Dell's bad reputation and decline in popularity have stemmed mainly from the capacitor fiasco ( http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/29/t...l=1&adxnnlx=1346331725-eVYE0KWN9KomkB/W/CU6Ag), and the use of defective Nvidia chips in a huge chunk of their laptops made between 2005 and 2010 ( Nvidia GPU Settlement Covers Apple, Dell, and HP). The former was partly Dell's fault, whereas the latter was 100% Nvidia's fault. Since 2010, most of Dell's computers have been pretty good, but Dell's image has remained seriously tarnished. And the fact that most of the Dell laptops people see at brick-and-mortar stores are low-end craptops doesn't help. I think in order for Dell to restore their reputation, they must stop their entire Inspiron line of laptops and focus on their Latitudes and Precisions, and perhaps make just a few high-quality consumer models. All their current desktops (including the Inspirons) are good though, so there's no need to drop any of them.

I have the Dell XPS M1330 with the Nvidia chip problem. I had to send it back several times for repair but once it was it has been working fine going on 4+ years.

I am quite happy with Dell products. I have had multiple desktops and laptops. Most of them lasting 5+ years without any problems. This is probably just a person to person case though. I have not had any problems with their customer service like so many others.

Yes, I have my E1705 and it's going strong.
Except in the mobility department which it never excelled in the first place! -
No, I've had to send it in a total of 3 times within the first year of buying it. The first being a few months after owning the laptop. I bought this laptop for school, not a lifestyle. I'm currently looking into seeing if it's possible to get a refund, it's still insured so my chances are fairly good.
