Wtf my order just went from In Production - Building to In Production - Kitting. Has this happened to anyone else before? I'm hoping its not because of the 9 cell battery shortages.

This sometimes happens when the production facility is training new workers. They'll select a laptop from the assembly line and take it apart, then reassemble it. Typically it can take up to 2 weeks for the training to be completed and because the inventory system is automated the status of the build may revert back and forth between the kitting and building stages. Generally if your laptop was selected as the training tool, then this could delay your shipment a couple of weeks. Nothing to be alarmed about though.

Thanks for the info. However, I don't think thats the case. Now my order has jumped from the kitting stage to the testing stage, so I'm guessing its moving along forward? Sorta weird for them to do that

Lol, with the recent chaos of the orders with 6 cell batteries, wouldn't surprise me either.

I Ordered my laptop in the UK on 21/06/2008, and it went into the pre-production stage on the same day and it is still in the pre-production stage 7 days on. Does anyone know approximately how long it takes them to start building the thing?

    Specs:
    Dell XPS m1530
    Intel core 2 duo 1.83GHz
    Nvidia 8400GS
    160GB 5400RPM hard drive
    2Gig ram
    6 cell battery

I rang them up, and they said and I quote "It's in the queue for production on the manufacturing floor at the moment sir, it should be delivered to you on or before the 7th July"

hmm..I guess i'll just have to be patient.

EDIT, Update: I recieved a reply to my email. The customer services employee was very apologetic, She said "The reason for your order being delayed is due to a supplier issue with parts. Dell is currently working with our suppliers and will strive to improve your delivery date." She also said "Your order is in production and has an estimated delivery date is on or before 07.07.08". It still says it is in "pre-production" on my online order status. They probably just haven't updated it.

    *sigh*

This is my first order with Dell, and I know it has been less than a week since my order has been placed, but my patience is being sorely tested. My colleague ordered an Inspiron 1525 a week before me, and his order was shipped to him in exactly 7 business days, whereas my order will take at least three weeks and then some. My customer rep tells me that he will "expedite" my order, so not to worry as I will receive my laptop by July.21/08. What exactly does he mean by that? I didn't think they reps have any control over the production stages at all. He did confirm that the delay for my laptop was because of the fire in North Korea which caused a delay in the production due to 9-cell battery shortage. Apparently, they have already recovered from that, so my shipping date really shouldn't be pushed back any further. :D

    *knocks on wood*

Found an oddity in the automated system:

If I put in my Dell Purchase ID, it says there are two orders and each is in pre-production.

If I put in the order numbers individually, it says that one is in boxing and one is in pre-production. The one in Boxing is the laptop itself and the other is some accessories like the wireless usb hub. Both orders had parts that were on the shortage list.

the same thing happened to me,too. I just checked my order from the automated system. If I put my 9 digit order number for each order and the dell 1720 is in boxing stage and the other (include bag and bluetooth remote)is still in pre-production for a few weeks already. But if I put my 13 digit Purchase ID Both of them are in pre-production. Well I don't know which one should I trust anymore.

Yeah! Well looks like Dell production and delivery service seems quite fast. I just bought a Dell XPS M1530 online on July 14, 2008 (Friday) and everything seemed fine then. I was thinking hey yeah it'll come on on around July 24,2008 (monday) next next week.

But noooo....even though I chose the 6 cell battery which was standard and listed as no delay on the website, I was told by the Dell sales rep that it would take 2 weeks. Even worse, was that looking at the estimated delivery date on the Dell Order Tracking system, it would be exactly 3 weeks later on August 7th. So either the Dell rep lied or it was going to still be 2 weeks or worse before I received it.

What made matters worse was that I would be leaving for university (I am in Hong Kong) in the United States ON August 7th, so naturally panic ensued. I frantically emailed the sales rep hoping to find just SOME way to hurry on the delivery. I was desperate to the point that I even requested that maybe she should just deliver the notebook and everything else and mail me the battery later.

Thankfully, she notified me after two days (13 emails) that the factory had managed to acquire parts ahead of schedule and that I could expect my laptop wednesday July 23rd or thursday July 24th, 2008. Well so now today is July 16th and I'm happily awaiting my Dell XPS M1530. Fingers crossed there aren't any workmanship problems/hardware defects/software problems when it does come.

