HI! i have the SSD one (i7, 16 gb ram, R7). It's a good note, good materials, it's lightwaeight, great displays, good keyboard.... but.. the wifi cad was really terrible. Dell support agreed to change it... i'm waiting that the note came back, hoping in a good result. The net performance 4/5 meters distant from router were terrible :(

I have received the laptop, 16gbram 256 ssd and 4k display. I really like it, until I install my first game.. Assassin's creed unity. When I going to play the screen turns so small and just in the middel on the screen, I can't see anything.. AMD catalyst hasn't scale option and I don'r know what can I do... Anyone knows about that issue? I need an urgent reply please.. Thanks you very much guys

Yea, I turned the brightness down to about 75%. That hotspot is related to the backlight. The screen is so bright I honestly don't notice it much by lowering it anyway. No more crazy-hot (just hot) spot and no more lockups.

I just did this. Pretty easy. You will need a credit card or other slim bit of plastic, the bottom has a bunch of clips around the edge (easy to get them open, don't sweat it). Also note for anyone doing this: The screws along the front edge are captive, they unscrew but they don't come out.
The drive is in a slim holder that runs around 3 edges. Put the drive in upside down (you should be able to see the SATA pins when you go to put it back in). 8 little screws to deal with to get the drive out of the laptop and out of the frame (on top of the 10! holding the bottom on).

They are confusing it with the new XPS 13. This is aluminum lid and keyboard tray/laptop body upper half, and plastic bottom. I agree with eldoret, it's like the old XPS line (reminds me of my L701X). Mine is already scuffing a bit but honestly I don't really care. The parts of the laptop I see everyday look amazing and it's VERY solid feeling because of the aluminum body top and screen back.

For what I saw in the videos above, lid cover is plastic and not aluminum.

That video of the kid reviewing it was terrible. He's dead wrong, it is not plastic. Also the play in the lid when it was closed is due to the rubber gasket that runs around the laptop, that is what makes contact with the rest of the laptop when closed. And dinging this laptop because of its performance when playing games is just idiotic. Of course it's terrible at 4K, it's not a gaming laptop. Might as well ding it for not being a supercomputer while he's at it. About the only thing he got right was the battery life being around 3 hours.

May be he's dead wrong, but for sure aluminum doesn't have that kind of elasticity that is shown in the last video ("lid is like a bouncing trampoline"). It shouldn't be too difficult to distinguish between plastic and aluminum, it should be enough the feel, if it's cold or warm.

I can buy the dell inspiron 15 7000 (2015) for 1050 euro's or the dell xps 15 (2014) for 1300 euro. Which one Should I choose?

It is very easy to tell. The lid is cold compared to the bottom panel (which is plastic). It also looks different from the bottom, isn't scuffing like the bottom plate (anodizing will do that), and is conductive (confirmed with multimeter, and now I have two nice pin-hole dents in the lid where I pushed through the anodizing, you're welcome). The reason it bends is because it's stamped from a sheet of aluminum, it's not milled from billet like the older XPS 13 and Macbooks. This means it's more flexible (think sheet metal like an HVAC vent).

Sorry for your pin-hole, but I never gave you this kind of suggestion! ;) Anyway I'm done, if it's cold it can not be plastic! :D

Exactly, plastic wouldn't be cold in touch, my laptop is.

Guys don't you have problems with wifi?

I haven't had any issues with it but I use my laptop mostly on the road and then I use my hotspot whenever possible so that's usually right next to the laptop. At home I haven't had any issues with it when I have used it there.

Do you mean DPI scaling? That's handled through Windows. Just go to Display in the control panel. If you mean downsampling, then no. It would probably catch fire if you tried to downsample from whatever is above 4K down to 4K anyway :)

I mean when I run a game the screen looks so small, I think my laptop doesn't recognize my amd gpu, cause my catalyst center haven't flat screen option just on the left.. Has anyone the same problem?

    Hi all,
can you please confirm that this laptop has some serious problems with WiFi (frequent disconnections, low bitrate, etc...)
In case it's a blocker point for me to buy it.

Searching on the web I've noticed that Inspiron laptops had always problems with WiFi (you can find a lot of threads on dell support). Is it possible that they haven't solved yet the problems???

    Thanks
    Ciao

My configuration has the Intel 3160 and I have had no issue with it what so ever. It's not the most high quality wifi card in the world so it is possible some people just got bad cards.

    4k models have different card- 2x2 7260
I've tried to replace my machine with the same configuration but got answer from DELL:
"I would like to inform you that, the system is compatible only with Intel 3160 wireless card and it could not be upgraded as there are no other cards available for the particular model of the system"

Honestly I haven't even tried to game on it yet except Minecraft (I run windowed anyway) and streaming from my desktop via Steam. I'll give it a try tonight and see if I can replicate it.

For any one interested, this laptop (intel 5500 gfx) runs GNU/Linux near perfectly. I've tested Ubuntu and Mint distros with kernels 3.13 and 3.16. Both work but 3.16 works a little better - screen brightness adjustments and keyboard light fades - more like it works under a Windows environment.
