Battery life is entirely dependent upon what you are doing.

Light stuff like browsing and 6-7 hours is possible, maybe a bit more with the brightness dialled down. Start doing some heavy downloading or video work & that halves.

Hi friends! I'm studying aerospace engineering and I need a laptop. I saw dell 7548 inspiron 15 7000 series, it comes with 1tb hdd 16gb ram, not the ssd model. I was wondering if it could meet my needs as as an engineer, I want a laptop for a long time. 4k screen goes me crazy. What do you think? And what about the ssd model, does it really worth it paying 100$ more and additional sum for an external hdd hard disc? And eventually, is there a great visual difference between 4k and fhd screen?
    Thanks you so much!!

I would say the $100 for the SSD is a bargain. Having a fast machine with a HDD acts as a bottleneck.

I use Google Docs for my business & almost all my stuff is cloud based, so a 256GB SSD is more than big enough.

The 4k screen is great, but only if your software supports it.

In my case I need big storage so I'm doubtful about what model I should choose.. I don't like external hhd. I'm worried about the graphic card and processor, does someone know if it could run autocad and softwares like that perfectly?

The battery can be replaced, you just have to open the bottom of the laptop to do it. So you won't be swapping it out during the day to get more runtime but if it starts to fail it shouldn't be a big deal to replace it. Also Dell includes a battery utility you can use to control the charging. It has a profile for always plugged in use that is supposed to extend the battery life.

Hi... I took delivery of one of these (7548) two days ago, and I've noticed some issues with the quality of fit between the bottom panel and the keyboard section, two inches to the left of the charging light looks like it isnt connected correctly

Ive been in touch with Dell, but my big question is.... is this unique?

Thankfully someone is uplodading videos for this laptop. Some gaming included (no frame rates though).

Thanks everybody here for sharing their impressions. Looks like a nice laptop, might buy it if nothing decent gets released in the upcoming months with a nvidia 950m.

I ordered mine (7548) last week so it should be getting here pretty soon. I'm super excited as this computer looks to be amazing. I'm going to be using mine for mainly programming (C), GNU/Linux adventures, and playing CS:GO.
I got the base model, i5-5200U, 6GB, 1080P IPS, etc... My main question is has anyone had any experience with running native GNU/Linux (Ubuntu 14.04/.10) on this beast? I know a VM will be working fine but idk if all the hardware works native (except the M270, I can live with HD5500 GFX on GNU/Linux). Also, will my pants be blow off by the gorgeousness of the 1080P IPS?

9Blu have you solved the problem with Dell? I received the laptop three days ago and I used it for 8 hours per day. It's beautiful and powerful but I also noticed the hot spot problem. After 5/6 hours the lower part of the screen gets very hot. By the way I don't see any related problem. No hard lock for me! Maybe it's because I have SSD model. I would know if those high temperatures are dangerous for hardware modules.

Apparently dell screwed it up on a deal saying the low end model had a dedicated GPU and shipped them without it.

In the comments section there are some interesting posts about the R7 m270, performance wise it seems to be really close to the integrated GPU (HD5500) which makes me wonder why Dell would even bother putting another 25w GPU in the laptop. They should have either sticked to the 750m or gone for the 850m or a 950m.

Sort of. I chatted several times with BestBuy about it. They can confirm which battery is in it. One of the represented mentioned the smaller one while the 2 others weren't able to give me more details than "8 hours" that's on the website...

Any ideas on how easy it would be to upgrade these new 7548 models to an SSD. I'd like to recommend this for my parents and stick an older Intel SSD inside.

I bought the model from Best Buy earlier today, ended up pulling off the bottom panel to double check the inards. I'm 99% sure that it has the 58WHr battery. I'll double check later.

BTW, it does have 12GB of RAM and the AMD chip for $100 less than the 8GB from Dell.

