The only issue I am aware of with the screen is the thick anti-glare reducing brightness. It is not as bright as the XPS but it's not bad.
It is definitely better than the G7 with the LG panel.

Just did RealBench on the G7. I'm impressed. Score was 101,249. Then again at 111,685. The temps are very well managed as well, as good as the EVGA.

My inquiry was based on one of the few reviews out there where Notebookcheck mentioned the EVGA SC15 had uneven brightness distribution, "dissapointing response times" that lead to ghosting and that the excessive matte finish resulted in a grainy display. Glad to know you don't have these issues!

Has anyone tested the SD card reader speed? Is it as slow as in the previous generations?

I'm curious too! The previous one barely can read 25mb/sec. The more previous one, the Inspiron 7559 could do 60-70mb/sec.
And a 3dmark11 score with 1060maxQ and Core i5 would be awesome!

Search for the 7577 with a 7700hq and a MaxQ 1060. Basically the same as the 8300h and GPU.

    Hey guys,

My buddy picked up one of these G7s and has had problems with upgrading the ram past 8GB. Hes since ordered two 16GB kits and neither of them will boot with the second 8GB dimm installed. One kit was ordered off of Crucial's configurator and that didn't work either. Seems kinda funky, but apparently a lot of people with this machine on reddit are having the same issue. Both kits are single rank kits, any idea if single/dual rank could be an issue?

Is it really that much cheaper to get the 8GB configuration and add RAM? In Europe it's actually more expensive and I always wonder why people do this.

Here in the States it’s cheaper to buy the system with the memory you want as a separate RAM purchase is very expensive.

It’s been this way here for quite awhile actually.

There was a particularly good sale on the 8GB version with a 256GB SATA SSD for $930 before tax. It was something like $250 more for the 16GB version from BestBuy that was kind of a downgrade (more ram, but a 128GB SSD and a 1TB HDD instead for some reason)

In particular, my buddy figured it'd be easy enough to get ram and just drop a kit in and sell the old stuff. Oddly enough he called Dell tech support to figure out if THEY at least had the 16gb kit. Dell wanted something like $300 for a 16GB kit which is pretty absurd.

Ram for notebooks isn't really THAT bad, I paid about $120 for a 16GB kit of DDR3 for my old sager laptop in 2011. Ironically it's cheaper than its desktop counterparts last time I looked which may be easier to justify since the max speed for notebook ram is 2666 right now.

16gb of sodimm at 2400Mhz+ is right around $150 for 2 x 8gb. Laptops are finicky too with RAM so stepping up to Crucial (typically has the best compatibility) is $165. It definitely has come down some now that I've had a look at it however.

2666 2 x 8gb starts at $170. That's crazy lol. In my head that should be about $70.

    I bought this promo G7 with 8Gb (2 x 4Gb) and 256Mb SSD (m2 but not NVMe).
    Then I ordered 2 x 8Gb Crucial Ballistix Sport LT DDR4 2666 (PC4-21300) DR x8 SODIMM 260-Pin.
    But they didn't work in G7 =/
    Any clues?

I'd have to ask my buddy to see what "answer" he got from dell about ram compatibility. The best and most hopeful thing we can do is have some benevolent soul with the 16gb kit post pictures of his ram and the specs so we can source some ram.

Shouldn't be this difficult to source some bloody ram for an intel laptop especially since this six core processor is showing up in all the $1000+ gaming laptops now.

Download Hwinfo. Under displays it will tell you the model number for your display.

Is it worthwhile to try and grab a refurb 7577 with the i7 vs getting the newer model? I'm running the old 7559 right now, so... jumping to the 7577 would be a hefty bonus for my CPU and nearly triple what my GPU could do. I love my 7559 too... so whatever I buy has to be at least as good, if not better in every respect.

Just picked up one of these brand new at Best Buy $200 off.. $879 + tax. Best machine for the money in the world IMO for the 6 core i7 + 1060 MaxQ.. Really doubt you can find something better that would be new. Could be wrong though..

Is anyone else seeing very slow download speeds? I am getting download speeds less than 500Kbps, when my other laptops are getting much higher (I have a 100Mbps connection). I've already done the basic stuff like updating Windows and drivers (including Intel Wifi driver) and also removed the SmartByte software. I can't find any obvious reason for this. Any ideas?

In case it helps anyone else, I was finally able to fix this by deleting the Wifi adapter from device manager (uninstall device), restart, then re-run the Intel driver install, and restart again.