Maybe the rep hates me after I've bombarded her email inbox with questions and requests. Oh well, I've been lucky enough with the order - guess I can only wait.

I ordered a 1720 on 7/8/08 and it reached the boxing stage yesterday evening. It's still in boxing stage today, but I understand it takes 3-4 days in this stage. So can I expect the laptop to arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week? Or does it take till 8/5 like the EDD says?

It all depends on what they are waiting on. I hope it doesn't take til 8/5.

Generally it takes about 3-5 days from boxing stages to your doorstep. That is my guess, barring any hiccups.

Thanks for replying. One thing: Doesn't boxing mean they are done waiting for parts and my laptop is already built? Or do you mean they are waiting for other laptops to box to go along with mine?

Boxing means yourlaptop is already built and they are putting it in a box along with manuals and stuff. It usually takes between 24-48 hours, max of three days. Your very close. My boxing stage took 2. You will have it in your hands soon enough! :)

From what I gather, most of the stages and EDD's mentioned in this thread relate to deliveries to USA. How does this translate to European deliveries? Are laptops ordered from European countries also shipped from Malaysia?

My order status page has a separate stage called "delivery prep" (which my orders been in for three days now). I'm guessing this is the same as the "boxing" stage that you have in the US.

Hoping to see the status changed to "dispatched" some time tomorrow.

I'm not sure about the rest of Scandinavia or Europe, but in Norway these are the stages that the order goes through:

    1. Order processing
    2. Pre-production
    3. In-production
    4. Delivery prep
    4. Dispatched

This is wonderful. My laptop is still in production and it is supposed to ship the 5th. From all the good reports I hear about Dell usually shipping early, it just happens that my run of the mill Studio will probably take a week extra if I'm lucky. I really do fear the boxing stage and how long I will be in it, if I ever do get in it. I know I shouldn't be complaining yet, but I am pessimistic about this situation I'm in.

I live in Malaysia. :D Wonder if that'll help my shipping date, since the factory is only some 390+ kilometres and 3 states away? Order date was 30/7/08...delays with the credit card. Gotta check if they've moved into the kitting phase and if Dad's gotten the invoice yet.

Don't worry about it. All that matters is the last few days that leads to your shipment date. That is when your system is most likely to get built, tested, etc.

My system went into the build stage right after i placed my order. It stayed like that for over 2 weeks. It went from build stage back to kitting, and now it's in the testing. If all goes we'll after, i will receive on time.

Ok, I was just hoping that maybe I would get it sooner than the ship date estimated when i ordered, but as that day nears, its seem more unlikely that I will get it early. Oh well.

Well as of this morning, its now in the boxing stage. Maybe there is hope afterall of getting it early!

So I ordered on 8/08but I had some issues that didn't get resolved fully until yesterday so when I checked yesterday it was in the Kitting stage. Today I checked to see if things were going smoothly and expected it to be in the build stage. To my surprise it's in the boxing stage (hopefully not an error)! This is a lot faster than my order I placed on 7/16 and I canceled on 8/8. It was still in the build stage at that point. Is EPP a whole lot faster than ordering through home or something?

Well anyway it happen, if its true than I'm happy. I start school in late August and the Shipping date is 9/4 so I hope I get it b4.

Edit: Wouldn't it be funny if I got the laptop I canceled? lol. The only difference between my oldorder and new order is the tv tuner, and warranty/lojack/accidental protection plans.

Chances are...he got extremely lucky and got a pre-built or canceled laptop. If I were you I wouldn't expect it before 1 or 2 delays. I am a pessimist, but Dell has been having a lot of set backs due to school season and just a lack of parts.

I ordered mine the 26th and I am on my 2nd delay.

Is there a trick to cancel my order that is already on the "boxing" stage?
It seems I can not cancel it anymore.

The customer service in India was saying that I am going to need to receive the package first and send them back within 21 days, then get a refund.

    anyone can chime in?

Dell's site says my laptop is in production, but when I call the hotline, it says pre-production. Which one is right?