I know, that's why I am super interested in getting it from BB as I would need to only get 1 8GB RAM instead of 2; HOWEVER it would be great if you could double check the battery as proposed :)
Can you also check that the Wifi card is the Intel AC 7265 with 2 antennas connected to it as the BB represented told me? Thanks :) A picture of your machine opened would be awesome :)

Can do, but I'm going to wait until tomorrow as I've got an 850 Evo 512gb on the way overnight. Thought I remember 2 antennas.

Also, worth noting that the dell logo on the screen is warm, but not hot. Runs about 110 when not charging, 125 when charging, not sure it's worth worrying about.

After watching the video, a few things. Mine does have a little give when the lid is closed, but only a few mm. It does not nearly flex as much as his did, maybe this will change with use, but my other Dells have stayed pretty tight. Battery life has been better than expected, I used it for 3.5 hours yesterday and was down to 20%. I suspect the SSD will improve this too, as I can hear the disk whiring away a lot.

I think the driver immaturity is a real issue, but I've been through this before with Dell. My XPS 17 was the same way. Also the HDD sucks. Seriously sucks. The EVO should take care of this though. I don't think the trackpad is that bad, and I'm getting used to it. For me, I'm coming from the XPS with dedicated buttons, so I rest my thumb on the pad which engages the multi-touch functions, which is annoying, but I'm already getting better at not doing this.

As for usage, I'm a professional manager-type who needed this as a travel device, because carrying the XPS 17 was just not reasonable. I do some video editing and photoshop, but I'm not a creative professional. I needed a lighter device with decent power and liked the screen a lot. I don't need all day battery life.

    Thanks for sharing your pics.

Nice! 850 EVO 500gb is already in my cart, ready to checkout! I am just waiting to trigger the laptop acquisition.

Alright, I'll wait for your pics tomorrow to trigger mine.

I am coming form an old VAIO Z 2008 so I don't know what recent laptop really mean ;) as my VAIO is still fired up but I feel some pain given the HDD 5,200rpm and the old CPU. I dont think I'll need more battery than you but I rather have more than less.

For the trackpad, I plan to use a Dell combo MK714 (already bought), so I wont use it much, the only issue is, when I'll need to use the trackpad I'll feel it will annoy the hell out of me.

Take makes me go to the drivers point you are making: before my VAIO I had a DELL XPS 17. Same thing as for you, drivers immaturity got better over time as their engineers finally did a proper job. This Inspiron 15 7000 will sale therefore they will have many complains if this is not fixed.

Last question btw: you also feel that the laptop is fake aluminum plastic as per the last video? I did looked at it at a BB the other day, I couldn't tell if it was plastic or aluminum. They wrote "
Upscale design: You’ll love this sleek, sub-1" thin forged-aluminum laptop with diamond-cut beveled edges. The new Inspiron 15 is thinner and lighter than previous versions, with premium features built for performance."

Thing is my VAIO Z is all aluminum but someone could feel that it is plastic too... idk what to think.

It's definitely plastic, but it feels identical to the XPS plastic, which has held up really well for three years. I don't have any light leakage or anything like that reported with early buyers. I feel like it's a pretty solid design. The Youtube review from Dave Lee is kinda on the money in regards to stuff. I was prepped to pull the trigger on an XPS 15 or Precision M3800. But for a LOT less money, this is a great compromise.
Honestly, besides the HDD my only complaint is really Windows 8.1... And I hope to relieve that this weekend with W10 Preview.

Unbelievable that's it is plastic... !!!!!!!!

I just did a chat session with a Dell representative. It is saying that the Body is Aluminium while around the screen and keyboard it is carbon fiber !!!

    3:13:52 PM [IMG] Brounoh
so you are saying that around the keyboard and around the screen it is carbon fiber ?