One of the first things I did out of the box was to run Windows Update, Dell Update (only a BIOS update available), and Intel Update. So I don't know if I had not updated the Intel wifi to begin with if I would have had a problem or not.

heIf anyone is interested, my G5 came with ta LP156WF6-SPM3, the software reported it as LGD053F as usual.

Blues and red are bad, the luminosity is quite terrible, but the one thing that kills the panel are the crushed blacks, anything below a certain degree of luminosity is turn to black with not shades of grey on between.

    http://www.panelook.com/LP156WF6-SPM3_LG Display_15.6_LCM_overview_33410.html

Oh, and the G5 in Europe comes with a fingerprint reader.

Did you apply one of the calibrated color profiles? I have the same screen and after I applied the profile the colors are noticeably better. I used this one from the 7577 notebookcheck review for the same panel.

I did, there's minor improvement with regards to colout balance and slightly less crushed blacks, but on a scale of 1-10, it's like going from 3 to 4.

So everyone, I replaced the panel with a AUO42ED (120hz IPS). Lost brightness control completely but it sure is a GORGEOUS screen with excellent color and brightness :/ Unsure what to do.. The loss of brightness control is a big deal for me as the new panel is excruciatingly bright

We would need someone like Prema to mod our BIOS to get brightness working I think.. This would have been the ultimate perfect machine if the 120hz + brightness worked.

Also, pinging @Prema for any ideas please??

I was going to but when I had my G7 completely torn down and ready, I found out I was out of CLU. So I repasted using Thermal Grizzy Kryonaut and honestly the stock paste was really well done even temps, etc. . I only gained about a -3c gain.. Liquid would likely be more worth it for maybe 4-5c more gain.. Hard to say though. I doubt i'm going to open this unit again, it took me about 2 hours and was a huge pain in my butt.

That being said, with an undervolt plus repaste.. Running Witcher3 at ultra everything CPU gets to like 68c, and GPU is at 62c. The G7 runs cool and very quiet. No throttling.

Heh, yeah I can see that. At least it helped some! The screen is good enough for me after calibration, but I am coming from a 7559 with its crappy TN panel so this one is a clear upgrade even if it is objectively not that great. :)

For anyone looking for a 120Hz panel that allows brightness controls, I've seen suggested the CMO/Innolux N156HHE-GA1.

I've seen posts of it successfully working in the 7577, and it should be fine for the 7588 too I'm hoping. I ordered today, so I will update with positive results hopefully!

No, I did not. I tried the EDP cable from the Asus on the Dell (do NOT do this) and it fried the video controller on the Dell. Lots of smoke/potential fire!!!

PSA: Do not use eDP cables not designed/intended for your laptop.. The power/ground wires are likely in different spots and will FRY/COOK your motherboard.

I exchanged the Dell for a MSI GS65 so I went in an entirely different direction.

If its anything like the XPS 15 9570 its the CL that is key. Try the standard Crucial Ram over the Ballistix and match the CL to what was installed.

I have the 7577 and its very sensitive to high CL RAM, so 7588 should be the same (the only exception is stock RAM, it would run with high CL). CL19 and it wouldnt boot. Try something CL18 or lower. U could buy 2666 CL16 HyperX kit. The fastest compatible kit now is HyperX 2933 CL17 kit

I sent back the lappy. The LG screen is a real POS! This is unacceptable in a 2018 laptop.

It did not help that I had a LPTS IPS screen next to it

Immediately after sleep. I was just testing it because my brother has the Inspiron 7567, and his can be waken up via the keyboard/touchpad, in addition to the power button. Can yours be waken up via keyboard/touchpad immediately after it goes to sleep?

Yes! Sorry for the delay, the first panel I received was damaged during shipping so I had to wait for a replacement that I received today. I have full brightness controls still and it’s a smooth 120hz. I will update this post later when I get home with some screenshots

    Edit: Screenshot [IMG]
Unfortunately I'm not sure how to test the color accuracy or scale, but it looks much more vibrant in my opinion. This link is to a review of the same panel since it's used in the MSI GE63VR 7E: https://www.kitguru.net/tech-news/ryan-redfield/msi-raider-ge63vr-7re-120hz-gaming-laptop-review/5/

I purchased from here and have very solid customer service: https://ebay.com/itm/NEW-N156HHE-GA...rentrq:f98654e51630aca470289584fff04afa|iid:1
