not.

Hello all again! I commented back somewhere on pages 3-5 about receiving an ACPI error Even ID 13: The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS. In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly.

I was just curious if anyone else is still receiving this error. Once again I'm running Windows 7 Professional on this now along with the Core 2 Duo 2.66Ghz T9550 CPU, ATI Mobility Radeon 4570, and 8GB of RAM. The laptop seems to run fine for the most part with very little issues, but I'm seeing people in the Studio 1557 thread that people should ask Dell for a new motherboard to resolve this issue just recently thus bringing this back up. I also have a client of mine (I have an IT business - desktop/server/OS/network support) that has the 1737 model that receives the same errors and again no issues. Anywho...just curious if anyone out there is still getting this and if it is something I should be worried about eventually or down the road. I have another 3-4 months left on my warranty, so if I decide to do something I'll probably need to do it soon. :) I've seen these errors in the past, but its been a few years on Acer and HP laptops and at the time they claimed it was a normal error that would affect the laptop much. However, I've never seen them on a Dell laptop until now. Some also claim this to be a video card driver issue, but again I do have the latest version of the ATI drivers. Just curious if anyone else had experience with this. Some people "think" we should worry and others not. I'm just after if anyone has reported this to Dell as did people from the Studio 1557 thread and had anything done or if they just told you basically what I've been doing all these years with seeing this message to not lose sleep. :) Thanks again!

just wondering what temps peoples studio 1555's run at?

mine seems quite high and im only internet browsing.

average 50'c gpu (goes up to high as 60 when hardly doing anything)

    40's for the cpu's.

    50-60's for the motherboard

I'm thinking about buying a studio 15 and I have 2 questions (that may have been answered in this thread, but I don't have the time to read all 60 pages of this and all pages of part one)

    1. What makes are there of the 1920*1080 screen?
    2. What hard drive make are dell using?

    Thanks.

Mine seems lower than yours, as the temperature is running at:
    45~50 for the GPU
    30~35 for the CPU
    40~45 for the Chipset
Ambient temperature at 28 here. :)

    hello everyone,

Sorry for interrupting but I was wondering if there is any person on this forum who needs a AZERTY keyboard for his Dell 1555 or 1557.
I've got one because I bought a new laptop online with a Azerty keyboard in it and I changed the keyboard for a Qwerty so can I make someone happy?

    back story

I received one of these dead about 1.5 years ago from a customer saying they spilt a 48oz drink on it. After my damage assessment it needed a motherboard, hdd, battery, RAM and screen. They decided to buy a new laptop so this thing sat at my house for about 8 months till I decided to try something.

I took the motherboard out and scrubbed the board with a soft nail brush and 99% isopropyl alcohol, front and back a few good times. There was corrosion on the screen connector and around where the battery terminals were, I'm guessing from the pop spill then leaving it plugged in. After this I put it all back together and it turned on for 1 second then off again...hmm

Pulled the board back out, stuck it in my oven for 10 minutes @ 450F (oven trick commonly used on dead video cards) - got it all back together - it came completely to life. I put some spare RAM I had sitting around in it as well as a HDD. The screen however has some liquid spots in it but it appears to be bearable. I turned it off and it wouldn't turn on again...sooo

PULLED IT BACK APART (i'm pro at this now), scrubbed the board twice as hard, baked once again - it hasn't stopped working since! I've used it most days, the battery is randomly retarded but that's not why I'm posting here.

It has that crappy Intel 4500MHD integrated GPU...I'm considering getting a replacement motherboard with the ATI GPU onboard, and the heatsink for it. From what I can tell those are the only two differences...board layout is the same, charger/battery is the same - think I should go for it? I've got nothing to lose :)

Seen as you're busy having fun tearing a 1555 apart again and again, maybe you can help me with something...

I'm about to change the thermal paste and the GPU thermal pad for some IC Diamond compound, and try undervolting, do I NEED to disassemble the entire notebook to be able to remove the heat sink, as Dell's service guide suggests?

    Documentation

It tells you to remove a couple of things first... then each of those tells you to remove a couple of things, and so on... it looks like you have to strip it down just to do this one thing :(

^Yep...it's annoying how they designed it but they had easy access to the RAM in mind, therefor touching the CPU/GPU suffers in terms of accessibility. It's really not that difficult, just be careful with your speakers, they are made of really thin plastics...I broke one of mine, glue saved it thankfully.