Nah... He's maybe thinking of the Precision M3800 or the Latitude 7000. As I said though, it doesn't bother me. It's identical to the XPS plastic, which has been a workhorse for me, still in great shape after 3 years of use literally every day. For $1000 I don't think you can expect carbon fiber.

eldoret, as I have more questions for you for when you'll open yours again tomorrow, I thought I would list again what I think would be interesting to know before I go to BB to get mine :)

    - is the wireless card an Intel AC 7265?
    - does that card have 2 antennas connected to it?
    - what is the battery size indicated on yours? 56wHr?
    - what is the brand of the RAM? Could you take a pic of both 8 and 4, to have the full reference please? I am asking as it is 8+4; I might swap the 4 for another 8 but I would like to make sure I order the same to avoid conflicts (I have seen an article saying it is better to avoid to put 2 different brands together...)

    Thanks a bunch again!

If you want the 4K version, I would NOT get the SSD version, but the $1,099 version:
    - replace the 2x4GB by Crucial Balitrix 2x8GB for $177
    - replace the HDD by Samsung SSD 850 Evo 500Gb for $205

    = $1,481

Which is $32 more than the Dell SSD 256Gb version BUT
For that $32 extra, you get
    better RAM
    MUCH better SSD
    PLUS 256GB !!!
recycle the 1TB HDD as external storage

Best Buy's offer is also sweet in order to upgrade some components the same way I described it.

I'm very happy with it so far. I still don't have the 850 to drop in just yet. I think the Best Buy one is probably the best compromise. Most users can handle 12GB of ram no problem, but the HDD is definitely needs to go. It's an interesting compromise on a lot of things. It's not fully aluminum like a MacBook Pro, but it's not $2000+. The screen is gorgeous. Depends on your needs, but I'm happy with it.

I'm from Spain, here there is available a dell inspiron model with 16gb ram and 256gb ssd 1220$. I'm just worried about the processor and graphic card.. Is it worth it for 1220$?

    I'm also from Spain! :)
In Spain the competitors are the acer nitro series, the acer v5-573PG (which used to sport a 850m but has dissapeared) and then the Asus N550jk.
I think Dell laptops have now the best designs out there (not goofy looking and slim). If you don't mind graphics the inspiron is the best option, if you need more power, can spend 1500 euros and can wait until summer wait for the new XPS 15.

Also keep in mind that next month the new 950m and 960m will be released and there will be a bunch of new laptops out there.

I am Italian, I also bought the version with 16g of ram and screen 4k!
I only have two fears ?! I hope my partatile has the AMD Radeon graphics card,
I am also very disappointed by the plastic components! on the facebook of Italy, speaks of titanium and aluminum! what a shame.

If it has 4K it has the AMD card. The card is mainly to make sure the pixels can be pushed to the 4K screen. The HD 5500 on its own would struggle to do so - it is 4x the amount of pixels for the FHD that does not come with 4K

    7547 : FHD - i5/i7 - graphics by Intel HD 5500 only
    7548 : 4K - i7 - graphics by AMD dedicated card + Intel HD 5500

Btw I think we should have a dedicated thread for the 7548 that comes with the 4K as this thread is named 7547, which is quite a different model after all.

    What do you think?

what about 7548 : FHD - i7 ?Only intel HD or can be with AMD R7?

good idea, admin/mod could move to new thread all posts regarding 7548.

That does not exist. I think it has been a mix up in this thread, and that's why I am suggesting to split. Dell website is also mixed up about it...

    FHD is without the AMD R7 100% sure - that's the 7547
4K screen can't live without a dedicated graphic card, therefore MUST have the AMD - that's the 7548

I just got my Dell Inspiron FHD 5th Gen i7. In the checkout cart and the order email it claimed to be the 7548 model and also claimed to have the AMD card. But now I can only seem to find the intel 5500 card in it. Was this really a mistake on Dell's behalf? The main reason I got this model was because it claimed to have packed a dGPU for $800 on sale. It's a pretty big disappointment if they got that wrong...
Outside of that though it's a beautiful laptop. I'll be running some tests on it over the next couple days and if anyone has any specific questions I'll do my best to answer them!
